How can you

AUSCHWITZ - CHRISTMAS 2008 - A flashback far more severe than in
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
December 26, 2008 – Fr. Marty Kurylowicz
Dear Fr. Geoff Farrow,
I have been so saddened by Pope Benedict XVI's cruel words to LGBTQ people around the world, to their parents, families and friends, most ESPECIALLY TO CHILDREN. After reading the accounts of this human travesty, I did not know where to find comfort or hope. And then I thought about your blog. And just like receiving a wonderful Christmas present, sure enough I found the hope and comfort I needed to hear. Photo
I am a priest and a clinical psychologist (MS). And for one of my research projects I chose to do a qualitative research project of the recorded verbal accounts of survivors of the Holocaust, 50 years after the event. It was a difficult research project, because I could not make sense of one of the accounts of the survivors.
For example, one survivor was describing what it was like riding the train to AUSCHWITZ, but he was describing how he was trying to make conversation with a girl on the train. I listened and wrote out this one account almost 30 times but I just was not getting it. I could not understand how this man could be talking about wanting to make conversation with this girl on the same train to AUSCHWITZ!?!
Because I had taught high school religion classes for nearly 20 years, it hit me hard, like a flash of lightning. Instantly, all the pieces came together, so fast. Though this survivor was in his late 60’s when he gave his account of his story on audiotape, he was remembering the events that took place, but naturally they were recounted through the mind of a teenager, the age he was on the train to AUSCHWITZ. That is why the dialogue wasn’t making any sense. I was thinking of him as an old man because the voice on the audiotape was the voice of a 68-year-old. As shocking as a bomb going off, all the different aspects of the psychological developmental stages of a teenager kicked in. I realized only too fully that he was just a young normal teenager on that train!!! And so was the girl he was trying to make conversation, and their moms and dads were there with them!!! There was no way to pretend I did not realize what I discovered. It kept hitting me: this is not some script from a movie or TV miniseries on the Holocaust. No; as much as I wished it were. The reality of this horror hit me all at once, on so many different levels of consciousness: what an unbelievable horror it was!!! How could we treat human beings like this! I remember when the realization of the magnitude of this horror first hit me, like an instant reflex. I threw down the transcript I was holding as if it were a blazing hot poker. It kept hitting me over and over again that this is not a movie script or some kind of play – this really happened! It really happened! Oh, my God, how could this have happened!?!!!
My supervisor told me at the time that I was traumatized by the oral content. Qualitative research is an attempt to understand the complexity of emotions, the kinds of emotions, and the degree of intensity involved. Our emotions are what allow us to connect with other human beings. We identify with the non-verbal quality of emotions more immediately and strongly than with the words used to express them. The non-verbal qualities include tone of voice, eye contact, facial expression, body posture, and gestures, all of which express emotions. Emotions are why we can connect with people through time, across cultures, and individually. It is the expression of human emotions in the arts that makes some works of art timeless, because they continually speak to all people through the ages.
And when I heard what Pope Benedict XVI said about homosexuals and transgendered human beings at Christmas 2008, I felt that same trauma all over again. Because in some way, somehow, he was conveying in a non-verbal manner the horror of the Holocaust, in what appears to be a traumatized, trance-like, accepted social norm from that period of time dictating that some people just don’t count, aren’t important, and can be easily disposed of. And if you rock the boat, you could be next to be disposed of.
I truly have to believe that a person in his position would not be doing this consciously or intentionally. The horror of the Holocaust is like an atomic bomb with fallout so extensive that it spreads over a radius of more than 150 miles. The horror of the Holocaust began in 1933 and ended in 1945. The psychological fallout would have been far more extensive and more deadly, especially when it is not identified as such.
It hit me the way it did when I realized that the research I was doing about a Holocaust survivor, a man 68 years old telling his story, who was remembering what it was like to be on the train to AUSCHWITZ, from the perspective of a young teenage boy who just wanted to talk to a girl. It seemed like the same kind of horror, a tacit assumption that some people don't count and can be disposed of without remorse. Could it be that Benedict XVI is unconsciously repeating Hitler's crime against humanity by taking on a long-accepted social attitude from that period of time?
The question I asked myself was: what would it have been like for someone growing up gay during the Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933 -1945?
What would be the severity of the psychological effects on a boy who grew up to be gay in Germany during the time of Hitler’s NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS 1933 -1945? During the Nazi regime, homosexuals were publicly defamed and falsely accused for the major social problems of that time, which was done to incite massive public hatred and hostility directed against homosexuals. Homosexuals were used for medical experiments, physically mutilated, brutally tortured and exterminated.
Would this child, as an adult, in a severe dissociated state of mind from his own homosexual feelings (Harry Stack Sullivan MD, Dissociative Processes, Clinical Studies on Psychiatry (1956)), unconsciously perpetuate the terrifying horror of the insensitivity he had experienced growing up? If he found himself in a position of authority would he recreate the same social and political environment of violence and terror for homosexuals that he experienced, as a child who grew up to be gay, during the NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS?
I think in truth on a much deeper level I was frightened, really frightened, to hear Pope Benedict XVI’s Christmas remarks against homosexuals and transgendered human beings and even more frightened by the silence from the larger global community of human beings. What is so frightening is, even if there is agreement that one person does not matter or is not important, in truth then no one matters. Therefore, when I thought about your blog and what you did on October 5, 2008, I felt more reassured, I felt hope, and I felt comforted. NOW, isn’t that the true meaning of Christmas?
God Bless you,

In the past 61 years, after Evelyn Hooker released her ground breaking research "The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual” 1957 that was internationally accepted - proving that homosexuality is not a mental disorder, as there was no detectable difference between homosexual and heterosexual men in terms of mental adjustment, within these past 6 decades NOT ONE MEMBER of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy had or has an authoritative accredited graduate degree in the science of human sexuality, in particular in the science of the sexual orientation of homosexuality.

Pope Benedict XVI 2007 2009
This breach destroys truth and without truth - love is emptied of its value and meaning. The meaning of love is then arbitrarily twisted that it comes to mean the opposite - CARITAS IN VERITATE, Pope Benedict XVI:
Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way. In a culture without truth, this is the fatal risk facing love. It falls prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word “love” is abused and distorted, to the point where it comes to mean the opposite. Truth frees charity from the constraints of an emotionalism that deprives it of relational and social content, and of a fideism that deprives it of human and universal breathing-space…
This renders such terms as “DEEP-SEATED HOMOSEXUAL TENDENCIES” and “INTRINSICALLY DISORDERED” used to describe homosexuality has in fact fallen “prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word “love” is abused and distorted, to the point where it comes to mean the opposite.” These terms are the subjective projections of an individual’s internal anxious state over unwanted sexual impulses being relieved by attributing them to another person.
Projection
When an internal impulse provokes too much anxiety, the ego may reduce that anxiety by attributing the unwanted impulse to an external object, usually another person. This is the defense mechanism of projection, which can be defined as seeing in others unacceptable feelings or tendencies that actually reside in one’s own unconscious (Freud, 1915/1957b)…
An extreme type of projection is paranoia, a mental disorder characterized by powerful delusions of jealousy and persecution. Paranoia is not an inevitable outcome of projection but simply a severe variety of it. According to Freud (1922/1955), a crucial distinction between projection and paranoia is that paranoia is always characterized by repressed homosexual feelings toward the persecutor. Freud believed that the persecutor is inevitably a former friend [sibling] of the same sex…When homosexual impulses become too powerful, persecuted paranoiacs defend themselves by reversing these feelings and the projecting them onto their original object [a former friend [sibling] of the same sex]. For men, the transformation proceeds as follows. Instead of saying, “I love him,” the paranoid person says, “I hate him.” Because this also produces too much anxiety, he says, “He hates me.” At this point, the person has disclaimed all responsibility and can say, “I like him fine, but he’s got it in for me.” The central mechanism in all paranoia is projection with accompanying delusions of jealousy and persecution…

How the Sistine Chapel spawned a public relations nightmare
Jan 26, 2016 - IDEAS.TED.COM
When Michelangelo’s ambitious paintings premiered in the sixteenth century, they touched off a very modern-sounding social media scandal, says art historian Elizabeth Lev.
It was called a “sin,” a “stew of nudes” that could “weaken the faith of others.” In the years following the debut of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel paintings in the mid-1500s, a torrent of complaints about the works’ rampant, joyful nudity rocked the global Catholic Church.
The criticism — from patrons, critics and even popes — may sound like the last gasps of Medieval prudishness, but to Vatican Museums art historian Elizabeth Lev (TED Talk: The unheard story behind the Sistine Chapel), the Sistine Chapel scandal marked a new era of viral opinion-making, powered by Europe’s growing crop of printing presses. And like the latest “hot take” from the TV news, these reactions were often shaped by an echo chamber of critics. The unveiling of the artwork of the Sistine Chapel, Lev says, has all the familiar beats of the modern-day social media scandal…
One artful critic can inflame a continent.
“The guy who really gets all of this started,” says Lev, “he’s quite the troublemaker, is a man named Pietro Aretino. He’s got a great turn of phrase, he’s funny.” Aretino could also be downright ferocious in his critique of Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment wall fresco, writing that it “makes such a genuine spectacle out of both the lack of decorum in the martyrs and the virgins, and the gesture of the man grabbed by his genitals, that even in a brothel, these eyes would shut so as not to see it. It would be less of a sin for you not to believe than by believing in this manner, to weaken the faith of others.” Incidentally, Aretino had his own kinks, Lev says. “Aretino is a famous, and I mean famous, writer of pornography.”…
A sly response to all would-be censors.
It seems Michelangelo weathered the scandal in silence. At least there’s no record of his response in the printed materials from that period, though he did use his painting to take a subtle strike at one of his critics, the papal courtier Biagio da Cesena.“We see Michelangelo lose his temper for a second and paint in the guy at Minos the judge of Hell.” The demon is depicted with its tail wrapped twice around Cesena. “So if you have the tail wrapped around your waist twice, it means you’re going to Hell for being lustful, and doesn’t that suggest to you that what Michelangelo was proposing is that if you look at this painting and all you can see are naked bodies, and all you can see is pornography, the problem is you, not me?”…

Why Fig Leaves Cover the Private Parts of Classical Sculptures
Alexxa Gotthardt
Apr 5, 2018
Consider the fig leaf: a little piece of foliage that’s shielded the genitals of famous biblical figures and nude sculptures for centuries. It’s a plant that’s become synonymous with sin, sex, and censorship. And in large part, we have art history—and the artists determined to portray nudity even when it was considered taboo—to thank for that.
Take Michelangelo’s famous sculpture David (1501–04), a muscular, starkly naked depiction of its namesake biblical hero. The work scandalized the artist’s fellow Florentines and the Catholic clergy when unveiled in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria in 1504. Soon after, the figure’s sculpted phallus was girdled with a garland of bronze fig leaves by authorities.
60 years later, just months before Michelangelo’s death, the Catholic Church issued an edict demanding that “figures shall not be painted or adorned with a beauty exciting…lust.” The clergy began a crusade to camouflage the pensises and pubic hair visible in artworks across Italy. Their coverups of choice? Loincloths, foliage, and—most often—fig leaves. It has became known as the “Fig Leaf Campaign,” one of history’s most significant acts of art censorship…
…These passionate criticisms effectively launched the Fig Leaf Campaign, which was formalized in the Council of Trent’s 1563 decree banning “all lasciviousness” in religious imagery. Nude sculptures across Italy, and especially in Rome, soon sported carefully placed metal fig leaves. Some scholars have suggested that many of the plaster and marble phalluses were even chiseled off. As historian Leo Steinberg pointed out in his 1983 book The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and in Modern Oblivion, French scholar Montaigne wrote that “many beautiful and antique statues” were “castrated” in Rome during his youth by the order Pope Paul IV. (Believe it or not, some have rumored that a drawer of the castrated bits may still hide somewhere in the Vatican.)…

Michelangelo's Last Judgment 'inspired by seedy brothel scenes'
New study claims artist drew inspiration for Sistine chapel fresco from visits to public baths where male and female prostitutes plied their trade
Fri 12 Nov 2010
For the thousands of pilgrims and tourists who troop through the Sistine chapel every day, Michelangelo's Last Judgment is a monumental depiction of the second coming of Christ.
But a new study claims that the huge painting is also based on the seedy scenes the 16th-century artist witnessed at Roman public baths which doubled as brothels for male and female prostitutes.
"The figures descending to hell and ascending to heaven are inspired by the virile, muscular manual workers and porters Michelangelo would have seen during his visits to the baths, which are well documented," said Elena Lazzarini, a researcher at the University of Pisa and the author of the study. "It was here he defined the build of the working man as the ideal physique."
The public baths which proliferated in Rome at the time offered steam rooms, massages and basic medical treatments with leeches, "but also rooms offering scenes of promiscuity and prostitution, both male and female", she said…

Only Bad for Believers?
Religion, Pornography Use, and Sexual Satisfaction Among American Men
January 2018 - The Journal of Sex Research
Abstract
Research has often demonstrated a negative association between pornography use and various intrapersonal and relationship outcomes, particularly for men. Several recent studies, however, have suggested that
the negative association between pornography use and these indicators is stronger among more religious Americans, suggesting that moral incongruence (engaging in an activity that violates one's sacred values) and the attendant shame or cognitive dissonance, rather than the pornography use per se, may be the primary factor at work.
The current study tested and extended this theory by examining how religion potentially moderates the link between pornography use and sexual satisfaction in a national random sample of American adults (N=1,501). Analyses demonstrated that, while pornography use was negatively associated with sexual satisfaction for American men (not women), among men who rarely attended religious services or held a low opinion of the Bible, this negative association essentially disappeared. Conversely, the negative association between frequency of pornography consumption and sexual satisfaction was more pronounced for men with stronger ties to conventional religion. These findings suggest that the connection between pornography use and sexual satisfaction, especially for men,
depends largely on what viewing pornography means to the consumer and their moral community, and less so on the practice itself.

Perceived addiction to Internet pornography and psychological distress:
Examining relationships concurrently and over time.
Abstract
In the United States, Internet pornography use is a common behavior that has risen in popularity in recent years. The present study sought to examine potential relationships between pornography use and well-being, with a particular focus on individual perceptions of pornography use and feelings of addiction. Using a large cross-sectional sample of adults (N = 713), perceived addiction to Internet pornography predicted psychological distress above and beyond pornography use itself and other relevant variables (e.g., socially desirable responding, neuroticism). This model was replicated using a large cross-sectional sample of undergraduates (N = 1,215). Furthermore, a 1-year, longitudinal follow-up with a subset of this sample (N = 106) revealed a relationship between perceived addiction to Internet pornography and psychological distress over time, even when controlling for baseline psychological distress and pornography use. Collectively,
these findings suggest that perceived addiction to Internet pornography, but not pornography use itself, is uniquely related to the experience of psychological distress.

A Reaction Formation Against Porn
Those who advocate against the dangers of sexual arousal fear their own desires
David J. Ley Ph.D. - May 25, 2014
In May 2014, a Chicago-area Catholic priest was arrested, allegedly for exposing himself to other adults at a gas station. He turned himself in after he was identified by the license plate on his car. Even now, I imagine the man is sitting in a police station, tormented by his actions, in agony for his mistakes. I sympathize with the pain he must feel, and his fear of the rejection, judgment and scorn he will surely experience from his Church and congregation.
The irony of his hypocrisy is made worse by the monsignor’s recent campaign against the seductive, insidious and “addictive” dangers of Internet porn. The clergyman has written and spoken publicly about how Internet pornography, so readily accessible to teens on their phones and computers, causes neurochemicals changes in their brains, and warps the young people’s ideas of sex, love and intimacy:
“One huge concern is the personal isolation that porn creates. It is such a fake form of intimacy and love, it does the absolute opposite of fulfilling each person’s need for intimacy and love. ... There are great negative effects on people on a social, personal, family and relational level.
“It is just a lie, a false presentation (of love and intimacy) … Many, if not most, kids are starting to get addicted.”
He went on to suggest that the crisis of Internet pornography was something that parents, congregations and communities needed to act on, because “Kids ages 11 to 17 are the highest consumers of pornography, according to recent statistics.”
This man’s well-meaning but destructive campaign was based on misconceptions, driven by fear, probably his own fears, of the power that sexual arousal has in his life and that of others. Porn isn’t addictive, it doesn’t change one’s brain, and children under 17 are definitely not the highest consumers of pornography. Porn isn’t addictive, but perhaps fear is.
As an advocate against the sex/porn addiction industry, I am regularly challenged with fear-based rhetoric, that porn and sex can lead people to dangerous, destructive, frightening sexual acts…
A reaction formation is a psychological concept, whereby a person with a strong, uncomfortable desire, develops an even stronger, exaggerated, public stance against that secret, shameful desire. Shakespeare knew this human dynamic, when he wrote in Hamlet, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”
Mark Foley is a former US House Representative, who was a political leader against child pornography, homosexuality and sex offenses against children. He resigned from the House after revelations of a scandal involving a young male page and Foley’s inappropriate communications with the young man. Ted Haggard is an American minister, who preached against homosexuality and exhorted his congregations to support anti-gay legislations. Haggard was later exposed as engaging in homosexual relationships, and even later identified himself as bisexual. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich castigated President Bill Clinton’s infidelity during impeachment proceedings, while Gingrich himself
was having an affair… Read more:https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/women-who-stray/201405/reaction-formation-against-porn

Porn Is Not the Problem—You Aref
Complaining about the dangers of porn distracts from personal responsibility.
David J. Ley Ph.D., May 20, 2013
Porn is not addictive. Sex is not addictive. The ideas of porn and sex addiction are pop psychology concepts that seem to make sense, but have no legitimate scientific basis. For decades, these concepts have flourished in America, but have consistently been rejected by medicine and mental health. The media and American society have accepted that sex and porn are addictive, because it seems intuitively true - we all feel like sometimes, we might do something stupid or self-destructive, when sex is involved. But, this false belief is dangerous, and ultimately not helpful. Because when people buy into the belief that porn is addictive, it changes the argument, and all of a sudden, it seems like it is porn and sex that are the problems. Porn addiction becomes a label, and seems to be an explanation, when in fact, it is just meaningless words and platitudes that distract from the real issue. But sex and porn aren’t the problems. You are…
…Here’s some often-ignored empirical science about porn – as societies have increased their access to porn, rates of sex crimes, including exhibitionism, rape and child abuse, have gone down. (See the work of Milton Diamond) Across the world, and in America, as men have increased ability to view Internet erotica, sex crimes go down. Believe it or not - porn is good for society. This is correlational data, but it is extremely robust, repeated research. But, it is not a message that many people want to hear. Individuals may not like porn, but our society loves it, and benefits from it…

In the complete absence of evidence and the complete lack scientific knowledge of human sexuality - the Chilean bishops claiming the Mr. Cruz left the church “for a life of perversion” sound more like wishful thinking on the part of the Chilean bishops. This means consciously or more likely unconsciously the Chilean bishops have a secret wish to live a life gay sexual perversion. The Chilean bishop never in their wildest dreams expected that Pope Francis would reinvestigate the life of Mr. Cruz and learn how they mistreat and abuse gay men. RC Bishops have gotten away with this criminal discrimination and violence for decades against gay men. Pope Francis caused a tsunami antigay reaction by this investigation that triggered the Vigano and his accomplices unprecedented attack against Pope Francis this last August 2018.
‘God Made You This Way,’ Pope Is Said to Have Told Gay Man
May 21, 2018
ROME — A Chilean survivor of clerical sex abuse has said that Pope Francis told him in a private meeting this month that God had made him gay and that both God and the pontiff loved him that way, a remarkable expression of inclusion for the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
“He said to me, ‘Juan Carlos that’s not a problem,’ ” said Juan Carlos Cruz, the abuse survivor, describing having told the pope he was gay in a long meeting in the Vatican. “You have to be happy with who you are. God made you this way and loves you this way, and the pope loves you this way.” …
…Mr. Cruz had already said that Francis had apologized in the meeting for the large-scale sexual abuse scandal involving Chilean clergy members… Mr. Cruz, through tears, explained that he had told Francis in their nearly three- hour private meeting that he had maintained his Catholic faith even though Chilean bishops had apparently told the pope that he had left the church “for a life of perversion.”
…During a trip to Chile this year, the pope repeatedly defended a Chilean bishop against accusations of a cover-up. Francis called the claims of abuse survivors “calumny.”
The resulting backlash forced him to send the Vatican’s top sex-crimes investigator to Chile. He returned with a scathing, 2,300-page report that suggested that bishops there had misled the pope and destroyed records to prevent the public from learning that abusive priests had been moved from diocese to diocese. Francis said the systemic failures had left him “perplexed and ashamed.”
…Mr. Cruz said that his lawyer warned him in 2009 that the church would focus on his homosexuality, leaving him vulnerable and threatening to make life extremely difficult for him.
He said that his lawyer later told him that Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz, a confidant of Francis, had raised the question of whether Mr. Cruz could even be considered a victim because, Mr. Cruz said, “I was gay and I might have liked it.”
“It was horrible,” he added. “This has always weighed on me.”
In his meeting with Francis on a Sunday at his Santa Marta residence, Mr. Cruz said he had told the pope that he was worried he would think less of him. Mr. Cruz acknowledged that he was gay and, jokingly, not the reincarnation of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a model of the virtue of purity, but someone who tried to be “a good person.” Read more: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/21/world/europe/pope-francis-gays-god-made-you-this-way-.html
In brief, it is the Repressed Homosexual RC Hierarchy who are more likely almost consciously completely dissociated from being sexual aroused by Gay Adult Pornography, because from early childhood they were forced to hide any external expression that appeared to be gay to an adult caregivers. This is a traumatic experience for very young children who are clueless the adult understanding of what gay means. For these children, these expressions at that young age would be childlike expressing of love for someone of the same sex. It would be a traumatic experience for very young children because there is the threat of being abandonment and for children that is a fate worst than death. So, seamlessly these “…Hiding activities learned in childhood often persist into young adulthood, middle age and even senescence, leading many gay people to conceal important aspects of themselves (Jack Drescher 2004).” So, for the these repressed homosexual RC hierarchy members, who have never accepted and adjusted to the fact that they are gay - the sight of a nude muscular male photo (e.g. "Rip Colt") would trigger a fierce surge of gay sexual arousal, but these strong gay sexual feeling would not be identified as such by the repressed person. The person would feel and likely express an outburst of emotional upset and unconsciously automatically attribute their gay sexual arousal to another person and condemning that other person, and condemn that other person with the same force this person used to keep his own gay feelings repressed. This force would be cruel, the absence of love, - in the way this person as child experienced being traumatically forced to hide any external gay expressions, to the child childlike expressions of love. As an adult this person, would dissociated from feeling their gay sexual arousal and would continually be projecting these feelings onto others. Another defense that would be used -is Reaction Formation meaning these repressed homosexual prelates would outwardly express the opposite of what they are experiencing unconsciously internally when they view gay adult pornography. These repressed homosexual prelates are stalled in the latency stage of psychological development and have not move through the adolescence stage of development. Because it through the process of the adolescence stage of development that teenagers comes to understand and accept their sexuality - their sexual orientation. For a repressed homosexual teenager would be dissociated from his sexuality and would more likely describe himself as being asexual.
Two thousand years ago, Jesus described the antidote to prevent making unconscious projections onto others, it is about realizing that the speck is more likely a part of a much larger personal problem - the plank. The arrogant repressed homosexuals RC prelates never are able to humbly realize that Jesus’s words are meant for them, instead they continue to collectively broadcast publicly their repressed homoerotic thoughts and feelings to all the world. Their demonizing statements made about gay adult pornography, including the benign “Rip Colt” photos posted here - speaks volumes about their repressed homosexual nature - collectively share by the majority of the members of the RC hierarchy. In their absence of the science on homosexuality - Just listen to their condemning statements - they will tell you everything about their inmost homosexual thoughts and feelings - their “DEEP-SEATED HOMOSEXUAL TENDENCIES,” including their “SPHINCTER MORALITY.” “…He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly (Luke 1:51-52).”
Why do you look at the speck
of sawdust in your brother's
eye and pay no attention
to the plank in your
own eye?
How can you say to your
brother, 'Brother, let
me take the speck
out of your eye,
'when you yourself fail to
see the plank in your
own eye?
You hypocrite,
first take the plank out of
your eye, and then you
will see clearly to
remove the
speck
from your brother's eye.
Luke 6:40-42
The repressed homosexual RC hierarchy have failed to remove the plank regarding their sexuality from their own eye first before speaking one word about gay adult pornography. Their plank regarding understanding and accepting their true sexuality is removed by heeding the words of St. Paul.
When I was a child,
I talked like a child,
I thought like a child,
I reasoned like a child.
When I became a man,
I put the ways of childhood
behind me.
1 Corinthians 13:11
The repressed homosexual prelates condemning gay adult pornography has nothing to do with the medium of pornography - but has everything to do with their denial of the science of homosexuality and the lifelong harmful effects caused in their early childhood years growing up gay. Without the science of homosexuality these repressed homosexual prelates are disproportionately lopsided between their emotional brain and their relational brain, having full force of their emotional brain, but no stabilizing input from their relation brain - to give them a realistic balanced perceptive of life. And it is this RC Hierarchy unrealistic imbalanced perceptive of life that has dominated the Church for more than the pat 30 years. They committed and affirmed the breach that both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI warned against not allowing to happen - that a continuous and ongoing dialogue between science and religion must be maintained or risk the fostering the atrocities committed by the Hitler and the Nazi regime. The absence of the science of homosexuality is the breach therefore the RC prelates do not speak the truth and they are far from expressing true love - they express the opposite, because THAT WAS WHAT THEY WERE TAUGHT WHEN THEY WERE FORCED TO REPRESSED THEIR LOVE FOR ANOTHER!!!
This topic will be further explained at a later date.
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels,
but do not have love,
I am only
a resounding gong or
a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains,
but do not have love,
I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,
but do not have love,
I gain nothing.

Catholic bishops find pornography more important than poverty
Dec. 6, 2015
Pope Francis’ emphasis has been on “a poor church for the poor” and the church as a “field hospital.” But the agenda of the American bishops at their annual meeting in Baltimore last month was business as usual, with a focus on abortion, same-sex marriage, religious liberty and, especially, pornography.
The bishops labored over a document highlighting the evils of pornography and went into great detail about erotic stimulation, orgasm and masturbation, reminding us, as some of them do on a regular basis, that masturbation is always gravely evil. Because the church has repeatedly condemned pornography, it is not clear why the bishops put so much effort into this policy paper at this time.
What is clear is that a majority of U.S. Catholic bishops continue to be obsessed with things sexual and continue to ignore the pope’s exhortation to instead focus on issues relating to charity and justice. Thomas Reese, reporting on the bishops’ meeting for National Catholic Reporter, wrote, “Francis wants a pastoral church, preaching a Gospel-based message of love, compassion and justice — not a nagging church wagging its finger at people.”
San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy, a native San Franciscan, has embraced the pope’s message and took his best shot at the bishops’ meeting to integrate Francis’ values into the deliberations on the bishops’ document regarding conscience and voting. Each election cycle, the bishops have issued a paper called “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” which hasn’t been revised since 2007, and was only lightly revised for this 2015 meeting. The document, offered as a guide for Catholic voters, focuses on abortion and euthanasia and repeatedly references same-sex marriage. McElroy eloquently argued that the document was basically flawed in that it does not account for the impact of Francis prioritizing Catholic social teaching…

Why Are We Still So Worried About
Watching Porn?
Decades of fearmongering almost got porn addiction added to the International Classification of Diseases. Thankfully, the World Health Organization got it right.
By MARTY KLEIN, TAYLOR KOHUT, and NICOLE PRAUSE
JULY 30, 2018
As scientists and clinicians who study sexuality, we are often consulted by journalists about the “symptoms of porn addiction.” Often, it seems like they’re searching for sensational details so that they can better tell you about “8 Signs Your Partner Is Addicted to Porn.” Unsurprisingly, the requests for comment multiply with each new state that passes legislation regulating porn on the basis that it is a public health hazard, likening sex films to cocaine or cigarettes. They want to hear about our dramatic stories of out-of-control patients to better sell their articles to you, the audience.
We are also accustomed to the shock when journalists learn that “pornography addiction” is actually not recognized by any national or international diagnostic manual. With the publication of the latest International Classification of Diseases (version 11) in June, the World Health Organization once again decided not to recognize sex-film viewing as a disorder. “Pornography viewing” was considered for inclusion in the “problematic Internet use” category, but WHO decided against its inclusion because of the lack of available evidence for this disorder. (“Based on the limited current data, it would therefore seem premature to include it in the ICD-11,” the organization wrote.) The common American standard, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, made the same decision in their latest version as well; there is no listing for porn addiction in DSM-5.
Panic about pornography rolls around every few decades, from Reagan’s Meese Commission on Pornography swearing that Playboy leads to the downfall of men to David Duke claiming sex films are a Jewish conspiracy to dilute the races. Journalists covering this area have struggled to find good, evidence-based information on the reality of porn addiction, as anti-pornography groups have been well-funded, including by state governments. Scientists and clinicians who present evidence that challenges these harm-focused narratives—and we count ourselves among that group—face serious social and political opposition to their research. It can be tough for this info to make it to the public too. In his series How Not to F*ck Up Your Kids Too Bad, Stephen Marche described his experience as a journalist commissioned by two different outlets to write about the risks of pornography: When he could not find good evidence to demonize porn, “the editors killed it. What they wanted was to be scary.”…
…Even if sex-film viewing has been grossly exaggerated as a national problem, might it still be a problem for some people? Of course, just as there are excellent interventions to help reduce television viewing without invoking mental illness labels, you might want to reduce your sex-film viewing in favor of other activities you value more. Research suggests that cognitive and brain-stimulation approaches might be helpful in reducing sex-film viewing without invoking mental illness. Others have proposed using a new application of psychodynamic and communication-based couples counseling and sex-therapy techniques to reduce overfocus on sex-film consumption. If a member of a couple reduces sex-film viewing without addressing the real issues underlying their concerns (e.g., body image, performance anxiety, selfishness, relationship insecurities), eliminating sex-film viewing resolves nothing. Relatedly, viewing sex films might signal avoidance related to a real mental health concern—for example, viewing sex films might take the place of socializing for someone with major depressive disorder. That doesn’t mean the sex films are to blame, even if the person in question might benefit from a reduction in their viewing…
…The decision to include sexual compulsivity in ICD-11 strikes us as odd because the exact diagnostic criteria that were chosen have never been tested. Specifically, the ICD-11 asserts that anyone distressed about their frequent sexual behaviors due purely to “moral judgments and disapproval about sexual impulses, urges, or behaviours” should be excluded from diagnosis. However, moral judgments and disapproval are the strongest predictors of someone believing that they are addicted to pornography in the first place…

Republicans are calling porn a 'public health crisis,' but is it really?
By Jacqueline Howard, CNN
September 2, 2016
(CNN)A debate over porn and public health continues to rage on.
Former Playboy model Pamela Anderson penned an op-ed with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday about the dangers of pornography, calling it a "public hazard."
In July, the Republican Party called internet pornography a "public health crisis" under an amendment that was added to its platform draft at preliminary meetings in Cleveland. The party's national convention took place the week after…
…Eric Schrimshaw, an associate professor at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health who has studied pornography, agreed. "There is currently very little research evidence to suggest that pornography is a 'public health hazard,'" Schrimshaw said…

Researcher: Pornography is not necessarily harmful for couples — and could have positive impacts
By ERIC W. DOLAN, December 13, 2016
A new article published online in the journal Current Opinion in Psychology argues that the current state of research on pornography suffers from several shortcomings, which makes it difficult to draw firm conclusion about pornography’s true effects on relationships.
The article, authored by Taylor Kohut and Lorne Campbell of the University of Western Ontario, says researchers need to develop a standard definition of pornography along with more reliable ways to measure pornography consumption. Researchers should also avoid employing a “harm focused” approach in which neutral and positive outcomes are ignored.
Kohut and Campbell, along with William A. Fisher, previously conducted an exploratory study of 430 people in relationships that found “no negative effects” was the most commonly reported impact of pornography use. Many men and women also reported positive impacts, while others reported negative impacts…

Sexual Repression
Adultery causes earthquakes? Sexual repression can cause
much worse.
Christopher Ryan Ph.D., Apr 20, 2010
Nothing inspires murderous mayhem in human beings more reliably than sexual repression. Denied food, water, or freedom of movement, people will get desperate and some may lash out at what they perceive as the source of their problems, albeit in a weakened state. But if expression of sexuality is thwarted, the human psyche tends to grow twisted into grotesque, enraged perversions of desire. Unfortunately, the distorted rage resulting from sexual repression rarely takes the form of rebellion against the people and institutions behind the repression. (If it did, perhaps we'd be reading of abused priests rather than priests as abusers.) Instead, the rage is generally directed at helpless victims who are sacrificed to the sick gods of guilt, shame, and ignorant pride.
Today, the BBC reports that Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi, an Iranian cleric, has declared that, "Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes." I think we can assume he said this with a straight face, Iranian clerics not being known for their impish sense of humor.
Lest we dismiss this as just another example of distant fundamentalist craziness, we might take a look at some examples a bit closer to home.
We can start with Christianity, a religion centered upon a figure whose holiness begins with his having been conceived asexually. Mark Twain noted the bizarre anti-eroticism of Christianity when he considered heaven:
[Man] has imagined a heaven, and has left entirely out of it the supremest of all his delights, the one ecstasy that stands first and foremost in the heart of every individual of his race . . . sexual intercourse! It is as if a lost and perishing person in a roasting desert should be told by a rescuer he might choose and have all longed-for things but one, and he should elect to leave out water!
(Letters from the Earth)
There's little question that the centuries-long campaign of child rape enabled by institutional cover-up is a direct result of the Church's inhumane teachings concerning human sexuality. If priests—gay, straight, and bi-sexual—were allowed to form erotic connections with consenting adults, who can doubt that countless children would have been spared outrageous torture at the hands of these sick, distorted men?
Gay, conservative, Catholic author Andrew Sullivan has written that "the suppression of these core emotions and the denial of their resolution in love always always leads to personal distortion and cumpulsion and loss of perspective."
Of course, it's not just a question of repressing homosexuality, but of all sexuality. And religions aren't the only institutions to champion such abuse of spirit and body; medical doctors have participated in some of these shameful crimes against humanity…

Science Shows What Sexual RepressionActually Looks Like
Data on porn use demonstrate what sexual repression looks like.
Marty Klein Ph.D., Nov 09, 2010
With the recent election still echoing in everyone's ears, and pundits pundificating about how conservative the country really is, this is a good time to remember the major study done about online pornography subscriptions just 18 months ago.
As reported in the Journal of Economic Perspectives,
* The rates at which people buy pornography are not wildly different from state to state;
* States where people vote for conservative candidates buy more porn than states in which people vote for progressive candidates.
And yes, this is after adjusting for factors including broadband access, income, and population.
According to credit card receipts from a national provider of adult entertainment, eight of the top ten pornography-consuming states went Republican in the 2008 election. And the trend goes beyond voting. For example, states where a majority of residents agreed with the statement "I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage" bought more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. The same difference emerged for the statement "AIDS might be God's punishment for immoral sexual behavior."
And of course the state with the highest per capita purchase of online pornography is...Utah. Of course.
To repeat: porn subscriptions don't just come from California, New York, and other Liberal-Jewish-Urban-Latte-Sipping nests of perversion. They come from every state. And they really come from states in which people claim their values make them uninterested in or resistant to porn…

Silencing the evolution towards acceptance of homosexuals
Silencing the evolution towards acceptance of homosexuals
A Timeline: 1984-1999 - July 30, 1999
CURRENT THEOLOGY - MORAL THEOLOGY: 1986
Archbishop Rembert Weakland, O.S.B., authored two columns that 30 are the equivalent of a pastoral letter to his people. He first recalls that the Catholic Church has been willing, even if hesitantly at times, to accept truth wherever it comes from and to integrate it with revelation. But often enough that has involved struggle. These struggles brought with them two characteristics: excessive cruelty to human beings and fear. "In such an atmosphere, amateurs—turned theologians—easily became headhunters and leaders were picked, not by their ability to work toward a synthesis of the new knowledge and the tradition, but by the rigidity of their orthodoxy." Weakland uses the first decade of this century as an example. The suppressions associated with the Modernist crisis "resulted in a total lack of theological creativity in the U.S.A. for half a century." The struggle for purity of doctrine, Weakland urges, "must avoid the fanaticism and small-mindedness" of past years of church history. He concludes by citing Pope John XXIII: "Nowadays, however, the spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity. She considers that she meets the needs of the present day by demonstrating the validity of her teaching rather than by condemnations."
There can be no doubt that Weakland was referring to the Curran and Hunthausen cases, for he explicitly states that the integrative challenges of today come from psychology and the human sciences and "thus the troubled territory today is sexuality.”
Weakland's message is pellucidly clear: we should have learned from history that suppression—the type that the Vatican is now pursuing—is no way to deal with the pursuit of truth (p 91 Theological Studies 48 1987…

Religious Reasons - Suppressing Desire to View Porn - Research Indicates - Exacerbates Sexual Problems
A Personal Concern
...Repression seems to figure prominently into the puzzle of pornography. In 2009 Michael P. Twohig, a psychologist at Utah State University, asked 299 undergraduate students whether they considered their pornography consumption problematic; for example, causing intrusive sexual thoughts or difficulty finding like-minded sex partners. Then he assessed the students with an eye to understanding the root causes of their issues.
It turns out that among porn viewers, the amount of porn each subject consumed had nothing to do with his or her mental state. What mattered most, Twohig found, was whether the subjects tried to control their sexual thoughts and desires. The more they tried to clamp down on their urge for sex or porn, the more likely they were to consider their own pornography use a problem. The findings suggest that suppressing the desire to view pornography, for example, for moral or religious reasons, might actually strengthen the urge for it and exacerbate sexual problems. It’s all about “personal views and personal values,” Twohig says. In other words, the effects of pornography—positive or negative—have little to do with the medium itself and everything to do with the person viewing it.

The Closet: Psychological Issues of Being In and Coming Out
Jack Drescher, MD - 2004
In the jargon of contemporary homosexual culture, those who hide their sexual identities are referred to as either closeted or said to be in the closet. Revealing one's homosexuality is referred to as coming out. Clinical experience with gay patients reveals hiding and revealing behaviors to be psychologically complex.
Homosexual Identities
In the developmental histories of gay men and women, periods of difficulty in acknowledging their homosexuality, either to themselves or to others, are often reported. Children who grow up to be gay rarely receive family support in dealing with antihomosexual prejudices. On the contrary, beginning in childhood--and distinguishing them from racial and ethnic minorities--gay people are often subjected to the antihomosexual attitudes of their own families and communities (Drescher et al., 2004). Antihomosexual attitudes include homophobia (Weinberg, 1972), heterosexism (Herek, 1984), moral condemnations of homosexuality (Drescher, 1998) and antigay violence (Herek and Berrill, 1992). Hiding activities learned in childhood often persist into young adulthood, middle age and even senescence, leading many gay people to conceal important aspects of themselves.
Closeted individuals frequently cannot acknowledge to themselves, let alone to others, their homoerotic feelings, attractions and fantasies. Their homosexuality is so unacceptable that it must be kept out of conscious awareness and cannot be integrated into their public persona. Consequently, these feelings must be dissociated from the self and hidden from others…
…Individuals who are either consciously prepared to act on their homoerotic feelings or to reveal a homosexual identity to others usually define themselves as gay or lesbian. To be gay, in contrast to being homosexually self-aware, is to claim a normative identity. In other words, defining oneself as gay usually requires some measure of self-acceptance…
Dissociation
What psychological mechanisms facilitate separating one's sexual identity from the rest of one's persona? Sullivan's (1956) concept of dissociation may be illuminating, particularly its most common aspect: selective inattention. A ubiquitous, nonpathological process, selective inattention makes life more manageable, like tuning out the background noise on a busy street. However, through dissociation of anxiety-provoking knowledge about the self, a whole double life can be lived and yet, in some ways, not be known. Clinical presentations of closeted gay people may lie somewhere in severity between selective inattention--most commonly seen in the case of homosexually self-aware patients thinking about "the possibility" that they might be gay--to more severe dissociation--in which any hint of same-sex feelings resides totally out of conscious awareness. More severe forms of dissociation are commonly observed in married men who are homosexually self-aware but cannot permit the thought of themselves as gay (Roughton, 2002)… Read more: http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/articles/closet-psychological-issues-being-and-coming-out
Given Uganda's homophobia, why does it lead the way in Googling gay porn?
10 January 2014
Is there a connection, then, between homophobia and suppressed homosexuality, along the lines of "me thinks he protesteth too much"? Is it that homosexual desires, when shut out because of some sense of shame, can easily express themselves as a form of homophobia? When the US conservative evangelical pastor Ted Haggard, well known for his anti-gay preaching, was discovered to have been paying a masseur for gay sex, he explained that "I think I was partially so vehement because of my own war". Freud coined the description "reaction-formation", in which anxiety-generating feelings are masked by an exaggerated reaction in the opposite direction. There is some experimental evidence to back this up, with one study showing that 20% of those who self-described as "highly straight" indicated some level of same-sex attraction. This discrepancy is often put down to highly controlling parents who do not allow their children room to explore their sexual identity.
Yes, of course, there are many people who do not experience same-sex attraction who are anti-gay. But one of the features of reaction-formation is its paranoia and lack of proportion. And this is precisely what the scaremongering nonsense about gay people being out to get our children – a common line in the Ugandan debate – clearly demonstrates. In conservative religious environments where God is depicted as a powerful all-controlling parent, it makes sense to me that this reaction-formation will be particularly strong…

Why Is Gay Porn So Popular in Pakistan?
June 13, 2013
Earlier this month, the Pew Research Center published results of a public survey of gay tolerance in 39 countries worldwide. The numbers are fairly unsurprising: While a high proportion of respondents in Western Europe and North America answered "yes" to the question "Should society accept homosexuality?" few respondents in the Middle East and Africa agreed with them.
Among the least tolerant nations surveyed was Pakistan, where only 2 percent of those surveyed said society should accept homosexuality. That statistic might be unsurprising, considering that gay sex is illegal under the Pakistani penal code. But what is surprising is how those views compare to Pakistani search traffic around gay-porn-related terms…

What lies behind religious homophobia
February 26, 2013
"And why is your church so anti-gay?," came back the obvious question. "Because it is so gay," I replied.
A furrowed brow invited further exposition. I then spelt out the logic. We interviewed clerics and ex-seminarians in the UK, US and Rome and uncovered a huge irony: the very institution that teaches that the homosexual orientation is "intrinsically disordered" attracts gay candidates for the priesthood in numbers way in excess of what one would expect, based on numbers in society at large. One seminary rector based on his own experience told me the number was at least 50%.
Gay Catholics like me will appreciate another irony with the news of Cardinal Keith O'Brien's resignation: that the very man whose trenchant rhetoric on the subjects of gay adoption and marriage has been brought down by accusations of improper same-sex behaviour from no less than four men who crossed his path in the 1980s, either as a seminary rector or as archbishop of Edinburgh. His decision not to participate in the papal conclave is not to be taken as an admission of guilt and he contests the accusations made against him. Nevertheless, it does raise some general questions about a possible relationship between the tone of anti-gay rhetoric and the identities of those who engage in such high-octane language on same sex attraction…

Homophobes Might Be Hidden Homosexuals
April 12, 2012
Homophobes should consider a little self-reflection, suggests a new study finding those individuals who are most hostile toward gays and hold strong anti-gay views may themselves have same-sex desires, albeit undercover ones.
The prejudice of homophobia may also stem from authoritarian parents, particularly those with homophobic views as well, the researchers added.
"This study shows that if you are feeling that kind of visceral reaction to an out-group, ask yourself, 'Why?'" co-author Richard Ryan, a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, said in a statement. "Those intense emotions should serve as a call to self-reflection.”…
The research may help to explain the underpinnings of anti-gay bullying and hate crimes, the researchers note. People in denial about their own sexual orientation, perhaps a denial fostered by authoritarian and homophobic parents, may feel a threat from other gay and lesbian individuals. Lashing out may ultimately be an indicator of the person's own internal conflict with sexual orientation.
This inner conflict can be seen in some high-profile cases in which anti-gay public figures are caught engaging in same-sex acts, the researchers say. For instance, evangelical preacher and anti-gay-marriage advocate Ted Haggard was caught in a gay sex scandal in 2006. And in 2010, prominent anti-gay activist and co-founder of conservative Family Research Council George Rekers was reportedly spotted in 2010 with a male escort rented from Rentboy. com. According to news reports, the escort confirmed Rekers is gay.
"We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat," Ryan said. "Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences," as was the case in the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay man.

Prejudice, Social Stress, and Mental Health in Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Populations: Conceptual Issues and Research Evidence
Psychol Bull. 2003 September ; 129(5): 674–697.
Ilan H. Meyer - Columbia University
Internalized homophobia
—In the most proximal position along the continuum from the environment to the self, internalized homophobia represents a form of stress that is internal and insidious. In the absence of overt negative events, and even if one’s minority status is successfully concealed, lesbians and gay men may be harmed by directing negative social values toward the self. Thoits (1985, p. 222) described such a process of self-stigmatization, explaining that “role-taking abilities enable individuals to view themselves from the imagined perspective of others. One can anticipate and respond in advance to others’ reactions regarding a contemplated course of action.”
Clinicians use the term internalized homophobia to refer to the internalization of societal antigay attitudes in lesbians and gay men (e.g., Malyon, 1981–1982). Meyer and Dean (1998) defined internalized homophobia as “the gay person’s direction of negative social attitudes toward the self, leading to a devaluation of the self and resultant internal conflicts and poor self-regard” (p. 161). After they accept their stigmatized sexual orientation, LGB people begin a process of coming out. Optimally, through this process they come to terms with their homosexuality and develop a healthy identity that incorporates their sexuality (Cass, 1979, 1984;Coleman, 1981–1982;Troiden, 1989). Internalized homophobia signifies the failure of the coming out process to ward off stigma and thoroughly overcome negative self-perceptions and attitudes (Morris et al., 2001). Although it is most acute early in the coming out process, it is unlikely that internalized homophobia completely abates even when the person has accepted his or her homosexuality. Because of the strength of early socialization experiences, and because of continued exposure to antigay attitudes, internalized homophobia remains an important factor in the gay person’s psychological adjustment throughout life. Gay people maintain varying degrees of residual antigay attitudes that are integrated into their self- perception that can lead to mental health problems (Cabaj, 1988;Hetrick & Martin, 1984;Malyon, 1981–1982;Nungesser, 1983). Gonsiorek (1988) called such residual internalized homophobia “covert,” and said, “Covert forms of internalized homophobia are the most common. Affected individuals appear to accept themselves, yet sabotage their own efforts in a variety of ways” (p. 117)…

Part II - Psychodynamic Theories
Repression
The most basic defense mechanism, because it is involved in each of the others, is repression. Whenever the ego is threatened by undesirable id impulses, it protects it- self by repressing those impulses; that is, it forces threatening feelings into the un- conscious (Freud, 1926/1959a). In many cases the repression is then perpetuated for a lifetime. For example, a young girl may permanently repress her hostility for a younger sister because her hateful feelings create too much anxiety.
No society permits a complete and uninhibited expression of sex and aggression. When children have their hostile or sexual behaviors punished or otherwise suppressed, they learn to be anxious whenever they experience these impulses. Al- though this anxiety seldom leads to a complete repression of aggressive and sexual drives, it often results in their partial repression.
What happens to these impulses after they have become unconscious? Freud (1933/1964) believed that several possibilities exist. First, the impulses may remain unchanged in the unconscious. Second, they could force their way into consciousness in an unaltered form, in which case they would create more anxiety than the person could handle, and the person would be overwhelmed with anxiety. A third and much more common fate of repressed drives is that they are expressed in displaced or disguised forms. The disguise, of course, must be clever enough to deceive the ego. Repressed drives may be disguised as physical symptoms, for example, sexual impotency in a man troubled by sexual guilt. The impotency prevents the man from having to deal with the guilt and anxiety that would result from normal enjoyable sexual activity. Repressed drives may also find an outlet in dreams, slips of the tongue, or one of the other defense mechanisms.

Reaction Formation - Homophobic men
Concept. The concept of reaction formation involves converting a socially unacceptable impulse into its opposite. To apply this notion to esteem protection, one may propose the following: People respond to the implication that they have some unacceptable trait by behaving in a way that would show them to have the opposite trait. Insinuations of hostility or intolerance might, for example, be countered with exaggerated efforts to prove oneself a peace-loving or tolerant person.
Evidence. The original ideas about reaction formation pertained to aggressive and sexual impulses, and these are still plausible places for finding defenses, provided that acknowledging those impulses or feelings would damage self-esteem. With sex, there are undoubtedly still cases in which people regard their own potential sexual responses as unacceptable…
A comparable finding with male subjects was recently reported by Adams, Wright, and Lohr (1996). They assessed homophobia and then exposed participants to videotapes depicting homosexual intercourse. Homophobic men reported low levels of sexual arousal, but physiological measures indicated higher levels of sexual response than were found among other participants. Thus, again, the subjective response reported by these participants was the opposite of what their bodies actually indicated. This finding also fits the view that homophobia may itself be a reaction formation against homosexual tendencies, insofar as the men who were most aroused by homosexuality were the ones who expressed the most negative attitudes toward it…

Sexual Identities:
Dynamics of Self-Acceptance and Defense - 2012
When individuals grow up with autonomy-thwarting parents, they may be prevented from exploring internally endorsed values and identities and as a result shut out aspects of the self perceived to be unacceptable. Given the stigmatization of homosexuality, individuals perceiving low autonomy support from parents may be especially motivated to conceal same-sex sexual attraction, leading to defensive processes such as reaction formation…
…Psychodynamic traditions hold that people have a preferred view of themselves, which may not reflect reality. When this idealized view is threatened by contradictory thoughts or feelings, people engage in one or more unconscious processes to defend against the threat to self. Among defensive processes that have been recognized as having some empirical support is reaction formation, a process indicated in the modern body of research on self-esteem preservation (e.g., Baumeister, Dale, & Sommer, 1998). Reaction formation refers to the process of adopting values or beliefs, or engaging in behaviors, that are in opposition to feelings or impulses experienced within oneself that are deemed unacceptable. Empirical work has shown reaction formation processes with respect to sexism (Sherman & Garkin, 1980), sex guilt (Morokoff, 1985), and prejudice (Dutton & Lake, 1973), indicating that individuals sometimes defend against self-relevant, threatening information by engaging in opposing behaviors…

Projection
When an internal impulse provokes too much anxiety, the ego may reduce that anxiety by attributing the unwanted impulse to an external object, usually another person. This is the defense mechanism of projection, which can be defined as seeing in others unacceptable feelings or tendencies that actually reside in one’s own unconscious (Freud, 1915/1957b). For example, a man may consistently interpret the actions of older women as attempted seductions. Consciously, the thought of sexual intercourse with older women may be intensely repugnant to him, but buried in his unconscious is a strong erotic attraction to these women. In this example, the young man deludes himself into believing that he has no sexual feelings for older women. Although this projection erases most of his anxiety and guilt, it permits him to maintain a sexual interest in women who remind him of his mother.
Freud believed that the persecutor is inevitably a former friend of the same sex [or a brother], although sometimes people may transfer their delusions onto a person of the opposite sex. When homosexual impulses become too powerful, persecuted paranoiacs defend themselves by reversing these feelings and then projecting them onto their original object [the former friend of the same sex (or brother)].

Projection
Concept. Projection is a popular concept in everyday discourse as well as in psychological thought. In its simplest form, it refers to seeing one’s own traits in other people. A more rigorous understanding involves perceiving others as having traits that one inaccurately believes oneself not to have. As a broad form of influence of self-concept on person perception, projection may be regarded as more a cognitive bias than a defense mechanism. Nonetheless, projection can be seen as defensive if perceiving the threatening trait in others helps the individual in some way to avoid recognizing it in himself or herself, and indeed this is how Freud (e.g., 1915/1961a) conceptualized projection. Thus, there are multiple ways of understanding projection, and they vary mainly along the dimension of how effectively the undesirable trait or motive is repudiated as part of the self.
Evidence. The simpler, more loosely defined version of projection is fairly well documented. The false consensus effect, first described by Ross, Greene, and House (1977), is probably the best-known form of this, insofar as it is a broad tendency to assume that others are similar to oneself. The false consensus effect is defined as overestimating the percentage of other people who share one’s traits, opinions, preferences, or motivations…
