Who is a serious threat to the ‘fabric of society’ that affects all people?
The week of November 16, 2009, the US Catholic Bishops Conference met in Baltimore for their fall meeting. Once, again, after hearing their public statements regarding same sex unions, which were unsubstantiated that "These unions pose a serious threat to the ‘fabric of society’ that affects all people" I felt the same unbelievable horror from the terrorizing trauma that I experienced while doing qualitative research of recorded verbal accounts of survivors of the Holocaust, in particular a young teenage boy riding the train to Auschwitz. I experienced this same overwhelming feeling after hearing Benedict XVI’s 2008 Christmas address, I wrote...
“I think in truth on a much deeper level I was frightened, really frightened, to hear Pope Benedict XVI’s Christmas remarks against homosexuals and transgendered human beings and even more frightened by the silence from the larger global community of human beings. What is so frightening is, even if there is agreement that one person does not matter or is not important, in truth then no one matters.” (Read complete article - Auschwitz - Christmas 2008)
Sexual orientation must, first, be understood as the way that we humanly connect to others and to be one with another human being on the most fundamental level of what it means to be human. What is known about sexual orientation is that it is set very early in life either just before birth or very soon after. In addition, once it is set it is resistant to change remaining constant throughout a person’s life. A child has absolutely no understanding of the meaning of sexual orientation. A very young child only wants to attach to a loving adult, parent, caretaker, etc. to feel secure and loved. (Read more - Sexual orientation is less about sex and more about love)
What I describe below is a quick general overview of early childhood psychological development growing up gay. It should not be taken as the final word or complete description on the subject that would greatly minimize the complexity and importance of sexual orientation development, the overabundant amount of research done (from around the world), to be done and would be harmful to many people. I always strongly suggest further reading and study on sexual orientation, human sexuality from a variety resource links posted in the left hand column of this blog. Continuous education on sexual orientation and human sexuality is key to making this a safer and more productive world for everyone. Below I am combining the works of a variety of researchers and professionals, to list a few, Jack Drescher, Sidney Phillips, Selma Fraiberg, John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth, Richard Isay, Henry Krystal, Harry Stack Sullivan, Ralph E. Roughton, and many great professors and colleagues. In addition, included is my work experience, as a “gay Catholic priest” who came out publicly to my parish, and as a clinical psychologist working with variety of diverse groups of people and individuals, including volunteering my services at a number of LGBT groups and organizations.
A male child with a homosexual orientation
Raised in a Family where
Homosexuality is feared or considered sinful or evil
What happens with a male child with a homosexual orientation is that this child will want to bond to an adult male, the father and or an older same-sex sibling. In a family where homosexuality is feared or considered sinful or evil, this male child’s innocent and most basic human need for love and affection are likely going to be discouraged or rejected in varying degrees of intensity. This happens at a very young age when a child has no understanding why he is being mistreated so cruelly for what comes to him naturally as the basic human need for love and wanting to show his love for his dad and feel one with him. Even the slightest sign of disapproval at these most critical times can be overwhelming even traumatizing for this male child.
A female child with a heterosexual orientation at the same age showing exactly the same signs of affection will be met with approval and they will likely be reciprocated. This female child will then be filled with a child’s delight and joy of being humanly corrected to another and will glow for hours. The exact opposite experience of feelings will come over the male child with a homosexual orientation. This most dreaded experience of feeling separate, bad and not loved is continuous overwhelming and seems to this child that it will never end. So, the child will try to push it out of his consciousness as much as possible, remaining filled with extreme confusion and fear feeling alone and that no one cares. If a female child is rejected by the father and the child starts crying someone is likely to come sooth the child, even the father will likely say he is sorry and hug and kiss the child helping to restore a sense of human connectedness. This tends not to be the case for the male child with homosexual orientation.
After, a number of failed attempts at this most basic human need for love to feel connected to another, the male child is likely to stop any further attempts in order to stop the overwhelming feeling of being rejected and feeling very alone. The child will likely learn to suppress all natural feelings he has for human connectedness and the joy and wonderment of being one with another that is filled with all that is good and true and loving. It destroys this child’s future hopes of ever being one with another. In fact what are the most pleasant feelings experienced when the basic human need for love and bonding with another human being are met are likely to be switched and be perceived as feelings that are unbearably unpleasant an experience to be avoided at all cost. “Love is ALWAYS a threat – Hate is NEVER a threat.” This being detached and avoiding these pleasant feelings of human bonding with another may likely be applied to many others areas of the person’s life that generally are considered pleasurable and enjoyable.
This is not the psychological developmental outcome for homosexual children raised in families where sexual orientation is understood and valued. These children grow up to live normal productive lives able to bond comfortably with others and forming significant long lasting relationships.
“Love is ALWAYS a threat – Hate is NEVER a threat.”
People, who are antigay, consider homosexuality as evil generally have similar reactions when attempting to express their thoughts verbally. They tend to have a strong reaction of disgust and unwillingness or inability to put into words their feelings or thoughts about homosexual orientation. What is put into words is generally belief, negative and vague. There is no clear, well-defined or logical explanation given for their strong dislike of homosexual orientation. They tend to have little, if any factual knowledge about homosexuality. Discussion tends to be limited a statement that the bible condemns homosexuality. Any factual documentation from biblical scholars offered that disagree that their statement that bible is against homosexuality are simply dismissed by them as irrelevant. For some there can be fierce reactions of anger to end the discussion or stop it from ever beginning. However, never will there be any facts to back up their reasoning for considering that homosexuality is wrong or evil.
There tends to be for some a hysterical quality to their reactions. I liken this, at times, to be similar to a child throwing a tantrum when hurt accidently or unfairly and is physically and verbally attacking you, the adult. And as the adult, you can feel the child’s painful frustration and inability to soothe himself and needs the assistance of a knowledgeable and understanding adult to help.
Others, when they are describing homosexual people it is in terms that they “all” act in the same way and they “all” do the same things. There is no individualization or separation in their descriptions of homosexuals from the group and seen as individuals. Instead they are perceived as “all” the same, without knowing it they have dehumanized homosexual people, meaning they have reduced them “all” to being less than human. Among those who dehumanize homosexual people by their antigay statements, there can be this general kind of meanness “to be as mean as you can be” to another human being without any qualm of conscience of regret for having harmed another follow human being. Again, it seems to resemble a child having a tantrum, as describe above. However, they are adults, they can cause serious harm and in extreme cases they can leave a homosexual person to die. They seem to have a “cold indifference," untouched by the pain they cause homosexual people. Seemly, quite oblivious to the serious life threatening harm they are causing to homosexual people in general, especially very young children. Without the experience of “human connectedness” feeling one with another, there is no empathy, the ability to identify with the pain that another human being is experiencing. How do some people get this way? I think of Selma Fraiberg's research "Ghost in the Nursery." Where in their lives did someone ignore their pain and suffering, treating them so inhumanly that they are unaware that they are doing the same and worst to others, in some cases to millions of other people, including children?
The Continuum of Sexual Orientation
To begin with it must be understood as fact the when speaking about sexual orientation we are speaking about the entire human population. Sexual orientation is not confined to one particular race, or nationality or country or a time in history. Sexual orientation is a major component of the human race, as sound as, the earth revolving around the sun and just as specula, a breathtaking wonderment. “It is a gift from God!!!” as a Trappist Abbot said to me, who was the very first person I told was “gay,” when I was in my late 30’s.
From documented research it is understood that sexual orientation is on a continuum. It is explained that people at the opposite ends of the continuum 10% are exclusively heterosexual, 10% are homosexual and 80% of the people in the middle are varying degrees of both heterosexual and homosexual orientations. (Kinsey Chart)
This means that 90% of the general population has at least in part a homosexual orientation. Often this critical piece data is forgotten between the people who argue that homosexual orientation is a choice and those who insist that it is not a choice. Because according to the research data it is both depending where a particular individual lines up on the sexual orientation continuum.
Having both Homosexual and Heterosexual Orientations
For the 80% of people in the middle of the continuum, they have a choice to a degree, because they have a mixture of both the heterosexual and homosexual orientations. Important note that this mixture of having both sexual orientations remains unchanged throughout their lives, meaning that no matter which sexual orientation each person may choose does not eliminate or wipe out the sexual orientation not chosen. Having both sexual orientations is a mixture that varies in different degrees of how much an individual person has of each, heterosexual and homosexual orientations. Of the people in the middle of sexual continuum the mixture varies for each person in this 80% range. Not understanding this important fact can be considerably disturbing and disorienting for some, especially if they have been greatly influenced by unsubstantiated antigay teachings of some religious organizations or similar social norms.
As my Trappist Abbott friend told me immediately after I told him I was gay, "Who told you that you were bad!?! It is a gift from God!!!" The Trappist Abbott told me that I had to go out and learn more about who I was and begin appreciating the great gift that God has given me. The same is true for some of these people, who may be stressed about their natural attraction for both men and women. They need to be reassured that they are not alone and that they are most definitely an important part of the human race. And as there are not any two people who look exactly like, the same seems to be true about a person's sexual orientation mixture. What does remain constant among all human beings is LOVE. Love never changes, no matter who you are or who you love. All the qualities and principals of love, remain exactly the same. However, love is more fully experienced, loving and being loved, when we are able to understand, appreciate and value fully who we are, as an individual human being.
Exclusively Homosexual or Exclusively Heterosexual
However, the 10% of the people who are at the one end of the continuum that is exclusively homosexual orientation they have no choice, as is the same for the 10% of the people at the other end of the continuum, who are exclusively heterosexual.
Please, understand that there is an overabundance of research data and studies regarding sexual orientation, human sexuality and gender identity that continues to be forthcoming and that is fascinating to read and to learn, and what is presented here hardly touches the wealth of information that exists. Spending time reading, taking a class or attending lectures, workshop, etc. regarding human sexuality will help explain the wonder and complexites of being human and being alive. I liken studying human sexuality or human behavior to looking up at the stars on a clear night, far away from city lights. When you first look up at the stars you only see just a few stars. However, the longer you keep looking, the more stars you begin to see, until the entire sky is filled up with stars. Fancinating! Studying and always learning, always growing is enormously better than always fearing who we are and hating ourselves and others because of our ignorance. Do not allow yourself to be short changed on your life by following other people's ignorance, their unwillingness out of fear to search for truth. If they cannot answer all your endless questions calmly, intelligently and respectfully, they have stopped looking at the stars or sadder they don't even know they exists.
Coming out Publicly as a “Gay Catholic Priest”
Having come out publicly, as a gay priest, I have been privileged to meet with very large groups of people who have expressed their feelings to me, both publicly and privately. In general, people are shocked, confused, some angry and upset, until I begin speaking about how sexual orientation is set very early in life and begin to describe how very young children are seriously harmed emotionally by antigay reactions to their most basic human need for love and affection. Almost, instantly the crowd becomes calm and quiet and they begin to listen intently. As I explain more facts about sexual orientation, they ask more questions out of concern for their children. The more I explain, answer their questions and provide plenty of resources of documentation, the calmer and more relaxed the crowd as a whole becomes.
The True Heterosexual
What has always caught my attention is that a few people would come up to me away from the crowd and express their confusion and frustration not about me or my being gay, but about not being able to understand or identify with the crowds reaction to my being “gay.” These people are not gay. They are not filled with any self-hatred. anger or guilt. I can best explain it as they feel somehow “left out” and alone, not being in on the general commotion of the crowds’ reactions about “homosexuality.” They are not being patronizing. What they seem to be experiencing and feeling is unpleasant and painful, being left out of the loop and it is this that is disrupting, unsettling, and disorienting for them. I can best describe them as the “true heterosexuals,” from the 10% of the end of the sexual orientation continuum that are exclusively heterosexual. They caught me off guard because they did not seem troubled by my coming out as a gay priest; their problem was that they could not identify with the reaction of majority of people. It was for this reason they felt “left out” and began feeling deeply like something was wrong with them. These people began to feel calmer and more reassured once I began to explain the intricacies related to the continuum of sexual orientation. They too began asking questions about their past that were confusing about issues of sexuality. Their questions all related to not having anyway to identify with or understanding from personal experience what means or feels like to be a homosexual. What was so striking to me that set them apart the general population was that these people they were completely without any hint of anger towards or condemnation of homosexuality. Having come out as a gay Catholic priest, I am very well prepared for an onslaught of negative and at times harsh reactions from large groups of people. I was not prepared in the least for the reactions of a true heterosexual regarding homosexuality, which caught me off guard, I was completely stunned.

Family Acceptance Project - building healthy futures for LGB youth - Dr. Caitlin Ryan * For the first time, researchers have established a clear link between rejecting behaviors of families towards lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adolescents and negative health outcomes in early adulthood… published in the January issue of Pediatrics, the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, … titled "Family Rejection as a Predictor of Negative Health Outcomes in White and Latino Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Young Adults." The paper, authored by Dr. Caitlin Ryan and her team at the César E. The Bible & Homosexual Orientation
The bible cannot be used to condemn homosexuality anymore than it could condemn Galileo because he insisted the earth revolves around the sun. Pope John Paul II in an unprecedented gesture of humility, in 1992, publically apologized to Galileo for the Vatican’s error and declared him “not guilty,” 359 years later. In 2000, Pope John Paul II’s unwavering persistence to right the wrongs of the Church in the past, and despite the resistance from inside the Vatican, he proved to be unstoppable. On March 12, 2000, he made a public apology, asking forgiveness from God for sins committed by the Church, against groups of people, “We are asking pardon for the divisions among Christians, for the use of violence that some have committed in the service of truth, and for attitudes of mistrust and hostility assumed towards followers of other religions." Pope John Paul II pleaded for the hope that “Never again,” would the Church repeat these kinds of violence. (Rory Carroll)
Over the centuries people who misunderstood or misinterpreted the Bible have done terrible things. The Bible has been misused to defend bloody crusades and tragic inquisitions; to support slavery, apartheid, and segregation; to persecute Jews and other non-Christian people of faith; to support Hitler's Third Reich and the Holocaust; to oppose medical science; to condemn interracial marriage; to execute women as witches; and to support the Ku Klux Klan. Shakespeare said it this way: "Even the devil can cite Scripture for his purpose."(Read more – Soulforce)
When Cardinal Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI, one of his first acts was to announce his intention to purge gay males from the ranks of the Catholic priesthood. When the fine print was read, however, he limited himself to preventing aggressive or militant homosexual advocates from becoming priests. Even this Pope knew full well that a purge of gay men from the ranks of the Catholic priesthood would decimate the clergy, to say nothing of culling significantly the members of the College of Cardinals, the archbishops and bishops of that Church. The duplicity and dishonesty surrounding this issue in the Roman Catholic Church is breathtaking. (Read more DignityUSA)

NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS 1933-1945
Between 1933 and 1945, Germany's National Socialist (Nazi) government under Adolf Hitler used its monopoly of authority to attempt to rid German territory of people who did not fit its vision of a "master Aryan race."…
The Nazi campaign against homosexuality targeted the more than one million German men who, the state asserted, carried a "degeneracy" that threatened the "disciplined masculinity" of Germany. Denounced as "antisocial parasites" and as "enemies of the state," more than 100,000 men were arrested under a broadly interpreted law against homosexuality. Approximately 50,000 men served prison terms as convicted homosexuals, while an unknown number were institutionalized in mental hospitals. Others—perhaps hundreds—were castrated under court order or coercion. Analyses of fragmentary records suggest that between 5,000 and 15,000 homosexual men were imprisoned in concentration camps, where many died from starvation, disease, exhaustion, beatings, and murder. The Nazis took power in January 1933 on a platform of law and order, "traditional values," and an ideology of racial purity that included virulent antisemitism and the persecution of unwanted social groups. Among its first steps to create the "New Order," the regime shut down homosexual gathering places, organizations, and publications in a broad attack on "public indecency." The Nazi assault on homosexuality had begun.
As the regime consolidated power and centralized state authority, the instruments of persecution emerged. Propaganda in the wake of a major political crisis in mid–1934 linked homosexuality to subversion, even treason, thereby encouraging public intolerance. In 1935, Nazi authorities rewrote criminal law Paragraph 175, and subsequent court interpretation radically expanded the range of punishable "indecencies between men." Enforcement of Paragraph 175 fell to the Criminal Police and the Gestapo, unified by 1936 under the SS and its leader, Reichsführer–SS Heinrich Himmler.
The nation's police forces gained extraordinary authority to employ surveillance on suspect individuals and to seize and detain "enemies of the state." During the 30 months from early 1937 to mid–1939, German police arrested almost 78,000 men under Paragraph 175, one–third of whom were convicted and sentenced to prison. Hundreds more were interned in concentration camps outside the legal process. All were subjected to brutal mistreatment at the hands of police, interrogators, and guards. Read more
“Ghost In The Nursery” of LGBT Children -> Their Impact On The “Fabric of Society”As Adults
What happens to children who are discouraged to bond with another and other human beings? They are discouraged to draw close to others by the strong influence of unsubstantiated antigay Vatican teachings. If children are disciplined sometimes severely to suppress all their nature impulses for human attachment for life what kind of people will they grow up to be? Will these people be almost completely without any human empathy for other human beings? Will they treat others as inhumanly as they were treated? Will they enhance or be a threat to the ‘fabric of society”?
Selma Fraiberg, (1987) Ghosts in the Nursery, explains how parents' own past experiences of growing up, impacts their relationship with their own child, beginning as infants. Fraiberg’s research studied the interactions between an infant and a parent, when both were left alone in a room. She observed what happens when an infant begins to cry and continues crying for an extended amount of time. Fraiberg discovered that some parents appeared undisturbed by their infant's distress and made no gesture, to soothe, calm or even to pick up their infant.
What prevented these parents from attending to their crying infants? Fraiberg’s research revealed that unconscious processes, conflicts (the Ghosts) of the parents' own past were being played out, in the same way, as these parents experienced being cared for by adults during their early childhood years growing up. The reason why some parents did not pick up their crying infants was because in the past when they were growing up, no one heard their cries or picked them up to soothe them. Not having experienced the attentiveness of a caring comforting adult when they were in distress, as children, as parents, they have no conception of the need to comfort their own crying infants.
The Ghosts In Benedict XVI's Nursery?
Important note: I mean no disrespect toPope Benedict XVI or the hierarchy, the one and only concern is the safety and well-being of children. Kids are being hurt!!!
Benedict XVI was 6 years old when Hitler rose to power in Germany where he grew up. Benedict was 18 years old when Hitler was defeated. Benedict’s early development years until he was 18 years old were 12 years growing up through the world’s most criminally inhuman totalitarian dictatorship, the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler.
What unbelievable inhuman circumstances for anyone to have to grow up in between 1933 – 1945? Remember that 90% of the world’s population has some degree of a homosexual orientation. I cannot imagine a more horrific social environment to be growing up gay in – where even the slightest look or touch of affection to someone of the same sex could get you and the person you looked at arrested and taken away. It must be remembered that a child feels negative emotions much more intensely than an adult. To yell at a child is like setting off an atomic bomb for a child. A child believes that a negative emotion will never stop that it will go on forever and forever. Try to imagine a more paralyzing, frightful form of isolation, the severest level of loneness and depression to have to live through. How traumatizing would this have been to a child growing up with any hint of a homosexual orientation and what would be the life long adverse effects?
There would not have been any conceivable thought of “coming out.” Coming out would have meant sure torture and death. How guarded, vigilant you would have had to been, as a child to conceal even the sightless hint of affection for anyone of the same sex. Above, I mention what it is like for a child to grow up gay and harshness that a child showing signs of bonding or affection might experience from his father or any adult male friend or relative. During the time of Hitler, how would a father with a son with even the slightest degree of a homosexual orientation tendency react to his son’s signs of affection? Would a father have conveyed a sense of terror in his rejection of his son?
The expertise of professionals would be needed to try to reconstruct what the social influence on a gay male child growing during the time of Hitler would have possibly been like and what kinds of effects and how they would be played out through the adult years of that person’s lifetime. We might be seeing the traumatizing effects of Benedict XVI’s youth being replayed out in his obsessive need to obliterate any and all signs or feelings of homosexuality, as in terror he had to do as a youth to stay alive. And it is his traumatizing effects that comes through his public statements against homosexuals (gays) that resonates and triggers in me the traumatizing effects I experienced while doing the qualitative research on the Holocaust (Read complete article - Auschwitz - Christmas 2008).
There is no intentional disrespect directed towards Benedict XVI but his public unsubstantiated statements against homosexuality must stop, because of the harmful effects he is inflicting onto children will last a life time, as they seemly have for him. These are our children we must protect. Keep in mind that we are speaking of 90% of the general population of children who all have some degree of a homosexual orientation. Most likely without knowing Benedict is repeating the terrorizing horror of Hitler's horrific atrocities and keeping it alive, and regenerating it by hurting children as he was hurt as a child growing up in the most inhuman social environment. Speculating, the ghosts in the Benedict XVI's nursery were ones of unbelievable inhuman terror. It is interesting to note the similarities in how Benedict XVI followed some of the same tactics that Hitler used against homosexuals. Is it possible that the abused child has become the adult abuser?
As the regime consolidated power and centralized state authority, the instruments of persecution emerged. Propaganda in the wake of a major political crisis in mid–1934 linked homosexuality to subversion, even treason, thereby encouraging public intolerance…rewrote criminal law …radically expanded the range of punishable "indecencies between men. “…ruled that any contact between men deemed to have sexual intent, even "simple looking" or "simple touching," could be grounds for arrest and conviction. Read more UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM6. DENUNCIATIONS, ARRESTS, CONVICTIONS The police work of tracking down suspected homosexuals depended largely on denunciations from ordinary citizens. Nazi propaganda that labeled homosexuals "antisocial parasites" and "enemies of the state" inflamed already existing prejudices. Citizens turned in men, often on the flimsiest evidence, for as many reasons as there were denunciations. Reflecting on the dramatic rise of legal proceedings against homosexuals since 1933, Josef Meisinger of the Reich Central Office for Combating Homosexuality and Abortion proudly remarked in April 1937: "We must naturally also take into account the greater public readiness to report [homosexuality] as a result of National Socialist education."Acting on the basis of these informants, the Gestapo and Criminal Police arbitrarily seized and questioned suspects as well as possible corroborating witnesses. Those denounced were often forced to give up names of friends and acquaintances, thereby becoming informants themselves. Where criminal proceedings once required a proved act, now a suggestive accusation sufficed. Read more - UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUMIn its search for imagined enemies, however, the Nazi leadership knew that the entrenched refusal to accept sexual otherness in broad sectors of German society provided a bedrock upon which to build a popular anti-homosexual campaign. The propaganda machine attempted to add credibility by portraying the average homosexual as fitting a “dirty old man” image, someone who principally targeted young teenage boys. Benedict XVI in the midst of the criminal negligence sandals of the hierarchy’s child sexual abuse cases, "failing to protect children," he began, even against known research at the time, to attempt to shift the global public outrage against the hierarchy, by publicly making false statements suggestively linking homosexuality as the primary cause. Benedict XVI, as soon as, he was elected pope, he had plans to remove all gay priests 2005, to ease the public outrage against the hierarchy's negligence "failing to protect children." However, at the US Catholic Bishops Conference fall meeting in November, the 2 million dollar research project that they commissioned from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice concurred with the over abundant amount of existing research that found no connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse. Gay priests are not the problem.

Scholars, journalists, and politicians have long argued about how to properly define propaganda and distinguish it from other forms of mass communication. Propaganda is biased information designed to shape public opinion and behavior.
How Does Propaganda Work?
Modern propaganda draws upon techniques and strategies used in advertising, public relations, communications, and mass psychology. It simplifies complicated issues or ideology for popular consumption, is always biased, and is geared to achieving a particular end. Propaganda generally employs symbols, whether in written, musical, or visual forms, and plays upon and channels complex human emotions towards a desired goal. It is often employed by governmental and private organizations to promote their causes and institutions and denigrate their opponents. Propaganda functions as just one weapon in the arsenal of mass persuasion.
In contrast to the ideal of an educator, who aims to foster independent judgment and thinking, the practitioner of propaganda does not aim to encourage deliberation by presenting a variety of viewpoints and leaving it up to the audience to determine which perspective is correct. The propagandist transmits only information geared to strengthen his or her case, and consciously omits detrimental information.
Not all propaganda is bad. Propaganda is used to shape opinion and behavior. Public health campaigns, for example, can utilize propaganda. Elections, even in democratic states, often display elements of propaganda, as candidates and political parties vie for office. The real danger of propaganda lies when competing voices are silenced –and unchecked, propaganda can have negative consequences.
