"Don't try and change sexual orientation." by Dr. Brian Mustanski - September 1, 2009 - Psychology Today

American Psychological Association says,

“Don’t tell patients they can change their sexual orientation.”

governing Council of Representatives recently adopted a resolution stating that mental health professionals should avoid telling clients that they can change their sexual orientation through therapy or other treatments. The resolution also advises that parents, young people and their families avoid sexual orientation treatments that falsely portray homosexuality as a mental illness or developmental disorder. If a family or individual is struggling with acceptance, the resolution advises seeking services "that provide accurate information on sexual orientation and sexuality, increase family and school support, and reduce rejection of sexual minority youth." Programs to change gays to straights don't work, report says – CNNhealth.com – August 5, 2009

(CNN) -- The American Psychological Association concluded Wednesday that there is little evidence that efforts to change a person's sexual orientation from gay or lesbian to heterosexual are effective. Photo

In addition, the 138-page report -- covering 87 peer-reviewed studies -- said that such efforts may cause harm.

"Contrary to claims of sexual orientation change advocates and practitioners, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of psychological interventions to change sexual orientation," said Judith M. Glassgold, chairwoman of the task force that presented the report at the group's annual meeting in Toronto, Canada. The Washington-based association represents more than 150,000 members.

"At most, certain studies suggested that some individuals learned how to ignore or not act on their homosexual attractions. Yet, these studies did not indicate for whom this was possible, how long it lasted or its long-term mental health effects. Also, this result was much less likely to be true for people who started out only attracted to people of the same sex."

In response, the group's governing Council of Representatives passed a resolution Wednesday urging mental health professionals not to recommend to their clients that they can change their sexual orientation through therapy or any other methods.

The group's Task Force on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation reached its conclusion after its review of 87 studies conducted between 1960 and 2007 and finding "serious methodological problems" in the vast majority of them.

Those few studies that did have "high-quality" evidence "show that enduring change to an individual's sexual orientation is uncommon," it said. Read complete article CNNhealth.com

APA Psychologists Repudiate “gay-to-straight” therapy

In a resolution adopted by the APA's governing council, and in an accompanying report, the association issued its most comprehensive repudiation of "reparative therapy" — a concept espoused by a small but persistent group of therapists, often allied with religious conservatives, who maintain gays can change.

No solid evidence exists that such change is likely, says the resolution, adopted by a 125-4 vote. The APA said some research suggests that efforts to produce change could be harmful, inducing depression and suicidal tendencies. Charities launch LGBT youth domestic violence survey – PinkNews.co.uk - August 19, 2009

Two charities are working to find out more about young gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people's experiences of domestic violence.

Broken Rainbow and Eighteen And Under have launched a nationwide online survey for those aged between 18 and 25. The project is funded by Nationwide Foundation and supported by the National Union of Students.

It will ask about domestic violence education in schools, whether respondents have experience domestic violence and issues around reporting abuse.

Broken Rainbow chief executive Rita Hirani said: "Research indicates that young people are at greater risk of experiencing domestic violence. It's critical that we work together to find a way to identify why this is happening, and find ways to provide appropriate intervention and support so our young people can go onto healthier and happier relationships."

She added that being LGBT can raise the risk of being a victim.

Laurie Matthew, co-ordinator at Eighteen And Under, said: “This survey will allow us to gather evidence about young people's experiences and their views and will help inform us about what might help prevent domestic violence.”

The survey is available on PinkNews.co.uk
