Before all else, we want to take this opportunity to express that this is a very painful time for all of us as we witness the loss of life, emotional struggle and devastation that has afflicted Haiti, our sibling in the Caribbean. Like many of you, we are taking steps to plan how we can be of help during this time of crisis.

This conference will address the impact of government coups, war, and socio-political change on children in Latin America, as reflected by children's welfare, and their emotional and cognitive development. Historical data, clinical material, and first hand accounts of childhood memories during times of war, revolution, and government oppression will be presented.
