He spoke after months of withering criticism of his near-silence on the issue and after complaints about the many sharp-edged denunciations by his top aides. Some of them blamed the media for the crisis, with one dismissing news reports about the abuse as "petty gossip," and others arguing that the abuse was the fault of gays in the priesthood, or was due to a loss of faith among modern believers. Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday said the clergy sexual abuse crisis rocking Catholicism stems from "the sin that exists inside the church" -- his most direct statements on the scandal since new revelations of abuse cases surfaced in recent months, raising questions about his own role in the crisis.

The pontiff's comments, in remarks to reporters on the papal plane bound for Portugal where Benedict is to spend four days, also appear to reflect a significant change of course by the Vatican. Read more - by David Gibson – Politics Daily
