I am always most appreciative for Pope Francis's spiritual guidance. Pope Francis always seems to be able to bring a sense of realistic hope of the Holy Spirit working with all those who are facing attempting to work through insurmountable odds not to become discouraged, because the power of God’s love will overcome evil. And I am humbly grateful for this much needed spiritual guidance.This is the kind of spiritual wisdom that comes from the lived experience from a lifetime spent years struggling to always be faithful to Jesus traveling down more roads than one may care to remembered.

ROME, Oct. 30— More than 350 years after the Roman Catholic Church condemned Galileo, Pope John Paul II is poised to rectify one of the Church's most infamous wrongs -- the persecution of the Italian astronomer and physicist for proving the Earth moves around the Sun.
With a formal statement at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on Saturday, Vatican officials said the Pope will formally close a 13-year investigation into the Church's condemnation of Galileo in 1633. The condemnation, which forced the astronomer and physicist to recant his discoveries, led to Galileo's house arrest for eight years before his death in 1642 at the age of 77.
The dispute between the Church and Galileo has long stood as one of history's great emblems of conflict between reason and dogma, science and faith. The Vatican's formal acknowledgement of an error, moreover, is a rarity in an institution built over centuries on the belief that the Church is the final arbiter in matters of faith.
At the time of his condemnation, Galileo had won fame and the patronage of leading Italian powers like the Medicis and Barberinis for discoveries he had made with the astronomical telescope he had built. …Ryan challenged my own view of the conflict handling in three key ways. First, he was much more ready to attribute the cause of the visitation to some hidden arrangement between Rome and the Reagan government that resulted from Hunthausen’s controversial stance on nuclear weapons. Ryan cited three reasons for believing this to be true: (1) the visitation [November 1983] came very close in time to the American government’s granting of diplomatic status to the Holy See (in Januaryof 1984); (2) a visitation of another “peace” bishop, Bishop Walter Sullivan of Richmond, Virginia, took place at approximately the same time as the Seattle visitation (though in a much quieter, less publicized fashion); and (3) the Holy See’s representatives in the Hunthausen case seemed to “protest too much” when denying that the Seattle visitation had anything to do with Hunthausen’s position on the nuclear arms question.
If Ryan is correct in his view, then my own findings here suffer from some serious
deficiencies, because then the conflict would have been about something very different than what I have believed it to be about. Moreover, there would have been a crucial participant involved (one or more representatives of the U.S. government) that I have failed to identify. Were this the case, I do not believe that my findings here would be entirely undermined (whatever their ultimate motives, I think it is clear that the bishops participating in the Rome- Seattle conflict used secrecy, politeness, etc. in strategic fashion), but obviously my overall picture of the conflict would be less correct than I believe it to be. Regarding Ryan’s theory, I can only say that I have not found enough evidence in my own investigation to establish its credibility. The only additional piece of information that I have come across that might fit in with this theory concerns the revelation of the FBI and U.S. Naval Intelligencefiles on Hunthausen’s anti-nuclear activity. But this surveillance activity does not surprise me and seems not, in and of itself, to increase the likelihood of there having been some sort of cooperation / conspiracy between Rome and Washington. Perhaps someday further evidence will give us an entirely new picture of the Hunthausen case. But in my view the evidence presently available suggests that Rome was indeed concerned with pastoral issues and maintaining its control over local churches. Involvement by the U.S. government in the affair is only speculative at this point…

The Vatican yesterday ordered an American priest and nun to end their 30-year ministry to gays and lesbians after an investigation concluded that they failed to comply with the Roman Catholic Church's teaching on the "intrinsic evil of homosexual acts."
In a rare direct intervention, the Vatican placed a gag order on Sister Jeannine Gramick and the Rev. Robert Nugent, who have toured the country from their base in Prince George's County, teaching Catholic parishes ways to reconcile church doctrine with the realities of gay life. The decision effectively ends the careers of two of the most prominent gay rights advocates within the Catholic Church.
By issuing a public "notification" calling the pair's teachings "erroneous and dangerous," the Vatican resorted to a level of punishment it has used against American clergy only twice in the last 60 years, both times in the cases of errant theologians. Most recently, in 1986, the Rev. Charles E. Curran, then a professor at Catholic University, was notified by the Vatican that he could no longer teach Catholic theology.
According to the notification, Gramick and Nugent are "permanently prohibited from any pastoral work involving homosexual persons and are ineligible, for an undetermined period, for any office in their respective religious institutions." While falling short of excommunication, a still rarer measure, this notification is considered an extreme punishment, in part because of its public nature. The church more frequently chastises errant clergy with a private letter, or through a bishop. This time, though, it chose a kind of public shaming, broadcasting to parishes across the nation that Gramick and Nugent's views are anathema to the church.
The ruling also sends a message to the growing number of gay outreach and AIDS ministries in Catholic churches to be careful: In showing compassion for homosexuals, they must remember to mention the church's disapproval of homosexual acts. In the months before the decision, several parishes holding gay-themed conferences canceled scheduled talks by Gramick and Nugent.
The highly publicized ruling reflects the church's increased impatience with the growing number of Catholics who call for full acceptance of homosexuals by the church. In 1986, the Vatican issued a statement clarifying its position on homosexuality, reminding Catholics that the church did not consider homosexuality a neutral, or a good, as some had been teaching, but a disorder.

While male homosexuality remained illegal in Weimar Germany under Paragraph 175 of the criminal code, German homosexual-rights activists became worldwide leaders in efforts to reform societal attitudes that condemned homosexuality. Many in Germany regarded the Weimar Republic's toleration of homosexuals as a sign of Germany's decadence. Nazi leaders posed as moral crusaders who wanted to stamp out the "vice" of homosexuality from Germany in order to help win the racial struggle. In 1977, Archbishop Hunthausen came out in opposition to the "first strike" capability of the Trident nuclear submarine base in Bangor. In a letter sent to priests of the archdiocese, Hunthausen stated that the time was right to support nuclear disarmament, and that the United States appeared to be changing from a defensive to offensive posture in order to strike first in a nuclear war.
A few months later, Hunthausen publicly defended the rights of gays and lesbians in a letter he penned for Catholic Northwest Progress. In the letter, which was reprinted in Seattle Gay News, he noted "the terrible impact that discriminatory patterns in society have upon both the individual and the total community," and that gays and lesbians should be allowed to have an active role in the Christian community.
Both issues raised more than a few eyebrows in the Catholic community, and while some objected to his stance on each matter, others viewed his underlying messages of peace, love, and goodwill as being very Christian indeed. But as Hunthausen became more vocal about these issues, some of the more conservative members of the archdiocese struggled to maintain their support of the archbishop.
Civil Disobedience
Hunthausen was a strong supporter of young people, urging for improved support for Catholic schools. He also sought ways to provide a better Catholic education to underprivileged children. But it was his controversial statements and actions on other issues that garnered the most press.
In 1980, Hunthausen joined 40 national religious leaders in signing a document opposed to draft registration. In 1981, still upset with a nuclear-submarine base practically in his archdiocese's back yard, he referred to Trident as the "Auschwitz of Puget Sound," and urged taxpayers to revolt to protest the buildup of nuclear arms. The following year he went one step further and withheld half of his personal income tax to protest the nuclear arms race.
This did not sit well with the Internal Revenue Service. Hunthausen believed that he had a right to "peacefully disobey certain laws under serious conditions," but the IRS eventually garnished his wages.
Even the some of the most anti-war Catholics were put off by the archbishop's method of direct action, and began speaking out. Hunthausen refused to back down, stating, "The bishop is supposed to speak out on the moral aspect of public questions. That is not only his right, more importantly, it is his duty. He has to make the effort to apply the values of the Gospel to the concrete social situation of his day" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, March 9, 1982)…

The "Moral Notes" for 1986 deal with four areas of importance and concern: (1) dissent in moral theology; (2) sanctity of life, quality of life, and social justice; (3) virtue and American culture; (4) the U.S. bishops'
pastoral letter on the economy.
DISSENT IN MORAL THEOLOGY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS
The May issue of Catholicism in Crisis referred to the case of Charles E. Curran as "the most crucial intellectual issue now facing the Catholic Church in America.”1 It was no secret then how that journal wanted the issue resolved. Be that as it may, the matter was concluded by the July 25 letter (delivered to Curran August 18) of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
informing Curran that he is no longer "suitable nor eligible to exercise the function of a professor of Catholic theology."2
I say "the matter was concluded." That the "most crucial intellectual issue now facing the Catholic Church in America" was not truly resolved seems clear from the remarkable journalistic response to be briefly chronicled here. The chronicle begins with the statement of Archbishop James Hickey: "I fully support this judgment of the Holy See.”3 Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick (Newark) also praised the decision. “We who are teachers in the Church," he said, "have an obligation to teach what the Church teaches." "It is a case of truth in packaging. If the box
is labeled salt and contains pepper, it can't be left on the shelf to confuse the shoppers.”4 Spelled out, McCarrick's truth-in-packaging metaphor would read: "If a person is labeled a 'Catholic theologian,' and presents
anything but the official line, that person cannot be left in place to confuse the faithful." In other and starker words, the task of the theologian is to repeat uncritically what the magisterium has said.
But the pundits have far outworded the prelates. Norman Podhoretz,
of all people, saw in the decision a sign that "the Vatican has demonstrated that it still has a definable identity whose integrity it will defend.”5 In this way it "puts to shame all other institutions of our day, most notably the universities." Podhoretz is not unhappy about this, because
he wants "barriers in contemporary society against the spread of sexual
permissiveness." Yet he wants someone else to build those barriers and take the flak. One is tempted to pursue the barrier metaphor with some
questions. Is it not possible, for instance, to construct barriers from the wrong material or to place them in the wrong spot? Is it possible for barriers to rust?…
Bishops
Archbishop Rembert Weakland, O.S.B., authored two columns that 30 are the equivalent of a pastoral letter to his people. He first recalls that the Catholic Church has been willing, even if hesitantly at times, to accept truth wherever it comes from and to integrate it with revelation. But often enough that has involved struggle. These struggles brought with them two characteristics: excessive
cruelty to human beings and fear. "In such an atmosphere,
amateurs—turned theologians—easily became headhunters and leaders were picked, not by their ability to work toward a synthesis of the new knowledge and the tradition, but by the rigidity of their orthodoxy." Weakland uses the first decade of this century as an example. The suppressions associated with the Modernist crisis "resulted in a total lack of theological creativity in the U.S.A. for half a century." The struggle for purity of doctrine, Weakland urges, "must avoid the fanaticism and small-mindedness" of past years of church history. He concludes by citing Pope John XXIII: "Nowadays, however, the spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity. She considers that she meets the needs of the present day by demonstrating the validity of her teaching rather than by condemnations."
There can be no doubt that Weakland was referring to the Curran and
Hunthausen cases, for he explicitly states that the integrative
challenges of today come from
psychology
and the human
sciences and "thus the troubled
territory today is
sexuality.”
Weakland's message is pellucidly clear: we should have learned from history that suppression—the type that the Vatican is now pursuing—is no way to deal with the pursuit of truth (p 91 Theological Studies 48 1987…)

The provisional document produced at the halfway point of a two-week meeting on family life said gay partnerships, while morally problematic, provided gay couples with "precious" support. It also said the church must welcome
divorced people and recognize the "positive" aspects of civil marriages and even cohabitation.
Organizers of the synod insisted that the document was merely a working paper that would be amended.
Several known conservatives who participated in the synod immediately came out against the report. The head of the Polish bishops' conference, Cardinal Stanislaw Gadecki, called it "unacceptable" and a deviation from church teaching.

USCCB president ‘deeply concerned’ about court’s LGBT ruling

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said he is “deeply concerned” that by ruling federal law protects LGBT workers from discrimination, the U.S. Supreme Court “has effectively redefined the legal meaning of ‘sex’ in our nation’s civil rights law.”
“This is an injustice that will have implications in many areas of life,” Los Angeles Archbishop Jose H. Gomez said in a statement issued late June 15.
Earlier in the day the high court in a 6-3 vote said LGBT people are protected from job discrimination by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
“An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex,” said Justice Neil Gorsuch writing the opinion in the case argued at the start of the court’s term last October.
“Only the written word is the law, and all persons are entitled to its benefit,” Gorsuch wrote. Dissenting votes were from Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh.

I spent much of this week reading and trying to absorb the new and devastating book by one Frédéric Martel on the gayness of the hierarchy at the top of the Catholic Church, In the Closet of the Vatican: Power, Homosexuality, Hypocrisy. It’s a bewildering and vast piece of reporting — Martel interviewed no fewer than “41 cardinals, 52 bishops and monsignori, 45 apostolic nuncios, secretaries of nunciatures or foreign ambassadors, 11 Swiss Guards and over 200 Catholic priests and seminarians.” He conducted more than 1,500 interviews over four years, is quite clear about his sources, and helps the reader weigh their credibility. He keeps the identity of many of the most egregiously hypocritical cardinals confidential, but is unsparing about the dead.
The picture Martel draws is jaw-dropping. Many of the Vatican gays — especially the most homophobic — treat their vows of celibacy with an insouciant contempt. Martel argues that many of these cardinals and officials have lively sex lives, operate within a “don’t ask, don’t tell” culture, constantly hit on young men, hire prostitutes, throw chem-sex parties, and even pay for sex with church money. How do we know this? Because, astonishingly, they tell us.
So much of the information in the book comes from sources deep within the Holy See. Named and unnamed, they expose their fellow cardinals and bishops and nuncios as hypocrites, without perhaps realizing that their very targets are doing the same to them. Martel didn’t expect this remarkable candor, or, clearly, what he was about to see: “Whether they are ‘practising’, ‘homophile’, ‘initiates’, ‘unstraights’, ‘wordly’, ‘versatile’, ‘questioning’, or simply ‘in the closet’, the world I am discovering, with its 50 shades of gay, is beyond comprehension.”
Among the named sources: Francesco Lepore, a brilliant young gay Latin translator and priest. He soared through the ranks, directly serving Popes Benedict XVI and Francis, until, as a gay man, he found a way to quit his post because he couldn’t abide the double lifehe was forced to lead, or the rancid hypocrisy of the whole system. He says he saw everything from the inside: “He has had several lovers among archbishops and prelates; he has been propositioned by a number of cardinals, whom we discuss: an endless list. I have scrupulously checked all of those stories, making contact myself with those cardinals, archbishops, monsignori, nuncios, assistants, ordinary priests or confessors at St Peter’s, all basically homosexual.” This is not the peddling of innuendo, or salacious gossip. It’s reporting…
…Martel is taken aback by the way in which many of his interviewees openly hit on him and, especially, his young assistant. Being gay, he notices things a straight reporter might not. His ears prick up when Cardinal Burke’s assistant casually informs him of the archenemy of Francis: “Sheworks from home.” He sees the cruising all around him. He notices simple things that some might call innuendo, but any gay man will instantly recognize, like the fabulous interiors of the gay cardinals’ palaces, always with their “assistants” or young “relative” on hand. Or he simply describes Burke’s appearance: “The 70-year-old cardinal [is] sitting on an asparagus-green throne twice as large as he is, surrounded by silvery drapery. He wears a fluorescent yellow mitre in the shape of a tall Tower of Pisa, and long turquoise gloves that look like iron hands; his mozzetta is cabbage-green, embroidered with yellow, lined with a leek-green hood revealing a bow of crimson and pomegranate lace.”
Then there’s simply the reporting. Some of the most conservative clerics concede the truth of the book on the record. Or take Martel’s interaction with the Swiss Guards, one of whom vents: “The harassment is so insistent that I said to myself that I was going straight home. Many of us are exasperated by the usually rather indiscreet advances of the cardinals and bishops.” Or the prostitutes who keep elaborate records of their clients, and have already caused huge scandals in Italy. Or a confessor-priest in Saint Peter’s who guides Martel into the Vatican with the words: “Welcome to Sodoma.” Martel double-checks rumors until he can confirm them. Of course, many of these sources remain unnamed. The very subject matter makes that unavoidable. But critics of the book — and the defensive dismissals of it as mere salacious gossip are already out there — have to argue that Martel is a liar, a fabulist, a con artist, who faked these remarkable interviews. Homophobes should consider a little self-reflection, suggests a new study finding those individuals who are most hostile toward gays and hold strong anti-gay views may themselves have same-sex desires, albeit undercover ones.
The prejudice of homophobia may also stem from authoritarian parents, particularly those with homophobic views as well, the researchers added.

Ryan cautioned, however, that this link is only one source of anti-gay sentiments.

Homosexual identities can be described as closeted, homosexually self aware, gay/ lesbian and non-gay identified. This classification privileges the role of self-definition. In coming out, gay people integrate, as best as they can, dissociated aspects of the self. As gay people must decide on a daily basis whether to reveal and to whom they will reveal, coming out is a process that never ends…
Closeted individuals frequently cannot acknowledge to themselves, let alone to others, their homoerotic feelings, attractions and fantasies. Their homosexuality is so unacceptable that it must be kept out of conscious awareness and cannot be integrated into their public persona. Consequently, these feelings must be dissociated from the self and hidden from others…
Dissociation
What psychological mechanisms facilitate separating one's sexual identity from the rest of one's persona? Sullivan's (1956) concept of dissociation may be illuminating, particularly its most common aspect: selective inattention. A ubiquitous, nonpathological process, selective inattention makes life more manageable, like tuning out the background noise on a busy street. However, through dissociation of anxiety-provoking knowledge about the self, a whole double life can be lived and yet, in some ways, not be known. Clinical presentations of closeted gay people may lie somewhere in severity between selective inattention--most commonly seen in the case of homosexually self-aware patients thinking about "the possibility" that they might be gay--to more severe dissociation--in which any hint of same-sex feelings resides totally out of conscious awareness. More severe forms of dissociation are commonly observed in married men who are homosexually self-aware but cannot permit the thought of themselves as gay (Roughton, 2002)…
It can be painful to keep significant aspects of the self hidden or to vigilantly separate aspects of the self from each other. Constant hiding creates difficulties in accurately assessing other people's perceptions of oneself, as well as recognizing one's own strengths. Dissociation's impact on self-esteem can also make it difficult to feel one's actual accomplishments as reflections of one's own abilities. Transparency, invisibility, losing one's voice, and being stuck behind walls or other barriers are some of the terms used to describe the subjective experience of dissociative detachment (Drescher, 1998)…
Attacking those perceived to be gay serves several functions. One penile plethysmography study indicated that men with strong antihomosexual beliefs actually had significant homosexual arousal patterns (Adams et al., 1996). Strong antihomosexual feelings may represent an effort to control perceptions of a gay-basher's own sexual identity. This might translate as, "If I attack gay people, no one will think I am gay." Psychoanalysts call this defense "identification with the aggressor" (Freud, 1966). It may represent intrapsychic efforts to maintain a psychological distance from one's own homoerotic feelings. In other words, it is an effort to strengthen dissociative tendencies…
Years spent in the closet can make the prospect of revealing oneself an emotionally charged experience. However, the process is not just about revealing oneself to others--in coming out, gay people integrate, as best they can, dissociated aspects of the self. Herdt and Boxer (1993) classified coming out as a ritual process of passage that requires a gay person to 1) unlearn the principles of natural or essentialist heterosexuality; 2) unlearn the stereotypes of homosexuality; and 3) learn the ways of the lesbian and gay culture they are entering. Finally, as gay people must decide on a daily basis whether to reveal and to whom they will reveal themselves, coming out is a process that never ends…
Internalized, antihomosexual attitudes are often rigid and disdainful of compromise or "relativism." A patient's dogmatic belief system may not recognize the concept of respectful disagreement. Nevertheless, exploration of such internalized, moral absolutes, and the identifications from which they stem, requires therapeutic tact. Some patients may try to resolve inner conflicts about being gay by selectively attending to their antihomosexual identifications. Unable to tolerate conflicting feelings about homosexuality, these patients rather unconvincingly tell themselves, "It is OK to be gay." This approach reverses the feelings and identifications of a closeted identity. In the subjectivity of the latter, heterosexuality is idealized and homosexuality dissociated. After coming out, being gay is idealized, while disapproving feelings are denied. Therapeutic holding entails being able to contain both sides (Winnicott, 1986)…

Why Selma Fraiberg’s research is crucial is that it helps to explain how the development of empathy is thwarted in early childhood years growing up gay and remains the same throughout a lifetime. Fraiberg classic research demonstrates how the mistreatment experienced during early childhood years are UNCONSCIOUSLY reenacted in adulthood, thus perpetuating the same form childhood abuse.
Fraiberg’s research is about observing the interactions of the the mother-infant relationship. She details her observation of a young mother alone with her baby and what happens when her baby begins crying. The infant continues crying non-stop for several minutes and during this time surprisingly the mother was unresponsive to her baby’s distress. The mother made NO EFFORT to soothe her baby i.e. by picking up and holding her baby. Fraiberg’s research focused on answering the question - Why the mother was unresponsive her baby’s distress? In brief, the reason why the mother was unresponsive to her baby crying - was because when the mother was child no one was responsive to her crying. The mother’s mistreatment of her baby was an UNCONSCIOUS reenactment, because no one had the empathy to tune into her distress as a child.
When a gay child is mistreated because the parents perceives the child’s behavior, as young as 4 or 5 years of age. It is a traumatic experience for the child - feeling abandoned. No one had the empathy to tune into this child’s overwhelming most unpleasant feelings. The child’s ability to develop empathy has been seriously thwarted and remains this way throughout a lifetime. Nowhere is this lack of empathy so clearly demonstrated than among the majority of the members of the RC curia and hierarchy. Their complete absence of the science of homosexuality for the past over 60 years, since 1957, and they have remained condemning of gay people - opposed to acknowledging, lacking the ability to tune into, in the least, the reality of their sexual orientation as human beings. Collectively, per Fraiberg, they do not hear or try to understand the reality of gay people, because as very young children no one attempted to hear or understand them as gay people. These are the GHOSTS in the RC curia and hierarchy, perpetuating violence. These GHOSTS remain among the majority of the members of the RC hierarchy, because they are repressed dissociated homosexuals as is proven by their decades of fierce antigay statements void of the science of homosexuality.
To dispel these ghosts the remedy is as Pope John Paul II writes to “Know Yourself” identify the “Internalized Homophobia” the internalization of societal antigay attitudes that are unsubstantiated not based on facts and end the perpetuation of this generational form of structural violence.

In the absence of overt negative events, and even if one’s minority status is successfully concealed, lesbians and gay men may be harmed by directing negative social values toward the self. Thoits (1985, p. 222) described such a process of self-stigmatization, explaining that “role-taking abilities enable individuals to view themselves from the imagined perspective of others. One can anticipate and respond in advance to others’ reactions regarding a contemplated course of action.”
Clinicians use the term internalized homophobia to refer to the internalization of societal antigay attitudes in lesbians and gay men (e.g., Malyon, 1981–1982). Meyer and Dean (1998) defined internalized homophobia as “the gay person’s direction of negative social attitudes toward the self, leading to a devaluationof the self and resultant internal conflicts and poor self-regard” (p. 161). After they accept their stigmatized sexual orientation, LGB people begin a process of coming out. Optimally, through this process they come to terms with their homosexuality and develop a healthy identity that incorporates their sexuality(Cass, 1979, 1984;Coleman, 1981–1982;Troiden, 1989). Internalized homophobia signifies the failure of the coming out process to ward off stigma and thoroughly overcome negative self-perceptions and attitudes (Morris et al., 2001). Although it is most acute early in the coming out process, it is unlikely that internalized homophobia completely abates even when the person has accepted his or her homosexuality. Because of the strength of early socialization experiences, and because of continued exposure to antigay attitudes, internalized homophobia remains an important factor in the gay person’s psychological adjustment throughout life. Gay people maintain varying degrees of residual antigay attitudes that are integrated into their self- perception that can lead to mental health problems (Cabaj, 1988;Hetrick & Martin, 1984;Malyon, 1981–1982;Nungesser, 1983). Gonsiorek (1988) called such residual internalized homophobia “covert,” and said, “Covert forms of internalized homophobia are the most common. Pope Francis’ emphasis has been on “a poor church for the poor” and the church as a “field hospital.” But the agenda of the American bishops at their annual meeting in Baltimore last month was business as usual, with a focus on abortion, same-sex marriage, religious liberty and, especially, pornography.
The bishops labored over a document highlighting the evils of pornography and went into great detail about erotic stimulation, orgasm and masturbation, reminding us, as some of them do on a regular basis, that masturbation is always gravely evil. Because the church has repeatedly condemned pornography, it is not clear why the bishops put so much effort into this policy paper at this time.
What is clear is that a majority of U.S. Catholic bishops continue to be obsessed with things sexual and continue to ignore the pope’s exhortation to instead focus on issues relating to charity and justice. Thomas Reese, reporting on the bishops’ meeting for National Catholic Reporter, wrote, “Francis wants a pastoral church, preaching a Gospel-based message of love, compassion and justice — not a nagging church wagging its finger at people.”
San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy, a native San Franciscan, has embraced the pope’s message and took his best shot at the bishops’ meeting to integrate Francis’ values into the deliberations on the bishops’ document regarding conscience and voting. Each election cycle, the bishops have issued a paper called “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” which hasn’t been revised since 2007, and was only lightly revised for this 2015 meeting. The document, offered as a guide for Catholic voters, focuses on abortion and euthanasia and repeatedly references same-sex marriage. McElroy eloquently argued that the document was basically flawed in that it does not account for the impact of Francis prioritizing Catholic social teaching…

In May 2014, a Chicago-area Catholic priest was arrested, allegedly for exposing himself to other adults at a gas station. He turned himself in after he was identified by the license plate on his car. Even now, I imagine the man is sitting in a police station, tormented by his actions, in agony for his mistakes. I sympathize with the pain he must feel, and his fear of the rejection, judgment and scorn he will surely experience from his Church and congregation.
The irony of his hypocrisy is made worse by the monsignor’s recent campaign against the seductive, insidious and “addictive” dangers of Internet porn. The clergyman has written and spoken publicly about how Internet pornography, so readily accessible to teens on their phones and computers, causes neurochemicals changes in their brains, and warps the young people’s ideas of sex, love and intimacy:
“One huge concern is the personal isolation that porn creates. It is such a fake form of intimacy and love, it does the absolute opposite of fulfilling each person’s need for intimacy and love. ... There are great negative effects on people on a social, personal, family and relational level.
“It is just a lie, a false presentation (of love and intimacy) … Many, if not most, kids are starting to get addicted.”
He went on to suggest that the crisis of Internet pornography was something that parents, congregations and communities needed to act on, because “Kids ages 11 to 17 are the highest consumers of pornography, according to recent statistics.”
This man’s well-meaning but destructive campaign was based on misconceptions, driven by fear, probably his own fears, of the power that sexual arousal has in his life and that of others. Porn isn’t addictive, it doesn’t change one’s brain, and children under 17 are definitely NOT the highest consumers of pornography. Porn isn’t addictive, but perhaps fear is.
As an advocate against the sex/porn addiction industry, I am regularly challenged with fear-based rhetoric, that porn and sex can lead people to dangerous, destructive, frightening sexual acts…
A reaction formation is a psychological concept, whereby a person with a strong, uncomfortable desire, develops an even stronger, exaggerated, public stance against that secret, shameful desire. Shakespeare knew this human dynamic, when he wrote in Hamlet, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”
Mark Foley is a former US House Representative, who was a political leader against child pornography, homosexuality and sex offenses against children. He resigned from the House after revelations of a scandal involving a young male page and Foley’s inappropriate communications with the young man. Ted Haggard is an American minister, who preached against homosexuality and exhorted his congregations to support anti-gay legislations. Haggard was later exposed as engaging in homosexual relationships, and even later identified himself as bisexual. Abstract
The rebound effect of thought suppression refers to attempts to suppress thoughts that result in an increase of those thoughts. The aim of this three-study research was to investigate the suppression of thoughts and its possible importance in the cognitive model of predicted compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) among Israeli Jewish religious and secular adolescents. Study 1 (N = 661): Do religious and secular adolescents differ in CSB and related psychopathology? Study 2 (N = 522): Does CSB mediate the link between religiosity and well-being? Study 3 (N = 317): Does religiosity relate to suppression of sexual thoughts, which relates to higher CSB and lower well-being? The analyses indicated that religious adolescents are higher in CSB than secular ones, and that sexual suppression and CSB mediate the link between religiosity and well-being. Results are discussed and address the need for a broader understanding of CSB and the function of thought suppression.

With the recent election still echoing in everyone's ears, and pundits pundificating about how conservative the country really is, this is a good time to remember the major study done about online pornography subscriptions just 18 months ago.
As reported in the Journal of Economic Perspectives,
* The rates at which people buy pornography are not wildly different from state to state;
* States where people vote for conservative candidates buy more porn than states in which people vote for progressive candidates.
And yes, this is after adjusting for factors including broadband access, income, and population.
According to credit card receipts from a national provider of adult entertainment, eight of the top ten pornography-consuming states went Republican in the 2008 election. And the trend goes beyond voting. For example, states where a majority of residents agreed with the statement "I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage" bought more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. The same difference emerged for the statement "AIDS might be God's punishment for immoral sexual behavior."
And of course the state with the highest per capita purchase of online pornography is...Utah. Of course.
To repeat: porn subscriptions don't just come from California, New York, and other Liberal-Jewish-Urban-Latte-Sipping nests of perversion. They come from every state. And they really come from states in which people claim their values make them uninterested in or resistant to porn…

Religion, Pornography Use, and Sexual Satisfaction Among American Men

Abstract
Research has often demonstrated a negative association between pornography use and various intrapersonal and relationship outcomes, particularly for men. Several recent studies, however, have suggested that
the negative association between pornography use and these indicators is stronger among more religious Americans, suggesting that moral incongruence (engaging in an activity that violates one's sacred values) and the attendant shame or cognitive
dissonance, rather than the pornography use per se, may be the primary factor at work.
The current study tested and extended this theory by examining how religion potentially moderates the link between pornography use and sexual satisfaction in a national random sample of American adults (N=1,501). Analyses demonstrated that, while pornography use was negatively associated with sexual satisfaction for American men (not women), among men who rarely attended religious services or held a low opinion of the Bible, this negative association essentially disappeared. Conversely, the negative association between frequency of pornography consumption and sexual satisfaction was more pronounced for men with stronger ties to conventional religion. These findings suggest that the connection between pornography use and sexual satisfaction, especially for men, depends largely on what viewing pornography means to the consumer and their moral community, and less so on the practice itself.

In the United States, Internet pornography use is a common behavior that has risen in popularity in recent years. The present study sought to examine potential relationships between pornography use and well-being, with a particular focus on individual perceptions of pornography use and feelings of addiction. Using a large cross-sectional sample of adults (N = 713), perceived addiction to Internet pornography predicted psychological distressabove and beyond pornography use itself and other relevant variables (e.g., socially desirable responding, neuroticism). This model was replicated using a large cross-sectional sample of undergraduates (N = 1,215). Furthermore, a 1-year, longitudinal follow-up with a subset of this sample (N = 106) revealed a relationship between perceived addiction to Internet pornography and psychological distress over time, even when controlling for baseline psychological distress and pornography use. Collectively, these findings suggest that perceived addiction to Internet pornography, but not pornography use itself, is uniquely related to the experience of psychological distress.

During his General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis recalled that June 17 marks the "Day of Conscience".
The day was inspired by the testimony of Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who, eighty years ago, decided to follow his conscience, and in doing so, saved the lives of thousands of Jews and many others who were being persecuted.
In his words on Wednesday, the Pope appealed that “freedom of conscience always and everywhere be respected”. “May every Christian”, he said, “give an example of the consistency of an upright conscience enlightened by the Word of God.”
Act of Conscience
Aristides de Sousa Mendes’s act of conscience was deeply embedded in his Catholic faith. It led him to disregard the direct orders of his government to help those in need.
During the Second World War, de Sousa Mendes, despite knowing the consequences he would face for his actions, issued visas to all refugees regardless of nationality, race, religion, or political opinions.
"I could not have acted otherwise"
This sense of humanity and courage led to his ostracization from the world in which he had lived. He was unable to continue his job as a diplomat and was forbidden from earning a living in order to support his family. His children, too, were prevented from finding gainful employment.
He spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name but was ignored by the Portuguese political regime at the time.
Aristides de Sousa Mendes died in poverty on April 3rd, 1954 at the Franciscan Hospital in Lisbon. But even at the end of his life he knew his actions had been justified in saving thousands of innocent lives. The successful completion of the adolescence stage - is depended on the full acceptance of their sexuality, their sexual orientation.
It is important to understand the time in history that these men were born as far back as the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, especially, prior to

However, from early childhood it had been conveyed to these men, usually in a heightened emotional expression of disgust, which a child experiences 10 times more severe than an adult that homosexuality was evil, a grievous sin that it was deserving of being sent to hell. Now, it is more understandable why a male child growing up gay at 4 and 5 years of age would be terrified in confusion and dissociate from such an adult expressed disapproval over the child’s perceived sexuality, because a child at that age does not have developmental capacity to have any understanding of the meaning of sexuality. Such early childhood traumatic episodes can cause lifelong rippling harmful effects.

These young male teenagers, in the most sincerest good faith - though being in the state of dissociation they unconsciously seamlessly enter the established (1) ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE of seminary that is a heighten level of predominately severe dissociation of repressed homosexuals that is due the (2) Symptoms of GROUPTHINK (unquestioned belief in the morality of the group) that is continuously fortified by the (3) Unsubstantiated Antigay Social and
Religious NORMS and by (4) the unconscious (well-buried and forgotten) traumatic early childhood memories and confusion of being forced, whether implicitly or explicitly or both, to suppress behaviors that had the appearance of a gay sexual orientation as perceived by adults.
A child’s sexual orientation is not about sexual behavior - it is about LOVE, wanting to feel one with another. Depending on the severity of this rejection of a child’s expression of love - the child wants to desperately please his parents and will learn to hid from his parent such emotions of love that are disturbing to them. He will even hide them from himself and thus begins the mental dissociation of this child - attempting to suppress the never ending - regular functioning of his sexual orientation of the emotional impulses - to be loved and to love and to feel one with another.
A person’s sexual orientation like the heart beating, breathing, sexual arousal, etc., are all under the control autonomic nervous system that operates automatically and unconsciously - they cannot be suppressed.
It is interesting to note that the enormous amount of research on sexual orientation that followed in the decades after Dr. Evelyn Hooker’s ground breaking research of 1957 proving that homosexuality is not a mental illness that it is just as normal as being heterosexual that vocations to the priesthood began dropping off. The majority of the members of the RC hierarchy are repressed dissociated homosexuals as is proven by their decades of fierce antigay statements void of the science of homosexuality. It has created a social environment among the RC hierarchy that is immature and surreal - the sexual expressions of their unconscious minds are exposed in an irrational juxtaposition of fierce antigay disgust and a closeted acting out of gay sexual behavior in varying degrees intensity i.e. Cardinal Raymond Burke.
It is the majority of the members of the RC hierarchy - their adamant refusal to even acknowledge the wealth of scientific research on homosexuality that has become more publicly blatant and clear that they are not concern about TRUTH and therefore THEY are not LOVING - not unlike the Trump and Trump’s administration surreal world. TRUTH is attractive and people gravitate to it, because it is life-giving. It is the human need to be part of something greater than ourselves that demands all we have heart, soul and mind. Pupil dilation is an accurate indicator of sexual orientation, a new study finds. When people look at erotic images and become aroused, their pupils open up in an unconscious reaction that could be used to study orientation and arousal without invasive genital measurements.

…TOTENBERG: Gorsuch acknowledged that Congress in 1964 likely did not have the LGBTQ community in mind when it banned discrimination based on sex. But the words of the statute are clear, he said, and several major court rulings since then have read the law expansively - for instance, to bar discrimination against women because they have children and to ban sexual harassment against both women and men. As Gorsuch put it when referring to the law, the limits of the drafters' imagination supply no reason to ignore the law's demands.
At the end of his 33-page opinion, though, Gorsuch did invoke some potential caveats. And he pointed to the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act as a, quote, "super-statute" that may offer a potential lifeline to employers who object, on religious grounds, to hiring gay and trans individuals.

Both John Paul II and Benedict XVI inform us how the maintaining an ongoing DIALOGUE between Science and Religion refine each other and leads us to a fuller meaning of TRUTH. They also give us an emphatic WARNING if there is a BREACH in this DIALOGUE that “comes only at an enormous price to human development…” It seems that this perspective that they shared comes from some traumatic experiences they have from growing up under theterror of the atrocities committed by authoritarian reign of Hitler and the Nazi regime, where the boundaries between science and religion were arbitrarily blurred to give some scientific legitimacy the Nazi ideology. Hitler and the Nazi regime used religious terminology to masked the overwhelming unprecedented brutality of the systematic destruction of humanity that led to 70 million deaths by the end of WWII 1945. Gomez do you truly believe what you wrote - if you wrote it? Did you understand what John Paul wrote in his ENCYCLICAL LETTER,
FIDES ET RATIO - about faith and science the two wings of TRUTH that “God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.” The obvious absence of science in your statement is clear you do not know the TRUTH or yourself. Therefore, your understanding of the meaning of LOVE is so twisted around that it has come to mean the opposite. The U.S. Supreme Court has not redefined the meaning of “sex.” They are not so egoistical as you and your colleagues assume to be. They clarified the meaning of civil rights that is now more inclusive as it should be. Gomez your stances is more of that of Hitler and the Nazi regime removing the civil rights of groups of people that they arbitrarily demean to be less than human.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruling is in no way an injustice, oh yes it will have implications for many people, like yourself, who disregarded science and who formalized their own meaning of truth and have twist the meaning of love to mean the opposite. They wrongly believe that their cruelty and indifference to LGBTQ people is love - as demeaned by god!
The U.S. Supreme Court has not erased “the beautiful differences and complementary relationship between man and woman”, but you and people like yourself have. The U.S. Supreme Court has not “ignore the glory of God’s creation,” nor has the U.S. Supreme Court harmed “the human family, the first building block of society,” but you have by your disregard of the science of human sexuality and your refusal to know yourself!!!

What you are doing is basing your idea of what the image and likeness of God looks like on social and religious norms
(social psychology). Such norms are NOT moral directives - they are simply what everyone is doing. So, if everyone is jumping off a bridge are you going to do the same? The religious norms at the time of Galileo were that Galileo was wrong the earth is flat and that Galileo is a heretic.
