VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis again upbraided the high-level Catholic prelates who run the Vatican bureaucracy in an annual pre-Christmas speech Dec. 21, telling them to get beyond what he termed an "unbalanced and degraded logic of plots and small cliques" in order to better serve him, the global church and the world at large.

Francis told the cardinals and bishops who run the bureaucracy to not "let themselves be bribed by their ambition" in search for higher office but rather to act simply as antennae that listen for the "cries, joys and tears of the churches of the world" and relay what they hear to him…

…To understand the significance of homosexuality to the Vatican, one needs to know that a large minority of Catholic priests are thought to be gay and these priests know all too well the catechism's teaching that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered". Add this to the Vatican tradition of discrediting an enemy by accusing him of being gay, and the result is a sizeable number of closeted men in positions of authority with deep and potentially damaging secrets. By making same-sex acts a sin, the church moved homosexuality from being a simple matter of sexual orientation into the realm of conspiracy and politics.

The problem is compounded by a document drawn up by Pope Benedict XVI when he was Cardinal Ratzinger, which appears to mandate a life in the closet for the gay priest. Although it condemns homosexuality as an attraction towards "an intrinsic moral evil", men who have managed three years of celibacy are assumed to have no "deep-rooted" homosexual orientation. Canada Offers $85 Million to Victims of Its ‘Gay Purge,’ as Trudeau Apologizes

The Canadian government will pay up to 110 million Canadian dollars, or $85 million, to compensate victims of the so-called “gay purge,” decades of government-authorized discrimination against gay Canadians.

The announcement on Tuesday followed a speech in the House of Commons in Ottawa by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who apologized to the victims. The government program, which lasted for more than 30 years and ended only in the 1990s, caused thousands to lose their jobs and sometimes face prosecution because of their sexual orientation. The policy affected Canadians in the military, the public service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The government also introduced legislation to expunge “unjust convictions” from the judicial records of people charged under laws that criminalized homosexuality.

In a speech to victims and their supporters who had gathered in the gallery of the House of Commons, Mr. Trudeau apologized for “Canada’s role in the systemic oppression, criminalization, and violence” against sexual minorities…

…Spending close to an hour answering questions from reporters traveling with him, Pope Francis was asked to comment on remarks reportedly made a few days previously by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, president of the German bishops' conference, that the Catholic Church must apologize to gay people for contributing to their marginalization.

At the mention of the massacre in early June at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Pope Francis closed his eyes as if in pain and shook his head in dismay.

"The church must say it is sorry for not having behaved as it should many times, many times -- when I say the 'church,' I mean we Christians because the church is holy; we are the sinners," the pope said. "We Christians must say we are sorry."

Changing what he had said in the past to the plural "we," Pope Francis said that a gay person, "who has good will and is seeking God, who are we to judge him?"

3. …Only in truth does charity shine forth, only in truth can charity be authentically lived. Truth is the light that gives meaning and value to charity. I think I can explained to some substantial degree - the psychological and historical aspects of how the obsessive antigay violence of the majority of the men in the curia and hierarchy came to be and how they were picked for top leader positions in the Church, without having the proper credential to hold those positions. It appears to be primarily centered around how homosexuals were treated in any particularly social environment and the effect that it has on children who are growing up through their early childhood psychological developmental years, especially if they are gay children.

The situation is quite traumatic. There is no need to be judgmental, because what has happened to these men - could have happened to any of us. However, the situation must be remedied - immediately and not be allowed to continue, because it is threatening the safety and well-being of lives globally. The truth based on the dialogue between the science and religion on homosexuality - clearly reveals that the world indeed does not need to be protected from homosexuality. Rather, as the facts will prove that it is quite the opposite, the world needs to be protected from the forced suppression of a gay child’s sexual orientation during his early childhood years growing up gay. Instead, as Benedict XVI explains, the meaning of love in this regard has been so abused that it has been twisted around to mean the exact opposite. In truth, due to the complete absence of science - these are pseudo-teachings, they are in fact - an unconscious childhood traumatic reenactment of Hitler’s and the Nazi regime’s recipe for genocide formulated in the pseudo-science of ideology of Nazism. The men of the curia and hierarchy, though not all, from overwhelming documentation and their personal interviews - appear to have been seriously harmed growing up gay in antigay social environments, particularly during Hitler and the Nazi regime 1933-1945, including US Senator Joseph McCarty from Wisconsin in 1950s. These political leaders had built on the ignorance of societal antigay prejudices, such as - falsely claiming, without any factual evidence, that homosexuality is connected to pedophilia. They did this in ordered to heighten the emotional aspect of societal antigay prejudices to the level of hysteria. For others, who are not so completely dissociated from being gay - they will endlessly and strenuously try to suppress their gay sexual feelings and feel tremendous guilt, shame and self-loathing whenever they automatically feel physically and emotionally sexually aroused by the thought, image or presence of an attractive male.They were made to believe from childhood that they are indeed able to completely suppress their gay feelings, because they were told that those feelings are evil.

The truth, the reality of the functioning of a person's sexual orientation, whether gay, straight or bisexual is not under their conscious control, as it is under the control of the autonomic nervous system, the same as the heart beating or breathing. As very young children they were forced to suppress their gay sexual orientation that they had (1) no control over nor (2) any conceptual understanding of. This an unidentified form of traumatic child abuse the has lifelong harmful effects - these lifelong harmful effects are easily identified in the immaturity of the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy, the men who never grew up.

This included the dialogue on the topic of how to be more pastorally welcoming and supportive of gay people and to their families, which led to the discussions of valuing the committed lifelong relationships of gay couples. And as reported this human dignity and respect shown towards gay people created an emotional tsunami explosion that circle the global by the majority of men in the curia and hierarchy - though completely void of any rationale to support their reaction, including their adamant refusal to enter into any dialogue on the topic or to allow any further dialogue on the topic to take place throughout the duration of the Synod on Family. Cardinal Raymond Burke exposed himself as the fiercely defiant assumed position of the CEO - the highest-ranking person fueling and leading this unending outburst of this emotional tidal wave of this unconsolable unadulterated frenzy though completely absence of any rational dialogue from science and scripture. He and others acted - like a two year child throwing a tantrum - the anal expulsive stage of child development.

With Pope Benedict XVI in retirement - this unprecedented hierarchical explosive antigay tirade led by Cardinal Burke - took the spotlight off from Benedict, as being the sole instigator of this ruthlessly obsessive antigay crusade for the past 30 years. In fact, along with the Vatileaks 2012, the endless gay closeted sexual acting out episodes, the organizational structure of the Vatican was beginning to implode on itself, it exposed the magnitude of how pervasive this unison of this unprecedented hierarchical antigay frenzy defiantly void of any supportive rationale - was in the Church built on nothing more than the hysteria of repressed antigay early childhood memories that was controlling the Church. All this began with the societal antigay prejudices of their particular social environment that they were raised in. Not motived by truth or love - Burke and the others assumed the dictatorial authority that they can arbitrarily permanently suppress any and all dialogue on the lives of gay people, destroying the lives of millions of people, including children - all falsely in the name of God. Their assumed dictatorial authority over the lives of gay people completely void of the science on homosexuality - is a fantasy of their gay closeted collective immaturity. This most unfortunately is not a coincidence that will be explained later.

This is the shocking behavior that was being exposed at the Synod’s sessions 2014-2015 that has been in secret, behind the wall of the curia’s bureaucratic anonymity, running the Church with Benedict XVI being used as the fall guy. It does not appear to be totally willfully intended, as such by all involved. It is far more individually diversely complicated and is far from being a black and white situation. It is, however, a diabolical antigay fantasy though it is likely that it has never been perceived as such.

1. The disease of thinking we are “immortal”, “immune” or downright “indispensable”, neglecting the need for regular check-ups. A Curia which is not self-critical, which does not keep up with things, which does not seek to be more fit, is a sick body…

2. Another disease is the “Martha complex”, excessive busy-ness. It is found in those who immerse themselves in work and inevitably neglect “the better part”: sitting at the feet of Jesus (cf. Lk 10:38-42)…

3. Then too there is the disease of mental and spiritual “petrification”. It is found in those who have a heart of stone, the “stiff-necked” (Acts 7:51-60), in those who in the course of time lose their interior serenity, alertness and daring, and hide under a pile of papers, turning into paper pushers and not men of God (cf. Heb 3:12). It is dangerous to lose the human sensitivity that enables us to weep with those who weep and to rejoice with those who rejoice!…

4. The disease of excessive planning and of functionalism. When the apostle plans everything down to the last detail and believes that with perfect planning things will fall into place, he becomes an accountant or an office manager. Things need to be prepared well, but without ever falling into the temptation of trying to contain and direct the freedom of the Holy Spirit, which is always greater and more flexible than any human planning (cf. Jn 3:8)…

5. The disease of poor coordination. Once its members lose communion among themselves, the body loses its harmonious functioning and its

equilibrium; it then becomes an orchestra which produces noise: its members do not work together and lose the spirit of fellowship and teamwork…

6. There is also a “spiritual Alzheimer’s disease”…It involves a progressive decline in the spiritual faculties which in the long or short run greatly handicaps a person by making him incapable of doing anything on his own, living in a state of absolute dependence on his often imaginary perceptions…

7. The disease of rivalry and vainglory.[11] When appearances, the colour of our clothes and our titles of honour become the primary object in life, we forget the words of Saint Paul: “Do nothing from selfishness or conceit but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Phil 2:3-4)…

8. The disease of existential schizophrenia. This is the disease of those who live a double life, the fruit of that hypocrisy typical of the mediocre and of a progressive spiritual emptiness which no doctorates or academic titles can fill. It is a disease which often strikes those who abandon pastoral service and restrict themselves to bureaucratic matters, thus losing contact with reality, with concrete people…

9. The disease of gossiping, grumbling and back-biting. I have already spoken many times about this disease, but never enough. It is a grave illness which begins simply, perhaps even in small talk, and takes over a person, making him become a “sower of weeds” (like Satan) and in many cases, a cold-blooded killer of the good name of our colleagues and confrères. It is the disease of cowardly persons who lack the courage to speak out directly, but instead speak behind other people’s backs…

10. The disease of idolizing superiors. This is the disease of those who court their superiors in the hope of gaining their favour. They are victims of careerism and opportunism; they honour persons and not God (cf. Mt 23:8- 12). They serve thinking only of what they can get and not of what they should give. Small-minded persons, unhappy and inspired only by their own lethal selfishness (cf. Gal 5:16-25). Superiors themselves could be affected by this disease, when they court their collaborators in order to obtain their submission, loyalty and psychological dependency, but the end result is a real complicity…

11. The disease of indifference to others. This is where each individual thinks only of himself and loses sincerity and warmth of human relationships. When the most knowledgeable person does not put that knowledge at the service of his less knowledgeable colleagues. When we learn something and then keep it to ourselves rather than sharing it in a helpful way with others. When out of jealousy or deceit we take joy in seeing others fall instead of helping them up and encouraging them…

12. The disease of a lugubrious face. Those glum and dour persons who think that to be serious we have to put on a face of melancholy and severity, and treat others – especially those we consider our inferiors – with rigour, brusqueness and arrogance (having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities)…

13. The disease of hoarding. When an apostle tries to fill an existential void in his heart by accumulating material goods, not out of need but only in order to feel secure…

14. The disease of closed circles, where belonging to a clique becomes more powerful than belonging to the Body and, in some circumstances, to Christ himself…

15. Lastly: the disease of worldly profit, of forms of self-exhibition. When an apostle turns his service into power, and his power into a commodity in order to gain worldly profit or even greater power. This is the disease of persons who insatiably try to accumulate power and to this end are ready to slander, defame and discredit others, even in newspapers and magazines…

On Gay Priests, Pope Francis Asks, ‘Who Am I to Judge?’

ROME — For generations, homosexuality has largely been a taboo topic for the Vatican, ignored altogether or treated as “an intrinsic moral evil,” in the words of the previous pope.

In that context, brief remarks by Pope Francis suggesting that he would not judge priests for their sexual orientation, made aboard the papal airplane on the way back from his first foreign trip, to Brazil, resonated through the church. Never veering from church doctrine opposing homosexuality, Francis did strike a more compassionate tone than that of his predecessors, some of whom had largely avoided even saying the more colloquial “gay.”

“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis told reporters, speaking in Italian but using the English word “gay.”…

Pope Francis's statements on gay priests and same-sex marriages have come under intense public scrutiny. In response to the question of why he had not removed Monsignor Battista Ricca, whom he had appointed to a supervisory group at the Vatican Bank, he affirmed his nonjudgmental affirmation of the person and his willingness to keep him in the position— despite allegations that Monsignor Ricca had a homosexual relationship in his past. He has distinguished sharply between homosexuality and sexual abuse of children, which he has labeled as criminal behavior. His response took people by surprise. On the one hand, it represents a very traditional position, distinguishing between a homosexual person and a homosexual act and maintaining that homosexuals, like heterosexuals, could aspire to the priesthood as long as they were celibate. Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke is a man with a lot of enemies. The former archbishop of St. Louis, who once said supporters of abortion rights shouldn’t receive communion, became the highest-ranking American in the Vatican during the tenure of former Pope Benedict on the strength of unabashed conservatism. But as soon as Pope Francis arrived on the scene, that same conservatism turned divisive when Burke criticized Francis’s progressive policies.

For example, Burke, who headed the Vatican’s highest court of canon law, lampooned Francis in a Buzzfeed interview late last year. He said Francis had “done a lot of harm. … The pope is not free to change the church’s teachings with regard to the immorality of homosexual acts.”…

Last week, Cardinal Raymond Burke delivered a whopper of a manifesto in an interview with something called “The Emangelization,” which seeks to restore a sense of manliness to men in the church. In the interview, Burke offered a lengthy meditation on what he perceives to be the problem with the modern church. Most of them began, he said, with the advent of the women’s rights movement during the 1960s, which pushed for female participation in the Catholic Church. He derided it as “radical feminism.”…

While he directs most of his ire at “radical feminists,” he also appears rankled by ordinary women doing ordinary Church activities. To him, that act alone constitutes the dangerous feminization of the Church that has alienated, disenchanted and made men sexually confused.

“Apart from the priest, the sanctuary has become full of women,” Burke continued. “The activities in the parish and even the liturgy have been influenced by women and become so feminine in many places that men do not want to get involved. Men are often reluctant to become active in the Church. The feminized environment and the lack of the Church’s effort to engage men has led many men to simply opt out.”…

Burke didn’t just see the changes inside the Church. He saw it everywhere. Men, thanks to women wanting equality, were scared. “Young men [were] telling me that they were, in a certain way, frightened by marriage because of the radicalizing and self-focused attitudes of women that were emerging at that time,” he told his interviewer, Matthew James Christoff. “These young men were concerned that entering a marriage would simply not work because of the constant and insistent demanding of rights of women. ...Sadly, Church has not effectively reacted to these destructive cultural forces; instead the Church has become too influenced by radical feminism and has largely ignored the serious needs of men.”

And men had lots of serious issues, Burke said. Like addiction to pornography. And masturbation. “This is lethal for men, especially young men,” he said. “Young men may begin to engage in the sexual sin of masturbation. Men have told me that when they were teenagers, they confessed the sin of masturbation in the confessional and priests would say, ‘Oh, that’s nothing you should be confessing. Everybody does that.’ That’s wrong. These are sinful acts.”…

...Repression seems to figure prominently into the puzzle of pornography. In 2009 Michael P. Twohig, a psychologist at Utah State University, asked 299 undergraduate students whether they considered their pornography consumption problematic; for example, causing intrusive sexual thoughts or difficulty finding like-minded sex partners. Then he assessed the students with an eye to understanding the root causes of their issues.
It turns out that among porn viewers, the amount of porn each subject consumed had nothing to do with his or her mental state. What mattered most, Twohig found, was whether the subjects tried to control their sexual thoughts and desires. The more they tried to clamp down on their urge for sex or porn, the more likely they were to consider their own pornography use a problem. The findings suggest that suppressing the desire to view pornography, for example, for moral or religious reasons, might actually strengthen the urge for it and exacerbate sexual problems. It’s all about “personal views and personal values,” Twohig says. Archbishop Rembert Weakland, O.S.B., authored two columns that 30 are the equivalent of a pastoral letter to his people. He first recalls that the Catholic Church has been willing, even if hesitantly at times, to accept truth wherever it comes from and to integrate it with revelation. But often enough that has involved struggle. These struggles brought with them two characteristics: excessive cruelty to human beings and fear. "In such an atmosphere, amateurs—turned theologians—easily became headhunters and leaders were picked, not by their ability to work toward a synthesis of the new knowledge and the tradition, but by the rigidity of their orthodoxy." Weakland uses the first decade of this century as an example. The suppressions associated with the Modernist crisis "resulted in a total lack of theological creativity in the U.S.A. for half a century." The struggle for purity of doctrine, Weakland urges, "must avoid the fanaticism and small-mindedness" of past years of church history. He concludes by citing Pope John XXIII: "Nowadays, however, the spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity. She considers that she meets the needs of the present day by demonstrating the validity of her teaching rather than by condemnations."

There can be no doubt that Weakland was referring to the Curran and Hunthausen cases, for he explicitly states that the integrative challenges of today come from psychology and the human sciences and "thus the troubled territory today is sexuality.”

Weakland's message is pellucidly clear: we should have learned from history that suppression—the type that the Vatican is now pursuing—is no way to deal with the pursuit of truth (p 91 Theological Studies 48 1987…

Burke is ruthless and reckless with his delusional understanding about homosexuality - destroying people's lives and their reputations by projecting his own questionable sexual fantasies onto innocent men and then without any judicial oversight - judging them for crimes they never committed - they were only committed in Burke's mind. Burke's mental stability is highly questionable - he appears not to be mentally sound to be in the position of any authority. Gay adult pornography would NOT even be an issue - if gay people were never forced to suppress their gay sexual orientation and told that it was evil and instead if gay people were encouraged to form lifelong committed relationships with someone they fell in love with - the same as heterosexual couples are encouraged to do and that is celebrated in the Church. Gay adult pornography is a very poor substitute for not having a lifelong committed relationship. This is the open discussion that was to take at the second session of the Synod on Family 2015 - but through hysterical antics by people such as Cardinal Burke, who vowed to resist - caused this discussion to be canceled. Despite occasional instances of gossip and innuendo (e.g. Pietro Aretino’s suggestions of pederasty), there is no clear evidence of Michelangelo’s homosexuality or, at least, none indicating overt sexual activity. Indeed, Condivi claimed that Michelangelo was chaste. None the less, the physical beauty of many of his monumental male nudes, such as the David, the Creation of Adam and the decorative male nudes (Ignudi) on the Sistine ceiling, gives a clear indication as to where Michelangelo’s erotic interests lay. In addition, in 1532 Michelangelo met and fell in love with a young Roman nobleman, Tommaso de’ Cavalieri, described by the humanist Benedetto Varchi as possessing ‘not only incomparable physical beauty, but so much elegance in manners, such excellent intelligence, and such graceful behavior’. Tommaso married in 1538 and had two sons, but Michelangelo remained devoted for the rest of his life, dedicating numerous poems and several presentation drawings to him (e.g. The Rape of Ganymede, 1532). However, when Michelangelo’s nephew and namesake eventually published over one hundred poems in 1623, any suggestion of homosexuality was effaced by altering the gender of the poems’ subjects and addressees. John Addington Symonds‘s translation of a selection of the poems, together with his biography of the artist, sought to redress this suppression of Michelangelo’s homosexuality which, even if largely unknowable, was none the less a key aspect of his art…

…Michelangelo, on the other hand, still delighted in the male body and in fact had recently "come out" – let's stick with wildly archaic modern terms for 16th-century sex – in his love poems to Tommaso de' Cavalieri. So in his Last Judgment he painted male nudes whirling and soaring in a deep blue sky.

He was immediately accused by the new religious conservatives of turning the Sistine Chapel into a "brothel". Bigots called for his nudes in the Pope's chapel to be emasculated by painting draperies over their loins. Michelangelo was too eminent for his art to be damaged in such a crude way during his lifetime. But as soon as he died in 1564, one of his pupils was ordered to daub draperies over the Last Judgment's array of genitals and buttocks. Many of these prissy curbings of Michelangelo are still there. When the painting was restored between 1980 and 1994 it was a chance to remove the additions and reveal the full glory of the resurrected flesh.

The Church chose not to do so. In other words, it continues to this day an act of religious vandalism against the art of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel…

Vatican debate on gays provokes strong reaction from all corners

VATICAN CITY — From questions of welcoming a gay son home for Christmas to denying the sacraments for the children of gay and lesbian parents, an ongoing debate on the Catholic Church’s approach to homosexuality has raised the hopes of some LGBT advocates and provoked the ire of the church’s right wing.

…But with a rapidly shifting legal landscape, and a pope who famously asked “Who am I to judge?”, the debate over homosexuality is eliciting personal and charged reactions from all corners of the church.

The controversial debate was unwittingly fired up by Australians Ron and Mavis Pirola, the parents of four and delegates to the church family summit.

The Sydney couple told nearly 200 bishops about friends who had invited their gay son and his partner home for Christmas.

“They fully believed in the church’s teachings and they knew their grandchildren would see them welcome the son and his partner into the family,” the couple told those assembled in the Vatican’s Paul VI hall. “Their response could be summed up in three words: ‘He’s our son.’”

American hard-liner Cardinal Raymond Burke shot back on Thursday (Oct. 9) that children should be protected from “exposure” to gay relationships, which he rejected as “evil.”…

…Burke provides a sad example of a churchman who doesn't get or simply overrides the theological wisdom of human experience. By insisting that homosexuality is "intrinsically disordered," he aligns himself with other church leaders who have no clinical or theological basis for making such a judgment. Indeed, he employs a philosophical category that does not fit the human dignity of homosexual men and women.

…We can be thankful to Cardinal Burke for providing us with the contrast needed to see the understanding of human personality that may be the hallmark of Francis' papacy as well as of the synod on the family. The crimson-wrapped Burke is headed for exile on an island, the fate of a faux Napoleon who, thanks to the Peter Principle, has reached the level that matches his ignorance about and fear of homosexuals. …What’s more, researchers note that the rise in the number of gay priests from the late 1970s onward actually corresponded with “a decreased incidence of abuse—not an increased incidence of abuse.”

First of all, nearly every reputable psychologist and psychiatrist, not to mention almost every scholarly study, decisively rejects the conflation of homosexuality with pedophilia, as well as any cause-and-effect relationship. The studies are almost too numerous to mention. Pedophilia, say experts, is often more a question of a stunted (or arrested) sexuality, more a question of power, and more a question of proximity (among other complicated psychological and social factors). The new John Jay College of Criminal Justice study, called “The Causes and Context of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests in the United States, 1950-2010,” points to, among other reasons: emotionally immature and psychologically maladjusted men entering seminaries; the difficulty of dealing with cultural upheaval in which priests found themselves in the 1960s and 1970s; as well as, again, the issue of proximity--young men and boys were abused because priests were more likely to be working with them, rather than with young women and girls. But simply put, being a homosexual priest does not make one an abusive priest…

…Second, there is a stronger argument against the frequent conflation of homosexuality and pedophilia: the lived experience of emotionally mature and psychologically healthy gay men (and women) who have never, ever abused a child; are not tempted to do so; are not attracted to children at all; and would, in short, never think of doing so. The report notes that homosexual men began entering the seminaries “in noticeable numbers” from the late 1970s through the 1980s. By the time this cohort entered the priesthood, in the mid-1980s, the reports of sexual abuse of minors by priests began to drop and then to level off. Battling the 'homosexual agenda,' the hard-line religious right has made a series of incendiary claims. But they're just NOT true.

Ever since born-again singer and orange juice pitchwoman Anita Bryant helped kick off the contemporary anti-gay movement some 40 years ago, hard-line elements of the religious right have been searching for ways to demonize gay people — or, at a minimum, to find arguments that will prevent their normalization in society. For the former Florida beauty queen and her Save Our Children group, it was the alleged plans of gay men and lesbians to "recruit" in schools that provided the fodder for their crusade. But in addition to hawking that myth, the legions of anti-gay activists who followed have added a panoply of others, ranging from the extremely doubtful claim that sexual orientation is a choice, to unalloyed lies like the claims that gay men molest children far more than heterosexuals or that hate crime laws will lead to the legalization of bestiality and necrophilia. These fairy tales are important to the anti-gay right because they form the basis of its claim that homosexuality is a social evil that must be suppressed — an opinion rejected by virtually all relevant medical and scientific authorities. They also almost certainly contribute to hate crime violence directed at the LGBT community, which is more targeted for such attacks than any other minority group in America. What follows are 10 key myths propagated by the anti-gay movement, along with the truth behind the propaganda…

MYTH # 1

Gay men molest children at far higher rates than heterosexuals.

THE FACTS

According to the American Psychological Association, children are not more likely to be molested by LGBT parents or their LGBT friends or acquaintances. Gregory Herek, a professor at the University of California, Davis, who is one of the nation's leading researchers on prejudice against sexual minorities, reviewed a series of studies and found no evidence that gay men molest children at higher rates than heterosexual men.

Anti-gay activists who make that claim allege that all men who molest male children should be seen as homosexual. But research by A. Nicholas Groth, a pioneer in the field of sexual abuse of children, shows that is not so. Groth found that there are two types of child molesters: fixated and regressive. The fixated child molester — the stereotypical pedophile — cannot be considered homosexual or heterosexual because "he often finds adults of either sex repulsive" and often molests children of both sexes. Regressive child molesters are generally attracted to other adults, but may "regress" to focusing on children when confronted with stressful situations. Groth found, as Herek notes, that the majority of regressed offenders were heterosexual in their adult relationships.

The Child Molestation Research & Prevention Institute notes that 90% of child molesters target children in their network of family and friends, and the majority are men married to women. Most child molesters, therefore, are not gay people lingering outside schools waiting to snatch children from the playground, as much religious-right rhetoric suggests.

Some anti-gay ideologues cite ACPeds’ opposition to same-sex parenting as if the organization were a legitimate professional body. In fact, the so-called college is a tiny breakaway faction of the similarly named, 60,000-member American Academy of Pediatrics that requires, as a condition of membership, that joiners "hold true to the group's core beliefs ... [including] that the traditional family unit, headed by an opposite-sex couple, poses far fewer risk factors in the adoption and raising of children." The group's 2010 publication Facts About Youth was described by the American Academy of Pediatrics as not acknowledging scientific and medical evidence with regard to sexual orientation, sexual identity and health, or effective health education. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, was one of several legitimate researchers who said ACPeds misrepresented the institutes’ findings. “It is disturbing to me to see special interest groups distort my scientific observations to make a point against homosexuality,” he wrote. “The information they present is misleading and incorrect.” Another critic of ACPeds is Dr. Gary Remafedi, a researcher at the University of Minnesota who wrote a letter to ACPeds rebuking the organization for misusing his research.

In spite of all this, the anti-LGBT right continues to peddle this harmful and baseless myth, which is probably the leading defamatory charge leveled against gay people…

If a jet airline pilot in flight approaching New York City is emphatically ignoring the laws of physics - he would need to be removed immediately from the cockpit - regardless how many intoxicated (addiction) passengers are screaming in wild hysteria - “let him fly the jet airliner.” For the sake of all the lives aboard the airliner, including the intoxicated passengers and the lives that might possibly be killed crashing into New York City - this airline pilot must be immediately removed. Once, removed and stripped of his pilot’s license - we can empathically address his refusal to accept the basic laws of physics.

The Vatican is responsible for all of humanity. Someone like Cardinal Burke is the same as the jet airline pilot who disagrees with the laws of physics - must be removed immediately for the sake of the lives of all of humanity. Once, removed and laicized Cardinal Burke's delusional understanding of science or ignoring science can be empathically addressed and why he feels "We Have Arrived at The End Times." But as with the jet airline pilot, who would be permanently barred from ever flying a jet airliner again - it would be the same for Mr. Raymond Burke never to speak again for the Church as an ordained priest - the whole world is immensely larger than New York City! The Vatican cannot be allowed to be delusional (characterized by or holding idiosyncratic beliefs or impressions that are contradicted by reality or rational argument) and play recklessly and ruthlessly with the lives of all humanity.

(CNN) On a recent Sunday, a Catholic cardinal in New Jersey welcomed gay and lesbian Catholics to a special Mass at his cathedral in Newark. "I am your brother," Cardinal Joseph Tobin told the congregation, "as a disciple of Jesus."

Weeks later, a Catholic bishop in Illinois instructed priests not to offer Holy Communion or funeral rites to anyone engaged in a same-sex union, unless they had "given some signs of repentance" before their death. Bishop Thomas Paprocki said he has a duty to warn wayward Catholics, with charity, but also "without compromising the truth.”…

…Into that breach steps the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and popular author with a large following on social media. In a new book, called "Building a Bridge," Martin urges LGBT Catholics and their bishops to begin conversations rooted in mutual respect, compassion and sensitivity.

Those conversations can be difficult in a church that calls homosexual acts "intrinsically disordered," and, in some dioceses, fires employees who have same-sex partners or advocate for LGBT rights. One conservative website called Martin "a wolf in sheep's clothing (or a Roman collar)."

But Martin's book has won endorsements from high places. Two cardinals and a bishop contributed favorable blurbs, including the head of the Vatican's office of Laity, Family and Life, who called it "welcome and much-needed." Martin himself was recently named a consultor to the Vatican's communications team.

Martin spoke to CNN recently about homophobia, why gay priests stay in the closet and his message to LGBT Catholics who consider leaving the church. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What prompted you to write this book?

After the massacre at the gay nightclub in Orlando last year, only a few Catholic bishops expressed their sympathy or reached out to the LGBT community, and even fewer used the words "LGBT" or "gay" in their statements. That was revelatory to me. Even in death, LGBT people are largely invisible in the church…

One bishop, Robert Lynch in Florida, said that religion is partly to blame for attacks on LGBT people.

He is absolutely right. That doesn't mean that church teaching caused the shooting, but the ways in which religious leaders speak about the LGBT community influences the way the culture at large talks about them. Oftentimes it can give people cover for simply being homophobic, and they can use church teaching as a mask for their homophobia…

You call the firings of gay Catholics by church officials unjust. But aren't they causing "scandal," as the church defines it, by flouting Catholic teaching?

You could make the "scandal" case about a whole raft of people: people who are divorced; people who are divorced and remarried without an annulment; women who have given birth to, or men who have fathered, a child out of wedlock; an unmarried couple who are living together. All these things are very public and we chose not to thunder over them. That, to me, is classic discrimination. Either you require everyone to adhere to church teaching -- on everything, not just sexual morality -- or not. But you don't put one person's life under a moral microscope simply because they are LGBT.

Is there any theological justification for denying burial rights to a person in a gay marriage?

Any person prepares himself or herself to enter into the sacraments. So before we go to Mass, for example, we are hopefully in a "state of grace" and have gone to Confession. But to single a group out and target them with statements like this is discriminatory. No other group have their lives put under a microscope like this. None. It's like giving a homily at Mass and, rather than talking to all of us, singling out one person in the pew. And this is a group that has already felt marginalized enough. The place where they should feel most at home is often the place where they feel most excluded. And that is not the way that Jesus operated. When Jesus met people who were seen as on the outskirts of society, he welcomed them. The welcome comes first, and we're not doing that if we call people sinners before we even shake their hands…

A number of surveys show that many, if not most Catholics support gay rights, especially young Catholics. Do you get the sense that this is a generational thing, and that in 20 or 30 years the church hierarchy won't be talking about or treating LGBT people in the same way?

…There are two reasons for this shift. One is Pope Francis. His saying "Who am I to judge?" about gay people; his public meeting with Yayo Grassi, his former student who is gay, during his papal visit to the United States; his comments in Amoris Laetitia... And the bishops who Pope Francis is appointing in the United States are much more LGBT friendly.

The second thing is the increased number of LGBT Catholics who are coming out and making LGBT issues much more important for the church as a whole. At St. Cecilia's Church in Boston recently we had 700 people at a talk, and I stayed afterward signing books for two hours. LGBT people are so hungry for a place in what is, after all, their own church, and they are grateful that someone in a collar would bring this up.

You write that there are hundreds, if not thousands of gay and lesbian Catholic clergy. Why aren't they "out"?

Several reasons. One, their bishops or religious superiors ask them not to come out. Two, they fear reprisals from parishioners. Three, they fear it would be divisive. Four, they are private people. Five, they are not fully aware of their sexuality. And lastly, people have mistakenly conflated homosexuality and pedophilia, and so priests don't want to come out because they fear they'll be labeled a pedophile…

Peter Pan is a children’s story about - “A free spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mythical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys, interacting with fairies…(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Pan).” Nevertheless, the destructiveness of their collective immaturity fostered by this diabolical antigay fantasy has been global, this is in terms of structural violence, the invisible form of violence that ultimately turns into direct violence. It has brought us to the brink of nuclear war. This far surpasses the atrocities of Hitler’s and the Nazi regime. In fact, it is the continuation of these atrocities that took place in Nazi Germany between 1933-1945 that have been embedded in the very young children who grew up during these years and who were traumatized by experiencing the impact of these inhuman atrocities. In observing the dominant behavior of the members of the curia and the hierarchy within the Vatican - these inhuman atrocities are being repeated in the form of unconscious re-enactments that centered specifically on Hitler’s and the Nazi regime's exploitation of the ignorance and fears of the societal antigay prejudices of Nazi Germany.

Hitler, after he was appointed Chancellor of Germany, January 30, 1933, to gain the support of the conservative elites he appealed to their intense prejudices against homosexuals, by ordering the police closures of several gay and lesbian bars in Berlin to take place the day before the German federal elections were held on March 5, 1933.

The curia and hierarchy - their immaturity, especially in their ruthless obsession to suppress any open dialogue between science and religion on homosexuality has for the past several decades, as noted by scholars and theologians, impeded the free theological search for truth. They have succeeded in making the world a global closet for repressed homosexuals and for recruiting repressed homosexuals into the priesthood. They have sustained Nazi Germany's fear and ignorance of homosexuals thus supporting societal antigay prejudices to be exploited effectively as a political weapon. Pope Francis, July 29, 2013, nearly completely disarmed the exploitation of this antigay political weapon - in just five short words "Who am I to judge?" Though, these words of Pope Francis stunned and alarmed the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy, leaving them speechless, these words only served to heightened their collective immaturity thus bolstering their solidarity in their belief in their unsubstantiated antigay prejudices as God's will, excluding the science on homosexuality. According, to both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI - God would not negate the science of the world that God created. Without the continuous dialogue between the science of God's creation and God's spoken word - there is no truth and without truth there is no love. This is the atrocity of Nazism that had been embedded in the very young children who were traumatized by experiencing the impact of Hitler and the Nazi regime inhuman treatment of homosexuals 1933-1945 that these children as adults through their unconscious re-enactments of the same Nazis inhuman treatment of homosexuals has been seamlessly woven into the catechism words on homosexuality.

Exposure to traumatic events in childhood can have dire and long-lasting consequences, not only for traumatized children but for society as well. Green (1985) has suggested that “failure to master the trauma of childhood creates a continual need to repeat and reenact them during adult life”…There is evidence that childhood trauma is linked to later drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, and criminal behavior…Abused children may be more inclined than nonabused children to grow up to be abusing parents…Childhood trauma also appears to be implicated in debilitating adult anxiety disorders,…dissociative experiences, borderline personality disorder,…multiple personality disorder (now known as dissociative identity disorder), and adult psychiatric disturbance in general…

Unfortunately, the predominant view as late as 15 years ago was that children are generally little affected by the worst of experiences, and then not for very long…This view prevailed despite evidence from other observers—and sometimes even from supporters of the dominant view—that children respond to severe stress with behaviors that would today be recognized as symptomatic of posttraumatic stress…

And the fact that - no one in the curia or hierarchy cares about remedying this blaring rendition of the atrocities committed by Hitler and the Nazi regime or that it has not come into their conscious awareness - is another major red flag - indicating that they are repressed homosexuals. HIs past trip to Myanmar, risking his very life to reach out to the Rohingya Muslims managing to conceive the vast complexity of this intricate politically intense situation hanging between the life and death of people’s lives. However, as the Pope - he was like a skilled surgeon. He was able to enter in - contaminate no one with any personal biases, first, to do no harm, he touched the lives of these most desperate people who are need of our help and made a clear statement in their defense was breathtaking. Pope Francis stated that 'The presence of God today is also called Rohingya.' WOW!!! Thank God that he made such a powerful statement!

Now, that is what it means to a Christian. No! It is not easy!!! It demands everything that is within us - our whole heart, soul and mind to be attentive endlessly in preparation and in execution. It is excruciating frightening beyond belief, our focus needs to be centered directly on Christ and the job that needs to be done. There is no confusion here! Now that is what gives all life meaning - to be part of something greater than ourselves that we are totally involved in. That is the stuff that attracts and ignites followers and also that deters others. That is what it means to be Catholic!!! The Pope said he was initially annoyed that the Rohingyas were not treated properly by some of the event organizers who put them in a single-file line and rushed them through their meeting with the Pope.

Pope Defends His Myanmar Diplomacy: ‘I Did Not Negotiate With the Truth’

…After days of critical coverage about his not uttering the word “Rohingya” while in Myanmar, the politically savvy pope seemed eager to discuss what he considered the success of a trip that even his supporters had warned was a stumble into a political minefield.

“I am very, very satisfied with the meetings,” he said.

In his nearly hourlong remarks, the pope sought to explain his approach to effective diplomacy (“one half step back, one step forward”) and strategic communications (“the most important thing is that the message gets across”) and even offered his geopolitical analysis, explaining that someone had told him that the area of Myanmar where the Rohingya lived was “rich in precious stones” and that outside interests perhaps wanted it emptied for mining. “But I don’t know if it’s true,” he said.

He called the meeting with the Rohingya in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a “condition of the trip,” and opened up about the emotions he experienced visiting with 16 survivors of the persecution, to whom he vowed: “We won’t close our hearts or look away. The presence of God today is also called Rohingya.”

Aboard the plane, the pope flashed a defensive streak about his avoidance of using the politically contentious word during his days in Myanmar.

“If I had said that word in the official speeches, it would have been a door slammed in the face,” he said, using a metaphor he turned to several times, and which he said evoked for him the image of how an angry teenager vents frustration.

“It’s true I didn’t have the pleasure of slamming the door in their face publicly with a denunciation,” the pope said. “But I had the satisfaction of dialogue, and letting the other side dialogue, and in this way the message arrived.”

He is not given to the primitive defense mechanism known as splitting that is so prevalent among Burke and the members of the curia and hierarchy - demanding answers of complex situation that is either black or white, such as Burke’s frantic need for clarity regarding the dubia, including those who support him. Burke’s insistent need to have answers given in black and white terminology - exposes his immaturity.

Defense mechanisms are one way of looking at how people distance themselves from a full awareness of unpleasant thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Psychologists have categorized defense mechanisms based upon how primitive they are. The more primitive a defense mechanism, the less effective it works for a person over the long-term. However, more primitive defense mechanisms are usually very effective short-term, and hence are favored by many people and children especially (when such primitive defense mechanisms are first learned). Splitting, archetypally imbedded in a patient's psychic structure, acts as a powerful unconscious force to protect against the ego's perception of dangerous anxiety and intense affects. Rather than providing real protection, splitting leads to destructive behavior and turmoil in patients' lives, and the often confused reactions manifested by those who try to help.

Some degree of splitting is an expectable part of early psychic development. We see it in young children who, early on, press us to tell them "Is it good?" or "Is it bad?" We hear their frustration when we answer, "Situations are not black or white; life is more complicated!" "Yes, I know all that," they say, "now tell me, is it good or is it bad?"

Subsequent developmental advances foster the ego's ability to accept paradoxical affects, and to synthesize and integrate good and bad, love and hate along with the associated affects. Clinical data suggest that Kernberg's description of splitting as a defense mechanism is useful in conceptualizing the psychological consequences of abuse in childhood in certain patients. The splitting in these patients is similar to his description of splitting in borderline patients in that it compartmentalizes and sequesters certain overwhelming and painful ego states accompanying negative introjects of the betraying primary object and the betrayed self. These sequestered introjects, furthermore, act as automatons, generating behaviors that arbitrarily re-enact their content even though the patient remains consciously unaware of their historical meaning. What Cardinal Daniel DiNardo didn't say points to the wider leadership problem in the U.S. church

It was an odd statement that Cardinal Daniel DiNardo released following Capuchin Fr. Thomas Weinandy's resignation as a consultant to the U.S. bishops' Committee on Doctrine after Weinandy made public a letter criticizing Pope Francis for creating "chronic confusion" among faithful Catholics.

One would have expected from a cardinal and the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops a clear rebuke of Weinandy and a robust defense of Francis. That is not what we got.

Almost the whole statement was a reflection,

in DiNardo's words, "on the nature of dialogue within the Church." He wrote: "We all must acknowledge that legitimate differences exist, and that it is the work of the Church, the entire body of Christ, to work towards an ever-growing understanding of God's truth." DiNardo is clearly defending Weinandy's felt need to correct the pope.

We cannot but ask where DiNardo's plea for dialogue and understanding was when Weinandy, as head of the U.S. bishops' Secretariat of Doctrine and Canonical Affairs, was building cases against theologians like St. Joseph Sr. Elizabeth Johnson and Fr. Peter Phan and against the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. Where was the "Christian charity" then? To paraphrase the quote DiNardo used from St. Ignatius of Loyola, where was the presumption of the Christian neighbor's good intent?

…If any Catholics are feeling confused, it is not because of Francis; it is because of Burke and Weinandy and their ilk. They sow the confusion they condemn. They claim they want dialogue, but they don't. They want to be in charge and they are not.

…What DiNardo didn't say points to the wider leadership problem in the U.S. church. We are at a time of massive social upheaval on many levels.

…On these underlying questions, we look to our bishops not for answers, but for guidance, and we find them lacking. We look to them for accompaniment on this journey and we find them absent.

Francis, on the other hand, talks about how the greatest tragedy of today is a "spiritual sclerosis" and "sclerosis of the heart." He understands the general anxiety of our times and can, as a pastor, talk about it. He offers to walk with us. So, it is said that many people feel confused, but it is also said that Pope Francis is not the one causing the confusion. This is a complex situation that appears to have two main components. First, those who are claiming that Pope Francis is causing confusion, including Fr. Thomas Weinandy, former doctrinal chief of the U.S. Catholic bishops’ conference and Cardinal Raymond Burke are demanding that Pope Francis maintain a strict “black and white” adherence to all man made laws of the Church, separate from the Gospel of Jesus Christ and without any dialogue. Second, who stands to win the most by discrediting Pope Francis by fueling these unsubstantiated claims that he is causing confusion?

Those in the first group are attempting to control their worlds by the primitive defense of splitting keeping their worlds divided into neat categories of black and white with no ambiguities. According, to the above research - they want to protect themselves from the overwhelming anxiety of re-experiencing painful even traumatic emotional memories of early childhood. However, this behavior of splitting is mostly unconscious behavior and - it does nothing to protect the individual “Rather than providing real protection, splitting leads to destructive behavior and turmoil…”

It is “truth” that sets us free - not falsifying the truth, which only leads to addictive behavior, a slave to what is untrue. For far too long, not willfully, though nonetheless prelates like Cardinal Burke, have twisted the rules, laws and doctrines of the Church around to be applied in the narrow confines of “black and white” perspective to the exclusions of human sciences. This type of deliberate manipulation of Church laws is dishonest and certainly has nothing to do with truth - as noted in the Hunthausen affair 1980s described as the “Perspective Shift…tries to frame the discussion of Hunthausen’s leadership within one particular set of strictly intraecclesial perspectives (the perspectives of the “human sciences” are excluded)… (reference found below)." This type of "splitting" is addictive behavior - from documentation this type of addictive behavior has over the decades - attracted similar personalities like Burke and other borderline like personalities - as described in the above research - who have become dominant in the Church. They are not about truth. They have created the Church into something like an “opium den” or “crack house” filled with addicts who want to suppress the truth. They are running away from the truth about themselves - individually. We have witnessed the immediate outrage and hostility - whenever the drug of choice of addicts is removed.

Burke and the like - they viciously begin attacking Pope Francis claiming that he is causing great confusion, which is not the case. The confusion that these splitting addicts, Burke and the like, are experiencing is the effects of drug withdraw, the symptoms known as the DTs or delirium tremens (define as - a psychotic condition typical of withdrawal in chronic alcoholics, involving tremors, hallucinations, anxiety, and disorientation). As Pope Francis is gently applying the sobering healing ointment of truth - he is untwisting the narrow confines of their "black and white" perspective of life that obscures and suppresses the reality of truth that anesthetizes ( to induce a loss of consciousness.) them from feeling overwhelmed by the anxiety of past early childhood traumatic situations, this intervention of truth - in effect - is the removing of what has become for them their drug of choice - and they begin suffering onset of the DTs. They unconsciously are projection the overwhelming confusion that they are personally experiencing onto Pope Francis. But Pope Francis is only like a substance abuse counselor at a drug addiction - Detox & Rehab treatment center (detoxification - medical treatment of an alcoholic or drug addict involving abstention from drink or drugs until the bloodstream is free of toxins). Pope Francis is not causing the confusion - he is helping to end the confusion, turmoil and the destructive behavior that is caused by the overuse of the intoxicating and anesthetizing effects of the primitive defense of splitting.

The absence of the rationale to support their positions and their unwillingness to enter into dialogue on the topic - are keys signs of addictive behavior. Rationally thinking helps to prevents us from becoming slaves for the continuous and addictive need for the use of splitting behavior to suppress overwhelming - even traumatic emotional memories of our early childhood years. For Cardinal Burke and the majority of the members of the curia and the hierarchy - it is the complete absence of the rationale of the science on homosexuality and their fierce refusal in maintaining a rational dialogue between the science and religion aspects on homosexuality - that drives their need for the addictive use of the primitive defense mechanism known as splitting that anesthetizes them from consciously remembering any overwhelming painful emotional past memories, growing up gay.

He contended that previous efforts to monitor and safeguard Catholic doctrine have been undertaken in an atmosphere where “amateurs-turned-theologians easily became headhunters and leaders were picked (on the basis of) the rigidity of their doctrine, so that often second-rate and repressive minds, riding on the waves of fear, took over.

Are conservatives at high-stakes Vatican summit overplaying their hand?

VATICAN CITY — Ever since a Vatican summit last year raised the possibility of making the church more open to those whose family lives may not mirror the Catholic ideal, conservative foes have been in uproar, waging an intense campaign to block any reforms from being adopted.

Yet as a follow-up meeting this month has progressed, the enthusiasm of the traditionalists could be overwhelming their tactical judgment — annoying and even angering enough of their fellow bishops they may have weakened what was once considered a strong position.

Still, the conservatives may also have created enough disarray and disagreement to ice any significant moves toward change, or taint any proposals they may offer to Pope Francis when the meeting, called a synod, concludes on Oct. 25 after three intense weeks.

The most public, and, for the conservatives, embarrassing episode came earlier this week with the leak of a private letter to the pope from 13 cardinals opposed to reforms.

In the letter, the senior churchmen complained that Francis had set up this meeting of 270 bishops from around the world in a way that would favor reformers who want, for example, to adopt a new approach to gays and lesbians or find a way that divorced and remarried Catholics could receive Communion.

Several cardinals quickly denied signing the letter, and others said the letter they signed was a bit different from the leaked version, though they did not say how…

Moreover, one of those newly revealed to have signed was Houston Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, a top official of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

DiNardo’s participation in the secret campaign was seen as a knock at Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl. That’s because Wuerl is a member of the committee named by Francis to draft the synod’s final report — a group whose composition had irked the conservatives…

With all these twists and turns the saga was quickly becoming as absurd as it was convoluted, and it might have been seen as just another chapter in the legacy of Vatican intrigue that stretches from the era of the Borgia popes to the novels of Dan Brown — except that the plot seemed so backhanded it made the synod look faithless as well as foolish.

“The general opinion I detected among the bishops was a sense of disgust,” Bishop Marcello Semeraro, an Italian who is on the final drafting committee along with Wuerl, told Vatican Insider.

Another synod delegate, Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Australia, called the leaked letter affair a “typically Roman melodrama” that was “not untinged with psychodrama.”

The problem, Coleridge wrote on his blog, is that episodes like this tend to “aggravate the sense that the Synod is not much more than a political caucus, with ideological riptides swirling around us and the odd stinger drifting by.”

Already, he said, the deliberations are struggling to battle against “a fear that can become a kind of paranoia.”

“My reading of all this is that the ploy has backfired,” wrote veteran Vaticanista John Thavis. “I suspect most synod participants are not amused at this rather obvious attempt to pre-emptively discredit the synod’s outcome.”

The synod participant who counts most, of course, is Pope Francis, and he, too, was apparently not happy…

The one who appears to have suffered the most is Benedict XVI - growing up in Nazi Germany. Through, clinical and historical research of the life history of Benedict XVI, it appears he may have been suffering in his adult life from being in a traumatic state of mind, that is experiencing flashbacks to his early childhood years growing up in a social environment dominated with the violence of Hitler and the Nazi regime of their extremely irrational radicalization of racist nationalism the central core of Nazism. It has been described by Ian Kershaw (the world’s foremost authority on Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime) as fanatically saturated with national salvation tied to the pseudoscience of “racial cleansing” “the excision of its ‘life-threatening diseases’” inspirited by Hitler and “institutionalized in all aspects of organized life in the nazi state” was intrinsically self-destructive. …Not only the street-fighters and beer-hall brawlers in the nazi movement were attracted by the idea of violently-attained national salvation. Benedict XVI for the first, 18 years of the life - he grew up in rise and fall of Hitler and the Nazi regime. People hardly ever consider the lifelong harmful effects that a child sustains living through the wages of war. Had Benedict XVI never been assigned to the second most powerful position in the Catholic Church, as head of the CDF, we would never have known up close the variety of hardships, many that are unidentified that children suffer from being exposed the explicit and implicit aspects of the violence of war. This is especially true for children growing up in Nazi Germany 1933-1945 and in the devastation of aftermath the followed. There are of course studies that have been done on the harmful effects that war has on children. However, Benedict is an extraordinary human being in many ways. He was been international noted as a brilliant scholar, theologian by academic professionals in those fields of study, and from among people various backgrounds have found him to be dynamically inspirational in their daily lives.

I myself have been quite judgmental of Benedict, because of what I have perceived as his obsessive mistreatment of gay people, especially his exclusion of the science on homosexuality and lifelong harmful effects that this negligence has on gay children growing up, as well as, the hardship it causes particularly to the parents of gay children.

Professionally, both as a priest and a psychologist, I have worked with and listened to the stories of gay young adults from a variety of backgrounds, from around the US, including the intercity of Detroit. I have also given, as well as, attended lectures at universities related to LGBT issues. I have also been a participant at supportive LGBT organizations both on the campuses of universities and locally, as well as, including at the LGBT Catholic organization known as DignityUSA. I am well acquainted with the lifelong harmful effects that gay people suffer from being forced to suppress their natural God given gay sexual orientation during their early childhood years growing up, as well as, the violence they experience as young gay adults.

I have listened to parents of gay children, from across the US, those who are Catholic riddled with guilt from, first, subjecting their gay children to the dictates of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on Homosexuality, because they founded that what they were led to believe was the best for their gay child - instead, they were horrified to find that they were causing their gay children unnecessary and excruciating suffering. This type of revelation for loving parents is extremely devastating to learn that what they thought was beneficial for their gay child that it was presumed sanctioned by God - God’s will - was in fact lethally harmful to the safety and well-being of their gay child. And somewhere through this process parents agonize in any number of possible ways from feelings of guilt, betrayal and anger towards God, until like in organizations, such as, Pflag ("Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays") are they then able to openly discuss these endless feelings with other parents of gay children - often including a number of Catholic parents. Meeting with other concerned gay parents they are able to resolve their issues and find support and healing and connected ever more closely to their gay child or gay adult child.

A good part of my moral reasoning for “coming out” March 1997 - 20 years ago - was, first of all, of course to protect children growing up gay from the lifelong harmful effects caused by the unsubstantiated antigay social and religious norms that strongly contributes to forced suppression of their gay sexual orientation. But I also felt deeply for the parents of gay children who seem to be tortured by the fact believing that they somehow caused their child to be gay. And then to feel additional severe grief when they learn that what they were led to believe was God’s will according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church on Homosexuality was lethally harming their gay child. For me I had previously spent several years professionally studying the both the science and scriptural aspects of homosexuality - I knew the truth of the matter that these parents of gay children did nothing wrong that being gay truly is a gift from God. Being a priest I could not stand by and do nothing - if I was dumber - more stupid - like the curia and hierarchy were and still are - I could have avoided “coming out.”

I am no rocket scientist - but I sure do know what to do when people are hurting - you get up and help them anyway you can - with all your heart, soul and mind. My thinking was that if I could learn the truth of the science and scripture on homosexuality - surely those in the Vatican should be able to ace it that is master it. To say that I was upset with those in the Vatican, for their negligence - at the time, would be a GROSS understatement. If they had done their job properly - I would have never had to “come out” and parents of gay children would not be grieving and gay children would be much safer.

It was not until the arrival of Pope Francis - and his respect for gay people, including gay priests that was like a smoke bomb that drove out all the repressed homosexuals of the curia and hierarchy in an unprecedented emotional furry like a volcano explosion beneath the ocean sending a tsunami reaction that sweep over the entire planet. It was only then that I slowly began to realized that these men - themselves - were victims of the same type early childhood forced suppression of their gay sexual orientation that was related to the precise reason that I came out to protect gay children from.

As Pope Francis started addressing all the vital pressing issues involving the people who were suffering from the immediacy of life and death situations that I began to feel reassured that someone responsible was in charge being a true Catholic. And every complaint made by members the curia and hierarchy against Pope Francis revealed more and more about the personalities of each member and their collective problem being repressed homosexuals. The one of the best thing Pope Francis did was to encourage open dialogue on all issues “freedom of the press.” Previously, all statements that were made at the Vatican - led us to believe that it all came directly from Benedict XVI himself, while the curia members who truly made these statements hid behind the curia’s wall of bureaucratic anonymity. It is unclear that it was all willfully intended by members of the curia.

For the most part that abuse of papal authority by members of the curia has ended. Cardinal Burke disobeyed a direct order from Pope Francis last December 2016 regarding the Knights of Malta and condoms that no one was to be fired - everything was to be worked through dialogue. Well, Cardinal Burke’s understanding of dialogue and Pope Francis’s understanding of dialogue are completely opposite. Without any dialogue Burke fired the Knight’s Grand Chancellor, Albrecht Von Boeselager - on the charge of disobedience (https://cruxnow.com/analysis/2017/02/15/knights-malta-chief-says-burke-asked-official-resign/). Cardinal Robert Sarah on two occasions issued statements regarding liturgy that were contrary to Pope Francis and Pope Francis publicly corrected Sarah (https://www.ncronline.org/news/vatican/francis-corrects-sarah-liturgical-translations-not-be-imposed-vatican).

With Benedict XVI in retirement - the antigay hostility that was all hidden behind the curia's wall of secrecy of bureaucratic anonymity and attributed to Benedict, as well as, many other questionable and usually ruthless antics of the members of the curia had to a large degree ended. This was most obviously exposed at the time of the release of the midterm report of the Synod on Family October 2014 that listed the results of the open discussion on how to be more pastorally welcoming to gay people and their families, even the possibility of valuing gay long term committed relationships. Their collective - intense emotional outrage to the open discussion on gay people - exposed the truth about the incompetency of the members of the curia to be in the positions that they held, including their abuses of papal authority including though not limited to - the condemning of gay people.

With this wall of secrecy down - it helped to shine a clearer light on Benedict and many serious problems and situations that were contributed him no longer appeared to be true. My judgmental attitude of Benedict ceased, as I began to research his personality as related to his historical past and the likely psychological effect it would had on him.

The one single question that kept driving this research was the same one that has been annoying me ever since I came out 1997 - how come the men in the Vatican were not aware of the science and scripture understanding on homosexuality? How could the science on homosexuality that is accepted by all the major medical and mental health associations and organizations around the world stating that homosexuality is a normal and positive variation of human sexuality and that attempts to change or repress a child’s gay sexual orientation has known to have dangerous effects on the safety and well-being of the child - not even be in the radar range of understanding by the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy??? Surely, they cannot all be so stupid. Or can they be??? If they are - how did they ever get to be leaders of the Catholic Church???

Again, the answer to these questions is related to the same reasoning for which I came out March 1997. I came out to protect children growing up gay from the lifelong harmful effects caused by the unsubstantiated antigay social and religious norms that strongly contributes to the forced suppression of a child’s gay sexual orientation. From the tons of documented facts - the curia members appeared more and more to be victims of this same unidentified form of early childhood abuse. How did this all happen?

The through these years it would appear that he had been troubled with “flashbacks” to traumatic events experienced in his early childhood years growing up, numerous times. This is not unlike combat soldiers who after returning are suffering from PTSD. However, these “flashbacks” would appeared to be triggered by some emotional aspect happening in the present that recalled a similar emotional situation in the past but not the event that was originally connected with it. Benedict widely known as a kindly gentle mild mannered man was then described as 'God's Rottweiler.'

Dear Bishop David,

I received your letter dated October 2015, that included a request to set an appointment to dialogue with you. At the time, my commitments,obligations and lack of financial means did not permit me to follow through. Furthermore, the around trip from Canton, MI to Grand Rapids, MI would have been about eight hours. However, after seeking reliable spiritual direction I was advised to write a letter to accept your request to meet. In the process of writing this letter, I began to thoroughly research the situation, from the combined insight obtained from three professionals perspectives, as a priest, as a psychologist, and as a historian. Through these perspectives, I have analyzed the many ways in which I was a victim of antigay hierarchal violence, having no judicial oversight to appeal to for protection within the church or civilly. This is an unidentified form of structural violence directed not at me alone but also many priests, theologians, sisters, religious and others, including Pope Francis for the past four decades - all have been victims of this form of violence.

Structural violence, however, is almost always invisible, embedded in ubiquitous social structures, normalized by stable institutions and regular experience. Structural violence occurs whenever people are disadvantaged by political, legal, economic, or cultural traditions. Because they are longstanding, structural inequities usually seem ordinary—the way things are and always have been. But structural violence produces suffering and death as often as direct violence does, though the damage is slower, more subtle, more common, and more difficult to repair. The chapters in this section teach us about some important but invisible forms of structural violence, and alert us to the powerful cultural mechanisms that create and maintain them over generations…

One outcome of exclusionary thinking is the belief that victims of violence must in some way deserve their plight. But certainly it is easy to see that young children do not deserve to be victims…

The main purpose of this form of structural violence is to silence and remove anyone in the Church who openly discusses the science on the sexual orientation of homosexuality - gay people. This antigay hierarchical, structural violence has been successful in firmly suppressing this science on homosexuality for the past 60 years. In 1957, world renowned psychologist, Dr. Evelyn Hooker conducted ground breaking research proving that homosexuality is not a mental illness. She proved that being homosexual was just as normal as being heterosexual. For years the hierarchical church has rebuked such scientifically sound findings and have championed the obsessive suppression of gay people. Such actions lead to question who benefits from falsifying truth? The hierarchical church did not suppress the scientific research on heart surgery or cancer for the past 60 years. This vicious form of gay suppression is entrenched in the corruption of the curia in which speaking the truth has become a reprehensible thing. Through my years of analysis, I have come to find that the greatest harm this suppression imposes is on our children.

Truly I tell you, unless you

change and become like little children,

you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this

child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And whoever welcomes one such child in

my name welcomes me.

My “coming out” in March 1997 was all based on substantiated science and scripture. Furthermore, it was motivated to protect defenseless children. How did risking my life by coming out warrant such extreme vindictive retaliation for the past 20 years by members of the curia and hierarchy?

How did it get twisted around that I refused to return to the Grand Rapids Dioceses, when in fact, it was made clear to me that it was unsafe for me to return by their coercing me to acquiesce to being sent away to be re-educated on the science on the sexual orientation of homosexuality. They wanted me to leave the priesthood on my own, which would be another grave sin to commit. Since I had no recourse to appeal to for justice in 1997 - what recourse would I have available to me if I returned and more severe immoral tactics were used against me?

This tactic of the curia to dispose of someone was most recently demonstrated by Cardinal Raymond Burke firing Boeselager the Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Malta. Burke falsified a papal decision of Pope Francis that no one was to be fired, that the problematic issues with the Knights of Malta should be resolved through dialogue. Burke without any true dialogue with Boeselager stated that it was Pope Francis’s wish that he resign as the Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Malta. When Boeselager refused to resign because of “unreasonable circumstances,” Burke fired him on the grounds of disobedience. Sound familiar? Boeselager, then appealed directly to Pope Francis and an investigation was ordered into the firing of Boeselager. It was later exposed that the grounds that Burke had used against Boeselager were over “condoms.” However, this information was contrived by a group of Burke’s supporters known as “Lepanto Institute for the Restoration of All Things in Christ.” This group is described as a “militant traditionalist organization close to Burke (Austen Ivereigh).” “This ultraconservative organization specialized in the denunciation of "gays” entering the Church and in attacks on the major development associations that question unfettered economic liberalism (La Croix International).” On February 4, 2017, Pope Francis replaced Cardinal Burke as the Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and overnight all over Rome appeared posters of Pope Francis with a sad expression with the words - “Where is your mercy?”

It was the truth from science and religion that morally obligated me to come out for the protection of children growing up gay in March 1997. This was an act of love and my duty as a priest. It is the true meaning of being a priest. Pope Francis on Thursday, June 22, 2017 in his homily during Mass at Casa Santa Marta confirmed this fact stating,"The Good Shepherd gives his life for his sheep,” using as an example the parish priest of Barbiana, Fr. Don Milani, the from the Diocese of Firenze (Florence).

The research to find the answers to these questions endlessly kept unfolding more and more information that led back in time - more than a century and a half. The research doors were opened wide once Pope Francis was elected and he along with his team of experts, and cardinals began reforming the curia. The research revealed two main historical events that were dependent on exploiting societal prejudices against gay people to rise and to stay in power. The, first, began with the ideology of Nazism promoted by Hitler and the Nazi regime that led to the deaths of 70 million people unprecedented in human history. The, second, began the with ideology of the “trickle-down theory” known as Reaganomics that led to Globalization and the greatest inequality in human history - “A world where 1% of humanity controls as much wealth as the bottom 99% will never be stable (President Obama’s departing speech to the UN General Assembly September 2016).‟ Ian Kershaw explains what Hitler’s place in history will be:

…Primarily, as the inspiration of the most lethal and destructive war in history, and of the most terrible genocidethe world has ever seen. He left behind him not just physical, but also moral, ruination such as history has never previously experienced. He represented an extreme pathology of modern society. He showed us the most radical face of modern inhumanity – how an advanced society can undergo a breathtaking descent into modern barbarity that’s quite without precedent. That’s what, with the passage of time, we can see was historically defining about Hitler. Never before Hitler’s time had we seen so clearly what human beings are capable of…

…we shouldn’t mystify Hitler’s personality. The uniquenessof Nazism can’t be reduced to that strange personality. Another time, another place, and Hitler would have had no impact at all. He couldn’t have derailed a modern society without that society itself making a major contribution to its own fate… We shouldn’t be complacent about the future. New forms of fascism and racial intolerance rightly appal and worry us…

…what we can do is to remind ourselves of the essential point about Hitler: he represented the most fundamental and frontal assault ever launched on all that we associate with humanity and civilisation.

Over the past year and a half - I have been researching and writing 24/7, since I received your letter - gathering significant amounts of factual data on all three levels (as a priest, psychologist and historian). This research includes my personal experience of being a victim of the hierarchical, antigay violence. As it happens when I do research, such as it did when I was doing the qualitative research on the Holocaust in graduate school for psychology, it is only after thoroughly exhausting every possible avenue several times do all the pieces begin to fall into place like a jigsaw puzzle that a picture is formed.

The picture centers on the crucial importance for the safety and well-being of all of humanity present and on into the future and is dependent on maintaining an ongoing dialogue between science and religion. This is necessary to obtain truth that which then gives meaning and value to love. Without this truth formed through this process -

…Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way. In a culture without truth, this is the fatal risk facing love. It falls prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word “love” is abused and distorted,to the point where it comes to mean the opposite…

Benedict XVI - Caritas in Veritate 2007 2009

Pope Benedict XVI goes on to make the warning that “Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development…” St. Pope John Paul II made an early statement to this effect explaining how science and religion cannot be separated. He explains - as Benedict does that science is the study of all of God’s creation and religion is formed from the bible, which is the inspired word of God. They both explain how the dialogue between science and religion becomes a self-correcting mechanism of oversight, preventing abuse and maintaining integrity of both science and religion - thus allowing science and religion to guide us on our journey into the future. Both John Paul II and Benedict XVI are writing from their experience having lived through the atrocities of Hitler and the Nazi regime (1933-1945) that resulted from their manipulation and abuse of science and religion to invent a pseudo-science to legitimize Hitler’s ideology of Nazism and pseudo-religious terms to promote it. They experienced living in a social environment saturated in the racial ideology of Nazism - where the meaning of love was so twisted around that in actuality love meant the opposite. Love meant exterminating people considered to be less than human or subhuman - “Life Unworthy Of Life.”

With the recent election of President Trump we are experiencing living in a similar social environment saturated with the ideology of the “trickle-down theory.” This led to Globalization that was also legitimized by the manipulation of science and religion that twisted the meaning of love around to mean the exact opposite. In addition to Mr. Trump’s behavior, the Republican Convention 2016 slogans, “Lock her up!” (that sounded like the palpable hysteria of the Nazi Party “Sieg Heil” chant at a Cathedral lit Nuremberg Rally of the 1930s) and his being elected US president are all blatant examples of love twisted to mean the opposite. Both the rise of Nazism and Globalization were depended on the exploitation of societal prejudices against gay people.

However, in regards to rise of the “trickle-down theory”of the 1980s that led to Globalization - the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy are responsible for the exploitation of societal prejudices against gay people. The research of Dr. Evelyn Hooker and subsequent research completely dispel prejudices against gay people. Instead of the curia and hierarchy acknowledging the truth of this science - they manipulated religion by misusing the bible and continued to wrongly condemn homosexuality. Thus they twisted the meaning of truth around to the point that it continues to mean the opposite. They and their supporters are not about truth and therefore not about love. They are no different than the palpable hysteria of the Nazi Party “Sieg Heil” members at the Nuremberg Rallies of the 1930s. And this is the violence, their twisted meaning of truth - the complete absence of love, they have used against me and against so many others before and after me. Some of our best and brightest theologians and bridge makers, such as, Sister Jeannine Gramick and Fr. Robert Nugent. Gramick and Nugent have been responsible since 1977 for saving millions of people’s lives, especially very young children. To the best of my knowledge, they were the first to begin an ongoing dialogue on the science of the sexual orientation of homosexuality - gay people and religion - scripture and theology.

S c i e n c e can purify religion from error and superstition;

R e l i g i o n can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.

Each can draw the other into a wider world,

a world in which both can flourish.

For the truth of the matter is that the Church and the scientific

community will inevitably interact; their options

do not include isolation.

I came out in March 1997: for the protection of children, as young as 4 and 5 years of age, who are growing up gay. Since then it has become a moral obligation to educate and prevent forced parental suppression and unsubstantiated antigay social and religious norms.What has bothered me ever since was the fact that I found it difficult to find the r o o t c a u s e in understanding “how” and “why” and “when” did the meaning of “love” and “truth” get so monumentally - twisted around; notably among the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy to mean the exact opposite.

For the past 10 years I have been writing in an effort to explain how this mindless inquisition that started almost immediately after coming out in June 1997 - of being coerced “behind closed doors” by a directive from the curia conveyed by the bishop for me to acquiesce to being sent away “somewhere” to be re-educated on the science on the sexual orientation of homosexuality. This directive was not only shocking, but traumatizing as well.

This irrational directive from the curia completely negated the immediate need of protecting the lives of millions of very young defenseless children from lifelong debilitating harmful effects. It also negated the wealth of the authoritative substantiated research gathered from the major medical and mental health associations, institutions, and organizations, including universities. This was the reason for my “coming out.”

Through knowledge acquired during my studies at the University of Michigan and attending the American Psychological AssociationNational Conventions my research was reinforced on the science of sexual orientation. The action of the curia and hierarchy was a blatant affront, a direct attack on truth and love, as taught and embodied in Jesus Christ, of which the entire purpose and meaning of priesthood is based on. It was like a supervisor telling a heart surgeon that he is going to be be sent away on a sabbatical to be reeducated on the ancient system of medicine known as “bloodletting.” I cannot explain how twisted it sounded - to be told such absurdity!!! “Who in the hell is running this ship?!?” I was 47 years old at the time.

How did the curia and hierarchy cause a breach in the dialogue between science and religion that ended up twisting the meaning of love around to mean the opposite?

We will learn from studying the - science on sexual orientation that it is composed of interrelated biological and psychological processes that are not able to be consciously controlled or suppressed. These interrelated processes function outside our conscious awareness - automatically and continuously throughout life as part of the autonomic nervous system - like the heart beating and breathing. The continuous functioning of our sexual orientation - is essential in meeting our most basic human need for love, attachment, intimacy, through which empathy is developed. The continuous functioning of our sexual orientation is as vital to human survival from the beginning of life to the end - as the heart beating and breathing. Any attempt to force the suppression of a child’s gay sexual orientation is the same as suppressing the heart and breathing rate which can cause a number of lifelong adverse effects (persistent form of depression (dysthymia), suicidal ideation, and obsessive dislike for gay people that is implicit, to explicit verbal expressions of hate, to lethal forms of violence, and torture).

The majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy are European. They are the ones who grew up in the toxic antigay social environments left behind by Hitler’s Nazi regime. This begins to explain the long history of the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy’s collective obsessive antigay crusade. This collective thought suppressed all emerging science on homosexuality for the past 60 years. For these members of the curia and hierarchy the thought of gay science has been a long closed door slammed shut in their early childhood years. This was out of great fear from their witnessing the terror in the adult’s warnings of how Hitler treated priests who were found out to be homosexuals. As this trauma of the early childhood events are not remembered, only the emotional terror of the event remains. It is this emotional terror that is wronglymistaken as an innate guiding voice of their conscience strongly conveying to them that homosexuality is evil. This misunderstanding then becomes a force that completely obliterates years of scientific research on homosexuality. It is more likely that such scientific research ignites seemingly unending waves of unexplainable terror. That door slammed tightly shut - is the breach in the dialogue between science and religion on the issue of homosexuality. This is a childhood defense mechanism. It is the only means available to the child to stop the unending waves of fear. However, as adults, these childhood defenses must be reexamined in a safe environment - to be challenged in the adult dialogue between science and religion on issues of homosexuality. As Pope Benedict XVI explains, this is the only process to find truth and give real value and meaning to the understanding of love. I do not presume this to be an easy task to unravel and should only be attempted in a safe environment. However, this situation - is not unusual - it brings to mind the words of St. Paul to be understood with great care and empathy.

When I was a child, I talked like a child,

I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.

When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.

No, no, no this type of breach in the dialogue between science and religion on gay sexual orientation has to stop! Justice demands that I be exonerated and proper restitution be made for all harm endured, including the lost salary for the past 20 years to be made quickly. Not to follow through on this road of true justice is to continue this breach in the dialogue between science and religion on gay sexual orientation. Am I, like so many others, going to be made an example of what happens when a priest speaks aloud the truth? Will this be a situation reminiscent of Hitler’s regime to remove and silence Anti-Nazi priests? Are you going demonstrate publicly how an advanced society of people made a major contribution to the modern barbarity of Hitler and the Nazi regime by their complicity and indifference?

My moral obligation as a priest is to protect people, especially children.

I look forward to setting a time to dialogue the reality of this situation in the light of the warnings of both St. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI while maintaining an open discussion between science and religion for the search of truth that leads to love.

The hierarchy and Pope Francis - vividly validated the reasoning for the immediacy - why I came out in March 1997, as pastor of Holy Family Parish, Sparta, Michigan - for the protection of gay children, as young as 4 and 5 years of age - from the lifelong harmful effects growing up gay or bisexual - during early childhood caused by the influence of anti-gay social and religious norms. These lifelong harmful effects can be clearly observed in the curia and hierarchy fierce homophobic behavior - their inability to form life-long meaningful and fulfilling relationships, including their inability to connect with others, their lack of empathy for others, their over concerns about outward appearance, status and careers, as noted in Pope Francis "Christmas address to the curia", December 22, 2014. It is not only their complete absence of maintaining any ongoing dialogue between science and religion on the topic homosexual sexual orientation for the past 60 years, which is directly against the words of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI , it is also by their immediate emotional explosive outbursts to the 2014 midterm report of Synod session on Family - that listed notes of the open discussion that took place - discussing ways of how to be pastorally more welcoming to gay people and their families, including ways of valuing long term committed gay relationships. There was a lot of emotional outbursts among the curia and hierarchy, however, there is absolutely - no detail reasoning to substantiate their extraordinary hostile and aggressive reactions to the report. So intense was their fierce emotional reaction that the continuation of this open discussion on gay people scheduled for the second synod on Family session 2015 had to be canceled.

Sadly, one cannot, also, help to notice the enormous amount of the emotional psychic energy that is use by the curia and the hierarchy completely absorbed in an anti-gay obsession and the enormous amount of Pope Francis emotional psychic energy is used in reaching out to all people globally in nearly every situation in extraordinary effort to be inclusive of everyone, particularly those most forgotten and are in need of our help. Pope Francis has been relentless in this regard since his election to the papacy in March 2013.

Evelyn Hooker's pioneering research debunked the popular myth that homosexuals are inherently less mentally healthy than heterosexuals, leading to significant changes in how psychology views and treats people who are gay...

Hooker's work was the first to empirically test the assumption that gay men were mentally unhealthy and maladjusted. The fact that no differences were found between gay and straight participants sparked more research in this area and began to dismantle the myth that homosexual men and women are inherently unhealthy.

In conjunction with other empirical results, this work led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from the DSM in 1973 (it had been listed as a sociopathic personality disorder). In 1975, the American Psychological Association publicly supported this move, stating that "homosexuality per se implies no impairment in judgment, reliability or general social and vocational capabilities…(and mental health professionals should) take the lead in removing the stigma of mental illness long associated with homosexual orientation." Although prejudice and stigma still exist in society, this research has helped millions of gay men and women gain acceptance in the mental health community.

Dear Fr. Geoff Farrow,

I have been so saddened by Pope Benedict XVI's cruel words to LGBTQ people around the world, to their parents, families and friends, most ESPECIALLY TO CHILDREN. After reading the accounts of this human travesty, I did not know where to find comfort or hope. And then I thought about your blog. And just like receiving a wonderful Christmas present, sure enough I found the hope and comfort I needed to hear. Photo

I am a priest and a clinical psychologist (MS). And for one of my research projects I chose to do a qualitative research project of the recorded verbal accounts of survivors of the Holocaust, 50 years after the event. It was a difficult research project, because I could not make sense of one of the accounts of the survivors.

For example, one survivor was describing what it was like riding the train to AUSCHWITZ, but he was describing how he was trying to make conversation with a girl on the train. I listened and wrote out this one account almost 30 times but I just was not getting it. I could not understand how this man could be talking about wanting to make conversation with this girl on the same train to AUSCHWITZ!?!

Because I had taught high school religion classes for nearly 20 years, it hit me hard, like a flash of lightning. Instantly, all the pieces came together, so fast. Though this survivor was in his late 60’s when he gave his account of his story on audiotape, he was remembering the events that took place, but naturally they were recounted through the mind of a teenager, the age he was on the train to AUSCHWITZ. That is why the dialogue wasn’t making any sense. I was thinking of him as an old man because the voice on the audiotape was the voice of a 68-year-old. As shocking as a bomb going off, all the different aspects of the psychological developmental stages of a teenager kicked in. I realized only too fully that he was just a young normal teenager on that train!!! And so was the girl he was trying to make conversation, and their moms and dads were there with them!!! There was no way to pretend I did not realize what I discovered. It kept hitting me: this is not some script from a movie or TV miniseries on the Holocaust. No; as much as I wished it were. The reality of this horror hit me all at once, on so many different levels of consciousness: what an unbelievable horror it was!!! How could we treat human beings like this! I remember when the realization of the magnitude of this horror first hit me, like an instant reflex. I threw down the transcript I was holding as if it were a blazing hot poker. It kept hitting me over and over again that this is not a movie script or some kind of play – this really happened! It really happened! Oh, my God, how could this have happened!?!!!

My supervisor told me at the time that I was traumatized by the oral content. Qualitative research is an attempt to understand the complexity of emotions, the kinds of emotions, and the degree of intensity involved. Our emotions are what allow us to connect with other human beings. We identify with the non-verbal quality of emotions more immediately and strongly than with the words used to express them. The non-verbal qualities include tone of voice, eye contact, facial expression, body posture, and gestures, all of which express emotions. Emotions are why we can connect with people through time, across cultures, and individually. It is the expression of human emotions in the arts that makes some works of art timeless, because they continually speak to all people through the ages.

And when I heard what Pope Benedict XVI said about homosexuals and transgendered human beings at Christmas 2008, I felt that same trauma all over again. Because in some way, somehow, he was conveying in a non-verbal manner the horror of the Holocaust, in what appears to be a traumatized, trance-like, accepted social norm from that period of time dictating that some people just don’t count, aren’t important, and can be easily disposed of. And if you rock the boat, you could be next to be disposed of.

I truly have to believe that a person in his position would not be doing this consciously or intentionally. The horror of the Holocaust is like an atomic bomb with fallout so extensive that it spreads over a radius of more than 150 miles. The horror of the Holocaust began in 1933 and ended in 1945. The psychological fallout would have been far more extensive and more deadly, especially when it is notidentified as such.

It hit me the way it did when I realized that the research I was doing about a Holocaust survivor, a man 68 years old telling his story, who was remembering what it was like to be on the train to AUSCHWITZ, from the perspective of a young teenage boy who just wanted to talk to a girl. It seemed like the same kind of horror, a tacit assumption that some people don't count and can be disposed of without remorse. Could it be that Benedict XVI is unconsciously repeating Hitler's crime against humanity by taking on a long-accepted social attitude from that period of time?

The question I asked myself was: what would it have been like for someone growing up gay during the Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933 -1945?

What would be the severity of the psychological effects on a boy who grew up to be gay in Germany during the time of Hitler’s NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS 1933 -1945? During the Nazi regime, homosexuals were publicly defamed and falsely accused for the major social problems of that time, which was done to incite massive public hatred and hostility directed against homosexuals. Homosexuals were used for medical experiments, physically mutilated, brutally tortured and exterminated.

Would this child, as an adult, in a severe dissociated state of mind from his own homosexual feelings (Harry Stack Sullivan MD, Dissociative Processes, Clinical Studies on Psychiatry (1956)), unconsciously perpetuate the terrifying horror of the insensitivity he had experienced growing up? If he found himself in a position of authority would he recreate the same social and political environment of violence and terror for homosexuals that he experienced, as a child who grew up to be gay, during the NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS?

I think in truth on a much deeper level I was frightened, really frightened, to hear Pope Benedict XVI’s Christmas remarks against homosexuals and transgendered human beings and even more frightened by the silence from the larger global community of human beings. What is so frightening is, even if there is agreement that one person does not matter or is not important, in truth then no one matters. Therefore, when I thought about your blog and what you did on October 5, 2008, I felt more reassured, I felt hope, and I felt comforted. NOW, isn’t that the true meaning of Christmas?
