Hans Küng urges confrontation from the grassroots to unseat pope and force radical reform at Vatican
One of the world's most prominent Catholic theologians has called for a revolution from below to unseat the pope and force radical reform at the Vatican.
Hans Küng is appealing to priests and churchgoers to confront the Catholic hierarchy, which he says is corrupt, lacking credibility and apathetic to the real concerns of the church's members.
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Küng, who had close contact with the pope when the two worked together as young theologians, described the church as an "authoritarian system" with parallels to Germany's Nazi dictatorship.
"The unconditional obedience demanded of bishops who swear their allegiance to the pope when they make their holy oath is almost as extreme as that of the German generals who were forced to swear an oath of allegiance to Hitler," he said.
The Vatican made a point of crushing any form of clerical dissent, he added…
"The only way for reform is from the bottom up," said Küng, 84, who is a priest. "The priests and others in positions of responsibility need to stop being so subservient, to organise themselves and say that there are certain things that they simply will not put up with anymore."… Photo

On July 1, 1977, the Catholic Archbishop of Seattle, the Most Reverend Raymond G. Hunthausen, publicly defends the rights of gays and lesbians. The letter is reprinted in the Seattle Gay News. Photo
Archbishop Hunthausen had many disagreements with the Vatican over gay rights, women’s rights, and other social issues.

Chapter 6 - Narrative and Analysis of the Rome-Hunthausen Case: The Early Stage (1978-September 1986)
6.1.2 …the 9.30.85 Ratzinger Letter
…Ratzinger’s letter is a vision of the Church which he expresses explicitly and repeatedly…a demonstration of Ratzinger’s personal possession of expert power. According to this vision, there is a clear, consistent and true teaching of the Church which can be known and passed on (the authentic tradition is singular). The duty of the hierarchy in relationship to this teaching is to defend it and pass it on untainted with error. (Contrast this with Hunthausen’s emphasis on renewal, Vatican II and the “guidance of the Holy Spirit.”) This is where Hunthausen has fallen short. As Ratzinger sees it, confusion and a lack of clarity about where the Church stands have been allowed to settle into many aspects of archdiocesan pastoral practice…This, Ratzinger proposes, is the business at hand, the set of issues which Hunthausen is to address in his leadership of the archdiocese and in his exchanges with the Holy See (Rome controls the agenda).
Notably, an issue that Ratzinger does not mention is Hunthausen’s controversial stand on nuclear weapons…
Despite Ratzinger’s invocation of the Second Vatican Council, he acknowledges here no earthly forms of authority arising outside of the Church. On the contrary, extraecclesial sources of knowledge are depicted here as posing a threat to the proper catechesis and pastoral service of the faithful: “The Church should be understood as more than a merely social entity, governed chiefly by psychological, sociological and political processes,” Ratzinger writes. “An anthropology which is dominated by the tentative conclusions of the human sciences could well undermine many pastoral initiatives, however well intentioned.” Juxtaposed with the remarks about the limits of the “human sciences” is a catalogue of references to teachings of the magisterium, which offer the kind of sure teaching absent in the extraecclesial disciplines. Thus, if Hunthausen is unclear himself about the way forward, he is invited to have reference to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s 1976 Declaration on Sexual Ethics, the documents of the U.S. Bishops’ Conference, the revised Code of Canon Law, the Congregation’s 1975 Instruction, Inter Insigniores, etc. (These documents signal the Holy See’s possession of superior legal and expert power.) The technical nature of this presentation highlights the fact that this is a communication between one bishop and another. It also underscores Ratzinger’s view that this is an intraecclesial matter that Hunthausen is expected to address with intraecclesial resources...

Chapter Nine - Integrated Analysis Of Coping Strategies Applied In The Rome-Hunthausen Case
6. Employment of secrecy.
…Secrecy served to downplay the seriousness of the conflict, thereby preserving the appearance of unity within the hierarchy.
…Rome used secrecy against Hunthausen, repeatedly placing him at a disadvantage by not supplying information he requested (the Hickey visitation report being the most prominent example). Hunthausen fought this disadvantage during the middle stage of the conflict by repeatedly bringing conflict issues into the open and by making secrecy itself an issue (at the November 1986 NCCB meeting). By denying information to Hunthausen and excluding him from discussions that would affect his fate, the Vatican kept tight control over what the pertinent issues were and what the practical consequences should be. Through his resistance, Hunthausen introduced his own voice into the decision making process and also the voices of an interested public that was positioned to put social pressure on the negotiating bishops…

Benedict XVI - CHARACTER ASSASSINATION of Boffo – Vatileaks – May & June 2012
As I mentioned, in a previous post, President Obama’s letter to me was most timely because that very week I was facing the beginning of the Vatican’s Canon Law proceedings initiated by the bishop of my diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan – Walter Hurley – to remove me permanently from my clerical state. Again, restating - what is also quite interesting is the letter I received from President Obama expressing his- appreciation of my perspective gay (LGBT) rights - was addressed to me as “Fr. Marty Steven Kurylowicz.” The letter that I received from the bishop of Grand Rapids, Walter Hurley, was addressed to me as “Mr. Martin S. Kurylowicz.” I find this very interesting, though I am likely reading more into it than is there. Hurley states that his reason for beginning this Canonical process to remove me permanently from my clerical state is due to my refusal for the past 15 years to return to my diocese. This is not true. On the face of it this appears true, though purposely hidden behind the scenes nothing could be further from the truth. Years ago much of the public would just accept what Hurley or Benedict XVI had to say.

However, this is not so true today. For the past few years, people are not so quick to blindly believe whatever they say as true. People have been taking a second look at what they said about priests, sisters, monks and nuns, and thinking that there must be another side to the story of every person or institution they criticized publically. Since, Benedict XVI became pope - as it is said – his “chickens have been coming home to roost” in continuous droves. There is over 30 years of child sexual cover-ups cases and regardless of the endless number of news media spins the Vatican gives out or the number of PR personnel Benedict XVI hires or how often he gets angry – the chickens keep coming home. But the global child sexual abuse cover-ups scandals are not the only scandals Benedict XVI has – there are the Vatileaks with the Internal Corruption inside the Vatican & CHARACTER ASSASSINATION and the Vatican Bank Scandals with the same criticism constantly echoed about his 30 years of the Child Sexual Abuse Cover-ups - “LACK OF TRANSPARENCY.”

Benedict XVI - CHARACTER ASSASSINATION – Vatileaks - Vatican Bank Scandal - JP Morgan Closes VATICAN bank account “LACK OF TRANSPARENCY”
Now in 2012 there is exceeding ample precedence that is heavily documented in news media reports and in the civil courts that is over and far beyond any shadow of doubt clearly indicating that Benedict XVI (with his over 30 yrs. of child sexual cover-ups) including the bishop of Grand Rapids, Walter Hurley within the Metropolitan area of Detroit courts have a well established reputation for being deceptive and ruthless. So, much so that Benedict XVI in his feeble attempt muster up an air of righteous moral authority this past spring to crackdown on the USA nuns for being too overly concerned about issues of social justice that they have neglected to speak against gay marriage, the public took the side of the nuns. The hypocrisy of Benedict XVI’s criticism is so evident that the two of are nearly laugh entirely off the globe. Meaning that they lost so much credibility that what they have to say - falls on deaf ears or simply is laughable.
It appears the Catholic Church has things all turned around – 4/27/12
Really? [Catholic] Women religious in America will now have a bishop grading their morals?
Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Given the sex-abuse scandals – in which many Roman Catholic bishops looked the other way at best and moved child molesters from parish to parish, perpetrating evil, at worst – you would think that a ruler rap on the hierarchical knuckles would be in order.
“Sister” should have stepped in years ago. Instead, the Vatican has assigned a bishop to crack down on the nuns... http://www.thenewstribune.com/2012/04/27/2122898/it-appears-the-catholic-church.html

Without any Whistleblower Protection Laws for Gay Catholic Priests who “come out” for the protection of children – It was clearly unsafe for me to remain in my diocese.
The bishop of my diocese, Walter Hurley, has continually employed hostile and deceptive tactics against me from the beginning of his appointment to my home diocese in 2005 almost immediately after Benedict XVI became pope. Presently, today, he is continuing his same deceptive tactics though – though possibly this time - I may have an audience with more clout regarding law to watch and, at least to become aware of how he is initiating these canonical proceedings to remove my clerical status, which he began by sending letters to me to the wrong addresses. This is deliberate ruthless and deceitful discrimination antics used against someone who is gay. It is what Benedict XVI approves of – as justified discrimination against homosexuals that they do not deserve to be treated like other human beings. In 2010, Benedict XVI spoke against the UK passing antigay discrimination laws “In Speech, Benedict Raises Fears that Vatican Could Be Prosecuted for Stances against Gays.”
GAY MARRIAGE – “Doublespeak” Benedict XVI - IRRATIONAL Shift Blame Gays – Evading UN Accusations Global COVER-UPS Child Sexual Abuse “…a COMPLETE FAILURE to take responsibility” | PART 3
Benedict XVI and his accomplices like Hurley to use secrecy to keep their so called justified discrimination against gay priests or clergy, even members of the hierarchy who back in the early 1980’s as an issue of social justice were some of the first supporters of gay rights. They used secrecy in their strategies of discrimination against those they targeted, as a way to hold onto power in during their questionable attacks, as well as, desperately trying to keep everything private from the public and the news media. This appears to be Benedict XVI established MO, which was found researching through documentation revealing that it dates as far back as 30 years ago. In 1983, Benedict XVI then as Cardinal Ratzinger used the same identical strategies cloaked in the same impenetrable secrecy that creates for him the same familiar lack of transparency that he seems to feel safe in to work, which according to the evidence this is the way he ran the investigation on Archbishop Hunthausen of Seattle because of his public support of gays. I explained more about the research on Archbishop Hunthausen further below in this posting.

Reparative/Conversion Therapy and/or What Else???
The reason why I have not returned to my diocese of Grand Rapids is directly related to Vatican’s directives that I received 3 months after I came out in March 1997. I was told among other severe restrictions that I was to be sent away for a period of months to be reeducated on the topic of sexual orientation. This I believe was essentially reparative/conversion therapy, which was considered even in 1997 to be an unethical psychological treatment for a gay person. After I was surprisingly successful in coming out to my parish in Sparta, Michigan. There was no mass exodus for the prior 3 months, as has been reported in the Grand Rapids Press. Now 3 months later, I was to be subjected to threats of such cruel and inhuman treatment. I was in the state of shock and could not believe what was happening to me. I remembering thinking at the time – I wish someone could hear this insanity. I felt and in fact I was trapped – like a child who was going to be abused and no way to call for help. I remembering thinking to myself “No one is going to believe this absurdity.” Because, all this information was exchanged behind closed doors, in secrecy. I was completely ambivalent and rightly concerned and apprehensive as to what it all meant and what other future shocking twists and elimination of other aspects of common decencies would be done away with unexpectedly. I was 47 years old, a pastor of a parish for the past 12 years, during that time besides the regular heavy load of pastoral duties – I was responsible for the construction of new parish facilities from start to finish (funding raising, planning/design/layout of the new construction the building, execution and retirement of the debt) and I was successful...

First Lady Michelle Obama recently appeared on ‘Access Hollywood’ and reflected on the changes she’s noticed over the past four years. After highlighting the president’s historic support for marriage equality and the implementation of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal, the First Lady spoke about the positive message these advancements send to youth:
“I'm probably more hopeful than I've ever been because I can see the changes and I can see it in our kids,” she said. “I get to see so many great signs of this country's growth. Kids who now feel like, for the first time, if they're gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, that they feel like they have a place. … One kid came up to me yesterday on the photo line and he said, I would have committed suicide if it wasn't for what your husband did.” … Read more & view video

AUSCHWITZ -- CHRISTMAS 2008 -- A flashback far more severe than in --- BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN – December 26, 2008 – Fr. Marty Kurylowicz
Dear Fr. Geoff Farrow,
I have been so saddened by Pope Benedict XVI's cruel words to LGBTQ people around the world, to their parents, families and friends, most ESPECIALLY TO CHILDREN. After reading the accounts of this human travesty, I did not know where to find comfort or hope. And then I thought about your blog. And just like receiving a wonderful Christmas present, sure enough I found the hope and comfort I needed to hear. Photo
I am a priest and a clinical psychologist (MS). And for one of my research projects I chose to do a qualitative research project of the recorded verbal accounts of survivors of the Holocaust, 50 years after the event. It was a difficult research project, because I could not make sense of one of the accounts of the survivors.
For example, one survivor was describing what it was like riding the train to AUSCHWITZ, but he was describing how he was trying to make conversation with a girl on the train. I listened and wrote out this one account almost 30 times but I just was not getting it. I could not understand how this man could be talking about wanting to make conversation with this girl on the same train to AUSCHWITZ!?!
Because I had taught high school religion classes for nearly 20 years, it hit me hard, like a flash of lightning. Instantly, all the pieces came together, so fast. Though this survivor was in his late 60’s when he gave his account of his story on audiotape, he was remembering the events that took place, but naturally they were recounted through the mind of a teenager, the age he was on the train to AUSCHWITZ. That is why the dialogue wasn’t making any sense. I was thinking of him as an old man because the voice on the audiotape was the voice of a 68-year-old. As shocking as a bomb going off, all the different aspects of the psychological developmental stages of a teenager kicked in. I realized only too fully that he was just a young normal teenager on that train!!! And so was the girl he was trying to make conversation, and their moms and dads were there with them!!! There was no way to pretend I did not realize what I discovered. It kept hitting me: this is not some script from a movie or TV miniseries on the Holocaust. No; as much as I wished it were. The reality of this horror hit me all at once, on so many different levels of consciousness: what an unbelievable horror it was!!! How could we treat human beings like this! I remember when the realization of the magnitude of this horror first hit me, like an instant reflex. I threw down the transcript I was holding as if it were a blazing hot poker. It kept hitting me over and over again that this is not a movie script or some kind of play – this really happened! It really happened! Oh, my God, how could this have happened!?!!!
My supervisor told me at the time that I was traumatized by the oral content. Qualitative research is an attempt to understand the complexity of emotions, the kinds of emotions, and the degree of intensity involved. Our emotions are what allow us to connect with other human beings. We identify with the non-verbal quality of emotions more immediately and strongly than with the words used to express them. The non-verbal qualities include tone of voice, eye contact, facial expression, body posture, and gestures, all of which express emotions. Emotions are why we can connect with people through time, across cultures, and individually. It is the expression of human emotions in the arts that makes some works of art timeless, because they continually speak to all people through the ages.
And when I heard what Pope Benedict XVI said about homosexuals and transgendered human beings at Christmas 2008, I felt that same trauma all over again. Because in some way, somehow, he was conveying in a non-verbal manner the horror of the Holocaust, in what appears to be a traumatized, trance-like, accepted social norm from that period of time dictating that some people just don’t count, aren’t important, and can be easily disposed of. And if you rock the boat, you could be next to be disposed of.
I truly have to believe that a person in his position would not be doing this consciously or intentionally. The horror of the Holocaust is like an atomic bomb with fallout so extensive that it spreads over a radius of more than 150 miles. The horror of the Holocaust began in 1933 and ended in 1945. The psychological fallout would have been far more extensive and more deadly, especially when it is not identified as such. Photo
It hit me the way it did when I realized that the research I was doing about a Holocaust survivor, a man 68 years old telling his story, who was remembering what it was like to be on the train to AUSCHWITZ, from the perspective of a young teenage boy who just wanted to talk to a girl. It seemed like the same kind of horror, a tacit assumption that some people don't count and can be disposed of without remorse. Could it be that Benedict XVI is unconsciously repeating Hitler's crime against humanity by taking on a long-accepted social attitude from that period of time?
The question I asked myself was: what would it have been like for someone growing up gay during the Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933 -1945?
What would be the severity of the psychological effects on a boy who grew up to be gay in Germany during the time of Hitler’s NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS 1933 -1945? During the Nazi regime, homosexuals were publicly defamed and falsely accused for the major social problems of that time, which was done to incite massive public hatred and hostility directed against homosexuals. Homosexuals were used for medical experiments, physically mutilated, brutally tortured and exterminated.
Would this child, as an adult, in a severe dissociated state of mind from his own homosexual feelings (Harry Stack Sullivan MD, Dissociative Processes, Clinical Studies on Psychiatry (1956)), unconsciously perpetuate the terrifying horror of the insensitivity he had experienced growing up? If he found himself in a position of authority would he recreate the same social and political environment of violence and terror for homosexuals that he experienced, as a child who grew up to be gay, during the NAZI PERSECUTION OF HOMOSEXUALS?
I think in truth on a much deeper level I was frightened, really frightened, to hear Pope Benedict XVI’s Christmas remarks against homosexuals and transgendered human beings and even more frightened by the silence from the larger global community of human beings. What is so frightening is, even if there is agreement that one person does not matter or is not important, in truth then no one matters. Therefore, when I thought about your blog and what you did on October 5, 2008, I felt more reassured, I felt hope, and I felt comforted. NOW, isn’t that the true meaning of Christmas?
God Bless you,
Fr. Marty Kurylowicz
