Re: Appealing my case to Pope Francis

Dear Fr. Ron Richards,

Bishop Walter Hurley’s (Diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA) canonical proceedings to have me removed from the priesthood, 15 years after I came out in 1997, are beyond being questionably unethical to outright blatantly biased and malicious.  Sadly, this twisted use of canon law is not unique to my case, documentation will prove that this by far the norm rather than the exception (p 261,http://igitur-archive.library.uu.nl/dissertations/2003-0206-111237/inhoud.htm ). Hurley, as you know, not only chose and hired the judge, the prosecuting lawyer, including the defending lawyer, but also arbitrarily decided on the charges and the verdict. He then audaciously calls this event a trial! How is this any different from the sociopathic behavior of Chicago’s gangster of the 1920s, Al Capone, who was notorious for his domination of organized crime, which included having his thugs bribing police officers, judges, lawyers, juries, etc.? (http://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2013/01/gay-marriage-uk-pm-david-cameron-lack.html)

Hurley’s arranged and hired canonical proceedings are a travesty of justice and would be completely laughable, except for the fact of the devastating harm it causes not just to me, but more importantly to millions of children, which in the end affects everyone. This sham of a trial is meant to conceal the authoritative facts about sexual orientation and how gay children are harm, which was the sole reason why I felt morally obligated to “come out” in 1997 to help protect very young children (http://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2012/09/vaticans-antigay-teachings-are_1770.html).  This contrived pretense of a trial has been used often in the past, fine-tuning it into a sophisticated silencing tactic of last resort. The presumed hope in the end is that I will fade away like so many others before me, though not all, and thus concealing the authoritative facts  why I came out in 1997. I came out to draw public attention to the facts about the sexual orientation of children growing up gay and the harmful influence and violence caused by antigay social and religious norms, in particular, for Catholics, the Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings -- are severe and last throughout a child’s lifetime, especially disrupting their ability to form long and lasting relationships. The harmful effects are not isolated only to these children who grow up to be gay, but also affects their families, siblings, friends and anyone whom they might consider special in their lives. They are a prescribed societal sentence of implicit isolation, which place at risk of suicide so many innocent adolescents and young adults. They stifle an enormous amount of human potential in the world that otherwise could be put to use for finding cures for diseases, offering better ways of maintaining peace among people and improving the quality of life for everyone in the world. It is well known that children who grow to be gay and are not subjected to the harmful influence of antigay social and religious norms function as normally as anyone else.

But most especially Hurley’s deceitful and ruthless canonical trial proceedings were meant to conceal what happened to me after I came out, how I was threatened in secret with the directive from the Vatican, presuming from Ratzinger, to be sent away to be re-educated on the subject of sexual orientation - a form of reparative/conversion therapy for several months (http://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2012/11/reparative-therapy-changing-homosexual.html). Hurley’s spent an inordinate amount time in preparation of this trial, extreme measures and expensive antics, i.e. hiring the best canon law judge in the USA to try my case that it clearly all seems unwarranted, especially charging me 15 years after I came out in 1997.  Just how threatening can I be? Even though at the time of my “coming out” in 1997, it was called “unprecedented” by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops - I am not the threat.  It is the science about early childhood growing up gay that is the ultimate threat to Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings demanding their immediate renouncement, i.e. the same as Galileo. It may also be Hurley’s feeble attempt to expunge Ratzinger’s (Benedict XVI) notorious record of criminal antigay tactics used against gay people i.e. but not limited to people in religious orders, clerics, personnel, etc. (http://ncronline.org/news/vatican/gods-rotteweiler-silenced-many-head-doctrinal-congregation).

Hurley’s trial proceedings, however, fictitious has had a continual deteriorating effect on my health - having been hospitalized 3 times in the year due to the ongoing stress. I have explained, all this, in my letter dated February 10, 2013, which was the day before Benedict XVI announced his surprised resignation and
lightning struck St. Peter’s Basilica (Photo). It has now been 16 long years since I came out 1997 because of the life-threatening harm to gay children and I have suffered through Hurley’s ongoing malicious tactics, the latest being this sham of a trial causing a considerable declined in my health and well-being(http://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2013/05/gay-catholic-priest-fr-marty-kurylowicz.html). Therefore, due to my declining health related to Hurley’s corrupt tactics (i.e., ...gamesmanship...fostering a state of upset or unrest in the other party as a means of reducing their resistance to yielding... p. 328 http://igitur-archive.library.uu.nl/dissertations/2003-0206-111237/full.pdf) in good conscience, it is time to bring all this into the light (1) to prevent the lifetime harm to children caused by antigay social and religious norms i.e. the Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings.  And now because of how I have been subjected to Hurley’s unethical canon law tactics, in good conscience I feel morally obligated (2) to bring this also to light and how those in the Church who were similarly mistreated trying to protect those most in need of help. As far back as the 1980s, theologians,  sisters, priests, bishops, etc. were involved in the education and research of sexual orientation in efforts to improve the understanding and acceptance of gay people, particularly during the beginning years of Aids crises in the USA.  This was a dark time in our recent history when gay people were considered the very least of the brethren, the fringe of society, who were in most need of our help.  And yet these courageous Christians were relentlessly subjected to the malicious tactics of canon law arbitrarily interpreted, enforced and made though all camouflaged by Ratzinger’s politeness strategy (i.e. Hunthausen’s case) to avoid any public display of conflict and a way of maintaining secrecy (p 261 http://igitur-archive.library.uu.nl/dissertations/2003-0206-111237/full.pdf - http://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2013/01/gay-marriage-uk-pm-david-cameron-lack.html ).  However, today Pope Francis completely reversed this situation on Pentecost 2013:

"We cannot become starched Christians, too polite, who speak of theology calmly over tea. We have to become courageous Christians and seek out those (who need help most),’ he said” (http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/18/us-pope-personal-idUSBRE94H0CL20130518).

“...the Holy Spirit would appear to create disorder in the Church, since he brings the diversity of charisms and gifts; yet all this, by his working, is a great source of wealth, for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of unity, which does not mean uniformity, but which leads everything back to harmony. In the Church, it is the Holy Spirit who creates harmony...Only the Spirit can awaken diversity, plurality and multiplicity, while at the same time building unity. Here too, when we are the ones who try to create diversity and close ourselves up in what makes us different and other, we bring division. When we are the ones who want to build unity in accordance with our human plans, we end up creating uniformity, standardization...So let us ask ourselves: Am I open to the harmony of the Holy Spirit, overcoming every form of exclusivity? Do I let myself be guided by him, living in the Church and with the Church?...  (http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/francesco/homilies/2013/documents/papa-francesco_20130519_omelia-pentecoste_en.html ).”

Deep Harmony which Unites the Truths of Science with the Truths of Faith - John Paul II - 1979, November 10 - “...Galileo formulated important norms of an epistemological character, which are indispensable to reconcile Holy Scripture and science...” Photo  http://inters.org/John-Paul-II-deep-harmony

Ratzinger/Benedict XVI - dismisses  the relevance of science from religion because religion transcends science - 1986 - PASTORAL CARE OF HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS “...The Church is thus in a position to learn from scientific discovery but also to transcend the horizons of science and to be confident that her more global vision does greater justice to the rich reality of the human person in his spiritual and physical dimensions, created by God and heir, by grace, to eternal life...” (this statement is completely - unsubstantiated  -  there is no authoritative data to back it up - thus renders it Ratzinger's personal bias antigay teachings, however, not Church teaching - Fr. MSK)

In 1990, Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, in a speech in Parma, Italy stated that  "At the time of Galileo the Church remained much more faithful to reason than Galileo himself. The process against Galileo was reasonable and just." http://www.eou.edu/soctheory/lecture/whatistheory.htm

In 1992, the investigation was completed and he made his public apology to Galileo that the Vatican was wrong and Galileo was right. “The Vatican's formal acknowledgement of an error, moreover, is a rarity in an institution built over centuries on the belief that the Church is the final arbiter in matters of faith… Pope John Paul II himself has said that the scientist was ‘imprudently opposed.’" http://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/31/world/after-350-years-vatican-says-galileo-was-right-it-moves.html - http://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2013/05/gay-catholic-priest-fr-marty-kurylowicz.html

Science can purify religion from error and superstition; Religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes. Each can draw the other into a wider world, a world in which both can flourish. John Paul II

Therefore, it is crucial to bring to light these 2 critical life-and-death situations as described above for the sake of the lives of children globally and for those in the Church so mistreated - who had the  courage to “take to the streets of the world’ and reach ‘the very outskirts of existence” to seek out those in most need of help, the very fringe of society, particularly at the beginning of the Aids crises in the USA - by immediately appealing my case directly to Pope Francis and avoiding sending it thorough the Curia. As I have been previously warned at a meeting on February 15, 2008 by Hurley that the Curia would be of no help to me in an appeal. Pope Francis is well aware the urgent need of reforming the Curia, which was made clear to him at the time of his election and afterwards he made clear it’s his key priority  (http://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2013/05/children-growing-up-gay-vaticans.html ).

Sincerely,

Fr. Marty Kurylowicz

(p 261)...All of the above-named powers to act are entrusted to the Holy See to be exercised in regard to particular churches. They are not powers which can be applied in the other direction: that is, a local bishop cannot conduct a visitation of Rome, appoint Roman officials, etc. Rome also applied legal power through the act of interpretation. Cardinal Ratzinger’s letter to Hunthausen with the visitation findings is perhaps the best example. Here Ratzinger explained to Hunthausen which specific teachings – some articulated in canon law, some in other Church documents -- needed binding application in the local church (in other words, which Church rules needed enforcing). Notably, some of the directives that Ratzinger called on Hunthausen to enforce were rules that his own congregation had established (cf. his references to the 1975 instruction Inter Insigniores and the 1976 Declaration on Sexual Ethics). Thus Ratzinger demonstrated the Holy See’s and his own congregation’s power to not only interpret and enforce Church guidelines, but also to make them in the first place...

God's Rottweiler' silenced many as head of doctrinal congregation - 2/27/13
Although recent portrayals of Benedict XVI play on his white-haired grandfatherliness and his desire to fade into a quiet retirement of books and music, many Catholics with long memories have images in their minds of "God's Rottweiler."
During his time at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (1981-2005), the office became one of the most controversial Vatican agencies. He decried secularization, liberation theology, radical feminism, homosexuality, religious pluralism and bioethics. Photo
Numerous Catholics found themselves in hot ecclesial water: Fr. Hans Küng; Jesuit Fr. Karl Rahner; Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen; Leonardo Boff; Fr. Charles Curran; Fr. Tissa Balasuriya; Jesuit Fr. Roger Haight; Fr. Matthew Fox; Loretto Sr. Jeannine Gramick and Salvatorian Fr. Robert Nugent; Dominican Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez; and Jesuit Fr. Jacques Dupuis, among others...
...He criticized the overreach of bishops' conferences. At the time the American bishops issued their pastoral letter in 1983 on war and peace...
...His first few years as head of the congregation dealt much with liberation theology, a movement centered on the poor and one that Ratzinger believed had ties to Marxism. In 1985, the Vatican silenced the Brazilian Boff, at the time a Franciscan priest and scholar of liberation theology...
...Besides liberation theology, writings on sexual ethics became a hot topic. In 1983, Hunthausen, a well-known progressive bishop, allowed a Mass for Dignity, a group for gay and lesbian Catholics, in his cathedral, which resulted in complaints to the doctrinal congregation...

The Rev. Martin Kurylowicz got lots of hugs after Good Friday services at Sparta's Holy Family Catholic Church

"I was just filled with tears, there were so many hugs," said Kurylowicz, 47, following Friday's well-attended afternoon service. "It means more now, because they know the real me."

…He spoke up after attending a national conference on gay issues and the Catholic Church in early March. He was disturbed by accounts of homosexual children feeling isolated and parents feeling they did something wrong.

"I just couldn't walk away from it," he said. "I couldn't deny the pain."

He hopes his admission will raise awareness of violence against homosexuals and teen suicide, and help teach others that homosexuality is not a choice…

Kurylowicz comes out
By Charles Honey
June 28, 1997, The Grand Rapids Press

…A spokeswoman for the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference said Kurylowicz's coming out to his congregation, first in a newsletter then from the pulpit on Holy Thursday, is "unprecedented." "No one knows of anyone who has spoken of this from the pulpit," said Sister Mary Ann Walsh. Photo

"It was one part [being gay] of myself that was just closed off," says the youthful-looking 47-year old. But the feelings persisted.

"Just like any heterosexual, those feelings are always there," explains Kurylowicz, who speaks with a nervous but friendly intensity. "You're shamed by it every time they come up. Then you (start) running away.

"You stop being who you are. You become something that you think others will find more acceptable." Kurylowicz became a workaholic…

But he thought the source of his growing depression was overwork. He went into counseling, where in time he opened up about his sexuality.

"Every time I faced it, the better I felt," he recalls. He smiles often, furrows his brow frequently as he describes those days. Eventually he attended support groups for gays, which helped him shed layers of shame and fear. "It was the first time I saw more positive images of (gay) people," he says.
"I thought, 'What was I running away from?' "

…Meanwhile, classes in psychology and his own studies convinced Kurylowicz that homosexual orientation is not chosen,…

Gradually, he felt the pressure of suppressing his feelings lift, giving him "a tremendous capacity to live."

A few years ago he told family and friends he was gay. But he didn't decide to tell his congregation until he attended a national conference in March sponsored by New Ways Ministry, an organization advocating more understanding of gays in the Catholic Church.

Kurylowicz says his decision was triggered by a report that homosexually oriented children as young as 4 realize they're different. He was moved by the pain those children feel. Photo

"Then I realized they don't have a voice, and I'm the one [a  Catholic priest] that's supposed to say something," Kurylowicz says. "That's why I couldn't walk away from it."…

STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE and CHILDREN --- “Don’t Make Waves” --- Benedict XVI and Curia’s Child Sexual Abuse Cover-ups and Gay Obsession

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE

Introduction
by Deborah Du Nann Winter and Dana C. Leighton

Direct violence is horrific, but its brutality usually gets our attention: we notice it, and often respond to it. Structural violence, however, is almost always invisible, embedded in ubiquitous social structures, normalized by stable institutions and regular experience. Structural violence occurs whenever people are disadvantaged by political, legal, economic, or cultural traditions. Because they are longstanding, structural inequities usually seem ordinary—the way things are and always have been. But structural violence produces suffering and death as often as direct violence does, though the damage is slower, more subtle, more common, and more difficult to repair. The chapters in this section teach us about some important but invisible forms of structural violence, and alert us to the powerful cultural mechanisms that create and maintain them over generations. Photo

Johan Galtung originally framed the term “structural violence” to mean any constraint on human potential caused by economic and political structures (1969). Unequal access to resources, to political power, to education, to health care, or to legal standing, are forms of structural violence. When inner-city children have inadequate schools while others do not, when gays and lesbians are fired for their sexual orientation, when laborers toil in inhumane conditions, when people of color endure environmental toxins in their neighborhoods, structural violence exists. Unfortunately, even those who are victims of structural violence often do not see the systematic ways in which their plight is choreographed by unequal and unfair distribution of society’s resources. Such is the insidiousness of structural violence…

Recognizing the operation of structural violence forces us to ask questions about how and why we tolerate it, questions that often have painful answers. The first chapter in this section, “Social Injustice,” by Susan Opotow, argues that our normal perceptual/cognitive processes lead us to care about people inside our scope of justice, but rarely care about those people outside. Injustice that would be instantaneously confronted if it occurred to someone we love or know is barely noticed if it occurs to strangers or those who are invisible or irrelevant to us. We do not seem to be able to open our minds and our hearts to everyone; moral exclusion is a product of our normal cognitive processes. But Opotow argues convincingly that we can reduce its nefarious effects by becoming aware of our distorted perceptions. Inclusionary thinking can be fostered by relationships, communication, and appreciation of diversity.

One outcome of exclusionary thinking is the belief that victims of violence must in some way deserve their plight. But certainly it is easy to see that young children do not deserve to be victims…

Benedict XVI, Cardinals & Bishops Child Sexual Abuse Cover-ups - 30 years

Implicit Child Abuse - Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings
...the harmful influence of antigay social and religious norms -- in particular, for Catholics, the Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings -- are severe and last throughout a child’s lifetime, especially disrupting their ability to form long and lasting relationships. The harmful effects are not isolated only to these children who grow up to be gay, but also affect their families, siblings, friends and anyone whom they might consider special in their lives. They are a prescribed societal sentence of implicit isolation, which place at risk of suicide so many innocent adolescents and young adults. They stifle an enormous amount of human potential in the world that otherwise could be put to use for finding cures for diseases, offering better ways of maintaining peace among people and improving the quality of life for everyone in the world...

CHILDREN AND STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE
Milton Schwebel and Daniel J. Christie

The reduction of direct violence requires not only interventions aimed at individuals, but also structural changes aimed at how societies operate, as Kostelny and Garbarino have outlined in their chapter. In this chapter, we examine the effects of structural violence on children. Structural violence is the unequal distribution of power and wealth within and between societies, and it has insidious effects on the health, intellectual development, education, and general welfare of millions of children. The cruelties of structural violence on children are often subtle, unspoken, unrecognized, and even normalized, regarded by many people as natural or “just the way things are.” This chapter focuses on how children suffer the cruel effects of structural violence, and why it has long-lasting consequences on their intellectual, social, and emotional development… Photo

Why Bother About Homosexuals? Homophobia and Sexual Politics in Nazi Germany - 2001 Geoffrey J. Giles
Why bother about homosexuals? ...To minimize or ignore their suffering, as many if not most scholarly historians have largely done till today, is to perpetuate the view upheld after the war by the Allies, and subsequently even by the West German Supreme Court, that former pink triangle prisoners were sex criminals who essentially deserved punishment. If a detailed examination of the Nazi vendetta can bring us closer to an understanding of that continuing prejudice, then we can truly say that we have contributed to the mission of this [United States Holocaust Memorial] Museum.  Gay-bashing, and even the murder of homosexuals, still are prevalent in Western democracies. An historical analysis of what happened in Nazi Germany is not going to halt that entirely. But it may suggest to thoughtful people that “to be a bystander is to share in the guilt,” in the words of one of the Museum’s publications. The well-known test of any democracy is how well it treats its minorities. The awful example of the Third Reich shows us how easy it is for a government to make scapegoats out of such a minority, by branding homosexuals as sex criminals, pederasts, and even treasonous conspirators, so that most Germans could feel comfortable about looking the other way while the Nazis went about their repression, torture, beatings, incarceration, castration, and outright murder of homosexuals. It is fitting for us to commemorate these victims, but that should not be an end in itself. The crucial lesson of commemoration of the victims of Nazism is vigilance. Virtually no one today believes that there could possibly be a descent to that appalling level of violent repression against homosexuals. Germans in 1932, the year before Hitler came to power, felt much the same way. Wholesale castrations of homosexuals were unimaginable, let alone state-sanctioned murder. And yet they happened by the thousand. We should strive to be better citizens than were Germans in the 1930s, if only on an individual level, in protecting fellow citizens who happen to be gay from the homophobic attacks, whether from private or public figures or institutions. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum sets a fine example of inclusiveness. Let us try to live up to its vision. Photo

The Catholic Church and Sex - Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton
The Millennial Pope | FRONTLINE |PBS - 1999

Brief Excerpt:

I think I am probably typical of many people in my generation, and within the Catholic Church maybe especially, who without knowing it, developed a kind of homophobia. A very deep homophobia. And it comes from the way I was raised--in a Catholic family that did not speak much about sex and in an elementary school system where there wasn't sex education and no one really explained much to you. And you just grew up sort of discovering things by yourself... Photo: Cain Slaying Abel, Jacopo Palma c1590
...And so the whole idea of homosexuality very early on became a very negative thing. And a very, well, evil thing. And when I learned moral theology in my major seminary, I only learned about homosexuality as activity. Nobody made a distinction between homosexual orientation and homosexual activity. And so I never thought of it except in terms of homosexual activity. And that was condemned. Wrong. And so I didn't have an understanding as a priest and a confessor, people coming to me to confess their sins, if they confessed such a sin I had no idea of how I might help them in any way. Because I felt with a deep conviction, that this was a simple choice, and like any other choice, we can choose this or choose that. And so there should be no big problem. And I would talk that way, which was not helpful to somebody who's coming out of the situation where their whole human person is moved, in regard to relationships and affective relationships, toward people of the same sex.
And so I went along with that kind of understanding, and I guess lack of understanding of homosexuality. Until suddenly in my own family I was confronted when my brother wrote a letter to my siblings and me and my mother coming out--saying he is gay and had been all his life--had struggled against it in various ways as many homosexual people do. Because first of all, you're taught it's wrong. And so you somehow feel it's wrong. And you're trying to do the right thing. So you're trying not to be who you are...

...And when I heard what Pope Benedict XVI said about homosexuals and transgendered human beings at Christmas 2008, I felt that same trauma all over again. Because in some way, somehow, he was conveying in a non-verbal manner the horror of the Holocaust, in what appears to be a traumatized, trance-like, accepted social norm from that period of time dictating that some people just don’t count, aren’t important, and can be easily disposed of. And if you rock the boat, you could be next to be disposed of...

Sexual Repression and Pornography

Homosexuals and the Third Reich
by James Steakley - 1974
...Despite, and perhaps because of, their relentless emphasis upon strength, purity, cleanliness and masculinity, the all-male Nazi groups surely contained a strong element of deeply repressed homoeroticism. The degree of repression was evidenced by the Nazi reaction to those who were openly gay. In the Bible, the scapegoat was the sacrificial animal on whose head the inchoate guilt of the entire community was placed. Homosexuals served precisely this function in the Third Reich.
The ideological rationale for the mass murder of homosexuals during the Third Reich was quite another matter. According to the doctrine of Social Darwinism, only the fittest are meant to survive, and the law of the jungle is the final arbiter of human history. If the Germans were destined to become the master race by virtue of their inherent biological superiority, the breeding stock could only be improved by the removal of degenerates.

Retarded, deformed and homosexual individuals could be eliminated with the dispassionate conscientiousness of a gardener pulling weeds. (Indeed, it is the very vehemence and passion with which homosexuals were persecuted that compels us to look beyond the pseudo-scientific rationale for a deeper, psychological dynamic.) http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/pwh/steakley-nazis.asp

The Enemy Within: Homosexuality in the Third Reich, 1933-1945
by Eliot H. Boden - 2011
...The eradication of same-sex behavior was an essential component of Nazi efforts to achieve the racial purification of Germany, defined by historian Rüdiger Lautman as “an attempt to keep the Fatherland free from taint.”Repression of homosexuality was necessary to protect a “fit and healthy social organism, the racial community, a Volksgemeinschaft,” or Volk – the pinnacle of Nazi social organization. The role of the racially-pure Volk was to uphold German traditions and disseminate Nazi ideals at the most basic level of German society, the family. In the words of Nazi propagandist Ludwig Leonhardt, the German family “embraces everything that existed spiritually and psychically as a living patrimony” and must be passed on from parents to children in order to “push our heritage ever forward, so that a German Volk may emerge out of an ever- repeated interlacing of families.”Nazi doctrine envisioned a strictly hierarchical society with the nuclear family at its core. Established gender roles and a strict division of labor between the sexes within the family reinforced patriarchal authority and engendered loyalty to the Führer and the state...
...Although homosexual behavior outwardly appeared to be incompatible with
Nazi ideology, core principles of the Nazi movement in fact aroused homoerotic tendencies. Ironically, many homosexual men were initially attracted to Nazism, which emphasized virility, strength, and comradeship to forge a strong national polity. The excessive masculinity of the Third Reich was based on the philosophical concept of the Mannerbünd, a male-dominated elite united by devotion to a shared goal. Under the Nazi regime, the patriarchal hierarchy established by the Mannerbünd was mirrored throughout German society – in the family, in the workplace, at school, and especially in the military. The Wehrmacht specifically recognized the insidious allure of male bonding, and adopted measures to punish incidents of sexual contact between soldiers. Official army directives emphasized that “the danger of homosexual activity is especially acute when healthy, youthful, and virile men live together in close physical and emotional comradeship, and have no opportunity to have sexual relations with women.”Isolated from women by the realities of war, young soldiers often vented their pent-up sexual energies on each other. As Geoffrey J. Giles notes, “Nonsexual snuggling seems to have been unexceptional” in the Schutzstaffel (SS), and most soldiers did not view further sexual exploration, such as groping or fondling, as “especially reprehensible or anything more than mildly indecent.”Even in situations in which heterosexual outlets for sexual desire were available, Nazi rhetoric exacerbated homosexual tendencies. Robert G. Waite notes that Nazi dogma, by “denigrating females, encouraged the maturing adolescent to focus on the beauty of male personality and body.”Misogyny thus reinforced homoeroticism in the Wehrmacht. While many German soldiers did not see their sexual predilections and political beliefs as fundamentally incongruous, the state was nevertheless incapable of accepting their abnormality.Homosexuals in the Third Reich were frequently disparaged as maladjusted deviants, but there was not a scientific consensus on the origins of their pathology to justify these claims...

Pope Benedict XVI on the Church's Role in Public Life
The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life - 11/14/07
Short excerpts:
...Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion. General Principles
In June 2004, five months before the U.S. presidential election, Cardinal Ratzinger sent a letter to Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington, D.C., and Bishop Wilton Gregory of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on the question of whether it is permissible to deny communion to Catholic politicians whose positions on abortion and other issues contradict church teachings.
Congregation for the Doctrine Of the Faith
Cardinal Ratzinger served as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which oversees Roman Catholic Church doctrine, prior to his appointment as pope. The following documents were issued by the Congregation during his tenure.
1. Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Collaboration of Men and Women in the Church and in the World (July 31, 2004)
This letter speaks to the "active collaboration" between men and women in society, the family and the Church.
2. Considerations Regarding Proposals To Give Legal Recognition To Unions Between Homosexual Persons (July 31, 2003)
This document emphasizes the protection and promotion of marriage as the foundation of the family and the stability of society.
3. Doctrinal Note: The Participation of Catholics in Political Life (January 16, 2003) This Note is directed to the bishops of the Catholic Church and to "Catholic politicians and all lay members of the faithful called to participate in the political life of democratic societies."

Salvaging Democracy after Election 2004

…Likewise, conservative "pro-life" Catholic bishops wrote letters to their parishioners articulating anti-Kerry and pro-Bush positions. Thus, below the media radar, there was something like religious revivalism that turned out the Christian right for Bush. One of the shocking revelations that soon came out was that during the highly contested and close 2004 US presidential election, “then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger wrote a letter to U.S. bishops while the campaign was in progress, instructing them to deny Communion to any Catholic candidate unwilling to criminalize abortion. Ratzinger's letter did not win anything close to unanimous agreement, even among the American bishops, yet he succeeded in creating a public question about John Kerry's status as a Roman Catholic. The shift among Catholic voters in 2004 was small in absolute numbers — President Bush increased his support among Catholics by 6 points from 2000 to 2004 — yet, according to one analyst, it was large enough to turn the election in Ohio, Iowa and New Mexico. Arguably, then, Ratzinger won the election for Bush." Read complete paper:

Children Growing-up Gay & Vatican's Impact Harmful - GROUPTHINK
Fr. Marty Kurylowicz - 2008
The Vatican, Galileo and the Bible
...The Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay pronouncements appear to be repeating the Vatican’s case against Galileo in 1633, which condemned him, as a heretic, for claiming “the earth revolves around the sun”, which contradicted the Vatican’s interpretation of the bible that it is “the sun that revolves around the earth.” Historians have described this conflict between the Vatican and Galileo, as the arrogance of authority vs freedom, and identifying the aspects that led the Vatican to make this error in judgment. The Vatican was the (1) sole source for interpreting the bible, objectivity is lost and the interpretations were biased to fit the unchallenged traditional constructs, which (2) opposed the free search for truth. Without the freedom of expression of ideas, the Vatican then becomes tightly insulated from any new knowledge that challenges their interpretations, which leads the Vatican to (3) rejecting the scientific findings of its time. Groupthink
The reactions of those in the Vatican are in part similar to the symptoms known as “groupthink” a concept from social psychology. (Irving Janis) “Groupthink” identifies a mode of thinking that develops in highly cohesive groups, where members tend to strive to be unified, agreeable and cooperative with each other. It is difficult to imagine how such benign qualities in groups, like the Vatican, which has the most honorable intentions and dedication to strenuously labor for achieving the best decisions that will be the most beneficial for people to experience the fullness of God’s love and blessings, however, in reality the outcome can unintentionally be quite the opposite. Making decisions that become problematic, causing unintentional violence...

“Don’t Make  Waves”

Roman Catholic hierarchy child sexual abuse “cover-ups” ordered by Benedict XVI to avoid public outrage & criminal charges falsely accused gay priests, WATERGATE? - 12/17/09, reprinted 1/2/10  - revised 1/15/10 Photo

Excerpt:
No "Checks and Balances"

A major problem with the hierarchical structure of the Roman Catholic Church is that there are no “checks and balances.” When the necessary “checks and balances” are not in place to protect any organization, it leaves "not making waves" the rule that governs the hierarchy and opens the way to many devastating mistakes harmful to everyone and allows corruption to grow. The following statements are harsh statement, but unfortunately they are heavily documented. (1) Benedict XVI and his hierarchy failed to protect children from child sexual abuse for decades. (2) They mistreated and intimidated the victims and their families who came to report the child sexual abuse, in order to cover up publicity of any child sexual abuse. (3) They failed to protect children by repeatedly reassigning the child sexual abusers to assignments where children would be present. (4) When the hierarchy’s criminal negligence failing to protect children became public, globally, in 2002 they shifted the blame wrongfully onto gay priests. (5) By falsely, against known research to the contrary, blaming gay priests they implicated the entire LGBT community and how they are fighting against Marriage Equality. When the scientific facts known for decades about human sexuality have been discounted with no substantiated facts given to explain why, it causes many questions whether Benedict XVI and his hierarchy’s fight against Marriage Equality is more a fight to maintained the cover-up of the hierarchy’s criminal negligence failing to protect children? Benedict XVI and his hierarchy need to clearly offer substantiated reasons why they are against Marriage Equality. This statement needs to be spelled out in great detail and follow Pope John Paul II’s test of truth of not separating science and religion. (6) Benedict XVI and his hierarchy’s continuous public propaganda against homosexuality encourages public intolerance towards LGBTQI adults and children. They continue to do this even though this summer 2 major Christian denominations approved LGBT singled and partnered people for all forms of ordained ministries. (7) Benedict XVI and his hierarchy’s continuous promulgation of the Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings that are harmful to children in their early childhood psychological developmental years, harm that is crippling throughout their lives. They continue this even after the beginning of 2009, the Family Acceptance Project research studies had shown the negative effects caused to youths, when their sexual orientation is not accepted, having health problems, suicidal ideation, etc. They ignore all the major medical, psychiatric, psychological and social workers national and international professional associations regarding their findings regarding human sexuality and sexual orientation. WHEN DO WE START PROTECTING CHILDREN?!?!

The case against Vatican power
by Geoffrey Robertson – September 8, 2010 – New Statesman
The Catholic Church claims the privileges of statehood, which gives it huge advantages over other religious institutions…
…The Catholic Church is the only religion that is permitted - under international law as interpreted by the Foreign Office, and at the United Nations - to claim the privileges of sovereignty and statehood. These are considerable: both the Vatican and its leader have immunity from civil or criminal actions for the damage that they do to others - whether by trafficking paedophile priests or by condoning fraud at the Vatican Bank (suspects can avoid European arrest warrants by staying within the "inviolable" walls of the Holy City).
At the UN, which has wrongly allowed the Holy See to do everything a nation state may do except vote in the General Assembly (where it is nonetheless accorded six seats from which to speak and lobby), the Church's advantages over other faith groups are enormous…
...At meetings to settle agendas relating to UN conferences on social or economic issues, Holy See diplomats have been exploiting their "statehood" to oppose the inclusion of any language that sends a shudder up their spiritual spine - "gender" and "gender equality", "sexual orientation", "unwanted pregnancy", "unsafe abortion", "sex education", "reproductive health", "reproductive rights", "contraception", "sexual health", "couples and individuals" and even "lifestyle". Sovereign statehood brings huge advantages over other faith groups and non-governmental organisations, which the Church uses to oppose the sexual and health rights of everyone and the rights of women in particular.
…But this is not the only illegitimate consequence of regarding Vatican City - or its government, the Holy See - as a state. As part of its "sovereignty", the Vatican claims the right, in all states where its Church operates, to deal with its priests and other "religious" under canon law - the set of ecclesiastical rules that includes disciplinary provisions for offences ranging from ordaining women and promoting heresy to having sex with children…

Gay Catholic Priest - Fr. Marty Kurylowicz
Charged by the Vatican for “Coming Out” March 1997 - For the Protection of Children – 15 years later &
President Obama’s letter of appreciation - 2012 Photo
...In March of 1997, I attended the New Ways Ministry National Symposium (Gay Catholic Educational Conference) that was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I learned [from Dr. Richard Isay's keynote address] that children as young as 4 and 5 years of age know that they are “different” not that they are gay.  It is only as adults do they identify this being “different” as being gay. However, the harmful influence of antigay social and religious norms -- in particular, for Catholics, the Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings -- are severe and last throughout a child’s lifetime, especially disrupting their ability to form long and lasting relationships. The harmful effects are not isolated only to these children who grow up to be gay, but also affect their families, siblings, friends and anyone whom they might consider special in their lives. They are a prescribed societal sentence of implicit isolation, which place at risk of suicide so many innocent adolescents and young adults. They stifle an enormous amount of human potential in the world that otherwise could be put to use for finding cures for diseases, offering better ways of maintaining peace among people and improving the quality of life for everyone in the world.
[After the New Ways Ministry National Symposium in March 1997, in good conscience I felt intensely morally obligated to "come out" as a gay Catholic priest to my parishioners at Holy Family Parish, Sparta, Michigan USA, to draw public attention to this implicit form of child abuse. This abuse is caused by the harmful influence of antigay social and religious norms, in particular, for Catholics, the Vatican’s unsubstantiated antigay teachings.]  (2010 USA letter)...
...Now, 15 years later, among the other questionable charges being used to remove me from the priesthood, Benedict XVI is also charging me for “coming out in 1997 and starting the Thalamus Center, an educational blog on early childhood psychological development...

My Perspective on LGBT Rights Begins with Children
Fr. Marty Kurylowicz - 5/10/13
...Children 4 and 5 years of age – know “different” - Well Before “Age of Reason” Nullifies the Immorality of Homosexuality
When I came out in March 1997 the focus was on the fact that very young children, as young as 4 and 5 years of age knew in some fundamental way that they were “different” not gay, only later in life would they identify this being different as being gay.  This point alone was highly significant because it threw the Vatican focus of homosexuality off of being entirely focused on adult homosexuals and moved it onto children in early childhood psychological developmental years. This switch in the focus immediately, almost in lightening speed, resolves major key issues regarding the morality of homosexuality, because this places our understanding of homosexuality, sexual orientation out of the adult world and places almost at the beginning of life - into the very early years of human development - well before the “age of reason” therefore; (1) homosexuality cannot be considered a conscious and willful choice to commit a terrible intrinsically disordered and evil act, (2) if not a choice, no sin is involved,  (3) there is no adult sexual acts of any kind involved at this very young age in a child’s life, (4) sexual orientation at this stage is about the natural development of human attachment essential for survival and growth of a human being, and (5) human attachments are about “loving another and being loved by another” there is nothing intrinsically disordered or evil about love. These facts alone nullify, renounce all the Vatican antigay teachings as unsubstantiated and instead they are labeled as being severely harmful to the lives of children in their early childhood years, something on the order of the ancient practice of “foot binding.” These are research facts over years of study that were available in 1997 and have continued to develop through the years.
This is why my “coming out” 1997 was not a big issue about me personally. Because my reason and focus for “coming out” was on the vital importance of explaining the research data about sexual orientation existing in early childhood, in order to stop the severe harm caused to the children growing up gay by the ignorance of antigay statements that create hostile and violent antigay social environments that threaten a child’s very existence. After I came out the focus was off me and almost immediately forgotten, as I remembered back then to Holy Family Parish, Sparta, MI, when I began to explain to my parishioners these research facts...

1997, Tony Blair,  Gay Rights, Homophobia, Benedict XVI, Catholic Faith and Process of Evolution - 4/8/09
Tony Blair’s decade in power is burningly controversial and seared with disappointments – but there is one cool, consistent success story that ran through his time in power: the rapid advance of gay rights. In 1997, Blair took over from a Conservative government soaked in homophobia. They refused to let gay people serve in the army or in government, denied us marriage rights, and even made it a crime for schoolteachers to defend gay people. As shadow home secretary, Blair had led the charge against this “parade of prejudice” – and as Prime Minister, he repealed these homophobic laws one by one.
These changes were primarily a tribute to all the ordinary gay men and women who marched and lobbied and campaigned for change. But with Blair, they were pushing at an open door, after years of banging their heads against a brick wall of Tebbitry. As he revealed in 2005 when he became the first Prime Minister ever to speak to a gay magazine – Attitude – some of Blair’s closest friends since childhood had been gay men, and homophobia represented “everything I wanted to change about Britain”. When he left Downing Street, even many conservative commentators listed the final toppling of legal homophobia as one of his enduring achievements.
Since leaving power, Blair has converted to Catholicism and set up the Blair Faith Foundation, which aims to bring different religious groups together. Yet he has not compromised on his support for gay rights...
...This process of evolution and change carries on the whole time. Otherwise, you end up pitting religion against reason, and that is the single most dangerous thing you could ever do. Because in the end, if you force people to choose between religious faith and reason, they will choose reason. But that is not, in fact, what should happen. Religious faith and reason are actually in alignment, in my view – or, at least, that is the argument.
But why do you think so many of the world’s most senior religious figures disagree? The Pope [Benedict XVI] said in a speech that ‘homosexuality is a more or less strong tendency ordered towards an intrinsic moral evil, and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder’, and even compared the tolerance of homosexuality to the destruction of the rainforests.
Again, there is a huge generational difference here. And there’s probably that same fear amongst religious leaders that if you concede ground on an issue like this, because attitudes and thinking evolve over time, where does that end? You’d start having to rethink many, many things. Now, my view is that rethinking is good, so let’s carry on rethinking. Actually, we need an attitude of mind where rethinking and the concept of evolving attitudes becomes part of the discipline with which you approach your religious faith. So some of these things can then result in a very broad area of issues being up for discussion.
That’s when I understand why religious leaders are very reluctant. But I sometimes say that organised religions face the same dilemma as political parties when faced with changed circumstances. You can either hold to your core vote, basically, you know, say: “Look, let’s not break out, because if we break out we might lose what we’ve got, and at least what we’ve got, we’ve got, so let’s keep it”. Or you say, “let’s accept that the world is changing, and let us work out how we can lead that change, and actually reach out”...

Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) had arbitrarily dismissed the relevance of “human sciences” related to homosexuality, which he noted in a letter he sent to Archbishop Hunthausen, dated 9/30/1985 (p 155, p282) that renders all his objections of homosexuality completely unsubstantiated. “Conflict in the Catholic Hierarchy: A Study of Coping Strategies in the Hunthausen Affair, with Preferential Attention to Discursive Strategies” by Timothy Peter Schilling 2003 Photo

...The Church is thus in a position to learn from scientific discovery but also to transcend the horizons of science and to be confident that her more global vision does greater justice to the rich reality of the human person in his spiritual and physical dimensions, created by God and heir, by grace, to eternal life...(this statement is completely unsubstantiated  -  there is no authoritative data to back it up - thus renders it Ratzinger's personal bias antigay teachings, however, not Church teaching - Fr. Kids Are Being Hurt!!!

“Someday, maybe, there will exist a well-informed,
well considered and yet fervent public conviction that
the most deadly of all
possible sins
is the mutilation of
a child’s spirit.”

…whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:6

Important note: No disrespect meant to Pope Benedict XVI or the hierarchy, the one and only concern is the safety and well-being of children.
