Sexual Repression and Pornography - Vatican's Ongoing Gay Sex Scandals

Science Shows What Sexual Repression Actually Looks Like - by Marty Klein, PhD – 11/8/10
…As reported in the Journal of Economic Perspectives,
* The rates at which people buy pornography are not wildly different from state to state;
* States where people vote for conservative candidates buy more porn than states in which people vote for progressive candidates.
…According to credit card receipts from a national provider of adult entertainment, eight of the top ten pornography-consuming states went Republican in the 2008 election. And the trend goes beyond voting. For example, states where a majority of residents agreed with the statement "I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage" bought more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. The same difference emerged for the statement "AIDS might be God's punishment for immoral sexual behavior."
And of course the state with the highest per capita purchase of online pornography is...Utah…

Red Light States: Who Buys Online Adult Entertainment? – by Benjamin Edelman – 2009
…this paper focuses on the consumption side of adult online entertainment,
and in particular on subscriber demographics and consumption patterns of those who subscribe to such websites. On the surface, this business would seem to face a number of obstacles. Regulatory and legal barriers have already been mentioned. In addition, those charging for access to adult entertainment face competition from similar content available without a fee. In the context of adult entertainment, free access offers consumers an extra benefit: online payments tend to create records documenting the fact of a customer’s purchase; consumers of free content may feel more confident that their usage will remain confidential. More broadly, measured levels of religiosity in American are high—for example, 68 percent of Americans state that the Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken
literally, according to the National Election Survey. At the same time, social critics like Levy (2005) and Paul (2005) often argue that the rise of Internet pornography is contributing to a coarsening of American culture. Do consumption patterns of online adult entertainment reveal two separate Americas? Or is the consumption of online adult entertainment widespread, regardless of legal barriers, potential for embarrassment, and even religious conviction?

Essential Secrets of Psychotherapy: The Healing Power of Clinical Wisdom (Part One) - by Stephen A. Diamond, Ph.D. - January 6, 2012
…What we don't know can hurt us. The "unconscious," as Sigmund Freud professed, is the "unknown" or "not known." That portion of subjective experience, which is obscured, invisible to consciousness, at least "at the moment." It consists largely of the parts of ourselves we deny, dissociate, despise, denigrate, dread and generally repress. What we repress comes back to haunt us with a vengeance. Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche spoke of this phenomenon as "the return of the repressed." Denial or dissociation are repressive defense mechanisms, and serve some necessary function in terms of preserving mental health. But when some significant aspect of ourselves is chronically denied or dissociated (i.e., repressed and made unconscious), the proverbial chickens eventually come home to roost. If, for instance, someone always denies their anger, these feelings will some day resurface tenfold, especially under stress, though the reason for and intensity of their rage may be unclear  and inappropriate to the current circumstances…

Homosexuals and the Third Reich
by James Steakley - 1974
...Despite, and perhaps because of, their relentless emphasis upon strength, purity, cleanliness and masculinity, the all-male Nazi groups surely contained a strong element of deeply repressed homoeroticism. The degree of repression was evidenced by the Nazi reaction to those who were openly gay. In the Bible, the scapegoat was the sacrificial animal on whose head the inchoate guilt of the entire community was placed. Homosexuals served precisely this function in the Third Reich.
The ideological rationale for the mass murder of homosexuals during the Third Reich was quite another matter. According to the doctrine of Social Darwinism, only the fittest are meant to survive, and the law of the jungle is the final arbiter of human history. If the Germans were destined to become the master race by virtue of their inherent biological superiority, the breeding stock could only be improved by the removal of degenerates.
Retarded, deformed and homosexual individuals could be eliminated with the dispassionate conscientiousness of a gardener pulling weeds. (Indeed, it is the very vehemence and passion with which homosexuals were persecuted that compels us to look beyond the pseudo-scientific rationale for a deeper, psychological dynamic.) http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/pwh/steakley-nazis.asp

The Enemy Within: Homosexuality in the Third Reich, 1933-1945  by Eliot H. Boden - 2011
...The eradication of same-sex behavior was an essential component of Nazi efforts to achieve the racial purification of Germany, defined by historian Rüdiger Lautman as “an attempt to keep the Fatherland free from taint.”Repression of homosexuality was necessary to protect a “fit and healthy social organism, the racial community, a Volksgemeinschaft,” or Volk – the pinnacle of Nazi social organization. The role of the racially-pure Volk was to uphold German traditions and disseminate Nazi ideals at the most basic level of German society, the family. In the words of Nazi propagandist Ludwig Leonhardt, the German family “embraces everything that existed spiritually and psychically as a living patrimony” and must be passed on from parents to children in order to “push our heritage ever forward, so that a German Volk may emerge out of an ever- repeated interlacing of families.”Nazi doctrine envisioned a strictly hierarchical society with the nuclear family at its core. Established gender roles and a strict division of labor between the sexes within the family reinforced patriarchal authority and engendered loyalty to the Führer and the state...

...Although homosexual behavior outwardly appeared to be incompatible with
Nazi ideology, core principles of the Nazi movement in fact aroused homoerotic tendencies. Ironically, many homosexual men were initially attracted to Nazism, which emphasized virility, strength, and comradeship to forge a strong national polity. The excessive masculinity of the Third Reich was based on the philosophical concept of the Mannerbünd, a male-dominated elite united by devotion to a shared goal. Under the Nazi regime, the patriarchal hierarchy established by the Mannerbünd was mirrored throughout German society – in the family, in the workplace, at school, and especially in the military. The Wehrmacht specifically recognized the insidious allure of male bonding, and adopted measures to punish incidents of sexual contact between soldiers. Official army directives emphasized that “the danger of homosexual activity is especially acute when healthy, youthful, and virile men live together in close physical and emotional comradeship, and have no opportunity to have sexual relations with women.”Isolated from women by the realities of war, young soldiers often vented their pent-up sexual energies on each other. As Geoffrey J. Giles notes, “Nonsexual snuggling seems to have been unexceptional” in the Schutzstaffel (SS), and most soldiers did not view further sexual exploration, such as groping or fondling, as “especially reprehensible or anything more than mildly indecent.”Even in situations in which heterosexual outlets for sexual desire were available, Nazi rhetoric exacerbated homosexual tendencies. Robert G. Waite notes that Nazi dogma, by “denigrating females, encouraged the maturing adolescent to focus on the beauty of male personality and body.”Misogyny thus reinforced homoeroticism in the Wehrmacht. While many German soldiers did not see their sexual predilections and political beliefs as fundamentally incongruous, the state was nevertheless incapable of accepting their abnormality.Homosexuals in the Third Reich were frequently disparaged as maladjusted deviants, but there was not a scientific consensus on the origins of their pathology to justify these claims...

Homophobia
"Homophobia: The fear of feeling of love for members of one's own sex and therefore the hatred of those feelings in others... the belief in the inherent superiority of one pattern of loving and thereby its right to dominance."
There are four distinct but interrelated types of homophobia: personal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural.
