P e a c e   P r a y e r   o f    S a i n t   F r a n c i s

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

Pope Francis on Thursday 14/09/2017 urged Bishops to cultivate what he called an “attitude of listening” and to avoid being “imprisoned by nostalgia.”…
And insisting on the need for all clergy to always keep contact with ordinary people he warned that without such an exchange “the faith of the most cultivated can degenerate into indifference, and that of the humblest into superstition.”

Pope Francis is not MEAN because he has the ability to EMPATHIZE - to feel what another person feels — EVEN WITH A BLACK EYE

EMPATHY is what distinguish Pope Francis from the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy. Why?

Pope Francis is not mean. This is the one most distinguishing contrasting quality between Pope Francis and the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy. That is to say Pope Francis is not “unkind, spiteful, or unfair” nor is he “vicious or aggressive.” Neither, is he a “pushover,” a weakling, or a feeble opponent. One must remember that Pope Francs was a bouncer at a nightclub in Buenos Aires, before he joined the Jesuits. Talk about discernment

Pope Francis is not mean. This is because by his example past and present - he has shown he is not afraid to meet and talk with, now, a worldwide diversity of people, from world leaders to the world's poor and everyone in between. Pope Francis is not mean, because through dialogue - he is able to empathize with an extraordinary great number of people. He is able understand to feel what another person’s feels and thinks. It is called empathy NOT sympathy. Empathy exceeds - it goes beyond sympathy. Sympathy is feeling compassion, sorrow, or pity for those suffering. Empathy is the non-judgmental action of actually putting oneself into another person’s shoes - to see and feel the world as that person sees and feels the world. I made reference to this phenomenon in Part 2 of this series. With your walls down and your judgmental attitude in the deep freeze - as the other person begins to trust you that person will slowly let you into his or her world - it is quite profound and sacred. You will feel what the other person feels and in the way that person’s feels it - not clouded or distorted by our personal biases. One learns that the feeling of sadness is felt differently by every human being. You are never the same, we are changed forever, because meeting people in this manner they become etched in our minds, especially their traumatic events in their lives. We will experience the impact of their traumatic emotion attached to their traumatic events. It is evident that Pope Francis has traveled this road numerous of times in his life and has experienced and I believe even traumatized by “man’s inhumanity to man” that he experienced. It cannot be erased - it becomes the motivation to do something to prevent it from ever happening again.

"These People Are Frightened to Death"

Congressional Investigations and the Lavender Scare
Summer 2016, Vol. 48, No. 2
"These People Are Frightened to Death"
The Red Scare, the congressional witch-hunt against Communists during the early years of the Cold War, is a well-known chapter of American history. A second scare of the same era has been much slower to make its way into public consciousness, even though it lasted far longer and directly impacted many more lives.
Beginning in the late 1940s and continuing through the 1960s, thousands of gay employees were fired or forced to resign from the federal workforce because of their sexuality. Dubbed the Lavender Scare, this wave of repression was also bound up with anti-Communism and fueled by the power of congressional investigation.
The purge followed an era in which gay people were increasingly finding each other and forming communities in urban America. During World War II, many men and women left behind the restrictions of rural or small-town life for the first time. After the war, young people poured into cities, where density and anonymity made pursuit of same-sex relationships more possible than ever.
By the late 1940s, even the general public was becoming more aware of homosexuality. Alfred Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, published in 1948, became a bestseller and drew attention for its claim that same-sex experiences were relatively common.
This publicity did not, however, make homosexuality more acceptable, in part because virtually no gay people were open about their sexuality. Also, the country was in the midst of a more general sex-crime panic, stirred up by a few highly publicized cases. In this context, greater public awareness of homosexuality coincided with growing unease and, in many parts of the country, an increase in official repression. Certainly this was true in Washington, D.C.
In 1947 the U.S. Park Police initiated in the city a "Sex Perversion Elimination Program," targeting gay men for arrest and intimidation. A year later, Congress passed an act "for the treatment of sexual psychopaths" in the nation's capital. That law facilitated the arrest and punishment of people who acted on same-sex desire and also labeled them mentally ill. Homosexuality was perceived as a lurking subversive threat at a time when the country was coping with tremendous social change as well as rising anxiety about another lurking subversive threat: Communism.
Enter Senator Joseph McCarthy, whose rhetoric explicitly associated Communists and gay people, turning the slow burn of repression into a firestorm. On February 9, 1950, McCarthy delivered his now-famous speech in which he claimed to have a list of 205 known Communists working at the State Department.
On February 20, McCarthy spoke at length on the Senate floor, offering more specifics about some of these individuals, this time characterizing them more broadly as "unsafe risks." Two cases concerned homosexuality.

"Case 14" was, according to McCarthy, a known homosexual who had been ousted by the State Department but then rehired. In his discussion of that man and of "Case 62," McCarthy directly linked homosexuality and Communism. A top intelligence official had reportedly told him that "practically every active Communist is twisted mentally or physically in some way." McCarthy implied that the men in these two cases were susceptible to Communist recruitment because as homosexuals they had what he called "peculiar mental twists.”…

Pope Francis is not alone in this kind of traumatizing human experience that is life-changing that motivates a person to work to make a difference to fight against “man’s inhumanity to man.” The world renowned historian on Hitler and the Nazi regime, Ian Kershaw - was shocked by the same “man’s inhumanity to man.”

…In 1972, he visited Bavaria and was shocked to hear the views of an old man he met in a Munich café who told him: "You English were so foolish. If only you had sided with us. Together we could have defeated Bolshevism and ruled the earth!"—adding in for good measure that "The Jew is a louse!” As a result of this incident, Kershaw became keen to learn how and why ordinary people in Germany could support the Nazi ideology (National Socialism or Nazism)…

Dr. Evelyn Hooker had experienced the Nazi dehumanization of the Jewish people 1937-38 and in 1953, she was triggered by US Senator Joseph McCarthy's dehumanizing witch-hunts for homosexuals in 1950s that out of empathy led to her ground breaking research proving that homosexuality is not a mental illness in 1957 - dispelling all societal prejudices against homosexuals. She later tells that it was not courage that compelled her to do the research it was curiosity and empathy. "Hooker's work was the first to empirically test the assumption that gay men were mentally unhealthy and maladjusted. The fact that no differences were found between gay and straight participants sparked more research in this area and began to dismantle the myth that homosexual men and women are inherently unhealthy (http://www.apa.org/research/action/gay.aspx)." However, her ground breaking research in 1957 and all the subsequent research that followed in the wake of her empirical evidence proving the normalcy of gay people is the same as straight people - this science has been consistently ignored during US election years, by politicians and especially by the Roman Catholic curia and hierarchy. This is a vivid example of what the absence of empathy looks like and the global atrocities that followed in its wake. Instead, old societal prejudices against homosexuals have been continually exploited in the United States, in the same way they were exploited by Hitler that allowed him to become dictator of Nazi Germany, 1933.

Dr. Evelyn Hooker, a psychologist who defied conventional wisdom and greatly emboldened the fledgling gay rights movement in the 1950's by finding there was no measurable psychological difference between homosexual and heterosexual men…
At the peak of the McCarthy period, in 1953, she applied for and received a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. ''They talk about all this courage I'm supposed to have had,'' she recalled four decades later, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times. ''I don't get that. Curiosity and empathy were what compelled me to do my study.’'

In 1953, Evelyn Hooker, PhD, applied for a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) grant to conduct research on “normal homosexuals.” During this period of American history, Sen. Joseph McCarthy was seeking out communists wherever he suspected they might be lurking; homosexual acts were a crime; bomb shelters were springing up in backyards; and the term “normal” homosexual was thought to be an oxymoron. A variety of medical and psychological treatments to “cure” homosexuality were employed, including ice pick lobotomies, electroshock, chemical castration with hormonal treatment or aversive conditioning. Gay parties were raided by the police, particularly in election years when a crackdown on “sexual perversion” was seen as a positive step in the fight on crime…
Evelyn Hooker was born Evelyn Gentry Sept. 2, 1907 in North Platte, Neb., the sixth of nine children…Her family was quite poor, and neither parent was educated past fourth grade. Her adolescence was colored by these social stigmata; she attributed her study of “an oppressed, deprived people,” (homosexual men) to her early experience (Garnets & Kimmel, 2003, p. 36)…she completed her doctorate in experimental psychology at Johns Hopkins University in 1932…A fellowship in 1937–38 took her to Berlin to pursue her increasing interest in clinical psychology at the Institute for Psychotherapy. She lived with a Jewish family and witnessed, with dismay, Hitler’s rise to power. Much later, after her return to the United States, she learned that all members of her host family perished in the concentration camps
Stimulated by her experience with various forms of discrimination and her friendship with From, Hooker began interviewing gay men who were friends or friends of friends…

JK Rowling as a young woman in her early 20’s was working “at the African research department at Amnesty International’s headquarters in London.” In her, June 5, 2008, commencement address at Harvard University, she tells of her many experiences working at Amnesty. “Every day, I saw more evidence about the evils humankind will inflict on their fellow humans, to gain or maintain power. I began to have nightmares, literal nightmares, about some of the things I saw, heard, and read.” She tells how what she experienced while working at Amnesty had informed much of what she wrote in her Harry Potter books. She tells of one particular experience that sounds like it was traumatizing for her - I think that it would be traumatizing for anyone. She balances this traumatic event by also telling about learning more about human goodness and the power of human empathy leading to collective action to save lives.

I shall never forget the African torture victim, a young man no older than I was at the time, who had become mentally ill after all he had endured in his homeland. He trembled uncontrollably as he spoke into a video camera about the brutality inflicted upon him. He was a foot taller than I was, and seemed as fragile as a child. I was given the job of escorting him back to the Underground Station afterwards, and this man whose life had been shattered by cruelty took my hand with exquisite courtesy, and wished me future happiness.
And as long as I live I shall remember walking along an empty corridor and suddenly hearing, from behind a closed door, a scream of pain and horror such as I have never heard since. The door opened, and the researcher poked out her head and told me to run and make a hot drink for the young man sitting with her. She had just had to give him the news that in retaliation for his own outspokenness against his country’s regime, his mother had been seized and executed.
Every day of my working week in my early 20s I was reminded how incredibly fortunate I was, to live in a country with a democratically elected government, where legal representation and a public trial were the rights of everyone…
And yet I also learned more about human goodness at Amnesty International than I had ever known before.
Amnesty mobilises thousands of people who have never been tortured or imprisoned for their beliefs to act on behalf of those who have. The power of human empathy, leading to collective action, saves lives, and frees prisoners. Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet. My small participation in that process was one of the most humbling and inspiring experiences of my life.
Unlike any other creature on this planet, humans can learn and understand, without having experienced. They can think themselves into other people’s places…
And many prefer not to exercise their imaginations at all. They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are. They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages; they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know.
I might be tempted to envy people who can live that way, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do. Choosing to live in narrow spaces leads to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the wilfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid.
What is more, those who choose not to empathise enable real monsters. For without ever committing an act of outright evil ourselves, we collude with it, through our own apathy

The Absence of Empathy among the Curia and Hierarchy

Decades of documentation reveals that the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy - their lack the empathy. “Empathy is the experience of understanding another person's condition from their perspective. You place yourself in their shoes and feel what they are feeling.” Their obsessive antigay crusade raged on unabated until Pope Francis came on the scene. It has gone ruthlessly underground.  Pope Francis’s Christmas address to the curia December 22, 2014 is a list of their inability to connect to others - to be able experience what another person is feeling. The curia is a war zone of never ending internal fighting and gay closeted acting out behaviors. Even their gay sexual acting out escapades are always related to taking drugs - the need to be intoxicated even to have sex with anonymous partners or male prostitutes. Why? Their gay escapades are as disconnected from human attachment from their sexual partners as their work relationships are inside the curia. As I was told in class by a renown professor who knew that I was a faithful celibate Catholic priest that “The way you make love is the way you do everything in life.” In observing the behavior of the curia and hierarchy that statement appears to be true - of course this does not include everyone - only the majority of the members. It is clearly indicates the complete lack of empathy among themselves.  This situation is horrifically sad on many different levels.  How did this happen? They have been able to make the world a closet through their reenactments of the traumatic events that happened in their early childhood years being forced to suppress their gay sexual orientation. Their reenactments are violent, a never ending irrational meanness - completely absence of any hint of empathy in the same way they were abused as children.  It appears all around that these men are very unhappy men - victims of this unidentified for of child abuse.  It has robbed them of a life of being interconnected in lifelong fulfilling relationships that are fostered through the developmental learned ability of empathy. It has left them in a  suffocating abyss of never ending self-hatred - all for something that is beyond their ability to control - the automatic and continuous functioning of their gay sexual orientation. Their never ending obsession to suppress any open discussion of the science of homosexuality for the past several decades - is an obvious red flag about the truth of their sexual orientation.

Their inability to empathize has indeed enabled real monsters in the world. Because their refusal to open dialogue the science on homosexuality for the past 60 years, is beginning to be seen as a collective form of repression. But it has also allowed the societal prejudice against gay people to increase and to be exploited like they were by Hitler and to help advance globalization.  How did this happen?

Absence of Empathy
Catholic University of America
E n a b l i n g   R e a l   M o n s t e r s

It is an extraordinary scandal and sacrilege that the Theological College at the Catholic University of America gave into the emotionally disturbed screaming hysterics and withdrew their invitation to Fr. James Martin to speak their alumni (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2017/09/16/popular-priest-disinvited-from-catholic-universitys-seminary-after-protests-over-his-lgbt-book/?utm_term=.8a79007b35f6). They were emotionally disturbed because they offered no authoritative rationale for their objections against Fr. Martin other than the irrational fear and ignorance of social norms. It is a horrific scene that has been played over and over again throughout history - most notably at the time of Jesus with Pontius Pilate, who also was spineless and gave into the screaming hysterics crying out, "Crucify him! Crucify him!” We heard the same mass hysteria throughout the Republican National Convention - the participants kept crying out “Lock her up! Lock her up!" WE DO NOT give into mass hysteria. It exposes the extreme lack of moral integrity of the Catholic University of America, and the US bishops - their commitment for the search for truth and the absence of empathy. The decision to disinvite Fr. Martin was clearly not based on truth obtained through the dialogue between science and religion and therefore according to Pope Benedict XVI without truth there is no love (Caritas in Veritate 2009).

Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way. In a culture without truth, this is the fatal risk facing love. It falls prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word “love” is abused and distorted, to the point where it comes to mean the opposite. Truth frees charity from the constraints of an emotionalism that deprives it of relational and social content, and of a fideism that deprives it of human and universal breathing-space. In the truth, charity reflects the personal yet public dimension of faith in the God of the Bible, who is both Agápe and Lógos: Charity and Truth, Love and Word…
Without truth, charity is confined to a narrow field devoid of relations. It is excluded from the plans and processes of promoting human development of universal range, in dialogue between knowledge and praxis…
Reason always stands in need of being purified by faith: this also holds true for political reason, which must not consider itself omnipotent. For its part, religion always needs to be purified by reason in order to show its authentically human face. Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development…

We do not give into screaming hysterics - who are acting exactly like a two year child throwing tantrum. We let their tantrum run its course and then we follow it by a dialogue of educating them about the science on homosexuality and religion. It is this type of hysterical disregard for truth that allowed the societal prejudices against homosexuals to be exploited by Hitler to win the conservatives votes he needed to become the dictator of Nazi Germany. They have been exploited in the USA for the past 3 decades that helped to usher in the devastating effects of Globalization. Archbishops Weakland in defense of Archbishop Hunthausen in 1986 spoke out against this same type of the suppression of truth “…there is a need ''to avoid the fanaticism and small-mindedness that has characterized so many periods of the church in its history - tendencies that lead to much cruelty, suppression of theological creativity and lack of growth (http://www.nytimes.com/1986/09/24/us/leading-archbishop-challenges-vatican-on-silencing-dissent.html?mcubz=0).’’ The Catholic University of America decision to disinvite Fr. Martin is most harmful to children and to perpetuating the same violence by destroying human empathy.

Fr. Martin’s response to this cancellation was quite to the heart of the matter - identifying the profound meanness contained in these fiercely antigay websites that has been twisted around and presented as goodness. He stated that “What’s most disappointing is what these cancellations say about our Church,…It’s a sign of the inability of certain Catholics even to consider the possibility that we are called by Jesus to reach out to our LGBT Catholic brothers, sisters, and siblings.” It is an example of the overall absence of human empathy. Fr. Martin makes it clear that “These aren’t websites or blogs motivated by love. Just a glance at their invective will tell you that. No, they traffic in hatred and they foment fear. Fear of possible protests, fear of controversy, fear of listening…Perfect love drives out fear, as we learn in the New Testament…But perfect fear drives out love. But I’m not deterred or even disturbed (https://cruxnow.com/church-in-the-usa/2017/09/16/backlash-martins-lgbt-book-prompts-speech-cancellations/).” Fr. Martin’s response indicates he was well aware of what he was getting into by writing his book and by accepting Pope Francis appointing him as a consultant to the Vatican's Secretariat for Communications. No easy job to undertake, but from my perspective he is protecting children’s lives, helping to dispel the prejudges against gay people and preventing these unsubstantiated antigay prejudges from being exploited in the future. Thank God for Fr. James Martin and for a number of bishops like him, who are courageous or maybe strongly motivated by empathy speaking up for gay people, which is always supportive of gay children. They are inspiring to many people, helping auspiciously to make the moral fabric of our global society stronger in Christ.

Fr. James Martin uninvited from talk at CUA seminary
September 16, 2017
The national seminary in the United States revoked an invitation to Jesuit Fr. James Martin to speak on campus after a campaign among far-right church groups flooded the school with opposition to the priest’s new book on LGBT Catholics.
Martin, editor at large of America magazine and a consultor to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communication, was set to speak to alumni at Theological College at the Catholic University of America on Oct. 4. On Friday, he was notified that the presentation, which was scheduled more than a year in advance, would no longer take place.
In a statement, Theological College said that since the publication of Martin’s latest book — Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity — it “has experienced increasing negative feedback from various social media sites regarding the seminary’s invitation” to the popular Jesuit priest…

Bishop McElroy: Attacks on Father James Martin expose a cancer within the U.S. Catholic Church
September 18, 2017
Father James Martin is a distinguished Jesuit author who has spent his life building bridges within the Catholic Church and between the church and the wider world. He has been particularly effective in bringing the Gospel message to the millennial generation. When we survey the vast gulf that exists between young adults and the church in the United States, it is clear that there could be no more compelling missionary outreach for the future of Catholicism than the terrain that Father Martin has passionately and eloquently pursued over the past two decades. There are few evangelizers who have engaged that terrain with more heart and skill and devotion.
Last year Father Martin undertook a particularly perilous project in this work of evangelization: building bridges between the church and the L.G.B.T. community in the United States. He entered it knowing that the theological issues pertaining to homosexuality constituted perhaps the most volatile element of ecclesial life in U.S. culture.
It was this very volatility that spurred Father Martin to write his new book Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the L.G.B.T. Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion and Sensitivity. Using a methodology that is fully consonant with Catholic teaching, employing Scripture, the rich pastoral heritage of the church and an unadulterated realism that makes clear both the difficulty and the imperative for establishing deeper dialogue, Father Martin opens a door for proclaiming that Jesus Christ and his church seek to embrace fully and immediately men and women in the L.G.B.T. community.
Building a Bridge is a serious book, and any such work invites substantive criticism and dialogue. This is particularly true with a complex subject like the relationship of the L.G.B.T. community and the church. Many analyses of Father Martin’s arguments have pointed to important problems that do not have easy answers and to the reality that dialogue must always proceed both in respect and in truth.
But alongside this legitimate and substantive criticism of Father Martin’s book, there has arisen both in Catholic journals and on social media a campaign to vilify Father Martin, to distort his work, to label him heterodox, to assassinate his personal character and to annihilate both the ideas and the dialogue that he has initiated.
This campaign of distortion must be challenged and exposed for what it is—not primarily for Father Martin’s sake but because this cancer of vilification is seeping into the institutional life of the church. Already, several major institutions have canceled Father Martin as a speaker. Faced with intense external pressures, these institutions have bought peace, but in doing so they have acceded to and reinforced a tactic and objectives that are deeply injurious to Catholic culture in the United States and to the church’s pastoral care for members of the L.G.B.T. communities…

Pope Francis

In part 2, I explained that Pope Francis’s arrival on the scene, he was a like “a fish out of water,” because of the striking contrast between social environment of Argentina, where he was born and raised and the social environments of Europe and the United States where the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy were born and raised.

The contrast between the social environments in which these men were born and raised - centers specifically on how homosexuals people were treated. The social environments both in the Europe (Hitler and the Nazi regime 1933-1945) and in the United States (late 1940s thru the 1960s - Joe McCarthy), clearly demonstrated the evils of humankind by how the ignorance and fear of the social prejudices against homosexuals were exploited publicly to gain and to maintain government power over people.

However, in Argentina this contrast in social environment regarding homosexuals - could not be more extremely the opposite from Europe and the United States. Not only is the degree of the violence of the social prejudices against homosexuals compared to Europe and the United States - non-existent in Argentina, but since the late 1800s men have been dancing the tango together to the present time. This type cultural difference implicitly dispels all the prejudices against homosexuals, that goes double for the absurdity of connecting pedophilia with homosexuality. Notably, absent in Argentina is the all consuming antigay obsession that engulfs the every waking moment of the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy born and raised in the social environments of Europe and the United States.

This drastic contrast regarding the treatment of homosexuals continues to be played out at the Vatican and can be clearly identified in the way Pope Francis treats gay people and the way the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy demonizes them and their refusal to openly discuss anything regarding gay people, especially the idea of valuing committed long lasting gay relationships

From the start of his papacy March 2013 - Pope Francis did not fit in with the dominant organizational culture of the Vatican, which was highly homophobic european, including the homophobic attitude of the hierarchy of the United States. This extreme contrast caught immediate lasting global attention by an off-the-cuff remark that Pope Francis made in flight during a news conference, July 29, 2013 when asked about his acceptance of a gay priest, he responded “Who am I to judge?” However, he had sparked the world’s attention after his election from the news media investigations into his past life and found evidence of his major concerned for the poor. Equally, catching the news media attention was the fact that the day after he was elected - he scooted out on foot from the Vatican on his own (no bodyguards) to pay his hotel bill and greeted people along the way. The news media seemed to be stunned by Pope Francis’s surprising congenial “down-to-earth” unpretentious, approachable rapport - not ever associated with the Vatican. Time proved that this was Pope Francis’s personality and he genuinely cared daily about the poor and all the marginalized groups, including gay people. Pope Francis seemed able to talk to anyone, any group and was never mean to anyone.

As Pope Francis continued to endlessly perform his duties as pope: reforming the curia, meeting throngs of people, giving interviews, admonishing the curia and hierarchy for their lack of concern of others, calling for the input of everyone in the world on aspects of family - to be discuss at the two synod sessions on family - unintentionally he was revealing the depths of this contrast of being raised in social environments that were severely antigay and the social environment where men dance the tango together.

The visual difference in this contrast is crucial in understanding how destructive societal antigay attitudes are to children throughout their lives - growing up in an antigay social environment. It is a visual difference between the expression of empathy for others and the absence of empathy. In actuality, what we are observing is the contrast between childhood re-enactments

Argentina was completely void of the severity of societal antigay attitudes, in fact quite the opposite - the cultural acceptance and respect of men dancing the tango together - the early childhood development of empathy was not hindered.

The ignorance and irrational fear of societal antigay attitudes were deliberately fostered and increased for exploitive purposes in Europe and the United States - they were severely pervasive and lethal - the early childhood development of empathy was greatly hindered.

The majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy are re-enacting only what they know, which is the way they were treated as children without empathy. They are clueless of the meaning to empathy, because no one tried to understand them the way they perceived the world, as gay children. The development of empathy in these men as children was severely hindered. So, what we are hearing from them in their emotional explosive outbursts of antigay hostility is the absence of empathy at that time in early childhood when it was withdrawn from them and the ongoing absence of empathy by their continually being exposed to societal antigay attitudes in Europe (Hitler) and the United States (Joseph McCarthy).

This is the same emotionally explosive outbursts of antigay hostility - the absence of empathy is what the Theological College at the Catholic University of America was hearing from these emotionally disturbed antigay screaming hysterics that prompted them to withdraw their invitation to Fr. James Martin to speak to the their alumni. The reason why these screaming hysterics prompted the men at CUA to disinvite Fr. Martin was because it brought to the conscious surface of these men their own internalized homophobia. Alice Miller explains how such re-enactments reveals the whole history of early childhood the absence of empathic treatment

It is seems that unconsciously - Fr. Martin may represent to these screaming antigay hysterics - a return to the same un-empathic caring of an adult caregiver. However, Fr. Martin is anything but un-empathic. He was so moved by the Orlando shootings June 2016 that it seems that out true empathy he was motivated to write his book Building a Bridge. His manner appears to be most un-intrusive - it is phenomenal gymnastic exercise in the use of empathy trying to understand the depths of both sides of a most volatile subject and then begin a dialogue. No easy undertaking - it is like walking into a den of lions. This is his work building a bridge. Well, we are all blessed that he is still alive. It was true wisdom to combined this dialogue with prayer. His sincerity does come across, as being real and conveys a willingness to listen in order to understand without bias or a judgmental attitude. I guess what I am trying to say is that Fr. Martin gives out plenty of evidence that he is a safe person to trust, the perfect person to initiate this dialogue on gay people. However, his empathic caring can be perceived as a real traumatic threat to those who were - one too many times - crushed as children by trusting an adult(s) who turned out to be most un-emapthic. In these abusive childhood experiences - the meaning of pleasant and unpleasant are reversed. That means - that pleasant is to be avoided and unpleasant is to be trusted. Yes, it is twisted. Pope Benedict XVI writes about the meaning of the word love is so abused that it comes to mean the opposite (2009). Notice how these screaming CUA antigay hysterics all huddle together - misery loves company. They do not want any empathic understanding - they prefer to hold onto their misery, because they have come to trust misery as safe. This is not an uncommon behavioral reaction - we are all susceptible in many various ways - where we prefer to be miserable, because we trust misery more than we fear goodness. True love can be quite frightening, even scorned.

The phase “un-empathic caring” most accurately describes how gay children growing up are forced to suppress their gay sexual orientation. We know that a person’s sexual orientation is all about love - it cannot be suppressed. And any attempt to suppress a child’s sexual orientation is forcing a child never to fall in love with anyone. It is like loving parents suffocating their child (a most violent act) and conveying to the child - it is for your own good - “un-empathic caring.”

FOR YOUR OWN GOOD
Hidden cruelty in child-rearing and the roots of violence
By Alice Miller 1980
...In the earliest stage of life, it is possible for a child to forget about the extreme acts of cruelty he or she has endured and to idealize their perpetrator. But the nature of the subsequent enactment reveals that the whole history of early persecution was stored up somewhere; the drama now unfolds in front of the spectators with an amazing resemblance to the original situation but under another guise: in the reenactment, the child who was once persecuted now becomes the persecutor...Read more: http://playpen.icomtek.csir.co.za/~acdc/education/Dr_Anvind_Gupa/Learners_Library_7_March_2007/Resources/books/alicemiller.pd

The Theological College at the Catholic University of America and the other institutions who out of fear - reacted to the emotionally disturbed antigay screaming hysterics by disinviting Fr. James Martin are colluding with this “un-empathic caring” - by re-enacting the “residual antigay attitudes”of their own emotional internalized homophobia. We must step back when we are presented with the surprised onslaught of fierce emotional antigay hostility and allow the emotionalism to subside and then to actively return to the rational thinking of the truth that has been gather from the dialogue between science and religion on homosexuality.

WE DO NOT give into antigay mass hysteria - void of any rational reasoning. It is the same reason why I will continue to challenge this antigay hysterical attempt to try to remove me from the priesthood - because it is all based on early childhood antigay emotionalism - the same “un-empathic caring” void of any dialogue between science and religion on homosexuality. It publicly exposes the truth about the internalized homophobia existing in all the members of the curia and hierarchy who were involved in this unwarranted attempt to remove me from the priesthood all done in secret "behind close doors." Their  internalized homophobia can easily be proven, by assessing their academic proficiency on the science of the sexual orientation of homosexuality and their ability to openly discuss the details of their individual sexual orientation. The truth of the answers to these inquiries will be exposed that their judgment is totally based on the ignorance and fear of homosexuality. These men drenched in massive amounts of internalized homophobia are a threat to all humanity - they are enabling real monsters. For me TO GIVE INTO this curia's and hierarchy's antigay mass hysteria - is to abandon children - in the same way that these men were abandoned in their early childhood years growing up. I would then be colluding with their inability to empathize and as JK Rowling discovered working “at the African research department at Amnesty International’s headquarters in London” I would be enabling real monsters, like Hitler and globalization. It also needs to be stated that there are a number members of the curia and hierarchy, who have been supportive of gay people and this has been helping to make a difference for the better. Since, Pope Francis has arrived - he has been supported in making major changes to reverse this antigay mass hysteria restoring a true sense of empathy, not just for gay people, but all for all people in need, including children - this has all helped to prevented the enabling of real monsters. Again, it is no easy job, but we are all very thankful for their every effort.

Pope Francis was never exposed from early childhood to any extreme antigay societal attitudes. It was evident that Pope Francis was clueless that is he was not mentally saturated, as the curia and hierarchy were with the endless promptings of the lifelong harmful effects of internalized homophobia. Internalized homophobia refers “to the internalization of societal antigay attitudes in lesbians and gay men” defined as “the gay person’s direction of negative social attitudes toward the self, leading to a devaluation of the self and resultant internal conflicts and poor self-regard.” “Because of the strength of early socialization experiences, and because of continued exposure to antigay attitudes, internalized homophobia remains an important factor in the gay person’s psychological adjustment throughout life. Gay people maintain varying degrees of residual antigay attitudes that are integrated into their self- perception that can lead to mental health problems…(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2072932/pdf/nihms32623.pdf).”

It exposed the distinct contrast between the two social environments - one that strongly appears to foster the development and the presence of empathy and the other that firmly contributes of the absence of empathy. The curia expressed the absence of empathy - their inability to meet and work with people. The Vatileaks of 2012 exposed the curia beset with endless internal infighting, conflicts, absorbed in struggles to obtain higher more prestigious positions inside the Vatican. Pope Francis expressed empathy for all people. He was not afraid to meet and dialogue with people without forcing his thoughts and beliefs on them. He demonstrated this in one of his first press interviews with Italian atheist the La Repubblica journalist Eugenio Scalfari (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/on-faith/pope-francis-stirs-debate-yet-again-with-interview-with-an-atheist-italian-journalist/2013/10/01/9e7a6790-2acb-11e3-97a3-ff2758228523_story.html?utm_term=.f89d0f75c231).

The Pope: how the Church will change
by EUGENIO SCALFARI
1 October 2013
…The Pope comes in and shakes my hand, and we sit down. The Pope smiles and says: "Some of my colleagues who know you told me that you will try to convert me."
It's a joke, I tell him. My friends think it is you want to convert me.
He smiles again and replies: "Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense. We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us. Sometimes after a meeting I want to arrange another one because new ideas are born and I discover new needs. This is important: to get to know people, listen, expand the circle of ideas. The world is crisscrossed by roads that come closer together and move apart, but the important thing is that they lead towards the Good.”…

Pope Francis proved that he could not be controlled by the internalized homophobic fear that had gripped and paralyzed the individual members of the curia - the pervasive fear of being exposed as a homosexual. Nor was Pope Francis doused into believing all the false claims made against homosexuals by Hitler and the Nazi regime (Europe), including US Senator Joseph McCarthy (USA) such as, connecting homosexuality with pedophilia. These false claims were made against homosexuals, by Hitler in order to increase the public's exaggerated fears about homosexuals to then be used for the exploitive purpose as a smokescreen: to (1) camouflage Hitler’s irrational and diabolical racial ideology, (2) as the rationale for his “well-publicized closures of gay bars in big cities” that he designed to play up to the homosexual prejudices of the  conservatives in order to win their votes he needed to become dictator, and again (3) to avoid any public outcry for silencing and removing the anti-nazi opposition of the Catholic clergy to concentration camps.
Pope Francis was like Teflon - immune to the irrational prejudices against gay people - such attempts to ignite a hysterical reaction by these false homophobic claims that so easily triggered an immediate hysterical firestorm of fear in the curia in order to control them - just rolled off Pope Francis leaving him unfazed. It would not stick to Pope Francis, because there was no internalized homophobia embedded in him from early childhood - because there were not any societal antigay attitudes in Argentina to internalize. The development of empathy was not hindered in Argentina by the ignorance and fear of gay people.

Pope Francis exhibits no behavioral reactions indicating that he shares in any way the Vatican’s homophobic (an extreme and irrational aversion to homosexuality and homosexual people) culture that has engulfed the Vatican for the past several decades. On the contrary, July 29, 2013, the striking contrast of his compassionate off-the-cuff response of 5 short words ‘Who Am I to Judge?’ regarding the scandalous past of a gay priest that Pope Francis appointed to the Vatican bank, IOR - had inadvertently exposed that the cruelty of the Vatican’s homophobia and the fact that it is infamously well-known globally. News reporters were totally surprised by Pope Francis now famous healing statement that “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” The news reporters naturally commented on the stark contrast between Pope Francis’s respectful words about gay people and the Vatican condemning stance of homosexuals - “For generations, homosexuality has largely been a taboo topic for the Vatican, ignored altogether or treated as “an intrinsic moral evil…(http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/30/world/europe/pope-francis-gay-priests.html?_r=0).’”

Nor was Pope Francis able to be triggered into cowering into some kind of a catatonic state of immobilizing fear because of the blackmail threat of being exposed as a homosexual because of his friendship with a gay priest. Pope Francis was unfettered by curia’s blackmailing culture regarding their sexual missteps. Instead, of evoking fear in Pope Francis by some petty gay nonsense - the scheming curia blackmailers must have been surprised when he reverted to acting like a nightclub bouncer and “blew them out of the water” that is he utterly destroyed their plan, including their blackmailing weapon of preying on the internalized homophobia of the closeted gay clerics. It was like Pope Francis had just bowled a strike - knocking down the strategic scaffolding of exploited tactics used for the past several decades to control the Vatican bank. “Francis said that homosexuals should be treated with dignity, and that no one should be subjected to blackmail or pressure because of sexual orientation.” At the time, by Pope Francis keeping the gay priest in his position at the Vatican bank - he made the sharp distinction between homosexuality and the sexual abuse of children, which is criminal behavior.

Reflections on Pope Francis
Is he a reformer, a traditionalist, or both?

Pope Francis's statements on gay priests and same-sex marriages have come under intense public scrutiny. In response to the question of why he had not removed Monsignor Battista Ricca, whom he had appointed to a supervisory group at the Vatican Bank, he affirmed his nonjudgmental affirmation of the person and his willingness to keep him in the position— despite allegations that Monsignor Ricca had a homosexual relationship in his past. He has distinguished sharply between homosexuality and sexual abuse of children, which he has labeled as criminal behavior. His response took people by surprise. On the one hand, it represents a very traditional position, distinguishing between a homosexual person and a homosexual act and maintaining that homosexuals, like heterosexuals, could aspire to the priesthood as long as they were celibate. On the other hand, his statement represents a stark change from recent attitudes…

The key distinguishing characteristic between Pope Francis and the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy - is empathy. Pope Francis is not mean. He is able to feel what another person thinks and feels. Empathy is notably completely absent among the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy. It is hard not to acknowledge the similarities of the absence of empathy - between the curia's and hierarchy's fundamental rigidity to rules to sanction their severe antigay obsessive violence, though not based on science, and continues to be engulfed in closeted gay sex scandals and the same similarities that is found in other severely antigay groups of people like ISIS, and Uganda, including the fact that Uganda and Pakistan lead the way globally in internet searching for gay pornography. And the same extreme antigay hypocrisy denoting the absence of empathy - is found among prominent public leaders in governments and religious organizations - all severely denouncing even demonizing gay people and later these same individuals are found having anonymous gay sex with male prostitutes.  Is there a pattern here and what does in tell us about the sexual orientation of homosexuality? Internalized homophobia appears to play a key factor in these men.

Ilan H. Meyer - Columbia University
Internalized homophobia
—In the most proximal position along the continuum from the environment to the self, internalized homophobia represents a form of stress that is internal and insidious. In the absence of overt negative events, and even if one’s minority status is successfully concealed, lesbians and gay men may be harmed by directing negative social values toward the self. Thoits (1985, p. 222) described such a process of self-stigmatization, explaining that “role-taking abilities enable individuals to view themselves from the imagined perspective of others. One can anticipate and respond in advance to others’ reactions regarding a contemplated course of action.”
Clinicians use the term internalized homophobia to refer to the internalization of societal antigay attitudes in lesbians and gay men (e.g., Malyon, 1981–1982). Meyer and Dean (1998) defined internalized homophobia as “the gay person’s direction of negative social attitudes toward the self, leading to a devaluation of the self and resultant internal conflicts and poor self-regard” (p. 161). After they accept their stigmatized sexual orientation, LGB people begin a process of coming out. Optimally, through this process they come to terms with their homosexuality and develop a healthy identity that incorporates their sexuality (Cass, 1979, 1984;Coleman, 1981–1982;Troiden, 1989). Internalized homophobia signifies the failure of the coming out process to ward off stigma and thoroughly overcome negative self-perceptions and attitudes (Morris et al., 2001). Although it is most acute early in the coming out process, it is unlikely that internalized homophobia completely abates even when the person has accepted his or her homosexuality. Because of the strength of early socialization experiences, and because of continued exposure to antigay attitudes, internalized homophobia remains an important factor in the gay person’s psychological adjustment throughout life. Gay people maintain varying degrees of residual antigay attitudes that are integrated into their self- perception that can lead to mental health problems (Cabaj, 1988;Hetrick & Martin, 1984;Malyon, 1981–1982;Nungesser, 1983). Gonsiorek (1988) called such residual internalized homophobia “covert,” and said, “Covert forms of internalized homophobia are the most common. Affected individuals appear to accept themselves, yet sabotage their own efforts in a variety of ways” (p. 117)…

Destruction of Empathy

Austrian psychoanalyst and physician Rene Spitz proposed…that infants in institutions suffered from lack of love–that they were missing important parental relationships, which in turn was hurting or even killing them.

We know that from birth and throughout a person’s lifetime - we are always in need of human attachment. From the moment of birth the infant is reaching out for human attachment. Human attachment is much more than meeting the physical needs of the infant. It is about human bonding feeling one with another. Depraving anyone of human attachment, especially from infancy throughout the years of early childhood can have devastating lifelong harmful effects and even be lethal - not only to the individual, but even to society.

Rene Spitz found this to be true …. in his research study in the late 1940s  on orphaned infants after World War 2. These infants were kept in a hospital where all their physical needs were met. They were bath, fed and diapers changed, however, the time in between - these infants were left alone in their cribs. What Spitz reported was that it was the lack of love - that led to 1/3 of the children dying before the age one.

These infants did not have the individual continual attention and care of a regular adult caregiver, who would empathically interact and attune to the infant’s emotional states. What was missing was an adult caregiver who would be able to know when the infant is in distress and needed to be soothe - to be held and even rocking the infant. This interaction is reassuring to the infant of being safe and much more. Equally crucial is attuning to the infant’s pleasurable states responding at the appropriate level of the infant. This constant adult caregiver attuning and interacting with the infant is life sustaining for the child it — fosters the development of empathy. To experience that your emotional states are being identified, are understood and accepted is the foundation of empathy, because the infant will mirror this same empathic caring behavior as the infant matures - to others.

Rene Spitz found the devastating harmful effects and even lethal that can be caused to the child by the absence of a regular consistent empathic adult caregiver. Spitz’s research helps us to begin to understand how fragile a child’s mind is, how all dependent a child is on an empathic caring adult for life survival and how the absence of regular consistent empathic adult caregiver can be traumatizing to the child.

For a child in early childhood experiencing even the threat of parental abandonment can be traumatizing to the child - having lifelong lasting harmful effects effecting all the child’s future relationships. The ongoing constant sustaining need for human attachment - human empathy beginning at birth is severed. This empathic break is experienced by the child as a fate worst than death, an overwhelming feeling that is felt as never ending.

In brief, this helps us to begin to understand what happens to a gay child of 4 or 5 years of age, who begins to express a childlike affection for the same sex parent or caregiver or relative and is in some away shunned or teased - made to feel that his natural feeling to reach out an express his love is rejected. The gay child is made to feel bad, not wanted - this is an empathic break that is likely to be traumatizing to the child - a fate worst than death that feels as never ending. The gay child would not receive any adult empathic caring to be help soothe his type of distress. The child is isolated in his traumatized state. The child will make every effort never again to reach out to connect to someone, again. The child never wants to feel that isolated traumatizing feeling again and because feeling is so overwhelming that it will be dissociated from the child’s memory. The child will no longer trust his natural and only expression of love. And thus ends the child’s continuing development of empathy. His psychological development will be stalled, because the child will not act on his own initiative again and only follow whatever pleases his parents.

Here begins the internalized homophobia in the gay child - lifelong harmful effects. Depending on the degree of severity of the homophobia tactics that a gay child is exposed to - will be shown by that gay child as adult in his inability to form relationships, and in expressing empathy or rather the absence of empathy. Including, re-enacting the same homophobic violence as an adult that he experienced as a child and had forgotten - by attacking others in the same way he was attacked as child without any empathy. It is similar to psychopathic (sociopathic) like behavior, unconcerned of how mean and cruel the person is to another human being - “to be as mean as you can be” i.e. “a cold-blooded killer of the good name of our colleagues and confrères. It is the disease of cowardly persons who lack the courage to speak out directly, but instead speak behind other people’s backs…indifference to others (https://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/speeches/2014/december/documents/papa-francesco_20141222_curia-romana.html)” Their behavior was psychopathic (sociopathic) like - a disregard for the rights of others - harming people even inflicting violence on another all - without any feeling of remorse or guilt (https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/wicked-deeds/201401/how-tell-sociopath-psychopath).

While assessing the striking contrast between empathic respect for gay people as shown by Pope Francis and Dutch men holding hands to show solidarity against homophobia and the absence of empathy for gay people displayed by the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy the blatant disregard for the science on homosexuality and falsely equating them to murders and pedophiles - it was surprising to observe the matching similarities exposed by the antigay screaming hysterics in the US attacking Fr. James Martin and the CUA acquiescence to their irrational emotional antigay demand.

In trying to make sense how did this all happened - the pieces started to fall slowly into place. The men who were born and raised in social environments, like Argentina and the Netherlands where gay people were not discriminated against, but were naturally incorporated into all aspects of society - these men were able to expressed empathy for gay people and lived productive lives - free from any crippling antigay obsession.

However, the men who were born raised in severe antigay social environments like Europe (Hitler) and the United States (McCarthy) where gay people were demonized - these men were unable to show empathy for gay people. The majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy were not only unable to express empathy for gay people, but also to their co-workers. Those members involved in their closeted gay sexual acting out escapades - engaged in anonymous sex with male prostitutes seeming to have to be intoxicated in order to get close to someone to have sex. These men were consumed with and controlled by their internalized homophobia. They were unable to get close to anyone whether at work inside the curia or in their gay sexual escapades nor to feel any motivating empathy to help the people suffering in world - the people they were ordained to serve. Pope Francis described them as being unproductive, involved in constant conflicts always vying for higher positions and consumed with deadly gossip (December 22, 2014). Their lives were separated and isolated from people.

The surprising observation of the CUA antigay screaming hysterics in the US attacking Fr. James Martin mirrored the same curia and hierarchy antigay hysterical behavior (not true of all members of the curia and hierarchy) - they were consumed with the same intense antigay obsession spending their lives attacking the people in the Church supportive of gay people. It was startling that empathy was nonexistent among these antigay groups - "man inhumanity to man." This absence of empathy among these groups - is identical to Hitler and the Nazi regime and US SenatorJoseph McCarthy. It was empathy for the 49 young gay people killed in the Orlando shooting June 2016 and for all LGBT people - that triggered Fr. James Martin into action to stand up for gay people.

I called for Christians to love gay people. Now the Catholic alt-right is taking revenge.- By James Martin
September 21, 2017
After a gunman killed 49 people at Pulse, a predominantly gay nightclub in Orlando in 2016, I found myself disappointed that more Catholic leaders did not offer support to the LGBT community. And that the few who did found it difficult to acknowledge that LGBT people specifically had been targeted for murder.
For me, that silence highlighted a certain failure to be compassionate to the LGBT community even in a moment of tragedy. It also revealed that the LGBT community was still largely invisible to some church authorities. In response, I recorded a brief video that was posted on Facebook. It offered some support for the LGBT community during a terribly difficult few weeks.
Not long afterwards, New Ways Ministry, an organization that ministers to and advocates for LGBT Catholics, invited me to accept their Bridge Building Award. Until then, I had never done what you might call formal ministry with LGBT Catholics, besides the counseling that almost every church worker does in his or her ministry. But the Catholic Church’s response to the events in Orlando encouraged me to do so in a more public way. So, with my Jesuit superiors’ permission, I accepted the award and offered a lecture on how to build a “two-way bridge” between LGBT Catholics and the institutional church — that is, the church’s hierarchy and decision-makers. From that talk came the first half of my book, “Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.”
Now, in the past few weeks, three lectures I was invited to have been canceled, and I have been targeted by some far-right groups whose actions betray a level of homophobia that is hard to fathom. These groups, a kind of Catholic alt-right, are increasingly attempting to substitute themselves for legitimate Church authority by passing judgments on which Catholics are orthodox and which are not. “Heresy” is a word they use as frequently as “and” and “the.”
…My reflections, which can be summarized as a call for respect on both sides, were based on the gospel, and on the Catechism’s call for the Church to treat “homosexual persons” with “respect, compassion and sensitivity.” As with all my books, I sought the formal ecclesial approval of my Jesuit superiors, who vetted my what would become “Building a Bridge.” Perhaps to the disappointment of some critics, it is about dialogue and prayer, not about sexual morality or the sexual practices of LGBT people…
The vast majority of people have responded positively, both in person and online…
But the backlash from the far right is more intense than anticipated. I’ve been accused of heresy, ridiculously, by some critics (I’m not contradicting any revealed truths); there have been over-the-top condemnations (I should be removed from the priesthood) and name-calling that I thought was confined to 1950s playgrounds (faggot, fairy, pansy and worse.)…

But it was the CUA acquiescence to these antigay screaming hysterics giving in to their irrational emotional antigay, their un-empathic demand that was confusing and difficult to understand. Why - how could an academic institution give into the unsubstantiated antigay screaming hysterics demands that was solely built on emotionalism with not a shred of supporting rational evidence. Then after spending a considerable time in prayer the final pieces came together.

The antigay screaming hysterics of CUA were similar to Cardinal Burke’s antigay screaming hysteria - and when you first hear these screaming antigay hysterics they are paralyzing, because what we are hearing - are the re-enactments of a traumatized child in early childhood - of a terrorized child - being abandoned by his parents, a fate worst then death. We are hearing the built alarm of child designed to catch the attention of an adult to rush to the aid of a child in extreme distress. Moms and adult caregivers of infants can tell the difference the in tones of the cries that the infants makes. This cry is an alarm and mothers instantly run to the child to see what wrong. That is one part of what happens to the person who hears this hysterical cry. But hearing an adult scream this alarm cry that is antigay we learn the about the kind of distress this hysteric experienced as a child. It is the cry of being abandoned for an expression that was perceived by the adult caregiver as being gay and was withdrawing the empathic caring for the child.

And why the men at CUA gave into the antigay screaming hysterics demands was because the antigay screaming hysterics triggered the internalized homophobia in the men at CUA that is why they acquiesced so quickly to their demands. If these men at CUA were not triggered by these antigay screaming hysterics they would not have cancelled Fr. James Martin. They would have questioned the reasoning  behind such fierce antigay hysterics and tried to seek some kind of understanding. They would not have felt threaten enough to have canceled Fr. Martin. They would have thought through that whatever, protests these screaming antigay hysterics had threatened to do - it would be publicly more embarrassing for them. This is because the news media would also be questioning their rationale and it would ultimately expose their complete absence of any substantiated reasoning thus rendering their antigay protest as being no more than a collective emotional tantrum. Because, in the absence of truth obtained through the dialogue between science and religion on the subject of sexual orientation of homosexual they have not got a leg to stand on. In addition, they would further be publicly exposed, as hateful people, because without truth, according to Pope Benedict XVI, there is no love, all they are left with is a hand full of hateful sentimentality and unconstrained emotionalism.

Caritas in veritate - Pope Benedict XVI - 2009

These words of Pope Benedict's is what eradicates - our internalized homophobia and I found that it helps to restore empathy that allows us to connect meaningfully to others freeing us from the isolation of unnecessary self-hatred and unwarranted guilt.

The same antigay booga booga hysteric tactic (the boogieman) was used on Pope Francis to try to scare the bejesus out him. This was done shortly after being elected to the papacy, as he started his reforming of the curia, beginning with the bank IOR. And what did Pope Francis do? He kept the gay priest that he had appointed to the Vatican bank - that these antigay people tried to get fired and to publicly embarrass Pope Francis. The way that Pope Francis handled this deceptive situation became a global monumental expression of empathy.  And who ended up with egg on the face? Not Pope Francis - because his answer was to these antigay people was stated almost playfully  “Who I am to judge?” It is important to remember that it was an off-the-cuff remark Pope Francis made in answer to a news reporter's question. Notice there was no apprehension on Pope Francis's part in quickly giving this answer. He didn't express that he was the least bit worried about making this public statement. If Pope Francis was filled with internalized homophobia - he would of reacted, I am sorry, like the men of the CUA did, and like many of the members of the curia and hierarchy reacted. The fact is Pope Francis suffers from no amount of internalized homophobia. Why this is the case is because Pope Francis was born and raised in Argentina - where there are no societal antigay prejudices to be traumatizing to a child in early childhood years and then to be internalized. He even seemed to be taken back somewhat by all the fuss that followed in the wake of his statement. Having been a nightclub bouncer, he seemed to handled this whole concocted antigay scheme in the same way. As far as he seemed concerned this was a trivia situation - in comparison to getting IOR functioning again to serve the poor.

This is a contrasting view of how someone who doesn't suffer from any internalized homophobia handles homophobic situations.

Internalized homophobia is no laughing matter - it has led to the ever increasing violence in the world. This is because the severity of the societal antigay prejudices of a social environment - becomes internalized and destructive to a child during the child's early childhood psychological developmental years causing significant harm to the child's development of empathy. It is then consciously forgotten, but the traumatic harm caused to the child and the lack of empathy is being continuously re-enacted in the child's adult life onto others.

The lifelong cost of burying our traumatic experiences
The trauma caused by childhood neglect, sexual or domestic abuse and war wreaks havoc in our bodies, says
Bessel van der Kolk in The Body Keeps the Score

Brain, Mind, and Body in The Healing of Trauma with Bessel van der Kolk MD
…my group and I did the very first neuroimaging study on people having flashbacks. That turned out to be a very interesting study. We discovered that when people relive their trauma, a fair amount of their brain actually goes offline, particularly in the left anterior prefrontal cortex where the capacity for analyzing, understanding, and language is located. So, essentially we were able to visualize how people become dumbfounded...
...and struck with speechless terror. That is a very big issue. The other thing we discovered or confirmed was that when people relive their trauma, their survival brain, their emotional brain, becomes very activated, and their frontal lobes, their more rational brain, gets deactivated, so that people sort of “take leave of their senses” in some ways—so that people’s cognitions fail them. We learned that the insula, the part of the brain that’s involved in registering and noting what is going on in your body, becomes impaired, so there’s a decreased body–mind connection that needs to be reactivated. Various people have discovered that the medial prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain that allows you to feel yourself, notice yourself and be in touch with yourself—gets quite thrown off track, basically, so that it is really hard to notice what goes on inside of you and to manage what goes on inside of you…

Bessel van der Kolk, MD is a world renowned researcher and clinician in the field of traumatic stress. His innovative work to integrate mind, brain, body, and social connections in the healing of trauma has had a profound impact on the care and treatment of trauma victims all over the world. Dr. van der Kolk’s research includes brain imaging studies on trauma’s impact on childhood developmentDr. van der Kolk, a professor in the department of psychiatry at Boston University Medical School, is the founder and medical director of the Trauma Center in Boston and the director of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), established by Congress to raise the standard of care and improve access to services for traumatized children, their families and communities. Dr. van der Kolk’s newest book, The Body Keeps The Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma (Viking, 2014)—a New York Times Best Seller—offers a sweeping and revolutionary new understanding of the causes and consequences of trauma and how to heal the traumatized brain…

I am a gay priest born and raised in the good old USA. And can still suffer from the effects of internalized homophobia. When I, first, heard Cardinal Raymond Burke spout out his fierce antigay rhetoric - I have to admit it stunned me. I could feel all the shame and guilt of the internalized homophobia come flooding up. However, after about 20 minutes hearing Burke - I started to rationally challenge everything Burke stated. I realized the Burke was all emotions and no facts or reasoning to support his hysteria. I then was able to restored by my equilibrium based on the dialogue between science and religion. I also know from biopsychology and neuropsychology  that being traumatized the reaction is all emotional because the part of the brain the thinks rationally is shutdown. Hearing Burke re-enact his early childhood antigay terror that strangely sound almost the same as the late 1940s & 1950s Joseph McCarthy’s hysterical antigay witch-hunts for homosexuals - I knew that the neurochemicals in the brain (depending on the trauma) - takes about 20 minutes readjust to get you back on line again, though this is not true for everyone.

Straight men go on hand holding rampage after homophobic attack in the Netherlands - April 7 2017 http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/love-sex/91323243/straight-men-go-on-hand-holding-rampage-after-homophobic-attack-in-the-netherlands

Internalized homophobia was controlling the men at the CUA to cancel Fr. Martin. Besides, Pope Francis not being controlled by internalized homophobia neither were the men of the Netherlands including politicians, doctors, priests, business men, factory workers, and on and on who were holding hands in public to express solidarity against a violent homophobic attack of a gay couple for holding hands in public. Can you imagine the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy holding hands to protest the violence of homophobic attacks against gay couples globally?

The Vatican teachings on homosexuality need to be reevaluated to check for arbitrary added additions that may have been added out of internalized homophobia and are re-enactments of someone’s early childhood antigay trauma.

Studies of Maternal Deprivation
Spitz (1945) and Spitz & Wolf (1946) studied institutionalised children in orphanages and hospitals. The institutions were poor quality and staff rarely interacted with the children. The found that a third of institutionalised children died before the age of 1 year. The remainder failed to thrive and showed signs of ‘anaclitic depression’: apathy, withdrawal, and helplessness. These symptoms reversed if the period of maternal deprivation was less than three months but not if it was longer. Spitz compared children living in an orphanage with others living in a penal institution where they were cared for by their mothers. Although physical conditions in the orphanage were better, the children were ‘developmentally inferior’. Within two years 37% of the orphanage children were dead whereas 5 years later all the ‘prison’ children were still alive.

Infants in institutions suffered from lack of love
Rene Spitz
4/20/2010
Austrian psychoanalyst and physician Rene Spitz…thought that infants in institutions suffered from lack of love–that they were missing important parental relationships, which in turn was hurting or even killing them.
To test his theory, he compared a group of infants raised in isolated hospital cribs with those raised in a prison by their own incarcerated mothers. If the germs from being locked up with lots of people were the problem, both groups of infants should have done equally poorly. In fact, the hospitalized kids should have done better, given the attempts made at imposing sterile conditions. If love mattered, however, the prisoners’ kids should prevail.
Love won: 37% of the infants kept in the bleak hospital ward died, but there were no deaths at all amongst the infants raised in the prison. The incarcerated babies grew more quickly, were larger and did better in every way Spitz could measure. The orphans who managed to survive the hospital, in contrast, were more likely to contract all types of illnesses. They were scrawny and showed obvious psychological, cognitive and behavioral problems.
Spitz’s study suggested severe mortality risk–more than one in three died–for institutionalized infants. It showed that serious mental health and behavioral problems could result from not having at least one loving parent devoted to a particular child. For decades, however, this research was either ignored or dismissed by behaviorists and others who couldn’t believe that something as vague and seemingly immeasurable as parental love could matter that much…

Pope Francis reboots the John Paul II institute on marriage and family
September 19, 2017
ROME - Pope Francis on Tuesday decided to upgrade an institute for studies on marriage and family named for St. John Paul II and established by the Polish pope in 1981, replacing it with a pontifical theological institute designed to explore the “lights and shadows” of family life with “realism” and “love,” while also staying faithful to the Church’s teaching.
With a legal document known as a motu proprio published on Tuesday, the Vatican announced that the John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family will now be replaced by the John Paul II Pontifical Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences…
…Another two-fold synod of bishops on the family in Oct. 2014 and Oct. 2015, together with the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, Francis wrote in the motu proprio presented on Tuesday, has led the Church to a “renewed awareness of the family gospel and the new pastoral challenges to which the Christian community is called upon to respond.”
Contemporary anthropological and cultural changes, the pope writes, require “a diversified and analytical approach” which cannot be “limited to pastoral and missionary practices” of the past.
Instead of being limited to practices of the past, Francis wrote, the Church must be able to interpret the faith in a context in which individuals have less support from social structures, their relationships, and their families…
The institute, which comes into effect immediately, will offer students courses leading to a diploma, a license and a doctorate in marriage and family sciences

Peace, conflict, and violence: Peace psychology in the 21st century
Direct violence is horrific, but its brutality usually gets our attention: we notice it, and often respond to it. Structural violence, however, is almost always invisible, embedded in ubiquitous social structures, normalized by stable institutions and regular experience. Structural violence occurs whenever people are disadvantaged by political, legal, economic, or cultural traditions. Because they are longstanding, structural inequities usually seem ordinary—the way things are and always have been. But structural violence produces suffering and death as often as direct violence does, though the damage is slower, more subtle, more common, and more difficult to repair. The chapters in this section teach us about some important but invisible forms of structural violence, and alert us to the powerful cultural mechanisms that create and maintain them over generations.
Johan Galtung originally framed the term “structural violence” to mean any constraint on human potential caused by economic and political structures (1969). Unequal access to resources, to political power, to education, to health care, or to legal standing, are forms of structural violence. When inner-city children have inadequate schools while others do not, when gays and lesbians are fired for their sexual orientation, when laborers toil in inhumane conditions, when people of color endure environmental toxins in their neighborhoods, structural violence exists. Unfortunately, even those who are victims of structural violence often do not see the systematic ways in which their plight is choreographed by unequal and unfair distribution of society’s resources. Such is the insidiousness of structural violence…
Recognizing the operation of structural violence forces us to ask questions about how and why we tolerate it, questions that often have painful answers. The first chapter in this section, “Social Injustice,” by Susan Opotow, argues that our normal perceptual/cognitive processes lead us to care about people inside our scope of justice, but rarely care about those people outside. Injustice that would be instantaneously confronted if it occurred to someone we love or know is barely noticed if it occurs to strangers or those who are invisible or irrelevant to us. We do not seem to be able to open our minds and our hearts to everyone; moral exclusion is a product of our normal cognitive processes. But Opotow argues convincingly that we can reduce its nefarious effects by becoming aware of our distorted perceptions. Inclusionary thinking can be fostered by relationships, communication, and appreciation of diversity.
One outcome of exclusionary thinking is the belief that victims of violence must in some way deserve their plight. But certainly it is easy to see that young children do not deserve to be victims…

The Closet: Psychological Issues of Being In and Coming Out
Jack Drescher MD - 2004
…In the developmental histories of gay men and women, periods of difficulty in acknowledging their homosexuality, either to themselves or to others, are often reported. Children who grow up to be gay rarely receive family support in dealing with antihomosexual prejudices. On the contrary, beginning in childhood--and distinguishing them from racial and ethnic minorities--gay people are often subjected to the antihomosexual attitudes of their own families and communities (Drescher et al., 2004). Antihomosexual attitudes include homophobia (Weinberg, 1972), heterosexism (Herek, 1984), moral condemnations of homosexuality (Drescher, 1998) and antigay violence (Herek and Berrill, 1992). Hiding activities learned in childhood often persist into young adulthood, middle age and even senescence, leading many gay people to conceal important aspects of themselves.
Closeted individuals frequently cannot acknowledge to themselves, let alone to others, their homoerotic feelings, attractions and fantasies. Their homosexuality is so unacceptable that it must be kept out of conscious awareness and cannot be integrated into their public persona. Consequently, these feelings must be d i s s o c i a t e d  from the self and  h i d d e n  from others
…For example, a religious, homosexually self-aware man may choose a celibate life to avoid what, for him, would be the problematic integration of his religious and sexual identities…
…Clinical presentations of closeted gay people may lie somewhere in severity between selective inattention--most commonly seen in the case of homosexually self-aware patients thinking about "the possibility" that they might be gay--to more severe dissociation--in which any hint of same-sex feelings resides totally out of conscious awareness. More severe forms of dissociation are commonly observed in married men who are homosexually self-aware but cannot permit the thought of themselves as gay (Roughton, 2002)…
…Strong antihomosexual feelings may represent an effort to control perceptions of a gay-basher's own sexual identity. This might translate as, "If I attack gay people, no one will think I am gay." Psychoanalysts call this defense "identification with the aggressor" (Freud, 1966). It may represent intrapsychic efforts to maintain a psychological distance from one's own homoerotic feelings. In other words, it is an effort to strengthen dissociative tendencies…
Internalized, antihomosexual attitudes are often rigid and disdainful of compromise or "relativism." A patient's dogmatic belief system may not recognize the concept of respectful disagreement…

PrejudiceSocial Stress, and Mental Health in Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Populations: Conceptual Issues and Research Evidence
Psychol Bull. 2003 September ; 129(5): 674–697.

Repression
The most basic defense mechanism, because it is involved in each of the others, is repression. Whenever the ego is threatened by undesirable id impulses, it protects it- self by repressing those impulses; that is, it forces threatening feelings into the un- conscious (Freud, 1926/1959a). In many cases the repression is then perpetuated for a lifetime. For example, a young girl may permanently repress her hostility for a younger sister because her hateful feelings create too much anxiety.
No society permits a complete and uninhibited expression of sex and aggression. When children have their hostile or sexual behaviors punished or otherwise suppressed, they learn to be anxious whenever they experience these impulses. Al- though this anxiety seldom leads to a complete repression of aggressive and sexual drives, it often results in their partial repression.
What happens to these impulses after they have become unconscious? Freud (1933/1964) believed that several possibilities exist. First, the impulses may remain unchanged in the unconscious. Second, they could force their way into consciousness in an unaltered form, in which case they would create more anxiety than the person could handle, and the person would be overwhelmed with anxiety. A third and much more common fate of repressed drives is that they are expressed in displaced or disguised forms. The disguise, of course, must be clever enough to deceive the ego. Repressed drives may be disguised as physical symptoms, for example, sexual impotency in a man troubled by sexual guilt. The impotency prevents the man from having to deal with the guilt and anxiety that would result from normal enjoyable sexual activity. Repressed drives may also find an outlet in dreams, slips of the tongue, or one of the other defense mechanisms.

Part II -  Psychodynamic Theories
Projection
When an internal impulse provokes too much anxiety, the ego may reduce that anxiety by attributing the unwanted impulse to an external object, usually another person.  This is the defense mechanism of projection, which can be defined as seeing in others unacceptable feelings or tendencies that actually reside in one’s own unconscious (Freud, 1915/1957b). For example, a man may consistently interpret the actions of older women as attempted seductions. Consciously, the thought of sexual intercourse with older women may be intensely repugnant to him, but buried in his unconscious is a strong erotic attraction to these women. In this example, the young man deludes himself into believing that he has no sexual feelings for older women. Although this projection erases most of his anxiety and guilt, it permits him to maintain a sexual interest in women who remind him of his mother.
An extreme type of projection is paranoia, a mental disorder characterized by powerful delusions of jealousy and persecution. Paranoia is not an inevitable outcome of projection but simply a severe variety of it. According to Freud (1922/1955), a crucial distinction between projection and paranoia is that paranoia is always characterized by repressed homosexual feelings toward the persecutor. Freud believed that the persecutor is inevitably a former friend of the same sex [or a brother], although sometimes people may transfer their delusions onto a person of the opposite sex. When homosexual impulses become too powerful, persecuted paranoiacs defend themselves by reversing these feelings and then projecting them onto their original object [the former friend of the same sex (or brother)]. For men, the transformation proceeds as follows. Instead of saying, “I love him,” the paranoid person says, “I hate him.” Because this also produces too much anxiety, he says, “He hates me.” At this point, the person has disclaimed all responsibility and can say, “I like him fine, but he’s got it in for me.” The central mechanism in all paranoia is projection with accompanying delusions of jealousy and persecution

Freudian Defense Mechanisms and Empirical Findings in Modern Social Psychology: Reaction Formation, Projection, Displacement, Undoing, Isolation, Sublimation, and Denial

Projection
Concept. Projection is a popular concept in everyday discourse as well as in psychological thought. In its simplest form, it refers to seeing one’s own traits in other people. A more rigorous understanding involves perceiving others as having traits that one inaccurately believes oneself not to have. As a broad form of influence of self-concept on person perception, projection may be regarded as more a cognitive bias than a defense mechanism. Nonetheless, projection can be seen as defensive if perceiving the threatening trait in others helps the individual in some way to avoid recognizing it in himself or herself, and indeed this is how Freud (e.g., 1915/1961a) conceptualized projection. Thus, there are multiple ways of understanding projection, and they vary mainly along the dimension of how effectively the undesirable trait or motive is repudiated as part of the self.
Evidence. The simpler, more loosely defined version of projection is fairly well documented. The false consensus effect, first described by Ross, Greene, and House (1977), is probably the best-known form of this, insofar as it is a broad tendency to assume that others are similar to oneself. The false consensus effect is defined as overestimating the percentage of other people who share one’s traits, opinions, preferences, or motivations…

Reaction Formation - Homophobic men
Concept. The concept of reaction formation involves converting a socially unacceptable impulse into its opposite. To apply this notion to esteem protection, one may propose the following: People respond to the implication that they have some unacceptable trait by behaving in a way that would show them to have the opposite trait. Insinuations of hostility or intolerance might, for example, be countered with exaggerated efforts to prove oneself a peace-loving or tolerant person.
Evidence. The original ideas about reaction formation pertained to aggressive and sexual impulses, and these are still plausible places for finding defenses, provided that acknowledging those impulses or feelings would damage self-esteem. With sex, there are undoubtedly still cases in which people regard their own potential sexual responses as unacceptable…
A comparable finding with male subjects was recently reported by Adams, Wright, and Lohr (1996). They assessed homophobia and then exposed participants to videotapes depicting homosexual intercourse. Homophobic men reported low levels of sexual arousal, but physiological measures indicated higher levels of sexual response than were found among other participants. Thus, again, the subjective response reported by these participants was the opposite of what their bodies actually indicated. This finding also fits the view that homophobia may itself be a reaction formation against homosexual tendencies, insofar as the men who were most aroused by homosexuality were the ones who expressed the most negative attitudes toward it…

Parental Autonomy Support and Discrepancies Between Implicit and Explicit Sexual Identities: Dynamics of Self-Acceptance and Defense - 2012
When individuals grow up with autonomy-thwarting parents, they may be prevented from exploring internally endorsed values and identities and as a result shut out aspects of the self perceived to be unacceptable. Given the stigmatization of homosexuality, individuals perceiving low autonomy support from parents may be especially motivated to conceal same-sex sexual attraction, leading to defensive processes such as reaction formation…
…Psychodynamic traditions hold that people have a preferred view of themselves, which may not reflect reality. When this idealized view is threatened by contradictory thoughts or feelings, people engage in one or more unconscious processes to defend against the threat to self. Among defensive processes that have been recognized as having some empirical support is reaction formation, a process indicated in the modern body of research on self-esteem preservation (e.g., Baumeister, Dale, & Sommer, 1998). Reaction formation refers to the process of adopting values or beliefs, or engaging in behaviors, that are in opposition to feelings or impulses experienced within oneself that are deemed unacceptable. Empirical work has shown reaction formation processes with respect to sexism (Sherman & Garkin, 1980), sex guilt (Morokoff, 1985), and prejudice (Dutton & Lake, 1973), indicating that individuals sometimes defend against self-relevant, threatening information by engaging in opposing behaviors… Read more: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Cody_DeHaan/publication/221790068_Parental_Autonomy_Support_and_Discrepancies_Between_Implicit_and_Explicit_Sexual_Identities_Dynamics_of_Self-Acceptance_and_Defense/links/0f31752d7447a6e150000000.pdf?

The Compulsion to Repeat the Trauma
Re-enactment, Revictimization, and Masochism
Bessel A. van der Kolk, MD
During the formative years of contemporary psychiatry much attention was paid to the continuing role of past traumatic experiences on the current lives of people. Charcot, Janet, and Freud all noted that fragmented memories of traumatic events dominated the mental life of many of their patient…Janet thought that traumatic memories of traumatic events persist as unassimilated fixed ideas that act as foci for the development of alternate states of consciousness, including dissociative phenomena, such as fugue states, amnesias, and chronic states of helplessness and depression. Unbidden memories of the trauma may return as physical sensations, horrific images or nightmares, behavioral reenactments, or a combination of these. Janet showed how traumatized individuals become fixated on the trauma: difficulties in assimilating subsequent experiences as well. It is "as if their personality development has stopped at a certain point and cannot expand anymore by the addition or assimilation of new elements." Freud independently came to similar conclusions. Initially, he thought all hysterical symptoms were caused by childhood sexual "seduction" of which unconscious memories were activated, when during adolescence, a person was exposed to situations reminiscent of the original trauma. The trauma permanently disturbed the capacity to deal with other challenges, and the victim who did not integrate the trauma was doomed to "repeat the repressed material as a contemporary experience in instead or . . . remembering it as something belonging to the past.” In this article, I will show how the trauma is repeated on behavioral, emotional, physiologic, and neuroendocrinologic levels, whose confluence explains the diversity of repetition phenomena.
Many traumatized people expose themselves, seemingly compulsively, to situations reminiscent of the original trauma. These behavioral reenactments are rarely consciously understood to be related to earlier life experiences…

FOR YOUR OWN GOOD
Hidden cruelty in child-rearing and the roots of violence (1980)
By Alice Miller
...In the earliest stage of life, it is possible for a child to forget about the extreme acts of cruelty he or she has endured and to idealize their perpetrator.

Childhood Trauma, the Neurobiology of Adaptation, and "Use-dependent" Development of the Brain:
How "States" Become “Traits"
Infant Mental Health Journal, Vol. 16, No. 4, Winter 1995
Adults interpret the actions, words, and expressions of children through the distorting fitter of their own beliefs. In the lives of most infants and children, these common adult misinterpretations are relatively benign. In many cases, however, these misinterpretations can be destructive. The most dramatic example occurs when the impact of traumatic events on infants and young children is minimized. It is an ultimate irony that at the time when the human is most vulnerable to the effects of trauma— during infancy and childhood— adults generally presume the most resilience...
Deprivation of critical experiences during development may be the most destructive yet least understood area of child maltreatment. Unlike broken bones, irreversible maldevelopment of brain areas mediating EMPATHY resulting from emotional neglect in infancy and childhood is not readily observable...
...Some of the most powerful clinical examples of this phenomenon are related to lack of attachment experiences early in life. The child who has been emotionally neglected early in life will exhibit profound attachment problems which are extremely insensitive to any replacement experiences later, including therapy. Examples of this include feral children, children in orphanages observed by Spitz and Wolf (1945) and, often, the remorseless, violent child...
…Profound sociocultural and public policy implications arise from understanding the critical role of early experience in determining the functional capacity of the mature adult — and therefore our society. Persistence of the destructive myth that "children are resilient" will prevent millions of children, and our society, from meeting their true potential. Persistence of the pervasive maltreatment of children in the face of decreasing global and national resources will lead, inevitably, to sociocultural devolution.
It need not be so.

Science  +

 + Religion = Truth = L O V E

On Gay Priests “Who am I to Judge?”
July 29, 2013
Pope Francis

We have to find a new balance; otherwise
even the moral edifice of the church is likely to
FALL LIKE A HOUSE OF CARDS,
losing the freshness and fragrance
of the Gospel.
Pope Francis

SCIENCE can purify religion from error and superstition;
RELIGION can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.
Each can draw the other into a wider world,
a world in which both can flourish.
For the truth of the matter is that the Church and the scientific community will inevitably interact; their options
DO NOT include ISOLATION.
Pope John Paul II - 1988

…TRUTH is the light that gives meaning and value to CHARITY. That light is both the light of REASON and the light of FAITH, through which the intellect attains to the natural and supernatural truth of charity: it grasps its meaning as GIFT, acceptance, and communion. WITHOUT truth, charity degenerates into SENTIMENTALITY. Love becomes an EMPTY SHELL, to be filled in an ARBITRARY way. In a CULTURE without truth, this is the FATAL risk facing love. It FALLS prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word “love” is abused and distorted,to the point where it comes to MEAN the opposite.
REASON always stands in need of being purified by faith: this also holds true for political reason, which must not consider itself OMNIPOTENT. For its part, RELIGION always needs to be purified by reason in order to show its authentically human face. Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development
Pope Benedict XVI 2007 2009

And from our diligent research and study in this matter we will learn the reality about sexual orientation whether it is gay, straight or bisexual - it cannot be permanently suppressed or changed. It is forever continuously functioning autonomically - like our hearts beating or our breathing - it is operates automatically, not under our conscious control regulating our bodily functions - sustaining our lives. In brief, sexual orientation is all about our most basic human emotional need that we cannot live without - love and human attachment. Attractions and the need for love, are forever operative - out of our conscious control and no matter how hard we try to suppress our sexual orientation - it cannot be done.

A child of 4 and 5 years of age, has no concept of the adult understanding what “gay” or homosexuality means, much less adult sexual behavior. The central core functioning of sexual orientation, whether gay or straight or bisexual, which is set very early in life, either just before birth or very soon afterwards - and from birth to death - it is all about needing to be loved, needing to love another and to feel one with another human being and one with all people.
We will learn from studying the - science on sexual orientation that it is composed of interrelated biological and psychological processes that are not able to be consciously controlled or suppressed. These interrelated processes function outside our conscious awareness - automatically and continuously throughout life as part of the autonomic nervous system - like the heart beating and breathing. The continuous functioning of our sexual orientation - is essential in meeting our most basic human need for love, attachment, intimacy, through which empathy is developed. The continuous functioning of our sexual orientation is as vital to human survival from the beginning of life to the end - as the heart beating and breathing. Any attempt to force the suppression of a child’s gay sexual orientation is the same as suppressing the heart and breathing rate which can cause a number of lifelong adverse effects (i.e. persistent form of depression (dysthymia), suicidal ideation, and obsessive dislike for gay people that is implicit, to explicit verbal expressions of hate, to lethal forms of violence, and torture)

Is Some Homophobia Self-phobia?

Anti-gay Bias Linked to Lack of Awareness of One's Sexual Orientation and Authoritarian Parenting, Study Shows
Homophobia is more pronounced in individuals with an unacknowledged attraction to the same sex and who grew up with authoritarian parents who forbade such desires, a series of psychology studies demonstrates.
The study is the first to document the role that both parenting and sexual orientation play in the formation of intense and visceral fear of homosexuals, including self-reported homophobic attitudes, discriminatory bias, implicit hostility towards gays, and endorsement of anti-gay policies. Conducted by a team from the University of Rochester, the University of Essex, England, and the University of California in Santa Barbara, the research will be published the April issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. (The following is an excerpt of this published research study

(Is Some Homophobia Self-phobia? …continues)
"Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves," explains Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the University of Essex and the study's lead author.
"In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward," adds co-author Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester who helped direct the research…
The findings may help to explain the personal dynamics behind some bullying and hate crimes directed at gays and lesbians, the authors argue. Media coverage of gay-related hate crimes suggests that attackers often perceive some level of threat from homosexuals. People in denial about their sexual orientation may lash out because gay targets threaten and bring this internal conflict to the forefront, the authors write.
The research also sheds light on high profile cases in which anti-gay public figures are caught engaging in same-sex sexual acts. The authors write that this dynamic of inner conflict may be reflected in such examples as Ted Haggard, the evangelical preacher who opposed gay marriage but was exposed in a gay sex scandal in 2006, and Glenn Murphy, Jr., former chairman of the Young Republican National Federation and vocal opponent of gay marriage, who was accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old man in 2007.
"We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat," says Ryan. "Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences," Ryan says, pointing to cases such as the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard or the 2011 shooting of Larry King
Across all the studies, participants with supportive and accepting parents were more in touch with their implicit sexual orientation, while participants from authoritarian homes revealed the most discrepancy between explicit and implicit attraction.
"In a predominately heterosexual society, 'know thyself' can be a challenge for many gay individuals. But in controlling and homophobic homes, embracing a minority sexual orientation can be terrifying," explains Weinstein. These individuals risk losing the love and approval of their parents if they admit to same sex attractions, so many people deny or repress that part of themselves, she said…

It is only the forced suppression of a child’s sexual orientation that will distort the beauty and life-sustaining need for love and human affection - that cause the lifelong harmful effects. These are lifelong harmful effects, and depending on the severity of an authoritarian parental suppression of a child’s gay sexual orientation, range anywhere, varying degrees of intensity, from: depression and anxiety, to suicidal ideation, to problems in forming close, fulling and lifelong relationships, to a marked form of aggressiveness and interpersonal hostility, to violent behavior directed indiscriminately at all gay people (http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=4040). We will end up having the kind of homophobic manure that is overflowing at the Vatican, and of course, this does not include everyone there - most especially not Pope Francis.

A child’s sexual orientation is not about sexual behavior - it is about love, wanting to feel one with another. Depending on the severity of this rejection of a child’s expression of love - the child wants to desperately please his parents and will learn to hid from his parent such emotions of love that are disturbing to them. He will even hide them from himself and thus begins the mental dissociation of this child - attempting to suppress the never ending - regular functioning of his sexual orientation of the emotional impulses - to be loved and to love and to feel one with another. However, as explained above - a person’s sexual orientation like the heart beating, breathing, sexual arousal, etc., are all under the control autonomic nervous system that operates automatically and unconsciously - they cannot be suppressed.

And the constant and continuous functioning of sexual orientation - like the heart and breathing, is vital for sustaining not only our individual lives, but also simultaneously the lives of each other. It is responsible for supplying the necessary memories of the learned developmental skills of love and empathy of human interaction - needed for fostering and maintaining lifelong meaningful and life-giving relationships - essential for sustaining our interconnectedness with each other - collectively meeting our most basic human need that we cannot live without, which is love.

Sexual orientation refers to an enduring pattern of emotional, romantic and/or sexual attractions to men, women or both sexes... http://www.apa.org/topics/lgbt/orientation.aspx

Autonomic nervous system
The autonomic nervous system is a control system that acts largely unconsciously and regulates bodily functions such as the heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, pupillary response, urination, and sexual arousal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomic_nervous_system#cite_note-Human_Physiology_-_Janig-2

A research study 2012, at Cornell University found that measurements of pupil dilation taken while study participants viewed erotic videos of people they found attractive - was a robust indicator of - a person’s sexual orientation and of the activation of the autonomic nervous system. The results of bisexual men was of significant importance in this new study that revealed they had substantial pupil dilations to sexual videos of both men and women.

Autonomic Nervous System

The Eyes Have It: Sex and Sexual Orientation Differences in Pupil Dilation Patterns
August 3. 2012
pupil dilation to stimuli indicates activation of the autonomic nervous system. This system is associated with many automatic processes such as perspiration, digestion, blood pressure, and heart rate. For this reason, pupil dilation has been used as indicator of automatic response, for example, in studies of implicit reaction and cognitive load. Other research suggests that pupil dilation can reflect automatic attention, or attention that is likely not in the conscious control of participants. It is therefore unlikely that participants suppress pupil dilation to stimuli they are sexually attracted to. Pupil dilation patterns could therefore reflect, with high sensitivity, automatic attention related to sexual attraction and sexual orientation

Science  +

July 12, 2017

Bishop David J. Walkowiak
Bishop of the Grand Rapids Diocese
360 Division Avenue S.,
Grand Rapids, MI 49503-4501

Dear Bishop David,

I received your letter dated October 2015, that included a request to set an appointment to dialogue with you. At the time, my commitments, obligations and lack of financial means did not permit me to follow through. Furthermore, the around trip from Canton, MI to Grand Rapids, MI would have been about eight hours. However, after seeking reliable spiritual direction I was advised to write a letter to accept your request to meet. In the process of writing this letter, I began to thoroughly research the situation, from the combined insight obtained from three professionals perspectives, as a priest, as a psychologist, and as a historian. Through these perspectives, I have analyzed the many ways in which I was a victim of antigay hierarchal violence, having no judicial oversight to appeal to for protection within the church or civilly. This is an unidentified form of structural violence directed not at me alone but also many priests, theologians, sisters, religious and others, including Pope Francis for the past four decades - all have been victims of this form of violence.

S t r u c t u r a l   V i o l e n c e
Introduction
by Deborah Du Nann Winter and Dana C. Leighton
Peace, conflict, and violence: Peace psychology in the 21st century
Direct violence is horrific, but its brutality usually gets our attention: we notice it, and often respond to it. Structural violence, however, is almost always invisibleembedded in ubiquitous social structures, normalized by stable institutions and regular experience. The chapters in this section teach us about some important but invisible forms of structural violence, and alert us to the powerful cultural mechanisms that create and maintain them over generations…
One outcome of exclusionary thinking is the belief that victims of violence must in some way deserve their plight. But certainly it is easy to see that young children do not deserve to be victims…
Section II:  Winter, D. D., & Leighton, D. C. (2001). Structural violenceIn D. J. Christie, R. V. Wagner, & D. D. Winter (Eds.), Peace, conflict, and violence: Peace psychology in the 21st centuryNew York: Prentice-Hall.

The main purpose of this form of structural violence is to silence and remove anyone in the Church who openly discusses the science on the sexual orientation of homosexuality - gay people. This antigay hierarchical, structural violence has been successful in firmly suppressing this science on homosexuality for the past 60 years. In 1957, world renowned psychologist, Dr. Evelyn Hooker conducted ground breaking research proving that homosexuality is not a mental illness. She proved that being homosexual was just as normal as being heterosexual. For years the hierarchical church has rebuked such scientifically sound findings and have championed the obsessive suppression of gay people. Such actions lead to question who benefits from falsifying truth? The hierarchical church did not suppress the scientific research on heart surgery or cancer for the past 60 years. This vicious form of gay suppression is entrenched in the corruption of the curia in which speaking the truth has become a reprehensible thing. Through my years of analysis, I have come to find that the greatest harm this suppression imposes is on our children.

Truly I tell you, unless you
change and become like little children,
you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this
child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whoever welcomes one such child in
my name welcomes me.
Matthew 18: 3-5

…whoever causes one of these
little ones
who believe in Me to stumble,
it would be better for him
to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck,
and to be drowned in the
depth of the sea.
Matthew 18:6

My “coming out” in March 1997 was all based on substantiated science and scripture. Furthermore, it was motivated to protect defenseless children. How did risking my life by coming out warrant such extreme vindictive retaliation for the past 20 years by members of the curia and hierarchy?

How did it get twisted around that I refused to return to the Grand Rapids Dioceses, when in fact, it was made clear to me that it was unsafe for me to return by their coercing me to acquiesce to being sent away to be re-educated on the science on the sexual orientation of homosexuality. They wanted me to leave the priesthood on my own, which would be another grave sin to commit. Since I had no recourse to appeal to for justice in 1997 - what recourse would I have available to me if I returned and more severe immoral tactics were used against me?

This tactic of the curia to dispose of someone was most recently demonstrated by Cardinal Raymond Burke firing Boeselager the Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Malta. Burke falsified a papal decision of Pope Francis that no one was to be fired, that the problematic issues with the Knights of Malta should be resolved through dialogue. Burke without any true dialogue with Boeselager stated that it was Pope Francis’s wish that he resign as the Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Malta. When Boeselager refused to resign because of “unreasonable circumstances,” Burke fired him on the grounds of disobedience. Sound familiar?  Boeselager, then appealed directly to Pope Francis and an investigation was ordered into the firing of Boeselager. It was later exposed that the grounds that Burke had used against Boeselager were over “condoms.” However, this information was contrived by a group of Burke’s supporters known as “Lepanto Institute for the Restoration of All Things in Christ.” This group is described as a “militant traditionalist organization close to Burke (Austen Ivereigh).” “This ultraconservative organization specialized in the denunciation of "gays” entering the Church and in attacks on the major development associations that question unfettered economic liberalism (La Croix International).” On February 4, 2017, Pope Francis replaced Cardinal Burke as the Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and overnight all over Rome appeared posters of Pope Francis with a sad expression with the words - “Where is your mercy?”

It was the truth from science and religion that morally obligated me to come out for the protection of children growing up gay in March 1997. This was an act of love and my duty as a priest. It is the true meaning of being a priest. Pope Francis  on Thursday, June 22, 2017  in his homily during Mass at Casa Santa Marta confirmed this fact stating,"The Good Shepherd gives his life for his sheep,” using as an example the parish priest of Barbiana, Fr. Don Milani, the from the Diocese of Firenze (Florence).

The research to find the answers to these questions endlessly kept unfolding more and more information that led back in time - more than a century and a half. The research doors were opened wide once Pope Francis was elected and he along with his team of experts, and cardinals began reforming the curia. The research revealed two main historical events that were dependent on exploiting societal prejudices against gay people to rise and to stay in power. The, first, began with the ideology of Nazism promoted by Hitler and the Nazi regime that led to the deaths of 70 million people unprecedented in human history. The, second, began the with ideology of the “trickle-down theory” known as Reaganomics that led to Globalization and the greatest inequality in human history - “A world where 1% of humanity controls as much wealth as the bottom 99% will never be stable (President Obama’s departing speech to the UN General Assembly September 2016). Ian Kershaw explains what Hitler’s place in history will be:

…Primarily, as the inspiration of the most lethal and destructive war in history, and of the most terrible genocidethe world has ever seen. He left behind him not just physical, but also moral, ruination such as history has never previously experienced. He represented an extreme pathology of modern society. He showed us the most radical face of modern inhumanity – how an advanced society can undergo a breathtaking descent into modern barbarity that’s quite without precedent. That’s what, with the passage of time, we can see was historically defining about Hitler. Never before Hitler’s time had we seen so clearly what human beings are capable of…
…we shouldn’t mystify Hitler’s personality. The uniquenessof Nazism can’t be reduced to that strange personality. Another time, another place, and Hitler would have had no impact at all. He couldn’t have derailed a modern society without that society itself making a major contribution to its own fate… We shouldn’t be complacent about the future. New forms of fascism and racial intolerance rightly appal and worry us…
…what we can do is to remind ourselves of the essential point about Hitler: he represented the most fundamental and frontal assault ever launched on all that we associate with humanity and civilisation.

Lecture - Wednesday 27th April 2005

Over the past year and a half - I have been researching and writing 24/7, since I received your letter - gathering significant amounts of factual data on all three levels (as a priest, psychologist and historian). This research includes my personal experience of being a victim of the hierarchical, antigay violence. As it happens when I do research, such as it did when I was doing the qualitative research on the Holocaust in graduate school for psychology, it is only after thoroughly exhausting every possible avenue several times do all the pieces begin to fall into place like  a jigsaw puzzle that a picture is formed.

The picture centers on the crucial importance for the safety and well-being of all of humanity present and on into the future and is dependent on maintaining an ongoing dialogue between science and religion. This is necessary to obtain truth that which then gives meaning and value to love. Without this truth formed through this process -

…Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way. In a culture without truth, this is the fatal risk facing love. It falls prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word “love” is abused and distorted,to the point where it comes to mean the opposite…
Benedict XVI - Caritas in Veritate 2007  2009

Pope Benedict XVI goes on to make the warning that “Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development…” St. Pope John Paul II made an early statement to this effect explaining how science and religion cannot be separated. He explains - as Benedict does that science is the study of all of God’s creation and religion is formed from the bible, which is the inspired word of God. They both explain how the dialogue between science and religion becomes a self-correcting mechanism of oversight, preventing abuse and maintaining integrity of both science and religion - thus allowing science and religion to guide us on our journey into the future. Both John Paul II and Benedict XVI are writing from their experience having lived through the atrocities of Hitler and the Nazi regime (1933-1945) that resulted from their manipulation and abuse of science and religion to invent a pseudo-science to legitimize Hitler’s ideology of Nazism and pseudo-religious terms to promote it. They experienced living in a social environment saturated in the racial ideology of Nazism - where the meaning of love was so twisted around that in actuality love meant the opposite. Love meant exterminating people considered to be less than human or subhuman - “Life Unworthy Of Life.”

With the recent election of President Trump we are experiencing living in a similar social environment saturated with the ideology of the “trickle-down theory.” This led to Globalization that was also legitimized by the manipulation of science and religion that twisted the meaning of love around to mean the exact opposite. In addition to Mr. Trump’s behavior, the Republican Convention 2016 slogans, “Lock her up!” (that sounded like the palpable hysteria of the Nazi Party “Sieg Heil” chant at a Cathedral lit Nuremberg Rally of the 1930s) and his being elected US president are all blatant examples of love twisted to mean the opposite. Both the rise of Nazism and Globalization were depended on the exploitation of societal prejudices against gay people.

However, in regards to rise of the  “trickle-down theory”of the 1980s that led to Globalization - the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy are responsible for the exploitation of societal prejudices against gay people. The research of Dr. Evelyn Hooker and subsequent research completely dispel prejudices against gay people. Instead of the curia and hierarchy acknowledging the truth of this science - they manipulated religion by misusing the bible and continued to wrongly condemn homosexuality. Thus they twisted the meaning of truth around to the point that it continues to mean the opposite. They and their supporters are not about truth and therefore not about love. They are no different than the palpable hysteria of the Nazi Party “Sieg Heil” members at the Nuremberg Rallies of the 1930s. And this is the violence, their twisted meaning of truth - the complete absence of love, they have used against me and against so many others before and after me. Some of our best and brightest theologians and bridge makers, such as, Sister Jeannine Gramick and Fr. Robert Nugent. Gramick and Nugent have been responsible since 1977 for saving millions of people’s lives, especially very young children. To the best of my knowledge, they were the first to begin an ongoing dialogue on the science of the sexual orientation of homosexuality - gay people and religion - scripture and theology.

S c i e n c e   can purify religion from error and superstition;
R e l i g i o n   can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.
Each can draw the other into a wider world,
a world in which both can flourish.
For the truth of the matter is that the Church and the scientific
community will inevitably interact; their options
do not include isolation.
St. Pope John Paul II - 1988

I came out in March 1997: for the protection of children, as young as 4 and 5 years of age, who are growing up gay. Since then it has become a moral obligation to educate and prevent forced parental suppression and unsubstantiated antigay social and religious norms. What has bothered me ever since was the fact that I found it difficult to find the  r o o t   c a u s e  in understanding “how” and “why” and “when” did the meaning of “love” and “truth” get so monumentally - twisted around; notably among the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy to mean the exact opposite.

For the past 10 years I have been writing in an effort to explain how this mindless inquisition that started almost immediately after coming out in June 1997 - of being coerced “behind closed doors” by a directive from the curia conveyed by the bishop for me to acquiesce to being sent away “somewhere” to be re-educated on the science on the sexual orientation of homosexuality. This directive was not only shocking, but traumatizing as well.

This irrational directive from the curia completely negated the immediate need of protecting the lives of millions of very young defenseless children from lifelong debilitating harmful effects. It also negated the wealth of the authoritative substantiated research gathered from the major medical and mental health associations, institutions, and organizations, including universities. This was the reason for my “coming out.”

Through knowledge acquired during my studies at the University of Michigan and attending the American Psychological AssociationNational Conventions my research was reinforced on the science of sexual orientation. The action of the curia and hierarchy was a blatant affront, a direct attack on truth and love, as taught and embodied in Jesus Christ, of which the entire purpose and meaning of priesthood is based on. It was like a supervisor telling a heart surgeon that he is going to be be sent away on a sabbatical to be reeducated on the ancient system of medicine known as “bloodletting.” I cannot explain how twisted it sounded - to be told such absurdity!!! “Who in the hell is running this ship?!?” I was 47 years old at the time.

How did the curia and hierarchy cause a breach in the dialogue between science and religion that ended up twisting the meaning of love around to mean the opposite?

Any attempt to force the suppression of a child’s gay sexual orientation is the same as suppressing the heart and breathing rate which can cause a number of lifelong adverse effects (persistent form of depression (dysthymia), suicidal ideation, and obsessive dislike for gay people that is implicit, to explicit verbal expressions of hate, to lethal forms of violence, and torture).

The majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy are European. They are the ones who grew up in the toxic antigay social environments left behind by Hitler’s Nazi regime. This begins to explain the long history of the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy’s collective obsessive antigay crusade. This collective thought suppressed all emerging science on homosexuality for the past 60 years. For these members of the curia and hierarchy the thought of gay science has been a long closed door slammed shut in their early childhood years. This was out of great fear from their witnessing the terror in the adult’s warnings of how Hitler treated priests who were found out to be homosexuals. As this trauma of the early childhood events are not remembered, only the emotional terror of the event remains. It is this emotional terror that is wronglymistaken as an innate guiding voice of their conscience strongly conveying to them that homosexuality is evil. This misunderstanding then becomes a force that completely obliterates years of scientific research on homosexuality. It is more likely that such scientific research ignites seemingly unending waves of unexplainable terror. That door slammed tightly shut - is the breach in the dialogue between science and religion on the issue of homosexuality. This is a childhood defense mechanism. It is the only means available to the child to stop the unending waves of fear. However, as adults, these childhood defenses must be reexamined in a safe environment - to be challenged in the adult dialogue between science and religion on issues of homosexuality. As Pope Benedict XVI explains, this is the only process to find truth and give real value and meaning to the understanding of love. I do not presume this to be an easy task to unravel and should only be attempted in a safe environment. However, this situation - is not unusual - it brings to mind the words of St. Paul to be understood with great care and empathy.

When I was a child, I talked like a child,
I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.
When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
1 Corinthians 13:11

No, no, no this type of breach in the dialogue between science and religion on gay sexual orientation has to stop! Justice demands that I be exonerated and proper restitution be made for all harm endured, including the lost salary for the past 20 years to be made quickly. Not to follow through on this road of true justice is to continue this breach in the dialogue between science and religion on gay sexual orientation. Am I, like so many others, going to be made an example of what happens when a priest speaks aloud the truth? Will this be a situation reminiscent of Hitler’s regime to remove and silence Anti-Nazi priests? Are you going demonstrate publicly how an advanced society of people made a major contribution to the modern barbarity of Hitler and the Nazi regime by their complicity and indifference?

My moral obligation as a priest is to protect people, especially children.

I look forward to setting a time to dialogue the reality of this situation in the light of the warnings of both St. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI while maintaining an open discussion between science and religion for the search of truth that leads to love.

Sincerely yours,

Re-education Clinics - of homosexual sexual orientation

QUACKS: 'Conversion Therapists,' the Anti-LGBT Right, and the Demonization of Homosexuality
May 25, 2016
This is a report about junk science and some of the people who propagate it. It is not about silly, perhaps amusing theories about ESP or life on the moon or even purported miracle cures for cancer. The “science” examined here actively harms people, leading with grim regularity to suicidedepression and an array of self-destructive behaviors. It demeans, defames and defrauds human beings, typically at their most vulnerable moments. And, as if that weren’t enough, it regularly lays the blame for the alleged malady of homosexuality at the feet of gay people’s parents, despite the fact that they are wholly innocent.
Executive Summary
Will standing in a circle of naked men deep in the woods turn gay men straight? Is disrobing in front of a mirror alone with your therapist and then touching “your masculinity” a cure for homosexuality? Does beating a pillow representing your mother really help develop “healthy” relationships with other men?
The men and women who people this industry known as “conversion,” “reparative” or “ex-gay” therapists are like modern-day phrenologists, the “experts” beloved by the Nazis who thought they could identify inferior human beings by measuring their subjects’ skulls. They employ theories that have been thoroughly debunked by virtually all relevant medical associations. They cite bizarre studies that were shot down decades ago as key documents. They use techniques that were described in court by one expert as “worse than snake oil.” They are quacks.
Many of them are doubtless sincere. Some describe their own struggles with “unwanted same-sex attractions.” But sincere or not, the promotion of conversion therapy has a cynical side. If being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is merely a chosen behavior, one that can be “fixed” with the right mental health treatment, then criticizing LGBT people for their sexual choices is akin to simply criticizing bad behavior. Unlike attacking someone for their skin color, reparative therapists can condemn the gay “lifestyle” and still claim that they are not LGBT-hating bigots.
The real science is perfectly clear. A consensus of the vast majority of psychiatrists, psychologists and other counselors and their professional organizations agree that homosexuality is a normal variation of human sexuality. Likewise, they condemn reparative therapy and other attempts to change sexual orientation

Lesbian photographer goes undercover inside the Ecuadorian torture clinics that 'treat' homosexuality to capture the horrors inflicted on men and women
30 May 2017
Ecuadorian photographer Paola Peredes, 31, went undercover to a facility where men and women were being 'treated' for homosexuality
Those confined to the clinics are subjected to inhumane living and working conditions; with some women even reporting being victims of 'corrective rape'
Many of the clinics operate under the pretense that they serve as drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers
Peredes, herself a lesbian, felt compelled to create photo series as she was navigating her own sexuality
After going inside the clinics and interviewing former patients, Peredes staged a shoot depicting the horrors that she had herself witness, and that had been described to her
One photographer has captured the shocking realities of the torturous facilities in Ecuador that supposedly 'cure' homosexuality.
Inside the clinics, artist Paola Peredes, 31, discovered innumerable horrors including withholding food, forced prayer, and even 'corrective rape'.
Many of these facilities - which exist not only in Ecuador, but elsewhere in South America, Europe, and beyond - continue to operate under the guise that they treat drug and alcohol addicts, when in reality they serve a much more horrifying purpose…

Gay in Latin America: Legal but deadly - CNN - CNN.com

The IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) report, and other reports from the region, show that violence against LGBT individuals is becoming more extreme. They are often stonedtortured and raped before they are killed, and crimes often go unpunished.
Violence despite progressive LGBT protection laws

The perplexing narrative about being gay in Latin America
March 3, 2017
(CNN)On a February night in 2008, Luis Alberto Rojas Marin says, his life changed forever.
At 26 years old, the Peruvian gay man was arrested by police officers while heading home shortly after midnight. Throughout the six hours he was in police custody, he says, he was stripped, raped with a baton and verbally abused by police officers before being let go.
All of this, he says, because of his sexuality.
Peruvian authorities investigated the incident and reported that Marin was taken into custody after neighbors reported unfamiliar people in the vicinity of the highway. The authorities also told the Organization of American States (OAS), which has been looking into the allegations, that they conducted an extensive investigation and found no indication the acts described by Marin had occurred.
In the nine years since, Marin has complained, but few have listened. After multiple failed attempts to have his case heard in Peru, Marin took it to the OAS Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which monitors and protects human rights in the Americas. The commission heard his case December 1…
Marin says he hopes to have an answer soon -- it's not clear when the commission will issue its ruling -- but mostly he wants justice for anyone else that may have been raped or tortured because of their sexuality.
"I would have liked to be able to turn the page on this, and to put this behind me. But I am putting my face out there for everyone (who has been a victim)," he says. "I'm not doing this for me. I'm doing this because I am a human being who pleads for and begs for justice for all the people who have been victims and anyone that might have died."
His case is not isolated. Nearly 600 people died across Latin America from anti-LGBT violence between January 2013 and March 2014, according to a 2015 report by the IACHR.
The IACHR report, and other reports from the region, show that violence against LGBT individuals is becoming more extreme. They are often stonedtortured and raped before they are killed, and crimes often go unpunished.
Many times, crimes against the LGBT population go underreported because of fear of reprisals and skepticism of the justice system.
Violence despite progressive LGBT protection laws
Latin America offers a contradictory narrative: The region has the highest rates of violence against the LGBT community, according to research done by Transgender Europe, a non-governmental organization, but it also has some of the most progressive laws for LGBT equality and protection…

Fr. Marty Kurylowicz - June 9, 2017
Excerpts:

Holy Family Parish, Sparta, Michigan

The hierarchy and Pope Francis -  vividly validated the reasoning for the immediacy - why I came out in March 1997, as pastor of Holy Family Parish, Sparta, Michigan - for the protection of gay children, as young as 4 and 5 years of age - from the lifelong harmful effects growing up gay or bisexual - during early childhood caused by the influence of anti-gay social and religious norms. These lifelong harmful effects can be clearly observed in the curia and hierarchy fierce homophobic behavior - their inability to form life-long meaningful and fulfilling relationships, including their inability to connect with others, their lack of empathy for others, their over concerns about outward appearance, status and careers, as noted in Pope Francis "Christmas address to the curia", December 22, 2014.  It is not only their complete absence of maintaining any ongoing dialogue between science and religion on the topic homosexual sexual orientation for the past 60 years, which is directly against the words of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI , it is also by their immediate emotional explosive outbursts to the 2014 midterm report of Synod session on Family - that listed notes of the open discussion that took place -  discussing ways of how to be pastorally more welcoming to gay people and their families, including ways of valuing long term committed gay relationships. There was a lot of emotional outbursts among the curia and hierarchyhowever, there is absolutely - no detail reasoning to substantiate their extraordinary hostile and aggressive reactions to the report. So intense was their fierce emotional reaction that the continuation of this open discussion on gay people scheduled for the second synod on Family session 2015 had to be canceled.

Sadly, one cannot, also, help to notice the enormous amount of the emotional psychic energy that is use by the curia and the hierarchy completely absorbed in an anti-gay obsession and the enormous amount of Pope Francis emotional psychic energy is used in reaching out to all people globally in nearly every situation in extraordinary effort to be inclusive of everyone, particularly those most forgotten and are in need of our help. Pope Francis has been relentless in this regard since his election to the papacy in March 2013.

As Church Shifts, a Cardinal Welcomes Gays; They Embrace a ‘Miracle’
The New York Times
June 13, 2017
NEWARK — The word “pilgrimage” usually evokes visions of far-off, exotic places, but for some 100 gay and lesbian Catholics and their families, a pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart here on a recent Sunday was more like a homecoming.
The doors to the cathedral were opened to them, and they were welcomed personally by the leader of the Archdiocese of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin. They were seated on folding chairs at the cathedral’s center, in front of the altar in the towering sanctuary, under the blue-tinted glow of stained glass.
“I am Joseph, your brother,” Cardinal Tobin told the group, which included lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Catholics from around New York and the five dioceses in New Jersey. “I am your brother, as a disciple of Jesus. I am your brother, as a sinner who finds mercy with the Lord.”
The welcoming of a group of openly gay people to Mass by a leader of Cardinal Tobin’s standing in the Roman Catholic Church in this country would have been unthinkable even five years ago. But Cardinal Tobin, whom Pope Francis appointed to Newark last year, is among a small but growing group of bishops changing how the American church relates to its gay members. They are seeking to be more inclusive and signaling to subordinate priests that they should do the same…
Four years ago, Pope Francis shook the Catholic world with his comment about gay priests seeking the Lord: “Who am I to judge?” But it was unclear how his words would affect Catholics seeking acceptance in the pews…
But gestures like Cardinal Tobin’s are evidence that Pope Francis’ words are having an impact…

 DR. EVELYN HOOKER

In the USA, 1957Evelyn Hooker’s most notable and ground breaking research proving that homosexuality is not a mental illness was completed called:-

in which she administered several psychological tests to groups of self-identified male homosexuals and heterosexuals and asked experts to identify the homosexuals and rate their mental health. The experiment, which other researchers subsequently repeated, argues that homosexuality is not a mental disorder, as there was nodetectable difference between homosexual and heterosexual men in terms of mental adjustment... Photo

Being Gay Is Just as Healthy as Being Straight
Evelyn Hooker's pioneering research debunked the popular myth that homosexuals are inherently less mentally healthy than heterosexuals, leading to significant changes in how psychology views and treats people who are gay...
Hooker's work was the first to empirically test the assumption that gay men were mentally unhealthy and maladjusted. The fact that no differences were found between gay and straight participants sparked more research in this area and began to dismantle the myth that homosexual men and women are inherently unhealthy.
In conjunction with other empirical results, this work led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from the DSM in 1973 (it had been listed as a sociopathic personality disorder). In 1975, the American Psychological Association publicly supported this move, stating that "homosexuality per se implies no impairment in judgment, reliability or general social and vocational capabilities…(and mental health professionals should) take the lead in removing the stigma of mental illness long associated with homosexual orientation." Although prejudice and stigma still exist in society, this research has helped millions of gay men and women gain acceptance in the mental health community.

 Know thyself
Oracle at Delphi

This above all:
to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

William Shakespeare

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your
brother's eye and pay no attention to the
plank in your own eye? How can you
say to your brother, 'Brother,
let me take the speck
out of your eye,
'when you yourself fail to see the
plank in your own eye? You hypocrite,
first take the plank out of your eye, and
then you will see clearly to remove
the speck from your
brother's eye.

Luke 6:40-42

AUSCHWITZ -- CHRISTMAS 2008 -- A flashback far more severe than in --- BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN – December 26, 2008 – Fr. Marty Kurylowicz

I have been so saddened by Pope Benedict XVI's cruel words to LGBTQ people around the world, to their parents, families and friends, most ESPECIALLY TO CHILDREN. After reading the accounts of this human travesty, I did not know where to find comfort or hope. And then I thought about your blog. And just like receiving a wonderful Christmas present, sure enough I found the hope and comfort I needed to hear. Photo

I am a priest and a clinical psychologist (MS). And for one of my research projects I chose to do a qualitative research project of the recorded verbal accounts of survivors of the Holocaust, 50 years after the event. It was a difficult research project, because I could not make sense of one of the accounts of the survivors.

For example, one survivor was describing what it was like riding the train to AUSCHWITZ, but he was describing how he was trying to make conversation with a girl on the train. I listened and wrote out this one account almost 30 times but I just was not getting it. I could not understand how this man could be talking about wanting to make conversation with this girl on the same train to AUSCHWITZ!?!

Because I had taught high school religion classes for nearly 20 years, it hit me hard, like a flash of lightning. Instantly, all the pieces came together, so fast. Though this survivor was in his late 60’s when he gave his account of his story on audiotape, he was remembering the events that took place, but naturally they were recounted through the mind of a teenager, the age he was on the train to AUSCHWITZ. That is why the dialogue wasn’t making any sense. I was thinking of him as an old man because the voice on the audiotape was the voice of a 68-year-old. As shocking as a bomb going off, all the different aspects of the psychological developmental stages of a teenager kicked in. I realized only too fully that he was just a young normal teenager on that train!!! And so was the girl he was trying to make conversation, and their moms and dads were there with them!!! There was no way to pretend I did not realize what I discovered. It kept hitting me: this is not some script from a movie or TV miniseries on the Holocaust. No; as much as I wished it were. The reality of this horror hit me all at once, on so many different levels of consciousness: what an unbelievable horror it was!!! How could we treat human beings like this! I remember when the realization of the magnitude of this horror first hit me, like an instant reflex. I threw down the transcript I was holding as if it were a blazing hot poker. It kept hitting me over and over again that this is not a movie script or some kind of play – this really happened! It really happened! Oh, my God, how could this have happened!?!!!

My supervisor told me at the time that I was traumatized by the oral content. Qualitative research is an attempt to understand the complexity of emotions, the kinds of emotions, and the degree of intensity involved. Our emotions are what allow us to connect with other human beings. We identify with the non-verbal quality of emotions more immediately and strongly than with the words used to express them. The non-verbal qualities include tone of voice, eye contact, facial expression, body posture, and gestures, all of which express emotions. Emotions are why we can connect with people through time, across cultures, and individually. It is the expression of human emotions in the arts that makes some works of art timeless, because they continually speak to all people through the ages.

And when I heard what Pope Benedict XVI said about homosexuals and transgendered human beings at Christmas 2008, I felt that same trauma all over again. Because in some way, somehow, he was conveying in a non-verbal manner the horror of the Holocaust, in what appears to be a traumatized, trance-like, accepted social norm from that period of time dictating that some people just don’t count, aren’t important, and can be easily disposed of. And if you rock the boat, you could be next to be disposed of.

I truly have to believe that a person in his position would not be doing this consciously or intentionally. The horror of the Holocaust is like an atomic bomb with fallout so extensive that it spreads over a radius of more than 150 miles. The horror of the Holocaust began in 1933 and ended in 1945. The psychological fallout would have been far more extensive and more deadly, especially when it is notidentified as such.

It hit me the way it did when I realized that the research I was doing about a Holocaust survivor, a man 68 years old telling his story, who was remembering what it was like to be on the train to AUSCHWITZ, from the perspective of a young teenage boy who just wanted to talk to a girl. It seemed like the same kind of horror, a tacit assumption that some people don't count and can be disposed of without remorse. Could it be that Benedict XVI is unconsciously repeating Hitler's crime against humanity by taking on a long-accepted social attitude from that period of time?

The question I asked myself was: what would it have been like for someone growing up gay during the Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933 -1945

What would be the severity of the psychological effects on a boy who grew up to be gay in Germany during the time of Hitler’s NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS 1933 -1945? During the Nazi regime, homosexuals were publicly defamed and falsely accused for the major social problems of that time, which was done to incite massive public hatred and hostility directed against homosexuals. Homosexuals were used for medical experiments, physically mutilated, brutally tortured and exterminated.

Would this child, as an adult, in a severe dissociated state of mind from his own homosexual feelings (Harry Stack Sullivan MD, Dissociative Processes, Clinical Studies on Psychiatry (1956)), unconsciously perpetuate the terrifying horror of the insensitivity he had experienced growing up? If he found himself in a position of authority would he recreate the same social and political environment of violence and terror for homosexuals that he experienced, as a child who grew up to be gay, during the NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS?

I think in truth on a much deeper level I was frightened, really frightened, to hear Pope Benedict XVI’s Christmas remarks against homosexuals and transgendered human beings and even more frightened by the silence from the larger global community of human beings. What is so frightening is, even if there is agreement that one person does not matter or is not important, in truth then no one matters. Therefore, when I thought about your blog and what you did on October 5, 2008, I felt more reassured, I felt hope, and I felt comforted. NOW, isn’t that the true meaning of Christmas?

God Bless you,

Fr. Marty Kurylowicz
