Transgender Day of Remembrance - Human Rights Campaign

After the November 1998 murder of Rita Hester, a transgender woman living in the Boston area, Gwendolyn Ann Smith and other organizers formed the "Remembering Our Dead" project and accompanying vigil in San Francisco in 1999.

The annual November 20 observance has grown into the national Transgender Day of Remembrance. It is an opportunity for communities to come together and mark the passing of transgender or those perceived to be transgender individuals who have been murdered because of hate.

Although the day primarily memorializes those lost to hate crimes, it also serves as a forum for transgender communities and allies to raise awareness around the threat of violence faced by gender variant people and the persistence of prejudice felt by the transgender community. Activities also make anti-transgender violence and bigotry visible to such key community groups as police and medical services, the media and elected officials. Communities often include a variety of events including town hall style "teach-ins," photography and poetry exhibits, along with candlelit vigils.

Galileo protest halts pope's [Benedict XVI] visit - January 15, 2008 - Cable News Network (CNN)

ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI has canceled a planned visit to a prestigious Italian university after a protest by academics and students attacked his views on Galileo, the Vatican confirmed Tuesday.

The pope had been due to give a speech at La Sapienza university in Rome Thursday to open its academic year.

However, the visit drew criticism from academics at the university who signed a letter demanding that the trip be called off. Separately, students protested outside the university, carrying banners insisting the university is a lay institution and the pope is not welcome.

"Given the events of the past days regarding the visit of the Holy Father to La Sapienza university upon the rector's invitation, which was scheduled to take place Thursday, January 17, it was decided to postpone the event," the Vatican said in a short written statement.

Father Ciro Benedettini, a spokesman for the Vatican, confirmed to CNN the academic protests had prompted the cancellation.

In the letter, academics -- pointing to a speech the pope gave at the same university as a cardinal in 1990 -- claimed he condones the 1633 trial and conviction of the scientist Galileo for heresy.

The astronomer had argued that the Earth revolved around the Sun, in contradiction to church teachings at the time, and he was forced to renounce his findings publicly.

In comments made 15 years ago when he was still a cardinal, Pope Benedict is reported to have called the trial "reasonable and just."

Gender Nonconformity, Homophobia, and Mental Distress in Latino Gay and Bisexual Men - JOURNAL OF SEX RESEARCH 2007, Vol. 44, No. 2, 181–189

This study explored whether gender nonconformity in gay and bisexual men is related to mental distress and if so, whether this relationship is mediated by negative experiences that are likely associated with gender nonconformity, including abuse and harassment. To study this question, data were analyzed from face-to face interviews with 912 self-identified gay and bisexual Latino men in three major U.S. cities collected by Diaz and colleagues (2001). Gay and bisexual Latino men who considered themselves to be effeminate had higher levels of mental distress and more frequently reported various negative experiences, compared with gay and bisexual Latino men who did not identify as effeminate. Higher levels of mental distress in effeminate men seemed to primarily result from more experiences of homophobia. Findings suggest the need for more attention to gender in research as well as counseling of sexual minority men.

Recent studies using large-scale population-based samples have shown convincingly that compared with heterosexual persons, homosexual men and women are at higher risk for mental health problems (Cochran & Mays, 2000; Cochran, Sullivan, & Mays, 2003; Fergusson, Horwood, & Beautrais, 1999; King et al., 2003; Sandfort, Bakker, Schellevis, & Vanwesembeeck, 2006; Sandfort, de Graaf, Bijl, & Schnabel, 2001; Skegg, Nada-Raja, Dickson, Paul, & Williams, 2003). For example, Cochran and colleagues (2003) found in a U.S. nationally representative survey a higher prevalence of depression, panic attacks, and psychological distress in gay and bisexual men compared to heterosexual men. In the same study, a higher prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder was found in lesbian and bisexual women compared with heterosexual women. These population-based studies, originally not designed to study mental health in relation to sexual orientation, are unable to provide evidence about the causes of the observed differences. The increased rates of mental health problems in homosexual persons are usually understood as a consequence of the stigma attached to homosexuality. This stigma can result in a range of stressful experiences, which have been labeled ‘‘minority stress.’’ Meyer (2003) conceptualizes minority stress as involving a distal-proximal dimension, with stress resulting from objective, external events and conditions, the expectations of such events and the vigilance this expectation requires, the internalization of negative social attitudes, and the concealment of one’s sexual orientation. Support for the minority stresshypothesis is found in studies that have demonstrated that gay men and lesbian women encounter varying levels of stigma, prejudice, and discrimination, and that levels of stress were indeed related to their mental health (Bradford, Ryan, & Rothblum, 1994; Brooks, 1981; Frable, Wortman, & Joseph, 1997; Meyer, 1995; Meyer & Dean, 1998; Ross, 1990; Waldo, Hesson-McInnis, & D’Augelli, 1998). For example, Herek and colleagues (1999), found that gay and bisexual men and women who had experienced victimization because of their sexual orientation (respectively 20% and 25%), manifested significantly more symptoms of depression, anger, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress.

Internalized homophobia and health issues affecting lesbians and gay men – by Iain R. Williamson - Health Education Research - Oxford University Press

Abstract

This paper investigates the concept of internalized homophobia in both theory and research relating to lesbian and gay health. It offers a contemporary and critical review of research in this area, and discusses a range of recent findings relating to a range of health issues including HIV and AIDS. Whilst the concept has a resonance for gay men and lesbians, and is widely used in `lesbian and gay-affirmative' interventions, the paper demonstrates that research findings have been equivocal and the term is often used without full consideration of its sociopolitical consequences. The paper concludes that the concept does have a valuable role to play in health promotion work with lesbians and gay men but invites further discussion and examination of the construct.

Introductory remarks

This paper aims to present both an overview and critical evaluation of the usefulness of the concept of internalized homophobia1 in explaining health difficulties affecting lesbians and gay men. It has been argued by a variety of lesbian and gay social scientists that internalized homophobia has a central role as a predisposing and perpetuating factor in various aspects of ill-health, and may affect both the progression of illness and health-related decision-making processes with significant effect on the prevention of illnesses such as HIV infection. However, a number of theorists have argued that internalized homophobia is both frequently used uncritically with regard to its conceptualization and operationalization, and without due concern for its sociopolitical consequences (i.e. to repathologize the `sick' lesbian or gay individual and focus attention away from the more salient issues of cultural and institutionalized heterosexism). My aim is to provide a synthesis which examines research suggesting an important relationship between health and internalized homophobia whilst deconstructing the concept and offering a discussion of the potential effects on gay and lesbian communities in contemporary British society.

Defining anti-gay and lesbian prejudice and its internalization

There has been considerable discussion within lesbian and gay academic circles about how best to conceptualize the nature of anti-gay and lesbian prejudice. Whilst the term `homophobia' is most widely used within British society, there appears to be a consensus amongst queer3 academics that the term is in many ways unhelpful and inaccurate for a variety of reasons. These include the emphasis on the affective (fear) component of prejudice at the expense of anti-gay and lesbian cognitions, and the contextualization of prejudice within the individual rather than in society and its structures.

Homophobia and Transphobia - Illumination Project Curriculum – 2010 - Andrew S. Forshee, Ph.D., Early Education & Family Studies - Portland Community College, Portland, Oregon

DEFINING THE CONCEPTS ...
An active “toolkit” of terminology helps support the ongoing dialogue, questioning, and understanding about issues of homophobia and transphobia. Clear definitions also provide a context and platform for discussion.

Homophobia: a psychological term originally developed by Weinberg (1973) to define an irrational hatred, anxiety, and or fear of homosexuality. More recently, homophobia is a term used to describe the fear, discomfort, intolerance, or hatred of homosexuality or samesex attraction in others and in oneself (internalized homophobia) (GLSEN, 2002). Examples of homophobia include hate crimes, derogatory comments, jokes that slander, denial of services, and other oppressive actions or beliefs (Bonner Curriculum, 2009). According to Kantor (2009, p. 11), homophobia is categorized into six specific models:

1. Medical Homophobia: the notion that gay, lesbian, and bisexual people are ill and unfit to engage in specific familial and or social opportunities (e.g., raise children, teach, etc.).

2. Religious Homophobia: the idea that gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals are sinful based on any particular faithbase, and may be cured as a result of prayer or other forms of intervention (e.g., reparative therapies).

3. Criminal Homophobia: the fear that gay, lesbian, and bisexual people are committing deplorable illegal acts, including pedophilia.

4. Political Homophobia: the perspective that lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals are good “common cause enemies” for those who want to advance on the social and political ladder (e.g., attracting the conservative vote).

5. Sociocultural Homophobia: the idea that lesbian, gay, and bisexual people live underground and corrupt lives, and “wish” social discord and chaos on the general population. Sociocultural homophobia also upholds the perspective that samesex couples flaunt their affection, wish to dismantle traditional family values, and push their lifestyle on others (e.g., gay pride parades, holding hands in public, samesex marriage).

6. Biological Homophobia: the belief that lesbian, gay, and bisexual people are genetically defective. This perspective also upholds that if there is a genetic “link” to homosexuality, then there must be a cure.

Heterosexism: a system of power, privilege, and advantage that deems heterosexuality as the superior or “normal” sexuality (GLSEN, 2002; Griffin, D’Errico, Harro, & Schiff, 2007). Similar to racism or sexism, heterosexism describes a system that tokenizes, marginalizes individuals based on sexual orientation (Bonner Curriculum, 2009). Heterosexism is perpetuated in all areas of society, including civic organizations, media outlets, financial institutions, educational environments, human services, and faithbased institutions.

What Causes Transsexualism? by Lynn Conway - University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Many causes for transsexualism have been proposed over the years. As discussed earlier in Lynn's TG/TS/IS information, it's long been known from intersex data that the genes do not determine gender identity, and recent follow-ups on intersex infant surgeries show that consistency of "genitals and upbringing" does not determine gender identity.

Instead, current scientific results strongly suggest neurobiological origins for transsexualism: Something appears to happen during the in-utero development of the transsexual child's central nervous system (CNS) so that the child is left with innate, strongly perceived cross-gender body feelings and self-perceptions. We still don't know for sure what causes this neurological development, and more research needs to be done. But the neurobiological direction for these explorations seem clear.

However, even without any scientific evidence to back them up, many psychiatrists and psychologists over the past four decades have simply assumed that transsexualism is a "mental illness". By DEFINING this socially unpopular condition to be a mental illness, these mental health professionals have shaped much of the medical establishment's and society's views of transsexuals as psychopathological "sexual deviants".

This page is an investigative report that describes and contrasts the older "mental illness" concept of transsexualism with more recently emerging scientific evidence of neurobiological bases for innate gender identity in humans.

Rhode Island Catholics Support Gay Marriage – 2:1! - Gay Agenda

…The two factors most commonly quoted as reasons for the failure to secure gay marriage have been the implacable opposition of the current governor Don Carcieri, and the high proportion of Catholic voters. (At 46%, this is the highest in the US). However, a new state level poll confirms what has become apparent at the national level. Support for marriage equality has grown, local Catholics support gay marriage – and support has grown faster among Catholics than among other groups…

…There are effectively twice as many Catholics who support equality, as those who oppose it – providing their are suitable assurances that it applies only to civil marriage, and on the separation of church and state. Bishop Tobin is on a losing battle.
Politicians are addicted to reading the public mood. With two thirds of Rhode Islanders now saying they approve of legal recognition of same sex marriages, and a convincing majority of Catholics agreeing, the will be very few state legislators next year who would want to resume their previous opposition- and the smoke screen that so many of the voters are Catholic will be blown away by the knowledge that local Catholics seem to put Catholic commitment to justice ahead of blind obedience to Bishops and patently flawed Vatican body theology. Rhode Island - Poll: Public support for same-sex marriage grows - Maria Armental - Providence Journal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A poll on same-sex marriage released Wednesday shows that support for legalizing same-sex marriage in Rhode Island is growing while opposition is decreasing.

“It shows, for the first time, a convincing majority of Rhode Island voters supporting equality,” said David Walker, vice president of Greenberg Quinlan and Rosner Research, a Democratic polling firm based in Washington, D.C., that conducted the poll in July…

…When pollsters clarified the question pertained to civil marriages and that church and state would remain separate, 66 percent said they would favor legalizing same-sex marriage, with 28 percent saying they opposed it. Among those who identified themselves as Catholics, 63 percent said they would favor it, 32 percent said they oppose it. “Rhode Islanders are ready to include loving, committed same-sex couples in civil marriage and gain the dignity and respect that marriage brings, along with all the legal rights and protections,” said Kathy J. Kushnir, executive director of Marriage Equality Rhode Island.

The bill has stalled every year since former Rep. Michael Pisaturo, D-Cranston, introduced the first same-sex marriage proposal in 1997.

Same Sex Unions In Pre-Modern Europe, by John Boswell

Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe. By John Boswell.

Bennison, Charles, Book reviews.., Vol. 77,
Anglican Theological Review, 04-01-1995, pp 256.

To have met John Boswell, the A. Whitney Griswold Professor of History at Yale, whose premature death late last year is an ineffable tragedy for both the academy and the church, was to have come into the presence of a brilliant, learned, engaging, talkative, and insistent man. In his Sam-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe, the much-anticipated and long- awaited sequel to his award-winning Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality (1980), Professor Boswell has left as his principal legacy a brilliant, learned, engaging, talkative, and insistent argument that the ancient and medieval church celebrated the same-sex equivalent of its heterosexual marriage ceremony.

One would not absolutely have to be gay to write this book, but it certainly helped. Boswell was gay--indeed, the first openly gay individual to be granted tenure at an ivy league university. While asserting that "it is not the province of the historian to direct the actions of future human beings, but only to reflect accurately on those of the past," the historical reality he in this book is able to construct is advantaged by his social location in a nation and church embroiled in a culture war over the issue of the normative status of homosexuality. In the face of "the psychological landscape of the modern West," which he describes as obsessed with romantic love, "causally interrelated and largely coterminous" with heterosexual marriage, and as filled with "a salient horror of homosexuality," he comes down on the opposite side of the "epistemological divide" among those for whom "it is relatively easy to recognize and absorb ideas about a ceremony of same-sex union, because they have a place to locate the information"

This is to say, not that Boswell is careless with history, but that he brings to the over sixty manuscripts "containing ceremonies of same-sex union" he consults a hermeneutic not exercised heretofore. One strength of the book, in fact, is the modesty of the claims he makes based on the texts before him. "Speculation," he volunteers, "has been kept to a minimum, although many questions remain unanswered by the sources." Read more:

The History of LGBTS at Yale - John Boswell

The Origins of Lesbian and Gay Studies at Yale, 1980-1994

Yale has played a leading role in the development of LGBT and queer studies for almost thirty years. In 1980, the Yale medievalist John Boswell published Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality: Gay People in Western Europe from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Fourteenth Century. This magisterial, highly acclaimed, and highly controversial study argued that the modern Catholic Church's condemnation of homosexuality departed from the tolerance and even celebration of homosexual love that had characterized the first millennium of the Church's teachings. The book's electrifying implications for one of the central religious debates of our time made Boswell the best known gay studies scholar of his day. Its phenomenal erudition also earned him an American Book Award and helped establish the scholarly rigor and compelling significance of gay studies.

Six years later, Boswell chaired a committee of faculty and students that established the Lesbian and Gay Studies Center at Yale (LGSCY, or "Legacy"), one of the first such centers in the nation and the predecessor of today's LGBTS. Read more: LGBT Studies at Yale University
