Pope Benedict XVI has written to Catholics in Ireland who have been stunned and infuriated by revelations of widespread and longstanding sexual and physical abuse of children, and efforts of church authorities to cover up it up for decades. The letter, released Saturday by the Vatican, contains strong language but rather weak prescriptions that do not seem likely to quell anger in the once devoutly Catholic island nation.
Benedict expressed his deep regret for the abuses, and acknowledged that bishops and "ecclesiastical authorities" made errors of judgment, often out of a misguided concern for the church's reputation. But he does not propose any penalties for bishops who covered for abusers, and he reserves his toughest words for the priests and religious themselves who abused children.
