New Hampshire residents want gay marriage to stay: survey - by Lauren Keiper -February 9, 2011 - Reuters

Results from a WMUR Granite State Poll showed 62 percent of survey respondents opposed repeal of the 2009 law that legalized same-sex marriage in New Hampshire.

The law took effect on Jan 1, 2010, making New Hampshire the fifth U.S. state, plus the District of Columbia, to allow same-sex marriages…

Conservative groups have since vowed to attempt to repeal the same-sex marriage law.

In the poll, however, more than half of the respondents, 51 percent, said they "strongly oppose" repeal, against 24 percent who strongly supported such a move…

Gov. Andrew Cuomo

Marriage Equality in New York –
February 10, 2011
The New York Times

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s pledge to make a strong push in the next few months to pass legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in New York State is a promising development. Speaking on Wednesday at Hofstra University, Governor Cuomo said he intends to ask the Legislature to take up the measure and that he will be “working very hard to pass it.”

Just 14 months ago, the State Senate voted, 38 to 24, to continue the state’s discrimination against gay and lesbian couples who want to get married. But strong leadership by the state’s popular new governor could alter the outcome this time…

The kids are all right
by Sadie F. Dingfelder,
Monitor APA, December 2005, Vol 36, No. 11

Research shows that families headed by gay and lesbian parents are as healthy as traditional families, but misperceptions linger.

Most of the parenting challenges Steven James, PhD, faces are pretty ordinary. For one, James's usually studious son Greg, 9, has recently been refusing to do his geography homework. "He's just not that interested in memorizing states and capitals," says James, who chairs the psychology and counseling program at Vermont's Goddard College…

Challenging assumptions
Unfortunately, many people are not aware of the three decades of research showing that children of gay or lesbian parents are just as mentally healthy as children with heterosexual parents, notes Cerbone. One such study, published in Child Development (Vol. 75, No. 6, pages 1,886-1,898) in 2004, compares a group of 44 teenagers with same-sex couples as parents with an equal number of teenagers with opposite-sex couples as parents. All participants were part of a national, randomly selected sample of teenagers from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health…

Zach Wahls
Gives Powerful Speech for Gay Marriage in Iowa,
February 2, 2011
View video

Excerpts from transcript:

Good  evening Mr. Chairman. My name is Zach Wahls. I'm a sixth-generation Iowan and an engineering student at the University of Iowa and I was raised by two women…

…Being a student at the University of Iowa, the topic of same sex marriage comes up quite frequently in classroom discussions... The question always comes down to, well, "Can gays even raise kids?"

...The conversation gets quiet for a moment because most people don't really have any answer. And then I raise my hand and say, "Actually, I was raised by a gay couple, and I'm doing pretty well."

I scored in the 99th percentile on the ACT. I'm actually an Eagle Scout. I own and operate my own small business. If I was your son, Mr. Chairman, I believe I'd make you very proud.

I'm not really so different from any of your children. My family really isn't so different from yours. After all, your family doesn't derive its sense of worth from being told by the state: "You're married. Congratulations."

No. The sense of family comes from the commitment we make to each other. To work through the hard times so we can enjoy the good ones. It comes from the love that binds us. That's what makes a family…

…You are voting for the first time in the history of our state to codify discrimination into our constitution, a constitution that but for the proposed amendment, is the least amended constitution in the United States of America.

You are telling Iowans that some among you are second-class citizens who do not have the right to marry the person you love…

…In the next two hours I'm sure we're going to hear plenty of testimony about how damaging having gay parents is on kids.

But in my 19 years, not once have I ever been confronted by an individual who realized independently that I was raised by a gay couple.

And you know why? Because the sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.

Thank you very much. Photos

Dozens of clergy speak out in support of gay marriage at Capitol
by Rose French,
February 10, 2011 - StarTribune.com

Close to 50 Twin Cities area clergy members participated in a rally alongside about 400 gay marriage supporters Thursday at the Capitol, where they rebuked efforts to push forth a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and woman.

Leaders from Jewish and various Christian faith backgrounds said state lawmakers should focus their attention on other issues, such as finding ways to create jobs, feeding the hungry and assisting people facing foreclosure.

The religious leaders also said it’s possible for religious believers to embrace gay rights.
“This isn’t about an agenda,” said the Rev. James Gertmenian, senior minister at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. “This isn’t about special rights. This is about fairness for everyone.”
