South African Roman Catholic clergy and gay-rights activists joined a worldwide chorus condemning a senior Vatican prelate's claims that homosexuality and paedophilia are linked.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone unleashed a storm during a visit to Santiago, Chile, when he said that homosexuality had caused the child sex abuse scandals in the church.
The cardinal, who is the Vatican's foreign minister and Pope Benedict's right-hand man, said on Wednesday: "Many psychologists, many psychiatrists, have demonstrated that there exists no relationship between celibacy and paedophilia, but many others have demonstrated that there is a link between homosexuality and paedophilia."
