Silence, shame and sexual abuse – by Michelle Mulvihill - ABC Online

Dr Michelle Mulvihill has been working with sexual abuse victims and church leaders in the Catholic Church in Australia and New Zealand for the past 12 years. Photo

First of all we have an eruption of accusations of child sexual abuse by Catholic clergy in the United States. This is seen by the Vatican in general and the then Joseph Ratzinger in particular as "The American Problem". In other words, the Americans are "over the top" and therefore the situation is an exaggeration. The Vatican remains silent.

Hot on the heels of the American eruption is the outbreak of allegations in Australia and New Zealand. With the increase in hundreds of victims coming forward, some priests and religious going to gaol and others being re-posted, the wall of silence from the Vatican emerges again. Ratzinger adds to the chorus of voices and projects the blame on to the media...

...Joseph Ratzinger, leader of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith in the Vatican in the early 2000s asks for records of all cases against Catholic Priests and religious around the world to be sent to his office. He had sent a 'secret' letter to Bishops telling them not to speak about sexual abuse and to keep this order locked in their safes. More than 3,000 'cases', outlines of victim's stories, perpetrators responses, police enquiries and reports of "management" by local Bishops, arrive on his desk. Photo - Forbidden Planet
