It appears that on some level that Benedict XVI knows he is wrong about gay marriage because he seemingly always states the obvious mistake he is making whenever he excludes gay couples from the idea of traditional marriage.
Defending traditional marriage to the exclusion of gay married couples is backwards thinking. Traditional marriage together with gay marriage are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature, since whatever is injurious to them is injurious to society itself.
The deliberate exclusion of gay married couples would indeed be a misrepresentation of their very nature and whatever is harmful to gay couples in marriage would indeed be harmful to all of society.
And therefore, the Church’s inclusion of heterosexual couples and gay couples as a part of what is known as traditional marriage is the way the Church promotes “those values that permit the full development of the human person.”
It is the non-acceptance to gay people, adults and children that causes devastating harmful effects to the gay adult or child and to all members of their family. There is ample documentation that supports this fact.

Defending traditional marriage is prophetic, not reactionary, pope says - 9/21/12
CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Defending traditional marriage is not an expression of backward thinking, said Pope Benedict XVI, but of values essential to the future of humanity.
"Marriage and the family are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature, since whatever is injurious to them is injurious to society itself," he said.
The pope made his remarks Sept. 21 in a talk to French bishops visiting Rome to report on the status of their dioceses and meet with Vatican officials.
Both France's incoming president, Francois Hollande, and Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault have promised to promote the legalization of same-sex marriage and of adoption by same-sex couples. If the measure passes, France would become the ninth European nation to recognize same-sex marriage. France legalized same-sex civil unions in 1999…

False Inclusiveness Plagues Debate – 10/23/12
In his address at Germany’s Regensburg University in September 2006, Pope Benedict XVI asserted that faith without reason is fanaticism. Although he was not speaking about homosexuality, I think that this point directly applies to that debate. As students at a Jesuit institution, we are called upon to learn through reevaluating our ideas. Combining the ideals of both the Holy Father and the Jesuits, we can conclude that, without questioning what we are told, we run the risk of following others blindly.
In Friday’s issue of THE HOYA, Kieran Raval explained the Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality by referencing various elements of Catholic theological doctrine (“God’s Plan on Sexuality,” A3, Oct. 19, 2012). http://www.thehoya.com/opinion/god-s-plan-for-sexuality-1.2932013 However, as a Catholic, I would like to offer another opinion on the subject of sexual orientation.
Raval states, “Human sexuality is a gift from God that must be ordered according to God’s will and plan … of the spouses (love) and procreation (life).” By writing that homosexuality is “not properly ordered toward the natural and divine telos,” Raval implies that love and life are not part of a homosexual relationship. I would hope that most agree the first point is moot; obviously a relationship is built upon love, regardless of gender. I also take issue with the second point: life. Although homosexual couples cannot conceive a child through sex, this should not prevent them from being together. If gay couples are “disqualified” because of their inability to procreate, so too should barren individuals and women with ovarian cancer be considered “unnatural” in relationships.
Raval responded briefly to this argument saying, “This confuses the distinction between capacity and ability in an ontological sense.” However, his response is an argument about semantics rather than meaning. The regular occurrence and developmental understanding of adolescent homosexual boys' unrequited love affairs with adolescent heterosexual boys are described and explored. Finally, the overstimulation of everyday life is proposed as a new model for understanding certain behavioral aspects of male homosexuality, such as the avoidance of rough-and-tumble play in childhood and homosexual cruising.

In this paper, Dr. Phillips describes the complications of how the historical context of social norms can significantly influence the classification of the components of homosexuality by clinicians causing them to be blind to their own biases. Mindful of our susceptibility to this kind of phenomenon, Dr. Phillips calls to task these biases that pathologize homosexuality simply because it is not consistent with heterosexuality and therefore to be classified as a mental disorder. Social Environment - Although the social environment itself has not been defined as a risk factor for suicide, widespread discrimination against LGBT people, heterosexist attitudes, and gender bias can lead to risk factors such as isolation, family rejection, and lack of access to care providers. Risk factors may interact in unhealthy ways—for example, internalized homophobia or victimization may lead to stress, which is associated with depression and substance abuse, which can contribute to suicide risk. This risk may be compounded by a lack of protective factors that normally provide resilience, such as strong family connections, peer support, and access to effective health and mental health providers…
Herek and colleagues (2007) describe a framework to understand the social environment for sexual minorities. The framework integrates the sociological idea of stigma with the psychological idea of prejudice. Through stigma, society discredits and invalidates homosexuality relative to heterosexuality. Institutions embodying stigma results in heterosexism, and heterosexual individuals internalizing stigma results in prejudice. The United States legal system has faced challenges by sexual minorities and sympathetic heterosexuals that have led to significant changes. However, the legal system continues to reinforce stigma through discriminatory laws and the absence of laws protecting sexual minorities from discrimination in employment, housing, and services. A minority of states had antidiscrimination laws as of 2005, and most of these only referred to employment and not to housing or services.
