Family Acceptance Project™

is a community research, intervention and education initiative to study the impact of family acceptance and rejection on the health, mental health and well-being of lesbian, gay and bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. Results will be used to help families provide support for LGBT youth, to develop appropriate interventions, programs and policies, and to train providers to improve the quality of services and care they receive. Family Acceptance Project

Overview

Although there is an increasing amount of information about the risks and challenges facing LGB youth (with very little information about transgender youth), we know little about their strengths and resiliency, including the strengths of families in supporting their children's health and well-being. Even though the family is the primary support for children and youth, and family involvement helps reduce adolescent risk, there have been no previous studies of how families affect their LGBT children’s risk and resiliency. Prior to this study, little information was available to show how families respond to an adolescent's coming out and how family and caregiver reactions affect adolescent health, mental health and development for LGBT young people. Silence = Sin *** Bringing The Light Of Truth To the Darkness Of Hypocrisy – Church Outing.org

Help End the Cycle of Spiritual Abuse

This site was created to provide you with an outlet to save LGBT children from the hypocrisy of priests in the Archdiocese of Washington who engage in romantic and sexual relationships, and yet stand silent while Archbishop Wuerl and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops increase their dogmatic war against all LGBT children of God. If you know that one of the priests in the Archdiocese is gay, or having a heterosexual affair, please share your story.

Why Church Outing?

Every Sunday, for generations, hundreds of thousands of gay and lesbian American Catholic youth are told in church, they need to be ashamed of who they are and are deemed to live loveless lives as social and religious abominations. The emotional, psychological and spiritual pain inflicted on them by Catholic priests and our church hierarchy is more damaging than any level of physical or sexual child abuse that is quickly condemned in our society.

More shameful is that this abuse is being inflicted by men, many of whom are gay themselves, leading closeted lives of self-persecution and quiet desperation.

Most shameful, is that many of these priests, while remaining silent, lead dual lives filled with romantic and sexual relationships.

As America grows closer to establishing full civil equality for LGBT citizens and our families, the Church hierarchy's attacks against all LGBT children of God increases. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, under the directive of Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI, is meeting to issue a new pastoral letter to every parish priest, demanding they speak out against LGBT equality and to raise money for political efforts to deny recognition of gay and lesbian families in civil law… Read complete article and Learn more - Silence = Sin *** Bringing The Light Of Truth To the Darkness Of Hypocrisy – ChurchOuting.org

Catholics Bishops Put Sex Obsession Ahead of Social Justice Mission – By ADELE STAN – In These Times

First they threatened to take down health-care reform over abortion coverage. Now they’re threatening services to the sick and poor of Washington, D.C., over same-sex marriage.

They lead a church that claims to stand on the side of the sick and the poor, the meek who shall inherit the earth. But in the course of a single week, the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church proclaimed themselves willing to see health-care denied to millions of uninsured Americans, and to yank the social-service rug out from under the feet of tens of thousands of urban poor in the nation’s capital — all to serve the bishops’ obsession with the sex lives and reproductive organs of others.

The church’s week of shame began with the bishops’ role in creating the monster that is the Stupak amendment to the health-care reform bill passed last weekend by the House of Representatives, when the bishops refused to bless a compromise made between pro-choice and anti-abortion Democrats in the language of the bill. (Without the bishops’ blessing, anti-choice Democrats vowed to vote against the bill, so Speaker Nancy Pelosi was strong-armed into allowing Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., to bring an anti-choice amendment to the floor.) Finishing off the week with a brutal bang, the church threatened to sever its social service contracts with the District of Columbia if the city council of Washington, D.C., passes a measure legalizing same-sex marriage — a move that would throw services to 68,000 of the poorest and most vulnerable citizens of the nation’s capital into chaos.

This week in the life of the church, says Frances Kissling, the long-time Catholic feminist activist and current visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics, demonstrated the church’s "willingness to just be a bully." (Full disclosure: I worked for Kissling in 1998, during her 30-year tenure at the helm of Catholics for Choice.)

The Poor Must Suffer for the Sin of Same-Sex Marriage

Edward Orzechowski is the president and chief executive officer of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. At issue for the church, he said in a press statement, is that the committee drafting the measure in the city council had adjusted the language so that the church would be forbidden from discriminating against same-sex couples in either the adoptions it arranges for the city’s foster-care system, or in the employment benefits it offers to its own personnel.

Many of the people who work for Catholic Charities, Orzechowski told the Washington Post, hail from the LGBT community, so the church would be forced to violate its tenets if the anti-discrimination provision remained in the marriage-equality measure. Just so you have that straight: gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are good enough to work for Catholic Charities, as long as it’s okay for the church offer them a lower level of benefits than those conferred on heterosexual couples. And what of the thousands of good people who work hard jobs for low pay in the employ of Catholic Charities in Washington? What will become of their jobs if the church severs its contracts with the city? Photo St. Martin and the Beggar - El Greco

"It’s a dangerous thing when the Catholic Church starts writing and determining the legislation and the laws of the District of Columbia," said city council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6), chairman of the Human Services Committee, told the Post, only to receive this rejoinder: … Read complete article - By ADELE STAN – In These Times

True Marriage

It must be remembered that the importance and meaning of marriage is more than procreation. Two people pledging their love to each other is not just for themselves, because that is not a marriage. By being in love, two become one and they are better equip to be the best for everyone in world their families, friends, co-workers and beyond. In this way all marriages are contributing to the procreation of children by their enriching the social environment that children will be born into. MSK

With all due respect, we call on Scripture Scholars and related researchers of Human Sexuality to refute these erroneous statements, below, made by Benedict XVI and his hierarchy – the “US Conference of Catholic Bishops.”

Catholic stink pits religion against equal treatment of DC's gay families, and the distribution of taxpayer dollars - MetroWeekly.com

''The legal recognition of same-sex unions poses a multifaceted threat to the very fabric of society, striking at the source from which society and culture come and which they are meant to serve. Such recognition affects all people, married and non-married: not only at the fundamental levels of the good of the spouses, the good of children, the intrinsic dignity of every human person, and the common good, but also at the levels of education, cultural imagination and influence, and religious freedom.''

From a pastoral letter approved by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops on Tuesday. The letter says homosexuality is contrary to natural law and is under no circumstance to be approved. It makes a number of arguments against gay marriage, primarily that male-female marriages alone can produce children, and some amorphous use of the terms ''original sin,'' ''sacrament,'' and a ''communion'' between a man, a woman, and the Church, Jesus and their interpretation of God's will. Homosexual persons, it claims, deserve acceptance with ''respect, compassion and dignity,'' then immediately says gay men and lesbians should only exhibit chastity -- that same-sex relationships are to remain as just ''friendship,'' like with a ''neighbor.''

A recent report showed a significant decline in heterosexual couples seeking marriages within the Catholic Church, both here in the US and abroad, over the last several years. This USCCB letter also strongly criticizes cohabitation, the use of contraception, and the availability of divorce. It does appear to permit divorce in the case of violence, yet said that the Church could not recognize any subsequent marriages even in those cases. The Church and the Washington Archdiocese are currently trying to prevent the DC City Council from ending the discriminatory exclusion of gay and lesbian couples from receiving equal marriage recognition. (USCCB)

''The church focuses on the right to discriminate, but refuses to consider the effect on the couple. They provide these services in other states where same-sex marriages are permitted, I do not understand why they would not be able to provide them here.... I think it is important that we continue to have a discussion with the archdiocese and other churches as they wish. But I do have to say, the way this issue has been approached by the archdiocese in the past week was tantamount to drawing a line in the sand and it may be hard for them to show some flexibility.'' Lawyers Tweak ENDA Language - By Kerry Eleveld – Advocate.com

A House committee vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, was postponed so that lawyers could adjust the legal language regarding issues of disparate impact, double recovery, and attorney’s fees.

“Our understanding is that the committee lawyers wanted a few more days to look at several of the outstanding issues,” said Allison Herwitt, legislative director for the Human Rights Campaign.

ENDA would prohibit employers from discriminating against workers on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The legal fine-tuning stands to push back the date of the committee vote by about two to three weeks. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to see a markup after Thanksgiving and before the end of the year,” Herwitt said.

Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, lead sponsor of the bill, has suggested the full House vote might not take place until February of next year.

Disparate impact is a type of legal case filed against an employer with an employment practice that does not appear to be overtly discriminatory but is nonetheless discriminatory in practice. Herwitt said the lawyers are working to ensure that such cases will not be allowed under ENDA although they are allowed to be brought under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, or national origin… Read complete article - By Kerry Eleveld – Advocate.com
