On Gay Priests “Who am I to Judge?”

Pope Francis
We have to find a new balance; otherwise
even the moral edifice of the church is likely to
FALL LIKE A HOUSE OF CARDS,
losing the freshness and fragrance
of the Gospel.
Pope Francis
SCIENCE can purify religion from error and superstition;
RELIGION can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.
Each can draw the other into a wider world,
a world in which both can flourish.
For the truth of the matter is that the Church and the scientific community will inevitably interact; their options
DO NOT include ISOLATION.
Pope John Paul II - 1988
…TRUTH is the light that gives meaning and value to CHARITY. That light is both the light of REASON and the light of FAITH, through which the intellect attains to the natural and supernatural truth of charity: it grasps its meaning as GIFT, acceptance, and communion. WITHOUT truth, charity degenerates into SENTIMENTALITY. Love becomes an EMPTY SHELL, to be filled in an ARBITRARY way. In a CULTURE without truth, this is the FATAL risk facing love. It FALLS prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word “love” is abused and distorted,to the point where it comes to MEAN the opposite. Truth FREES charity from the constraints of an EMOTIONALISM that deprives it of relational and social content, and of a FIDEISM that deprives it of human and universal breathing-space. In the truth, charity reflects the personal yet public dimension of faith in the God of the Bible, who is both Agápe and Lógos: Charity and Truth, Love and Word…
REASON always stands in need of being purified by faith: this also holds true for political reason, which must not consider itself OMNIPOTENT. For its part, RELIGION always needs to be purified by reason in order to show its authentically human face. Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development…
Pope Benedict XVI 2007 2009

Congregation for Clergy
The Gift of the Priestly Vocation
dated Thursday, December 8, feast of the Immaculate Conception
Vatican reiterates that homosexuals shouldn’t be priests - Dec 7, 2016
…has reiterated that men with “deeply rooted homosexual tendencies” shouldn’t be admitted into Catholic seminaries and, therefore, shouldn’t become Catholic priests…
In fairness - this statement should be stated - that men with “deeply rooted heterosexual tendencies” shouldn’t be admitted into Catholic seminaries and, therefore, shouldn’t become Catholic priests.
However, the statement made in Dec. 2016 - not only speaks to the hypocrisy of the members of the curia and hierarchy of the Congregation for the Clergy who authored this baloney, but to all for allowing it to be published without public protest. The statement is not only indirectly an action of voluntary ignorance (resulting from negligence regarding something one should have known) of the science on sexual orientation researched and authoritatively accepted - over the 60 past years but it blatantly reaffirms the entrenched corruption of dissociated homosexual culture existing among the majority of the members of the curia and hierarchy.
In addition - this statement made by the curia and hierarchy - publicly defies the ENCYCLICAL LETTERS - of both Saint Pope John Paul II, FIDES ET RATIO, 1998 and Benedict XVI, CARITAS IN VERITATE, 2007 (curial delayed publication till 2009), including John Paul II letter 1988 to the Reverend George V. Coyne SJ, Director of the Vatican Observatory: - all emphatically stating that science and religion must never be separated - an open and ongoing dialogue must be maintained. Benedict XVI explained that truth shines forth from both the light of faith and the light of reason and that without truth there is no love. Benedict XVI makes the stern warning, as if speaking from experiences of growing up in Nazi Germany, stating “Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development…”
It is a wonder that lightning didn’t come down and once again - strike the top of Saint Peter’s Basilica, as it did twice just hours after Benedict XVI resigned on February 11, 2013. It is just like - Hitler and the Nazi regime - how they built their edifice of the Third Reich from 1933 to 1945 based on Hitler’s arbitrary and irrational formulation of the pseudoscience of racial purity and presented it in pseudo-religious terminology. It was this false dehumanizing edifice of Nazism that led them to starting WWII and that ended falling, destroying them and much of Germany. By the end of World War II more than 70 million people died, equivalent to “wiping-out” the entire populations of both (a) the state of Michigan with 10 million people and (b) the country of Italy with 60 million people. It is “considered the single most destructive event in human history (Less Than Human - by David Livingstone Smith - The Psychology Of Cruelty - http://www.npr.org/2011/03/29/134956180/criminals-see-their-victims-as-less-than-human).” The Second World War from 1939-to 1945 was a global war. It was the most widespread war in history that involved over 100 million people, activated the total resources (economic, industrial, scientific capabilities) of 30 countries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II)..
Hitler's Place in History
Professor of Modern History at Sheffield University
Wednesday 27th April 2005
…How, then, should we look upon Hitler’s place in history? Primarily, as the inspiration of the most lethal and destructive war in history, and of the most terrible genocide the world has ever seen. He left behind him not just physical, but also moral, ruination such as history has never previously experienced. He represented an extreme pathology of modern society. He showed us the most radical face of modern inhumanity – how an advanced society can undergo a breathtaking descent into modern barbarity that’s quite without precedent. That’s what, with the passage of time, we can see was historically defining about Hitler. Never before Hitler’s time had we seen so clearly what human beings are capable of…
…we shouldn’t mystify Hitler’s personality. The uniqueness of Nazism can’t be reduced to that strange personality. Another time, another place, and Hitler would have had no impact at all. He couldn’t have derailed a modern society without that society itself making a major contribution to its own fate… We shouldn’t be complacent about the future. New forms of fascism and racial intolerance rightly appal and worry us…
…what we can do is to remind ourselves of the essential point about Hitler: he represented the most fundamental and frontal assault ever launched on all that we associate with humanity and civilisation.

Exploiting Conservative Elites - Homosexual Prejudices
1933 - Hitler Becomes Dictator
Your ignorance, your collective repressed homosexual dissociation (your la-la land mental state), the organizational cultural environment of the curia and the hierarchy (except for a courageous few) refusing to follow the ENCYCLICAL LETTERS of both Saint Pope John Paul II, FIDES ET RATIO, 1998 and Benedict XVI, CARITAS IN VERITATE, 2007 (curial delayed publication till 2009), including John Paul II letter 1988 to the Reverend George V. Coyne SJ, Director of the Vatican Observatory: - all emphatically stating that science and religion must never be separated that - an open and ongoing dialogue must be maintained - your refusal to do so regarding the topic of homosexuality - has obscured the truth and love about gay sexual orientation.
What is more deadly than the atrocities committed and caused by Hitler and the Nazi Regime leaving over 70 million people dead at the end of World War II - is that your collective refusal to dialogue about the science of homosexuality - has allowed this your voluntary comatose denial state of reality to be exploited by person or persons with extreme malicious intent and diabolical strategies to gain destructive power over others all for monetary wealth.
You are and have been setting the stage allowing for the exact same kind of exploitation of the antigay societal prejudices of Germany that Hitler and the Nazi regime used in their propaganda tactics before national election of March 5, 1933. Hitler, having already been appointed the Chancellor of Germany, in January of 1933, though still wanting total and complete power over all of Germany - he strategically planned to make a major nationwide explosive news event to be highlighted in all of Germany’s newspapers and broadcasts of his ordering the police closure of 15 gay and lesbian bars in Berlin, the capital of Germany to take place on March 4, 1933, the day before the election. The event was reported in the Berliner Tageblatt (Berlin Daily, newspaper- http://germanhistorydocs.ghi-dc.org/sub_image.cfm?image_id=2049). Hitler purposefully orchestrated this event - to lure the support of the conservative elites, by catering to their homosexual prejudges - not to win the election on March 5, 1933. He did it to use their support after the election to vote in favor of passing the Enabling Act of 1933, which was passed and that immediately led to Hitler becoming the dictator of Germany..

Exploiting Societal Homosexual Prejudices
Hitler - Staged ‘immorality trials’
Against Catholic Clergy
Against Catholic Clergy
As dictator, Hitler and the Nazi Party continued to feed on the use of the same propaganda exploitation of German’s antigay prejudices - to launch their ruthless and lethal campaign against their feared anti-nazi opposition of the Catholic Church.
A History of Christianity,
by Owen Chadwick, 1996
…In July 1933 pope Pius XI shocked the democratic world by signing a concordat with Hitler, which was very favorable to the rights of the Catholic churches in the German states. The Nazis had no intention of keeping this agreement and gradually move towards outright 'repression; the stage persecution of monks for homosexuality, with the maximum of publicity. In 1937 Pius issued an encyclical, Mit brennender Sorge (‘With burning anxiety’), in which he listed all the breaches of the concordat committed by the Germans (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2316392.A_History_of_Christianity p 254)."
In 1937, Hitler and the Nazis were “infuriated" by condemnations that Pope Pius XI directed against Nazism in his encyclical Mit brennender Sorge (http://w2.vatican.va/content/pius-xi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xi_enc_14031937_mit-brennender-sorge.html). The encyclical “Mit brennender Sorge" was drafted by Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli (the future Pope Pius XII, March 2, 1939 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Pius_XII ) “and read from the pulpits of all German Catholic churches, it criticized Hitler, detailed Nazi crimes and condemned Nazi ideology (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mit_brennender_Sorge#Catholic_response).” Pope Pius XI called on the clergy to refute the errors of Nazism. “The Nazis, who had brutally squashed most other critics, branded this encyclical a ’call to Battle against the Reich.’ Hitler vowed revenge against the church (Frank J. Coppa, The Papacy, the Jews, and the Holocaust- 2006, p 162, http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4102687-the-papacy-the-jews-and-the-holocaust).”
From the extensive historical documentation, along with the supporting evidence presented at the Nuremberg war-crimes trials of 1945 and 1946 - a horrific picture is obtained of the extreme pathology and barbarity of the crimes against humanity committed by Hitler and the Nazi Regime (http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0022009404042130). Through the documentation of one of “the leading United States investigators at Nuremberg, Gen. William J. Donovan (http://www.nytimes.com/2002/01/13/weekinreview/word-for-word-case-against-nazis-hitler-s-forces-planned-destroy-german.html)” we learn the facts of the unprecedented severe brutality of Hitler’s revenge inflicted on the Catholic Church, that followed in the wake of the distribution of “Mit brennender Sorge” the encyclical of Pope Pius XI in 1937. Gen. William J. Donovan’s records stored at Cornell University were released through the collaborative efforts between Cornell and Rutgers Universities in 1999, known as the Nuremberg Project. “The outline, ‘The Persecution of the Christian Churches,’ summarizes the Nazi plan to subvert and destroy German Christianity, which it calls ‘an integral part of the National Socialist scheme of world conquest.’” From these records - it was clear that Hitler did not want to make martyrs out of the Catholic priests. Hitler wanted them to died as criminals.
Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minster of propaganda orchestrated the attacks by once again exploiting German societal prejudices against homosexuals - to obscure Hitler’s real motive of revenge that not only was meant to destroy the Catholic clergy, but the Catholic Church as well. Goebbels was aware that an outwardly attack on the anti-nazi opposition of the Catholic clergy, would not be possible for fear of a public outrage would then be directed at Hitler and the Nazi Regime and make martyrs out of the priests they attacked and killed.
Joseph Goebbels
Reich Minister of Propaganda - Nazi Germany 1933 to 1945
Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda
Instead, Goebbels by exploiting homosexual prejudices he made these attacks against the Catholic clergy look like, again as it did on March 4, 1933 - Hitler’s efforts of being tough on crime. He did this by staging massive public trails of false accusations charging the clergy of the crime of homosexuality, because, at the time, homosexuality was a punishable crime under German law. Through Goebbels’s deceptive propaganda tactics - he not only succeeded in (1) covering up Hitler’s true intent, his barbaric revenge, he (2) silenced, and removed to concentration camps the opposition of the Catholic clergy. In addition, at the same time he was destroying the reputation of both, (3) the Catholic clergy and (4) the Catholic Church, while (5) arousing public violence against the Church and making public statement to (6) instill fear and intimidated others from speaking against Nazism.
Hitler and the Nazi exploited the social homosexual prejudices of the conservative elites not only to help propel him into the dictatorship of Germany, but to justify his massacre of 150 to 200 victims in the event known as the “Night of the Long Knives” late June 1934, and to cover-up his lethal revenge against the Catholic clergy giving his approval to Goebbels to begin the public staged false accusations of homosexuality in the ‘immorality trials’ against clergy. It is overwhelming and devastating to even try to realize that the societal prejudices against homosexuals, consistently dominant among the conservative elites, played such a significant part among the complexities of a multitude of layers of contributing factors that led to what is considered the single most destructive and barbaric war in human history responsible for the deaths of millions of people - knowing that beginning in 1957 and in the following years all those prejudices against homosexuality through authoritative scientific method were all empirically proven to be non-existent.
Hitler's speech to the Reichstag Jan. 30, 1939 and “Europe"
Word for Word/The Case Against the Nazis; How Hitler's Forces Planned To
Destroy German Christianity - By Joe Sharkey - January 13, 2002
…In July 1933, a Concordat was signed between the Reich and the Holy See (http://www.americamagazine.org/issue/448/article/vatican-concordat-hitlers-reich).
’’For the first time since the Middle Ages, the Reich itself had entered into an agreement with the Roman Catholic Church,'' the outline says. ''Moreover, the new treaty was apparently entirely to the advantage of the church. In return for the retreat of German Catholicism from the political scene, the church was guaranteed, by international treaty, freedom for Catholic organizations [and] maintenance of denominational schools and youth education.''
…The Concordat was hailed by church and state authorities as marking the beginning of a close and fruitful collaboration.''
Of course, the churches stayed in Hitler's good graces for only as long as the Nazis considered their cooperation expedient. Soon after Hitler assumed dictatorial powers, ''relations between the Nazi state and the church became progressively worse,'' the outline says. The Nazis ''took advantage of their subsequently increasing strength to violate every one of the Concordat's provisions.''
In 1937, Pope Pius XI denounced Nazi treachery in an encyclical that accused Hitler of ''a war of extermination'' against the church. The battle had been joined on some fronts. Nazi street mobs, often in the company of the Gestapo, routinely stormed offices in Protestant and Catholic churches where clergymen were seen as lax in their support of the regime.
…Still, in a society where the entire Jewish population was being automatically condemned without public protest, care was taken to manipulate public perceptions about clergymen who fell into Nazi disfavor. ''The Catholic Church need not imagine that we are going to create martyrs,'' Robert Wagner, the Nazi Gauleiter of Baden, said in a speech, according to the O.S.S. study. ''We shall not give the church that satisfaction. She shall have not martyrs, but criminals.'' …

…In February 1937 Hitler made it plain to his inner circle that he did not want a ‘Church struggle’ at this juncture. The time was not ripe for it…The anti-clericalism and anti-Church sentiments of the grass-roots Party activists simply could not be eradicated…The stranglehold that the Churches maintained over the values and mentalities of large sections of the population was an obvious thorn in the side of a Movement with its own highly intolerant ‘world-view’, which saw itself as making a total claim on soul as well as body. The assault on the practices and institutions of the Christian Churches was deeply embedded in the psyche of National Socialism…
At the same time, the activists could draw on the verbal violence of Party leaders towards the Churches for their encouragement. Goebbels’s orchestrated attacks on the clergy through the staged ‘immorality trials’ of Franciscans in 1937 – following usually trumped-up or grossly exaggerated allegations of sexual impropriety in the religious orders – provided further ammunition. And, in turn, however much Hitler on some occasions claimed to want a respite in the conflict, his own inflammatory comments gave his immediate underlings all the licence they needed to turn up the heat in the ‘Church struggle’, confident that they were ‘working towards the Führer’.
Hitler’s impatience with the Churches prompted frequent outbursts of hostility. In early 1937, he was declaring that ‘Christianity was ripe for destruction’ (Untergang) , and that the Churches must yield to the ‘primacy of the state’, railing against any compromise with ‘the most horrible institution imaginable’…However, he indicated that at some point in the future Church and state would be separated, the Concordat of 1933 between the Reich and the Vatican dissolved (to provide the regime with a free hand), and the entire force of the Party turned to ‘the destruction of the clerics (Pfaffen)’…
Addressing the Gauleiter in mid-March, Hitler announced that he wanted ‘no ordinary victory’ over the Churches. Either one should keep quiet about an opponent (totschweigen), or slay him (totschlagen), was how he put it. In April, Goebbels reported with satisfaction that the Führer was becoming more radical in the ‘Church Question’, and had approved the start of the ‘immorality trials’ against clergy. Goebbels noted Hitler’s verbal attacks on the clergy and his satisfaction with the propaganda campaign on several subsequent occasions over the following few weeks…

Homosexually Obsessed
Cardinal Raymond Burke and Coprophilia
Hidden and “MALICIOUS RESISTANCE”
No Science - No Religion - No Truth - No Love
People Being Killed
No EMPATHY
The silly but lethal games Cardinal Raymond Burke plays with his accomplices attacking others - the hidden and “MALICIOUS RESISTANCE” have been well over played - to excessive to say the least that their DNA is easily identified. This is true especially after Burke’s endless tirade that began immediately after the 2014 Synod on Family - midterm report was released on October 14, 2014. The midterm report revealed that an open discussion took place on how to be more supportive pastorally in welcoming of gay people and their families, including valuing gay loving and committed relationships (excerpts from this report posted above). This report took the world by surprise.
However, Burke having been released from holding the top most powerful position in the Catholic Church and from all his other positions of Church authority, happened not yet quite a month prior to the release date of the Synod 2014 midterm report - he seemed unaware, at the time, that he was no longer protected by the curia’s thick shield of bureaucratic anonymity. This meant that everything he said publicly and how he said it was being recorded by the news media, he personally exposed a DNA sample of the kind of “MALICIOUS RESISTANCE” that has been going on for the past 30 years. His present tiff with Pope Francis is his "dubia" (from the Latin: “doubts”) concerning the pope’s document Amoris Laetitia that he is publicly demanding yes-or-no answers to 5 questions he has about it. Sounds simple and reasonable to an uninformed observer - but it is a trap to force the Pope into a corner. It is a dirty trick that has been played recently and endlessly for the past 30 years to remove people from their positions in the Church or the priesthood. It is a ruthless and deceptive practice full of coprophilia intrigue and always connected to silencing and removing anyone who is either supportive of gay people or openly discusses the emerging science on homosexuals - the science that has been emerging since the completion of Dr. Evelyn Hooker, her most notable and ground breaking research proving that homosexuality is not a mental illness of 1957. Burke and his accomplices reek of the smell of it. It is this DNA smell that stretches as far back as the Hunthausen affair in the 1980s. One researcher by the name of Timothy Peter Schilling (Conflict in the Catholic Hierarchy: a study of coping strategies in the Hunthausen affair, with preferential attention to discursive strategies 2003) calls it Perspective Shift.
Burke has adamantly refused to enter into any open dialogue on the science and scriptural aspects of homosexual sexual orientation nor does he want to allow anyone else to enter into an open dialogue on this subject.
Burke has publicly demonstrated his not so subtle animosity for gay people, since the Synod session of 2014 and that escalated in ruthless hostility throughout the following months right on through the final Synod session on Family of 2015. Burke and his accomplices - literally attacked anyone supportive of gay people, especially including Pope Francis though covertly under the disguise leaking false rumors that Pope Francis had a brain tumor and evil and dark plans of unsubstantiated conspiracies. All aimed at discrediting Pope Francis's reputation, to destabilize the Synod 2015 proceedings - and most of all - to prevent the final open discussion on gay people and their relationships scheduled to take place in the Synod session of 2015, which they succeeded in accomplishing.
From then on Burke has been relentless in attacking Pope Francis for his plain simple human respect that he has shown for gay people and their families - as he has shown endlessly for all people and teaching by example that others should do the same. Burke's public "dubia" and threats of “a formal act of correction of a serious error” are unwarranted attacks against Pope Francis, generated since the fall of 2016. Burke's and his accomplices are however, by attacking Pope Francis - they are making public the kind of ruthless attacks that so many priests, sisters, theologians, religious orders, including myself have endured and suffered the tragic consequences of. It is an unfortunate form of validation of the crimes they have committed, but it is a validation nonetheless - and their criminal activity is all completely without any judicial oversight. In the 1980s - Archbishop Hunthausen also notes absence of - the nonexistence judicial oversight when he asks that the curia members - his hearers of his case - to evaluate the “justice” of Church procedures according to the standards of civil law. No Catholic Church protection from people like Burke and his distorted perception of reality - at the top - down even for Archbishops or children.

BISHOPS AND VATICAN: U.S. PRELATES TREAD A FINE LINE - September 18, 1986
America's Roman Catholic bishops have largely been silent about the dramatic decision by the Vatican disciplining one of their colleagues, Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen of Seattle, because they are caught in a dilemma involving their own authority…
…Those bishops who have spoken have generally been measured in their response…But a few expressed anger, with Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton, an Auxiliary Bishop in Detroit, using surprisingly strong terms such ''cruel'' and ''demeaning'' in describing the Vatican's treatment of Archbishop Hunthausen.
Bishop Gumbleton said the Vatican's action would ''intimidate'' the American bishops. Fear of Intimidation
' 'They'll always be looking over their shoulder to see who's watching and afraid to speak or act,'' he said. ''It's a serious loss if every bishop is afraid to act out of his own faith commitment, but only act on the basis of what he thinks somebody else wants him to do.'' …
…While the charges against Archbishop Hunthausen have only been phrased in the most general terms, conservative critics have accused the Seattle Archdiocese of an overly generous policy on marriage annulments, of permitting churches to use altar girls, and of tolerating too frequent use of a general absolution of sins rather than individual confession. Archbishop Hunthausen also permitted the use of his cathedral for a mass by Dignity, an organization of homosexual Catholics.
But many bishops, liberally interpreting Vatican guidelines, have condoned similar departures in their dioceses. Thus, many bishops believe that the action against Archbishop Hunthausen reflects the continuing effort by the Vatican, as in the Curran affair, to pressure the American bishops into greater allegiance to orthodox Catholic teaching. Conservatives Pleased…
…The bishops who have spoken out critically are those whose view of the church is a more diverse and democratic one, who believe that decisions by the Vatican should be made in consultation with the American bishops more familiar with the nuances of Catholic life here.
''It certainly strikes me from a distance as being part of the effort to centralize, to control,'' said Bishop Leroy T. Matthiesen of Amarillo, Tex., in a telephone interview…

The Charles Curran Case: From - March 29, 1986
The Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, after having reviewed the matter with the Holy Father, has written the Rev. Charles E. Curran a letter dated Sept. 17, 1985, to inform Father Curran that he can no longer teach Catholic theology in the name of the church unless he retracts certain positions having to do mostly with sexual morality. Since the threatened loss of Father Curran's theology professorship at The Catholic University of America is similar to a controverted censure previously imposed on the Rev. Hans Kung, there is sure to be concern within much of the American theological community. This is all the more true because many moralists, including Father Curran, regard his positions as well within the mainstream of present-day Catholic theology. Even a preliminary review of the principal issues in this case reveals their potential for causing disruption within the American Catholic community unless they are addressed with both clarity and charity.
Dissent from authoritative but noninfallible teaching of the church. This is the crux. If a teaching is not infallible. Father Curran maintains, dissent from it is in principle possible, and in certain circumstances justifiable. In fact, he came to be known in 1968 as spokesman for theologians who dissented from the teaching of Humanae Vitae that artificial contraception is always evil. Cardinal Ratzinger disallows that dissent, as well as certain other of Father Curran's positions that he says vary from the church's authoritative, noninfallible teaching on homosexuality, masturbation, premarital sex, abortion and euthanasia. The Cardinal cites Vatican II's "Constitution on the Church" (No. 25), which calls for "submission of mind and will" to teaching of this sort, and also Canon 752 of the new Code, which incorporates the thought of Vatican II on the matter. But to see how inconclusive citations can be, one has only to read the commentary of the Canon Law Society of America on c. 752: "Dissent is possible because the teachers mentioned in the canon [Supreme Pontiff and College of Bishops] can be and de facto have been mistaken.”…

SEATTLE – John McCoy followed the tumultuous story of Seattle Archbishop Emeritus Raymond G. Hunthausen for years, as a Seattle journalist and later as an archdiocesan spokesman.

America Magazine - September 22, 2015
John McCoy, an excellent writer, tells an insider’s account of the public humiliation of Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen of Seattle [“A Still and Quiet Conscience: The Archbishop Who Challenged a Pope, a President, and a Church,”]…
…The Vatican seemed unimpressed that, under Hunthausen’s leadership, Seattle exceeded the national average on Mass attendance, adult conversions to the church and monetary contributions by some 20 percent…
…Beginning in the late 1970s Hunthausen began to speak out and protest against the buildup of nuclear weapons, especially the Trident submarine, harbored near Seattle. He showed up at a protest in 1978 but stated, “I’m here out of my own personal conviction. Not here as the archbishop.” Later, as the Reagan administration built up the nuclear arsenal, Hunthausen publicly stated that he was withholding his taxes and giving them to charity “in resistance to nuclear murder and suicide.”
Unfortunately for Hunthausen, a kind of entente cordial grew between the Reagan administration and the Vatican. Reagan recognized the Vatican diplomatically and gave information to Vatican officials about the Communist bloc. Many in the Reagan administration (especially Catholics, including Reagan’s secretary of the navy, secretary of state, director of the C.I.A., and national security advisor) asked Cardinal Ratzinger to make an example of one of the U.S. bishops who was anti-war. The Vatican sent Cardinal James Hickey of Washington, D.C., as an apostolic visitor. Hunthausen was accused of alleged liturgical abuses, inability to enforce church law, laxity in allowing annulments to marriages, being soft on abortion and being too lenient toward homosexuals (the diocese had allowed a Dignity Mass in the cathedral)…
Notably, Hunthausen was one of the first archbishops to deal forthrightly with the clergy abuse issue. He turned over priest pedophiles to the law and said, in a letter to all his priests sent in 1988, that he would name pedophile priests and asked the priests to follow procedures if a victim came forward. Jason Berry, the first journalist to break the priest pedophile story, said, “Hunthausen was the first archbishop to deal with this problem publicly. The fact that Hunthausen spoke out and was so forthright—you cannot overestimate that!”
Hunthausen was investigated, punished and humiliated. He had no official legal representation, no right of appeal, no due process or access to the report of the allegations made against him to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith…

Charles Curran to retire from full-time teaching - May. 15, 2014
..From the 1960s, Curran had questioned church teaching on artificial contraception. In the 1970s, he argued for the moral legitimacy of same-sex unions. He challenged the church to allow for the legitimacy of divorce and remarriage in some cases…
…“To more liberal Catholics, I was a saint, to more conservative Catholics, the devil,” Curran wrote in Loyal Dissent, his 2006 memoir. “The reality seems to me to fall somewhere between the two extremes, but my symbolic role created quite a bit of controversy in those days.”…

Curran: Papacy should admit some of its teachings are wrong - Nov. 21, 2014
Shortly after October's extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the family concluded in Rome, NCR asked Fr. Charles Curran, the Elizabeth Scurlock University Professor of Human Values at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and a noted moral theologian, for his impressions. Following is the text of the interview.
NCR: What pleased you most about the synod?
Curran: The fact that bishops and cardinals publicly disagreed with one another in their attempt to discern what is good for the church. We have really not had this experience since the open debates of the Second Vatican Council. The one negative aspect about all this was that the press was not allowed into the synod itself to hear the actual discussion, but only found out about the discussions after the fact.
What disappointed you most?
The fact that not only did the synod not change any teaching in the church, but even those who were in favor of pastoral change insisted they were not changing the teaching of the church. This came through especially in the debate about full participation in the Eucharist for divorced and remarried Catholics. In my judgment, we have to change some of our specific moral teachings with regard to sexual morality…
You have written that Catholic theology is "act-based" and not "intention-based," as you would like it to be. How did we get to this act-based theology? What's wrong with this approach?
…The problem with the Catholic approach is using the nature of the faculty as the criterion for discovering whether an act is right or wrong. One can never see the power or faculty of sexuality apart from the human person and the human person apart from one's relationship to other persons. Thus, for example, for the good of the person or the good of the marriage, one could and should at times interfere with the procreative purpose of the sexual faculty. In the same manner then, one could justify homosexual relations and unions on the basis of what is good for the human person and the human person's relationships…

Pope Francis
We have to find a new balance; otherwise
even the moral edifice of the church is likely to
FALL LIKE A HOUSE OF CARDS,
losing the freshness and fragrance
of the Gospel.
Pope Francis
SCIENCE can purify religion from error and superstition;
REASON always stands in need of being purified by faith: this also holds true for political reason, which must not consider itself OMNIPOTENT. For its part, RELIGION always needs to be purified by reason in order to show its authentically human face. Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development…

BETWEEN HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS
June 3, 2003
INTRODUCTION
1. In recent years, various questions relating to homosexuality have been addressed with some frequency by Pope John Paul II and by the relevant Dicasteries of the Holy See.(1) Homosexuality is a troubling moral and social phenomenon, even in those countries where it does not present significant legal issues. It gives rise to greater concern in those countries that have granted or intend to grant – legal recognition to homosexual unions, which may include the possibility of adopting children. The present Considerations do not contain new doctrinal elements; they seek rather to reiterate the essential points on this question and provide arguments drawn from reason which could be used by Bishops in preparing more specific interventions, appropriate to the different situations throughout the world, aimed at protecting and promoting the dignity of marriage, the foundation of the family, and the stability of society, of which this institution is a constitutive element. The present Considerations are also intended to give direction to Catholic politicians by indicating the approaches to proposed legislation in this area which would be consistent with Christian conscience.(2) Since this question relates to the natural moral law, the arguments that follow are addressed not only to those who believe in Christ, but to all persons committed to promoting and defending the common good of society…

Pope’s takeover of Knights of Malta brings chance for needed reform
By Austen Ivereigh - January 29, 2017
…It was Burke’s attempt to use Pope Francis’s authority as part of an internal power-play by Festing in December to remove his rival Boeselager that prompted the papal putsch…
The president of the order’s German Association, Erich Lobkowicz, has described the struggle as “a battle between all that Pope Francis stands for and a tiny clique of ultraconservative frilly old diehards in the Church - diehards that have missed the train in every conceivable respect.”
…Emboldened by Burke, Festing tried to sack Boeselager in early December on grounds of disobedience, after the German refused to stand down at the Englishman’s request.
The grounds for his removal were manufactured by a militant traditionalist organization close to Burke, the Lepanto Institute for the Restoration of All Things in Christ…
…In his letter that followed the meeting the pope made clear that Catholic moral precepts must be followed but that differences should be resolved through dialogue rather than expulsions.
But the letter was used by Burke as a justification for sacking Boeselager against the pope’s express wishes…
But it was Burke’s disobedience to the pope that was the real issue…

Knights of Malta leader: Vatican stepped in to protect pope's name - Feb. 2, 2017
ROME The Knights of Malta leader whose firing touched off a showdown between the order and Pope Francis says he believes the Vatican only became involved in his sacking because it learned the order's officials were describing the move as something the pontiff desired.
Albrecht von Boeselager, who was reinstated as the order's grand chancellor Jan. 28, said Thursday that the Vatican was not trying to step on the Knights' historic status as a sovereign entity but to protect the pope's name.
"The Vatican started to take care of the crisis when it became aware of the fact that the wish of the Holy Father was invoked when I was asked to resign," von Boeselager said. "That's the reason that the Holy Father and the Vatican stepped in, so it had nothing to do with our sovereignty…

Knights of Malta say they’ll refocus on helping migrants, refugees - February 2, 2017
ROME- After weeks of turmoil that saw Pope Francis, the Vatican and the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta locked in a power struggle, a top official of the order now says they won’t let the crisis deter them from their humanitarian work, particularly with immigrants and refugees.
The Order of Malta “is not fighting the pope,” said Albrecht Boeselager, the Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Malta, who was fired last December but reinstated on Saturday after the resignation of Grand Master Matthew Festing. Boeselager contested impressions that Francis essentially sacked Festing.
“It’s not right to say that the Grand Master was ousted,” Boeselager said. “He was asked, I supposed, nobody of us was present, but in a pastoral way [by Pope Francis] to consider resignation. And Grand Master graciously offered his resignation to the sovereign council.”…
Though he refused to name Burke, Boeselager also said that throughout the crisis, which began when he was asked to resign, Festing had been, in his opinion, “ill-advised by whomever.”…

Knights of Malta 'still loyal to pope' after clash over condoms - 2 February 2017
The Knights of Malta has reaffirmed its allegiance to the pope while acknowledging damage was done by a clash with the Vatican that stemmed from an aid project distributing condoms in the developing world.
Matthew Festing was effectively fired as grand master of the Catholic order by Pope Francis as a result of the dispute. Festing had sacked another high-ranked official, Albrecht Freiherr von Boeselager, over the aid project.
Festing then challenged the right of the Vatican to hold an inquiry into the removal of Von Boeselager, who insisted he had shut down the programmes as soon as he could after finding out they were distributing condoms.
The pope responded by removing Festing, and Von Boeselager, the order’s grand chancellor, was reinstated. “The order reaffirms its loyalty to the Holy Father,” Von Boeselager told a news conference on Thursday.
“Let me reassure our members and everybody that the government of the order is and will remain at the service of the holy father. Our devotion to the teachings of the church is irrevocable and beyond question.”
Festing, backed by conservative Cardinal Raymond Burke, had stood up to the pope, saying the pontiff, who pushed for Von Boeselager’s reinstatement, could not intervene in the internal affairs of the Knights, a Rome-based institution that has sovereign status and is run like a small country.
Festing lost his battle with the Vatican, which said the condom issue was just an excuse by Festing and Burke to wield more power…
…The future role of Burke, the institution’s “patron” or chaplain, who has openly challenged the pope on a host of doctrinal issues, was not clear.
The pope is due to name his own delegate to help run the order until a new grand master can be elected in several months. Von Boeselager said the delegate would be the only interlocutor with the Vatican, effectively sidelining Burke.
Von Boeselager would not comment on Burke except to say that Festing had been “ill advised” in his attempt to take on the pope…

Fr. Charles Curran: Pope Francis' reforms are 'more than just style’- Apr. 15, 2016
BALTIMORE In a four-part speech hosted by New Ways Ministry, Fr. Charles Curran detailed the four ways in which Pope Francis is a reformer: style, priorities, church structure and moral teaching…
…While Curran argued for bold reforms under Francis, he was quick to temper expectations: "Some people will be disappointed because he won't change church teachings. Nonetheless, Francis has left the door ajar."
According to Curran, Francis' style was a shock from the start, referencing his chosen name, his place of residence, and his choosing to wash the feet of refugees, including Muslims. But, as Curran pointed out, Francis' reforms are "more than just style."
More significantly, Francis has reformed the church's priorities, starting with his first apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, which reminded the faithful about the joy of the good news. Perhaps more visible reforms, Curran said, have been the shift of focus from the culture-war social issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage and contraception, to a focus on the poor, like with his encyclical Laudato Si’…

Cardinal Burke and his accomplices - are fostering the societal prejudices against gay people, though completely void of any continuous dialogue between with science or religion subject of sexual orientation, which the research of science and scripture have already dispelled all the prejudges against homosexuality. However, like Hitler and the Nazi Regime they arbitrarily pick only the research science that fits with their own particular ideology. Their arbitrary actions to exclude authoritative science and religion - according to encyclicals of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI - leaves them without truth and without love.

FRANCIS REFUSES TO FALL INTO 'TRAP' SET BY CARDINAL BURKE AND ALLIES OVER 'ERRORS' IN AMORIS LAETITIA
16 November 2016
Pope believes questions posed on divorced and remarrieds are designed to force him into debate on cardinal's terms
One of Pope Francis’ most prominent critics has upped the ante. In an interview with the National Catholic Register United State’s Cardinal Raymond Burke has said the pontiff is “teaching error” by suggesting divorced and remarried Catholics can receive communion and has threatened to make a “formal act of correction.”
He and three other retired cardinals have written to Francis calling on him clear up the confusion which are contained in the Pope’s family synod document, Amoris Laetitia which they claim is causing “grave disorientation and great confusion” among Catholics. And they have put five questions to him - known as Dubia - which demand a “yes or no” answer.
But the Pope has not responded so the group - including Joachim Meisner, retired leader of Cologne, Carlo Caffarra, retired leader of Bologna, and Walter Brandmüller, formerly in charge of the Vatican’s historical sciences committee - have gone public with their concerns…

While Francis frustrates foes with silence, Fr. Antonio Spadaro nails them with tweets - December 27, 2016
…The attacks on Francis over Amoris Laetitia mounted along with conservative frustration, and in November four leading conservative cardinals — including the Rome-based U.S. churchman Cardinal Raymond Burke, a chief papal gadfly — finally released a letter demanding that Francis answer five yes-or-no questions, known in Latin as “dubia.” They said answering those questions would clarify whether Amoris Laetitia contravened church doctrine or not. By implication, the answers could also determine whether Francis was promoting heresy.
The publication of the letter came just days before Francis was to create a new batch of cardinals, ensuring that it would generate maximum publicity, and controversy.
The yes/no format of the “dubia” was also seen as a trap, and one that Francis apparently hopes to avoid. He has made it clear he sees the issue as a pastoral matter for Catholics and their priests to resolve and he is not going to try to give a one-size-fits-all response that conservatives could use to shortcut that process…

Archbishop Asks Rome To Ease Up - September 28, 1986
MILWAUKEE — Rembert George Weakland long has been regarded by his peers as the brightest member of the hierarchy in the American Roman Catholic Church...has politely but forthrightly told the Vatican to, in effect, soften its drive to coerce doctrinal uniformity by punishing dissenters.
He asserted that Draconian measures used throughout Christian history to silence those who challenge traditional church teaching have resulted in “much cruelty, suppression of theological creativity and lack of growth…”
Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton of Detroit predicted that the “cruel (and) demeaning” treatment of Archbishop Hunthausen would effectively “intimidate” his fellow prelates…
…in his columns, titled “The Price of Orthodoxy,” Archbishop Weakland appeared to be directing his remarks to Vatican inquisitors.
He contended that previous efforts to monitor and safeguard Catholic doctrine have been undertaken in an atmosphere where “amateurs-turned-theologians easily became headhunters and leaders were picked (on the basis of) the rigidity of their doctrine, so that often second-rate and repressive minds, riding on the waves of fear, took over.
“Religion under such circumstances then can become an ideology that tolerates no obstacle and that values ideas more than people…”

Conflicts within the Roman Catholic hierarchy poses risks to the organizational effectiveness of the Church, but the hierarchy’s approach to conflict handling has rarely been subjected to systematic, empirically grounded study...

Hunthausen also seeks a perspective shift when he asks his hearers to evaluate the “justice” of Church procedures according to the standards of civil law…

Fostering this type of societal ignorance about homosexuality is lethally dangerous especially if it is being fostered by someone in a position of authority, especially Church authority. Even though the prejudges against homosexuality have already been overwhelming dispelled by a plethora of authoritative scientific research and of scriptural exegesis by biblical scholars, still there is a propensity for some people to stay fiercely wedded to these false notions about homosexuality. However, none of these people can explain why they are so condemning of homosexuals - of people they attest knowing nothing about. Yet, many of those public figures, politicians, ministers and clerics alike, who have all protest vehemently against homosexuals - are found out - to be caught privately in gay sexual situations, the complete opposite of what they protest against publicly. In clinical terms this type personal sexual acting out behavior is generally known as dissociation.
Jack Drescher, MD, explains what homosexual dissociation behavior is like and where and when it starts in a person’s life. It begins in early childhood when a child who is gay grows up in a family social environment that is, as Drescher states, wedded to antihomosexual prejudices. It was the reason I came out to my parishioners 20 years ago this March 25, 1997.
The Closet: Psychological Issues of Being In and Coming Out
October 01, 2004 | Cultural Psychiatry, Dissociative Identity Disorder
By Jack Drescher, MD
In the jargon of contemporary homosexual culture, those who hide their sexual identities are referred to as either closeted or said to be in the closet. Revealing one's homosexuality is referred to as coming out. Clinical experience with gay patients reveals hiding and revealing behaviors to be psychologically complex.
Homosexual Identities
In the developmental histories of gay men and women, periods of difficulty in acknowledging their homosexuality, either to themselves or to others, are often reported. Children who grow up to be gay rarely receive family support in dealing with antihomosexual prejudices. On the contrary, beginning in childhood--and distinguishing them from racial and ethnic minorities--gay people are often subjected to the antihomosexual attitudes of their own families and communities (Drescher et al., 2004). Antihomosexual attitudes include homophobia (Weinberg, 1972), heterosexism (Herek, 1984), moral condemnations of homosexuality (Drescher, 1998) and antigay violence (Herek and Berrill, 1992). Hiding activities learned in childhood often persist into young adulthood, middle age and even senescence, leading many gay people to conceal important aspects of themselves…

J. Edgar Hoover: Gay or Just a Man Who Has Sex With Men? - November 16, 2011
…Dissociation -- denying homosexuality, but displaying sexual behavior -- is "not uncommon," according to Dr. Jack Drescher, a New York City psychiatrist who is an expert in gender and sexuality.
Men with strong attractions to other men can have different degrees of acceptance from being fully closeted to being openly gay. And even if they are homosexually self-aware, they can embrace it or reject it publicly.
"We confuse sexual orientation with sexual identity," said Drescher. "Some men do not publicly identify as gay, regardless of their sexual behavior."
Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracks a group that is not labeled "gay" but "men who have sex with men."
Roy Cohn, the lawyer who served as chief counsel to Sen. Joseph McCarthy in his anti-communist campaign of the 1950s and who successfully convicted Julius and Ethel Rosenberg of espionage, denied he was gay, despite an attraction to men.
Cohn, who died of AIDS in 1986, was a contemporary of Hoover and according to one biography, the two attended sex parties together in New York in the 1950s…

What is so lethally dangerous about this societal ignorance about homosexuality is that it is not only ignorance, but more often it is homosexual dissociation behavior. This means that this person will not even come close to the idea of homosexuality, let alone admitting to being ignorant about homosexuality. They are more often quite distraught emotionally by the mere mentioning of the word “homosexual.” We have witnessed this distraught homosexual dissociation behavior in two world events that happened - in less that 9 months apart from each other and the reactions from both - were surprising nearly identical. The first event was the release of the midterm report of Synod on Family 2014, October 14, 2014 and the second was US Supreme Court decision on gay marriage, June 26, 2015. In both events, it was extraordinary that in two different world populations - the response were the same. Those who object to gay marriage or to pastorally being supportive of gay people, including valuing gay relationships - their first response was emotionally negative and second response that followed was a refusal to discuss why they were against it, in the first place.
What is lethally dangerous about this societal ignorance regarding homosexuality - is that it is exploitable and has been exploited in the United States for political gain for the past 3 decades. Follow the history of the US elections and how the economy changed and how globalization became more real and how the US became less educated. Next, check to see how forcefully and publicly antigay prejudges, particularly gay marriage - were used in election campaigns.
As documented above Hitler and the Nazi Regime exploited social prejudices against homosexuals to lure the conservative elites support in March 1933 - the day before elections that ushered Hitler into the ultimate power as dictator. Hitler and the Nazis exploited same homosexual prejudices in their staged ‘immorality trials’ of the Catholic clergy - with the maximum of publicity. Their aim was not only to silence, remove and even kill - the Catholic priests who were out spoken against Nazism, but to destroy the reputation of the Catholic Church completely. Hundreds of these German priests were sent to Dachau Concentration Camp.
Priests of Dachau
In effort to counter the strength and influence of spiritual resistance, Nazi security services monitored Catholic clergy very closely—instructing that agents be set up in every diocese, that the bishops' reports to the Vatican should be obtained and that the bishops' areas of activity must be found out. A "vast network" was established to monitor the activities of ordinary clergy: Nazi security agents wrote "The importance of this enemy is such that inspectors of security police and of the security service will make this group of people and the questions discussed by them their special concern".[70] Priests were watched closely and frequently denounced, arrested and sent to concentration camps, often simply on the basis of being "suspected of activities hostile to the State" or that there was reason to "suppose that his dealings might harm society".[33]
Many clergy were imprisoned at Dachau Concentration Camp.[71][72] The first theologian arrived at Dachau in 1935, but from 1940, Dachau became the concentration point for clerical prisoners of the Nazi regime.[73] Of a total of 2,720 clergy recorded as imprisoned at Dachau, the overwhelming majority, some 2,579 (or 94.88%) were Catholic. Among the other denominations, there were 109 Evangelicals, 22 Greek Orthodox, 8 Old Catholics and Mariavites and 2 Muslims. In his Dachau: The Official History 1933–1945, Paul Berben noted that R. Schnabel's 1966 investigation, Die Frommen in der Holle found an alternative total of 2,771 and included the fate all the clergy listed, with 692 noted as deceased and 336 sent out on "invalid trainloads" and therefore presumed dead.[74] Kershaw noted that some 400 German priests were sent to Dachau.[75] Total numbers are difficult to assert, for some clergy were not recognised as such by the camp authorities, and some – particularly Poles – did not wish to be identified as such, fearing they would be mistreated.[76]…

Read Ian Kershaw - it is clear that homosexual prejudices was not the sole cause of Hitler becoming dictator - the contributing factors to this event are huge and complex - but the exploitation of homosexual prejudges did played a part that we know today through research - need not have happened then. But without question they need not be used today.
However, the homosexual dissociative ignorance on the part of the majority of the members of the Roman curia and the hierarchy that has been so clearly demonstrated by Cardinal Burke and the Congregation for the Clergy, December 8, 2016 statement about gay people - together they set the stage - by their incessant reiteration of past societal homosexual prejudices that have all - through ongoing dialogue between the scientific research and biblical exegesis - been found to be false. However, their willful ignorance about the science and religion about homosexual sexual orientation - sets the stage to be exploited by highly unscrupulous people, who are on the same moral level as Hitler and the Nazi Regime. What are you people doing at the top of the Catholic Church? I truly believed for most of my life that some of the best and the brightest people were in these top positions - not the dumbest (empty-headed) and dullest (insipid - lacking vigor and interest)!!! GET OUT and save the world!!!
You just don’t get it - your ignorance - your collective repressed homosexual dissociation - is being exploited to commit violence - global violence - for selfish gain - the atrocities they have and still are causing - are far worst than that of Hitler and the Nazis i.e. global warming.
How do you think those people, who deny that global warming exists - got in elected office in the first place and have helped over the years to create these globalization tycoons?
You just don’t get it!!!
Pope Francis gets it - perfectly and with humility! Why does he get it and the greater majority of the curia and the hierarchy do not?
You know - there may have been a very serious reason why Saint Pope John Paul II began his Encyclical Letter of 1998 - FIDES ET RATIO, with the INTRODUCTION - “KNOW YOURSELF.”
Update: January 29, 2017
And there has been absolutely no consideration given to the words of Pope Benedict XVI’s emphatic warning in his encyclical “CARITAS IN VERITATE" 2007 2009 about never ceasing to maintained an ongoing dialogue between reason (science) and religion. He states that - “Any breach in this dialogue comes only at an enormous price to human development.” Benedict is making this statement from his personal experience - having lived through the first 18 years of his life being subjected to the severity of the dehumanizing consequences of the "cumulative radicalization” of Nazism - it is collectively Hitler’s and the Nazi Regime’s ever increasing capacity for destruction. Historian Ian Kershaw has identified this form of "cumulative radicalization” as the leading characteristic of Nazi Germany. It is highly questionable as to - why these men of "The Congregation for the Clergy" made this completely unsubstantiated statement on December 8, 2016? Their ill-informed statement is void of any dialogue for the past 60 years between the authoritative research science and the expertise biblical scholars on the topic of homosexuality. Was it out of plain stupidity? Or was it done for France??? There is another form of global dehumanizing "cumulative radicalization” presently escalating. Who is being exploited - at the expense millions of peoples' lives and who is profiting from these atrocities??? I am risking my life for the protection of children - all children - globally 1997-2017. What are you all doing???
Hitler and the Uniqueness of Nazism
Ian Kershaw
Journal of Contemporary History 2004
Excerpt:
…Radicalization, in other words, was temporary and fluctuating, rather than an intrinsic feature of the system itself. So the ‘cumulative radicalization’ so central to nazism is left needing an explanation.
Linked to this is the capacity for destruction — again extraordinary even for dictatorships. This destructive capacity, though present from the outset, developed over time and in phases; against internal political, then increasingly, ‘racial’ enemies in spring 1933, across the spring and summer of 1935, and during the summer and autumn of 1938; following this, the qualitative leap in its extension to the Poles from autumn 1939 onwards; and the unleashing of its full might in the wake of the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The unceasing radicalization of the regime, and the different stages in the unfolding of its destructive capacity cannot, however, as has come to be generally recognized, be explained by Hitler’s commands and actions alone. Rather, they followed countless initiatives from below, at many different levels of the regime. Invariably, these occurred within a broad ideological framework associated with Hitler’s wishes and intentions. But those initiating the actions were seldom — except in the realms of foreign policy and war strategy — following direct orders from Hitler and were by no means always ideologically motivated. A whole panoply of motives was involved. What motivated the individual — ideological conviction, career advancement, power-lust, sadism and other factors — is, in fact, of secondary importance. Of primary significance is that, whatever the motivation, the actions had the function of working towards the accomplishment of the visionary goals of the regime, embodied in the person of the Führer…

…Fillon is the dark horse who is suddenly favourite to win the right’s nomination for presidential candidate on Sunday, and thus likely to face the far-right Front National’s Marine Le Pen in the race to lead France next year.
An amateur racing driver and unrepentant Margaret Thatcher fan who has broken ranks with the traditionally statist line of the French right, he has promised a “radical shock” for France – tax cuts, public spending cuts, slashing public sector jobs and breaking trade union power.
His popularity is also down to his careful appeal to the deeply socially conservative views of the Catholic right, promising to reverse certain recently won adoption rights for gay couples, preserve traditional family values and respect France’s Christian roots.
“France is more rightwing than it has ever been,” Fillon said this week, positioning himself as the only candidate who could fully tap into that mood.
If Fillon’s promises of radical economic reform and “freedom from French bureaucracy” sound familiar, it is because they are. His shock-therapy plans are an echo of what the rightwing Nicolas Sarkozy promised when he swept to power in 2007, but failed to deliver…

Conservative Cardinal Who Clashed With Pope Francis Confirms He Has Been Ousted - Oct 17, 2014
...Burke has publicly clashed with the pope since Francis took office in 2013, and he has come to represent the sidelining of culture warriors elevated by Joseph Ratzinger as Pope Benedict and as the top doctrinal official under Pope John Paul II. Burke, who caused controversy while bishop of St. Louis by saying Catholics who voted for politicians supportive of abortion rights should not receive communion, went on Catholic television in 2013 to rebut remarks Pope Francis made to an interviewer that the church had become “obsessed” with abortion and sexuality to the exclusion of other issues, saying, “We can never talk enough about that as long as in our society innocent and defenseless human life is being attacked in the most savage way,” Burke said. While Francis famously responded to a question about homosexuality in 2013 by asking, “Who am I to judge?” Burke described homosexual “acts” as “always and everywhere wrong [and] evil” during an interview last week...

The Crisis That Changed Pope Francis
October 23, 2014 - Newsweek
…Change on the march
…He got what he wanted. There was free and fierce debate between liberals and ideological conservatives (the most strident of whom, US Cardinal Raymond Burke, has been going round claiming that the pope is about to sack him from his post as the Holy See’s most senior canon law judge). Pastoral conservatives have divided between the two sides. Yet the vote on welcoming gays failed by just two votes to get the two-third majority.
Change is clearly on the march. A series of documents were drawn up – an interim report, small group reports and a final report which was less welcoming to gays and the divorced than Francis wanted. These are now the subject of a year’s intense debate. Then there will be a larger Synod on the family next October after which the pope – who concluded by warning against “hostile rigidity” by traditionalists and “destructive good will” by liberals – has the final word…

The biggest unreported synod influence: human experience
Oct. 30, 2014
...Besides offering his fellow cardinals a model of how to get transferred to Malta, Cardinal Burke, who loves to drape himself in the trailing yards of crimson silk of the old church's cappa magna, claims to be fighting for the integrity of church teaching in a world that irritates him by now being more sympathetic to homosexuals than to the vanished glory of the cappa magna.
Burke provides a sad example of a churchman who doesn't get or simply overrides the theological wisdom of human experience. By insisting that homosexuality is "intrinsically disordered," he aligns himself with other church leaders who have no clinical or theological basis for making such a judgment. Indeed, he employs a philosophical category that does not fit the human dignity of homosexual men and women.
...We can be thankful to Cardinal Burke for providing us with the contrast needed to see the understanding of human personality that may be the hallmark of Francis' papacy as well as of the synod on the family. The crimson-wrapped Burke is headed for exile on an island, the fate of a faux Napoleon who, thanks to the Peter Principle, has reached the level that matches his ignorance about and fear of homosexuals. He vindicates the sensible judgments tested by human experience while revealing how out of sync he is with the church he claims to defend...

Cardinals Attack 'People's Pope' With Familiar Wingnut Tactics 11/04/14

Conservative dissent is brewing inside the Vatican - September 7, 2015
VATICAN CITY — On a sunny morning earlier this year, a camera crew entered a well-appointed apartment just outside the 9th-century gates of Vatican City. Pristinely dressed in the black robes and scarlet sash of the princes of the Roman Catholic Church, Wisconsin-born Cardinal Raymond Burke sat in his elaborately upholstered armchair and appeared to issue a warning to Pope Francis.
A staunch conservative and Vatican bureaucrat, Burke had been demoted by the pope a few months earlier, but it did not take the fight out of him. Francis had been backing a more inclusive era, giving space to progressive voices on divorced Catholics as well as gays and lesbians. In front of the camera, Burke said he would “resist” liberal changes — and seemed to caution Francis about the limits of his authority. “One must be very attentive regarding the power of the pope,” Burke told the French news crew…
[Burke states] “We have a serious issue right now, a very alarming situation where Catholic priests and bishops are saying and doing things that are against what the church teaches, talking about same-sex unions, about Communion for those who are living in adultery,” the official said. “And yet the pope does nothing to silence them. So the inference is that this is what the pope wants.”…

Cardinal Burke warns of ‘betrayal of truth,’ even by bishops - May 18, 2016
“The follower of the truth written by God on every human heart will suffer persecution at the hands of those who prefer the immediate convenience and pleasure of lies, even the grossest of lies,” Burke said.
“The suffering is greatly increased by the betrayal of the truth by those who claim to follow Christ and to be members of his Church, even bishops, priests and consecrated religious,” the cardinal added.
Among other things, Burke appeared to suggest that Catholic institutions in secularized cultures need to be prepared to sacrifice public support in order to remain true to the Church’s teachings.
“I think, for instance, of the threat of the loss of tax exemption, with its disastrous effects on many apostolates of the Church, which may be the necessary result of holding true to our faith and the moral law,” he said.
In general, Burke said Catholics struggling to uphold traditional positions should be prepared for scorn, including from fellow Catholics.
“Such martyrdom is the daily witness offered by every faithful Catholic in a totally secularized society, and in the Church which too suffers secularization,” he said.
“We embrace indifference, ridicule, rejection, and other forms of persecution because we love Our Lord and all our brothers and sisters in Him, in his holy Church,” Burke said.

Opposition to Pope Francis Comes Out of the Closet - December 4, 2015
…First up is Cardinal Raymond Burke’s recent op-ed in the National Catholic Register. The flamboyant cardinal uses the old trick of attacking someone close to the pope, rather than the pope directly, in this instance, Father Antonio Spadaro, S.J. Fr. Spadaro had written that the synod opened a door toward the divorced and remarried. +Burke replies: “The fact is that the synod could not open a door which does not exist and cannot exist, namely, a discernment in conscience which contradicts the truth about the supreme sanctity of the Most Holy Eucharist and the indissolubility of the marriage bond.” Who said anything about “contradicting” the truth? The contradiction – and it is only an apparent one to us poor humans who have more theological work to do – is between “the truth” about marriage and the Eucharist and “the truth” about God’s mercy and, relatedly, “the truth” about the practice of our sister Churches of the East. But, Cardinal Burke expects everyone to use his lens, his weighting of the issues, his sense of what is, and is not, possible. Someone needs to tell him that he was not elected pope in 2013…

The four — Walter Brandmüller, 88, Carlo Caffarra, 78, Joachim Meisner, 83 — seem to be following the scarlet flag of American Raymond Burke, 68, ex-head of the Apostolic Signatura lately attacking again, this time over at the Knights of Malta.
Burke's now showing his true colors: everything is black and white. His concurrent attacks on the pope reduce to two statements: "I'm smarter than you," and "I deny your authority.”…

The Pope faces his adversaries
January 26, 2017
Brief excerpts:
By obtaining the resignation on Wednesday of the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Pope Francis has made an important point to those who call into question the deep reforms he is undertaking in the Vatican and the Church. Not that Brother Matthew Festing is a personal enemy of the pope, but the conflict between Francis and the Knights of Malta represents the sum of all the opposition he is encountering in his will to reform.
The chronology of events is perplexing. In early December, the Grand Master of the Order demanded the resignation of Grand Chancellor Albrecht von Boeselager, who is accused of being "a liberal Catholic, unfaithful to the teachings of the Church."
Present at this discussion, was Cardinal Raymond Burke, the pope's representative to the Order and one of his main opponents, who led a public attack against the exhortation Amoris laetitia…to force him to return to the text - something that no pope had done for at least two centuries - and to lessen the magisterial scope of the Vatican.
Within the Order of Malta, the attacks against von Boeselager, who was accused of having allowed the distribution of condoms by the Order in Burma in 2005, was a moral issue. The German explained to the grand master that the matter had been settled and refused to resign. Supported, at least in silence, by Cardinal Burke, Matthew Festing insisted that it was "the will of the Holy See.”…
Ten days later, von Boeselager's own brother, Georg, was appointed to the superintendency of…the "Vatican bank". With two other bankers, he replaced officials of the IOR ["Vatican bank”] who, defending the idea of creating a Vatican investment fund in Luxembourg opposed by the Pope, had to resign in May. Seen against this backdrop, the attacks against von Boeselager appear more and more as a challenge to the reform of the Vatican’s finances and those who are implementing them.
Already, under Benedict XVI, it was on the issue of its finances that the Vatican was most violently attacked. The VatiLeaks affair, the leaking of documents from the Pope's office, began shortly after the German pope had begun a vast clean-up of the Vatican's finances, including the IOR where scandals were multiplying…
Still, more than the mafia-type dealings, it is the financial system itself that has obstructed the popes’ efforts…

The Knights of Malta-Vatican feud: a tale of chivalry and sovereignty
By Philip Pullella
Jan 28, 2017 - Reuters
Brief excerpts:
On the afternoon of Jan. 24, a black BMW pulled out of a 16th century palace in Rome, crossed the Tiber River and headed for the Vatican, a short trip to end a brazen challenge to the authority of Pope Francis.
Inside the car was 67-year-old Englishman Matthew Festing, the head of an ancient Catholic order of knights which is now a worldwide charity with a unique diplomatic status…
…Instead of quelling the conflict, however, Festing's resignation was followed by yet another challenge to Francis' authority -- led by vocal pope critic American Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, according to Vatican and Knights sources.
In particular: Burke tried to convince Festing to withdraw his resignation and keep fighting the pope, these sources say. On Saturday, the Knight's Sovereign Council accepted Festing's resignation and re-instated von Boselager, a clear defeat for Burke…
…A German aristocrat whose father participated in a failed plot to kill Hitler in World War Two, von Boeselager was fired by Festing in December, and accused of having allowed the use of condoms while he was head of the Knights' global humanitarian projects.
Festing fired him in Burke's presence, arguing that the German had hidden the condom use from the order's leaders when he was named Grand Chancellor, according to Knights and Vatican sources…
…In the same statement, von Boeselager said Festing and Burke told him the Vatican wanted him to resign and that there would be "severe consequences" for the Order if he did not.
The Vatican denied, in a letter from its secretary of state to the Order and seen by Reuters, that it had mandated the resignation, saying it had told the Knights the pope wanted a solution through dialogue.
The German said his sacking was against the Knights' constitution and appealed to the pope, who ordered the investigation…
…The day after Festing handed his resignation to the pope, Cardinal Burke drove to the order's headquarters from his apartment near the Vatican and sought to persuade Festing to withdraw his resignation, a source from the Vatican and one from the Knights said.
Burke declined to comment on his meeting with Festing.
Burke has long been leading challenges against the pope. Pope Francis demoted him from a top Vatican job in 2014 with no official explanation and assigned him to be the "patron" of the Order of Malta…
…The pope will now appoint a "pontifical delegate" to help run the order, at least until elections can be held for a new Grand Master.
In a personal letter to the Sovereign Council on Jan. 27 and seen by Reuters, Francis made clear that the Vatican did not want to interfere with the Order's sovereignty but said his delegate would seek to "renew the spirituality of the Order, specifically of those members who take vows."

Pope’s takeover of Knights of Malta brings chance for needed reform

By Austen Ivereigh - January 29, 2017
Brief excerpts:
…It accepted Festing’s resignation by a clear majority, agreed to appoint Rumerstein, and reinstated the former Grand Chancellor, Albrecht Freiherr von Boeselager. It was the sacking of Boeselager by Festing and the order’s chaplain, American Cardinal Raymond Burke, that sparked the
Vatican intervention…
No mention was made of Burke, who was absent from Saturday’s meeting. The leader of an anti-Francis crusade from the start of the papacy…
He is also the prime mover behind a letter made public last November in which four cardinals challenged the pope over the orthodoxy of his apostolic exhortation on the family, Amoris Laetitia.
It was Burke’s attempt to use Pope Francis’s authority as part of an internal power-play by Festing in December to remove his rival Boeselager that prompted the papal putsch…
The president of the order’s German Association, Erich Lobkowicz, has described the struggle as “a battle between all that Pope Francis stands for and a tiny clique of ultraconservative frilly old diehards in the Church - diehards that have missed the train in every conceivable respect.”
Festing’s clique is known for its love of Old-Rite liturgies and suspicion of Pope Francis…
The reformers have been especially incensed by Festing’s indulgence of the knights’ Italian branch, which has close connections to the wealthy and powerful order in Argentina. Both have long been linked to power plays in Italian politics and high finance, as well as to conservative networks in the Vatican.
“Part of it is a wonderful humanitarian organization, but part of it is a mafia, pure and simple,” one observer close to the pope told Crux…

Pope Mass: ‘Christians need to overcome a self-centered mindset’ - 20/01/2017
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has called on Christians to overcome the self-centered mindset of the doctors of the law who know only how to condemn. His words came at the morning Mass in the Casa Santa Marta…
Overcoming the egotistical mentality of the doctors of the law who know only how to condemn
…“The new covenant changes our heart and allows us to see the law of the Lord with this new heart, with this new mindset. Consider the doctors of the law who persecuted Jesus. These men did everything prescribed by the law. But their mindset was distanced from God. Theirs was an egotistical mindset, focused on themselves: their hearts constantly condemned [others]. The new covenant changes our hearts and minds. There is a change in mindset.”..,

On Friday, just when Donald Trump was being sworn in to office in Washington, Pope Francis was giving a long interview to EL PAÍS at the Vatican, during which he was calling for prudence in the face of the alarm bells that were ringing due to the new US president.
During an hour and 15 minutes, in a simple room in the Casa de Santa Marta, where he lives, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who was born in Buenos Aires 80 years ago and is on his way to completing his fourth year as Pontiff, explained that “in the Church there are saints and sinners, decent men and corrupt men,” but that what most worries him is “a Church that has been anesthetized by mundanity,” one that is far from the problems of the people…

Both in Europe and in America, the repercussions of the crisis that never ends, the growing inequalities, the absence of strong leadership are giving way to political groups that reflect on the citizens' malaise. Some of them — the so-called anti-system or populists— capitalize on the fears in face of an uncertain future in order to form a message full of xenophobia and hatred towards the foreigner. Trump's case is the most noteworthy, but there are others such as Austria or Switzerland. Are you worried about this phenomenon?
A. That is what they call populism. Which is an equivocal term, because, in Latin America, populism has another meaning. In Latin America, it means that the people —for instance, people's movements— are the protagonists. They are self-organized, it is something else. When I started to hear about populism in Europe I didn't know what to make of it, I got lost, until I realized that it had different meanings. Crises provoke fear, alarm. In my opinion, the most obvious example of European populism is Germany in 1933. After [Paul von] Hindenburg, after the crisis of 1930, Germany is broken, it needs to get up, to find its identity, a leader, someone capable of restoring its character, and there is a young man named Adolf Hitler who says: "I can, I can". And all Germans vote for Hitler. Hitler didn't steal the power, his people voted for him, and then he destroyed his people. That is the risk. In times of crisis, we lack judgment, and that is a constant reference for me. Let's look for a savior who gives us back our identity and lets defend ourselves with walls, barbed- wire, whatever, from other peoples that may rob us of our identity. And that is a very serious thing. That is why I always try to say: talk among yourselves, talk to one another. But the case of Germany in 1933 is typical, a people that was immersed in a crisis, that looked for its identity until this charismatic leader came and promised to give their identity back, and he gave them a distorted identity, and we all know what happened. Where there is no conversation... Can borders be controlled? Yes, each country has the right to control its borders, who comes and who goes, and those countries at risk — from terrorism or such things— have even more the right to control them more, but no country has the right to deprive its citizens of the possibility to talk with their neighbors…
Q. …In Spain there us a very lively debate on laicism and religiousness, as you know...
A. Very lively...
Q. What do you think about it? Is it possible that the laicism process, in the end, will force the Catholic Church out to the margins?
A. Talk. That is the advice I give to every country. Talk, please. A fraternal conversation, if you feel up to it, or at least in a civilized way. Don't throw insults at each other. Don't condemn before talking. If, after the conversation, you still want to insult the other, alright, but first talk. If, after the conversation, you still want to condemn the other, alright, but first talk.
Today, with the level of human development, politics without talking is unconceivable. And that applies to Spain and to elsewhere. So, if you ask me for advice for the Spanish people, I say: talk. If there are problems, first, talk…
Q. In your consistories you have created cardinals from all over the world. How would you like the next conclave to be, the one that will elect your successor? Your Holiness, do you think that you will witness the next conclave?
A. I want it to be Catholic. A Catholic conclave that chooses my successor.
Q. And will you see it?
A. I don't know. That is for God to decide. When I feel that I cannot go on, my great teacher Benedict taught me how to do it. And, if God carries me away before that, I will see it from the afterlife. I hope it will not be from Hell... But I want it to be a Catholic consistory.
Q. I see you very happy to be a Pope.
A. The Lord is good and hasn't taken away my good humor.

Pope Francis: ‘Remember Holocaust so never repeated’ - 27/01/2017
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis met with a delegation from the European Jewish Congress Friday on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which occurs annually on 27 January.
The Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, Fr. Norbert Hofmann, was present at the meeting.
In an interview with Vatican Radio (in Italian), he said the Pope “began the dialogue by mentioning the importance of this Day for the Jews, but also for us, because remembering the victims of the Holocaust is important so that this human tragedy never happens again”…

"FINAL SOLUTION": OVERVIEW
UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM
The Nazis frequently used euphemistic language to disguise the true nature of their crimes. They used the term “Final Solution” to refer to their plan to annihilate the Jewish people. It is not known when the leaders of Nazi Germany definitively decided to implement the "Final Solution." The genocide, or mass destruction, of the Jews was the culmination of a decade of increasingly severe discriminatory measures.
Under the rule of Adolf Hitler, the persecution and segregation of Jews was implemented in stages. After the Nazi party achieved power in Germany in 1933, its state-sponsored racism led to anti-Jewish legislation, economic boycotts, and the violence of the Kristallnacht ("Night of Broken Glass") pogroms, all of which aimed to systematically isolate Jews from society and drive them out of the country…

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE "FINAL SOLUTION"

Before the general deportation of Jews out of the so-called Greater German Reich began in October 1941, the burgeoning prisoner population of many concentration camps on German soil inspired some of the initial prisoner selections. SS doctors and so-called euthanasia functionaries conducted these selections. Beginning in spring of 1941, German officials sent ill and exhausted prisoners from Dachau, Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, Mauthausen, Flossenbürg, Gross-Rosen, Niederhagen, Neuengamme, Ravensbrück, and Auschwitz to their deaths at various euthanasia killing centers under the auspices of Operation 14f13, the extension of the so-called euthanasia program to the concentration camp system.
During World War II, Nazi doctors also performed medical experiments on prisoners in some camps. Experiments to test pharmaceuticals and medical treatments, formulate rescue and survival strategies for Axis troops in the field, devise efficient and economic methods of mass sterilization, and underpin Nazi racial and antisemitic theories claimed the health and lives of thousands of concentration camp prisoners.
One of the most significant events to alter the makeup of the concentration camp system was the decision to deport and systematically murder the European Jews. To facilitate this "Final Solution" (the physical annihilation of the Jews), SS and police officials established four killing centers in German-occupied Poland exclusively for this purpose: Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka. The SS and police staff at each of these camps used carbon monoxide gas to murder Jews in large numbers. The SS establishment also constructed one killing center in the concentration camp system. Auschwitz II, better known as Auschwitz-Birkenau, began killing operations in spring 1942. In Auschwitz-Birkenau, the SS had within the concentration camp system a killing center that had four gas chambers and that, at the height of the deportations, could kill up to 6,000 Jews each day…

Walking With Peter - January 23, 2017
A confident pope sets a new example for governing the church.
…Since the first days of his pontificate in 2013, Pope Francis has dealt with more than his fair share of tension in the church he was elected to govern. Those tensions have become more pronounced in recent months, as Francis tries to extend the center of global Catholicism away from Rome to the peripheries and implement reforms that his supporters say are long overdue.
Whereas popes of the distant past wielded temporal power as effectively as any king, Pope Francis’ most potent tool is his example. The men he has appointed to be cardinals and bishops serve as models of the kinds of pastors he thinks the church needs. His many interviews and press conferences demonstrate his insistence that church leaders must connect with everyday Catholics. And his decision to bring out into the open once taboo topics shows that he wants the church to confront its challenges rather than continue to ignore them out of a mistaken, simplistic notion of unity.
The pope has invited his flock to walk alongside him as he seeks to reinvigorate the church. Taking the initial steps of what promises to be a long trek means tensions in the church are sure not to let up anytime soon. But Francis is unafraid, those close to him say, trusting that God is guiding him and all the faithful on this journey…

Pope Francis greets Arnold Schwarzenegger at General Audience - 25/01/2017
(Vatican Radio) Among those greeting Pope Francis at the General Audience on Wednesday was Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former governor of the US state of California.
Schwarzenegger has been promoting the “R20 - Regions of Climate Action”, an NGO he founded in 2010 which seeks to help sub-national governments around the world to develop and communicate low-carbon and climate resilient economic development projects.
The Austrian-born politician first gained fame as a bodybuilder and actor, before becoming governor of California from 2003-2011. While in office, California issued more stringent emission standards for vehicles than existed in the rest of the United States, and has championed the role of sub-national governments in the fight for the environment…

What If We Said, 'Wait'?: The case for a grass-roots review of the new Roman Missal - December 14, 2009
It is now 45 years since the Second Vatican Council promulgated the groundbreaking and liberating document on the sacred liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium. As an eager and enthusiastic North American College seminarian at the time, I was in St. Peter’s Square on the December day in 1963 when Pope Paul VI, with the world’s bishops, presented that great Magna Carta to the church. The conciliar document transcended ecclesiastical politics. It was not just the pet project of a party but the overwhelming consensus of the bishops of the world. Its adoption passed overwhelmingly: 2,147 to 4.
Not in my wildest dreams would it have occurred to me then that I would live to witness what seems more and more like the systematic dismantling of the great vision of the council’s decree. But I have. We Catholics have.
For evidence, one need look no further than recent instructions from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments that have raised rubricism to an art form, or the endorsement, even encouragement, of the so-called Tridentine Mass. It has become painfully clear that the liturgy, the prayer of the people, is being used as a tool—some would even say as a weapon—to advance specific agendas. And now on the horizon are the new translations of the Roman Missal that will soon reach the final stages of approval by the Holy See. Before long the priests of this country will be told to take the new translations to their people by means of a carefully orchestrated education program that will attempt to put a good face on something that clearly does not deserve it…

Why Pope Francis is right to revisit the new Mass translation - January 27, 2017
…Pope Francis points to the importance of simplicity, clarity, directness and adapting to “the language of the people in order to reach them with God’s word…and to share in their lives” (No. 158). In light of this, how can we justify using words like “consubstantial,” “conciliation,” “oblation”or “regeneration”?
Pope Francis also goes after the sacred cow of ancient Latin texts. He writes: “We cannot demand that peoples of every continent, in expressing their Christian faith, imitate modes of expression which European nations developed at a particular moment of their history, because the faith cannot be constricted to the limits of understanding and expression of any one culture” (“Evangelii Gaudium,” No. 115).
The principles of “Liturgiam Authenticam” run precisely counter to Pope Francis’ vision. Far from drawing on the gifts of culture, it stifles them in favor of a monoculture. Contrast the words of Francis with the directive “Liturgiam” gives to the church in the developing world: “fidelity and exactness with respect to the original texts may themselves sometimes require that words already in current usage be employed in new ways, that new words or expressions be coined, that terms in the original text be transliterated” (No. 21). This is precisely the kind of cultural imperialism that Pope Francis has called into question…

"Who am I to judge?”
...the entirely mind-blowing fact of
a supposedly infallible pope asking this question at all...
Pope Francis: The Times They Are A-Changin’ - January 28, 2014
Inside the Pope's gentle revolution
By Mark Binelli
Brief excerpt:
…While much of this sounds like wishful thinking, they also have a point: The pope's tonal changes don't necessarily signal a wild swing from tradition. Francis has ruled out the ordination of women, for example, and he still considers abortion an evil. But those obsessed with contextualizing Francis would do well to take a look at the impromptu press conference he granted last summer to gathered Vaticanisti (members of the Vatican press corps) during the flight back from a trip to Rio. Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, told me he'd expected the press conference would go about 20 minutes. It lasted for nearly 90, and ended up including the pope's famous "Who am I to judge?" response, which is normally the only part of the exchange that's quoted. But reading the full transcript or, better yet, watching longer excerpts on YouTube helps to convey the true context.
A reporter asks Francis, who is standing at the head of the aisle, about the existence of a "gay lobby" within the Vatican. Francis begins by making a joke, saying he hasn't yet run into anyone with a special gay identification card. But then his face becomes serious and, gesturing for emphasis, he says it's important to distinguish between lobbies, which are bad – "A lobby of the greedy, a lobby of politicians, a lobby of Masons, so many lobbies!" he says later in the press conference – and individual gay people who are well- intentioned and seeking God. It's while speaking to the latter point that he makes the "Who am I to judge?" remark, and this part of the video is really
worth watching, because, aside from the entirely mind-blowing fact of a supposedly infallible pope asking this question at all, his answer is never really translated properly. What he actually says is, "Mah, who am I to judge?" In Italian, mah is an interjection with no exact English parallel, sort of the verbal equivalent of an emphatic shrug. My dad's use of mah most often precedes his resignedly pouring another splash of grappa into his coffee. The closest translation I can come up with is "Look, who the hell knows?" If you watch the video, Francis even pinches his fingers together for extra Italian emphasis. Then he flashes a knowing smirk…

The road to Auschwitz was built by hate,
but paved with indifference.
Ian Kershaw
Popular Opinion and Political Dissent in the
Third Reich, Bavaria 1933-1945
Hitler and the Uniqueness of Nazism
Ian KershawJournal of Contemporary History 2004
…Not only the street-fighters and beer-hall brawlers in the nazi movement were attracted by the idea of violently-attained national salvation. As much recent research has shown, a new generation of intelligent, middle-class students at German universities in the early 1920s soaked up völkisch ideas, those of extreme racist nationalism, intrinsic to the ideas of national regeneration. In this way, ‘national salvation’ found intellectualized form among groups which would constitute a coming élite, groups whose doctorates in law combined with a rationalized ‘Neue Sachlichkeit’ (or ‘new objectivity’) type of approach to the ‘cleansing’ of the nation: the excision of its ‘life-threatening diseases’…
That ‘national salvation’ involved not just internal regeneration, but a ‘new order’ based on the ethnic cleansing of the entire continent of Europe, also singles out National Socialism from all other forms of fascism. No small part of its uniqueness, in other words, was the combination of racial nationalism and imperialism directed not abroad, but at Europe itself…
It is not just the force in themselves of the ideas of national rebirth that Hitler came to embody, but the fact that they arose in such a highly modern state system, which was decisive for their uniquely destructive quality…
Let us return at this point to Hitler and to the implementation of the politics of national salvation after 1933. I have been suggesting that a modern state system directed by ‘charismatic authority’, based on ideas, frequently used by Hitler, of a ‘mission’ (Sendung) to bring about salvation’ (Rettung) or ‘redemption’ (Erlösung) — all, of course, terms tapping religious or quasi-religious emotions — was unique…
New élites, as has already been suggested, were only too ready to exploit the unheard of opportunities offered to them in the Führer state to build up unimaginable power accretions, free of any legal or administrative shackles. The new ‘technocrats of power’, of the type exemplified by Reinhard Heydrich, combined ideological fanaticism with cold, ruthless, depersonified efficiency and organizational skills. They could find rationality in irrationality; could turn into practical reality the goals associated with Hitler, needing no further legitimitation than recourse to the ‘wish of the Führer’. This was no ‘banality of evil’. This was the working of an ideologically-motivated élite coldly prepared to plan for the eradication of 11 million Jews (the figure laid down at the Wannsee Conference of January 1942), and for the ‘resettlement’ to the Siberian wastes, plainly genocidal in intent, of over 30 million, mainly Slavs, over the following 25 years. That, in such a system, they would find countless ‘willing executioners’ prepared to do their bit, whatever the individual motivation of those involved, goes without saying…it was that the idea of racial cleansing, the core of the notion of national salvation, had become, via Hitler’s leadership position, institutionalized in all aspects of organized life in the nazi state. That was decisive…

A life in writing: Ian Kershaw - 17 August 2011
..How did he make the switch to the Nazis? "It wasn't a road to Damascus," he says, "but it was relatively sudden. I started learning German with a view to studying the history of peasant revolts in later medieval Europe, but as my German improved I became very interested in what was happening in Germany – it was just after the 1968 student revolutions, there was a lot happening and the Nazi period wasn't that far away – and how it was coping with the legacy of the war.
He spent the summer of 1972 on a Goethe Institute scholarship in Munich, and had a chilling encounter with an ex-Nazi that hardened his growing belief that he should abandon his plan to study medieval peasants and concentrate on his own time. "I met this fellow, and he asked me what I was doing there. He said: 'You English, you were so stupid, you should have been in the war with us. We'd have defeated the Bolsheviks and divided the world up between us.' And he said at one point: 'The Jew is a louse.' I was completely shocked by this, and it made me wonder what went on in this little place at that time. That was the trigger, but I was already on the way.”..

Overcome indifference and win peace: 2016 Peace Day Message - Pope Francis - Dec 15, 2015
...Kinds of indifference
3. Clearly, indifference is not something new; every period of history has known people who close their hearts to the needs of others, who close their eyes to what is happening around them, who turn aside to avoid encountering other people's problems. But in our day, indifference has ceased to be a purely personal matter and has taken on broader dimensions, producing a certain “globalization of indifference”.
The first kind of indifference in human society is indifference to God, which then leads to indifference to one’s neighbour and to the environment. This is one of the grave consequences of a false humanism and practical materialism allied to relativism and nihilism. We have come to to think that we are the source and creator of ourselves, our lives and society. We feel self-sufficient, prepared not only to find a substitute for God but to do completely without him. As a consequence, we feel that we owe nothing to anyone but ourselves, and we claim only rights…
In other cases, indifference shows itself in lack of concern for what is happening around us, especially if it does not touch us directly. Some people prefer not to ask questions or seek answers; they lead lives of comfort, deaf to the cry of those who suffer. Almost imperceptibly, we grow incapable of feeling compassion for others and for their problems; we have no interest in caring for them, as if their troubles were their own responsibility, and none of our business.[9] “When we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure... Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off.”[10] …

God Forbid - We Are Proactive Protecting Children
God forbid that we should do something that is courageously proactive in way of the protection and well-being of children!!! God forbid that for once we should error in the way of charity - instead of - in the way of negligence, especially regarding children. What would the news media be like “The Catholic Church foolishly renounced all the Vatican’s teachings on homosexuality for the safety and well-being of all children globally.” The real damage to the Church - were the decades of the bishops’ child sexual abuse cover-ups, orchestrated by members of the curia. Children were not protected. WE need not continue to follow this pattern of negligence in caring for children. Where we go once the Vatican’s teachings on homosexuality are renounced - I really do not know. I only know that our first, foremost - priority is to make sure that the lives of all children are safe. To find out what we do next - I would have followed a process that is exactly what Pope Francis has been doing. I would seek advice and input from everyone. Photo

The 80-year-old pontiff visited a pharmacy near the Holy See on Tuesday to pick up a pair of the orthopaedic shoes he wears to reduce the pain caused by chronic sciatica.
The visit was filmed and snapped on smartphones by a handful of customers who were in the shop at the time. Francis posed for pictures and blessed a crucifix belonging to one of the shop’s staff…

A frugal pope buys his own shoes - December 21, 2016
ROME -- As cardinal archbishop of Buenos Aires, he took the subway. Then as pope, he went out to buy his own eyeglasses. And now he picked up a pair of shoes.
Pope Francis caused a sensation after he left the Vatican late Tuesday (Dec. 20) and showed up in a pharmacy in the heart of Rome…
“A pope who goes to buy himself a pair of orthopedic shoes is like any citizen. A man among the people!” tweeted another fan.
Since his election in 2013 the former Jorge Bergoglio has made a point of leading a simple life, shunning the opulent papal apartments for a modest room in his residence, carrying his own briefcase and traveling in a simple Ford Fiesta.

Empathy is about standing in someone else's shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes. Not only is empathy hard to outsource and automate, but it makes the world a better place.
