“What the Pope Knew” - Gary Tuchman, September 25, 2010, CNN & CNN International (Investigative documentary)

CNN: SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT
What the Pope Knew
Aired September 25, 2010 - 20:00 ET

TEXT: The following contains graphic language. Viewer discretion is advised.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN HOST (voice-over): 2008. A trip that made history. The new pope's first visit to the United States. His first chance to directly address American Catholics about the sex abuse scandal enveloping their church.

POPE BENDICT XVI: No words of mine could describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse.

TUCHMAN (voice-over): For the first time ever, a pope met directly with victims of abuse.

JOHN ALLEN, CNN SENIOR VATICAN ANALYST: He became the first pope to apologize for the sex abuse crisis in his own voice. He became the first pope to issue an entire document devoted to the sex abuse crisis. And on and on.

TUCHMAN (voice-over): But behind the public apologies and historic meetings is a darker, more complicated story.

TEXT: What the Pope Knew.

ALLEN: I think the frustratingly complex answer is that Pope Benedict XVI is both part of the problem and part of the solution on the sex abuse issue.

DAVID GIBSON, POLITICSDAILY.COM: Joseph Ratzinger was not and is not the villain of the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church in no way, shape, or form. And yet, he's not the hero, either. He was part of a culture.

THUCHMAN (voice-over): David Gibson is a religion reporter and biographer of the Pope.

GIBSON: The power, the authority, under church's -- the church's canon law was always in his hands to do something. But he always took the slower route, he always took the stalling tactic. That's something I think people still want him to answer for. Why? Why didn't he do more?

TUCHMAN (on camera): For decades, before he became pope, Joseph Ratzinger was a high-ranking Vatican official who, more than anyone beside Pope John Paul, could have taken decisive action to stem the sexual abuse crisis. But critics say and documents show that Pope Benedict's history of dealing with sexual abuse was very troubling. Part of a culture of foot-dragging and, perhaps, obstruction...

Gay marriage -> Restoring "Hope of Love" To Children In Early Childhood -> Marriage Equality – March 23, 2010 – Fr. Marty Kurylowicz
Marriage Equality, like Galileo, is the truth about the facts of growing up gay. Marriage Equality will not become a reality until people learn that its most vital purpose is that it restores the “hope of love” to children in early childhood – essential to their development and well-being for life. Without Marriage Equality we teach children how to hate love and how to be mean and indifferent to people as adults. With all due respect, without Marriage Equality we would teach them in much the same way as has been shown by Benedict XVI and the hierarchy, especially in their lack of care and protection of children for decades.

Perpetuation of Generational Violence On Children -- Who Grow Up to Be Gay
The research of Dr. Sidney H. Phillips is significant in understanding the kind of harm caused to very young children who grow up to be gay and the effects its has for these children in their adult lives. His works, as well as, Dr. Jack Drescher, Dr. Richard Isay and others bring to light the many problems and complications that children who grows up to be gay will encounter in their adult lives, when these children are raised in a social environment that has been influenced by harsh antigay social and religious norms. Whereas, children who grow up to be gay, but are not raised under the influence of harsh antigay social and religious norms, do not experience the complications in adult life, as those who do…
Selma Fraiberg, (1987) Ghosts in the Nursery, her research helps us to understand how our past mistreatment by adults in our lives growing up as children, can be unconsciously repeated in our treatment of children, when we are adults…
Selma Fraiberg, (1987) Ghosts in the Nursery, explains how parents' own past experiences of growing up, impacts their relationship with their own child, beginning as infants. Fraiberg’s research studied the interactions between an infant and one of the parents, when both were left alone in a room. She observed what happens when an infant begins to cry and continues crying for an extended amount of time. Fraiberg discovered that some parents appeared undisturbed by their infant's distress and made no gesture, to soothe, calm or even to pick up their infant.
What prevented these parents from attending to their crying infants? Fraiberg’s research revealed that unconscious processes, conflicts (the Ghosts) of the parents' own past were being played out, in the same way, as these parents experienced being cared for by adults during their early childhood years growing up. The reason why some parents did not pick up their crying infants was because in the past when they were growing up, no one heard their cries or picked them up to soothe them. Not having experienced the attentiveness of a caring comforting adult when they were in distress, as children, as parents, they have no conception of the need to comfort their own crying infants.
Fraiberg’s aim was to intervene at this point, in her parent/infant psychotherapy, to uncover these unconscious processes of the parents that were being played out in caring for their infants and then to them help to construct a more meaningful life-giving interactions between the parents and their infants. (Fraiberg, Selma; Adelson, Edna; Shapirio, Vivian; (1987) Ghosts in the Nursery: a Psychoanalytic Approach to the Problems of Impaired Infant-mother Relationships. Dissociative Processes  - by Harry Stack Sullivan
Have you ever wonder why some very prominent male public figures, who have been known for making harsh condemning public statements against homosexuality, only to find out later in the news media that these same men were caught engaging in “public restroom” sex or were paying to have sex with men. Harry Stack Sullivan, M.D. in his description of Dissociative Processes in his book Clinical Studies on Psychiatry gives some insight, as to how this phenomenon can happen not only to public figures but also to anyone… Read morehttp://fathermartykurylowicz.blogspot.com/2008/12/perpetuation-of-generational-violence.html

SEXUAL CONVERSION THERAPIES
Jack Drescher, M.D.

Hating Gays: An Overview of Scientific Studies – by Gregory M. Herek - Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)
…It frequently is assumed that feelings of personal threat result in strong negative attitudes toward homosexuality, whereas lack of threat leads to neutral or positive attitudes. This perspective often is associated with the term homophobia, and it derives from a psychodynamic view that prejudiced attitudes serve to reduce tension aroused by unconscious conflicts.
Attitudes are likely to serve a defensive function when an individual perceives some analogy between homosexual persons and her or his own unconscious conflicts. Subsequently, that person responds to gay men and lesbians as a way of externalizing inner conflicts and thereby reducing the anxiety associated with them. The conflicts specific to antihomosexual prejudice presumably involve a person's gender identity, sexual object choice, or both. For example, unconscious conflicts about one's own sexuality or gender identity might be attributed to lesbians and gay men through a process of projection. Such a strategy permits people to externalize the conflicts and to reject their own unacceptable urges by rejecting lesbians and gay men (who symbolize those urges) without consciously recognizing the urges as their own. Since contact with homosexual persons threatens to make conscious those thoughts that have been repressed, it inevitably arouses anxiety in defensive individuals. Consequently, defensive attitudes are likely to be negative… Photo - International Day Against Homophobia
…Many particular empirical findings I have mentioned make sense if we assume that negative attitudes often are based in part on a defensive function: the finding that people are more negative toward homosexuals of their own sex than toward those of the opposite sex (since same-sex homosexuals presumably are more threatening); the positive correlations between hostile attitudes toward homosexuality and variables such as authoritarianism' cognitive rigidity' intolerance of ambiguity, and dogmatism (all of these personality traits presumably indicate higher levels of defensiveness); and the positive correlations between hostility and sex-guilt sexual conservatism, and nonpermissiveness (all of which might indicate conflicts about sexuality). . . .

Homophobia Is Killing Our Youth – by Jason Mannino – April 17, 2009 – Huffington Post

Today is a significant day for silence, youth, and our schools. Today, across the country schools will participate in a National Day of Silence to protest the homophobic bullying that is killing teenagers and honor those whose lives have been taken by the barbaric hands of hatred.

In less than two years there have been four brutal teenage deaths resulting from homophobic bullying. Just last week Carl Walker, an eleven year old in Springfield, Massachusetts , who never actually identified as gay, hung himself with an extension cord from the 3rd floor landing of his home. This was after his mother repeatedly implored his school to do something about the homophobic bullying he experienced. Last summer a transgendered teenager, Angie Zapata, was brutally murdered in Greeley, Colorado. Last February Eric Mohat, a 17-year old student from Ohio, who also never identified as gay, committed suicide after being repeatedly harassed with anti-gay epithets such as "fag" and "homo." His school went to trial last month as a lawsuit was filed by his parents, not because they want the school's money, but because they want to know why the school didn't respond to several requests for action. Also, last year, Lawrence King, a fifteen year old who identified as gay, was shot in the head twice in his English class. He died a few days later. His heart was donated the day after Valentine's day.

Is It Possible to Be Against Same-Sex Marriage Without Being Homophobic? Carlos A. Ball - Professor of Law at Rutgers University, August 24, 2010 – Huffington Post
A CNN poll released earlier this month has received considerable attention because it is the first national survey showing that a majority of Americans believe that same-sex couples should have the right to marry, a rate of support for gay marriage that is double what it was in 1996. The poll was released a few days after federal Judge Vaughn Walker, in striking down California's Proposition 8, concluded that defenders of that law had failed to introduce any evidence in court that same-sex marriages harm either society or individuals.
Now that opponents of same-sex marriage appear to be in the minority and that their allegations about the purported negative consequences of same-sex marriages have been discredited in federal court, it is fair to ask whether it is possible to oppose marriage equality without at some level, whether consciously or unconsciously, being prejudiced against gay people.
My view is that fifteen or twenty years ago it was indeed possible to oppose gay marriages without being homophobic. Back then, the idea that marriage could be anything other than a union between a woman and a man had simply not crossed the minds of most Americans. Indeed, as I tell in my book "From The Closet to the Courtroom," when the plaintiffs in the Hawaii same-sex marriage case in 1991 first asked the Honolulu civil rights lawyer who eventually represented them to take their case, the attorney had never before considered the possibility that two people of the same gender could ever be married.
What has happened during the last two decades is that the marriage equality movement has patiently and methodically questioned every plausible objection raised by conservative opponents...
Without factual support for their arguments, it is becoming less and less tenable for opponents of same-sex marriage to argue that their positions are not influenced by a dislike of gay people and their intimate relationships…
…It is impossible for anyone to know for sure why others take the positions that they do on controversial social issues. In fact, because prejudice and discrimination can have deeply psychological explanations, we often may not even know why we (much less others) hold certain positions on matters of race, gender, and sexual orientation. Nonetheless, after marriage equality opponents have failed for twenty years to articulate rational arguments for their opposition to gay marriages, it is becoming less plausible to contend that such an opposition is not, at some level, grounded in homophobia.

Perpetuating Generation After Generation of Hate - Why???
If children, at the young ages of 4 and 5 years old are abused because these children have a homosexual orientation these children are being taught how not to love. These children as they show their natural fondness for persons of the same sex, will soon learn that it is not acceptable to the adults in their lives. This negative reaction by the major adult figures in their lives creates for these children major emotional confusion that can be traumatizing. These children out of fear of abandonment are being taught to go against their innate nature to love. They are being taught, as very young children that love “true love” does not exist for them.
Avoid Human Beings You Truly Love???
These children will painfully learn that it is acceptable by the adults in their lives to avoid the human beings that these children by the nature of their sexual orientation feel attracted to, want to be close to and in essence to be one with. This, however, is on a child’s level of psychological development, which is not the same as an adult. In ways that are likely more implicit it will be impressed on these children as young as 4 and 5 years of age that in some way their natural innocent child expressions of love for another human being of the same sex is somehow intrinsically evil and disordered and at times some of these children will be severely published for wanting to love and to be loved.
Taught to be Cold and Uncaring Towards Other Human Beings
Therefore, in fact, these children are being taught how to be cold and uncaring towards other human beings, to ignore any of their personal feelings of love and tenderness for others. The child is being taught to treat as evil and despicable any personal feelings of love for another and other human beings. Those basic natural human impulses of compassion and love for other human beings have been anesthetized for these children by the influence of the unsubstantiated antigay teachings of the Vatican in their early childhood psychological developmental years.
Major Emotional Confusion - Disruptive Throughout Children's Lives
What kind of people are we raising these children to be in the world? This kind of treatment causes not only major emotional confusion for children at a very young age, but it tends to remain disruptive for them throughout their adult lives on various levels of establishing relationships with others, with careers, etc. Are we teaching these children how to be insensitive to the cares and needs of others, including children? With all due respect is this the attitude that we have witnessed from Benedict XVI, the Vatican and the hierarchy concerning their negligence in the child sexual abuse cases that were cover-up and allowed to continue for decades, as well as, their continuation of promulgating their unsubstantiated antigay teachings. This same attitute can be found in the ads and the messages of the spokepeople against Marriage Equality. It is a meanness without end directed against fellow human beings not based on any concrete facts, likely for some coming from dissociated memories of fears from childhood.
These children with a homosexual orientation are not intending to commit some blatantly evil, or socially unacceptable act. Children at this age and younger, only want to love and be loved and not to harm anyone. Children at this age do not have the capacity for evil intent as adults have. However, these children who are raised in social environments influenced by antigay (unsubstantiated) social and or religious norms are being inhumanly taught to go against their very nature, their innate capacity to love and be loved by another. It is unconscionable that as a society and as practicing Catholic Christians that Benedict XVI, the hierarchy, and their individual respective staff members mandate this inhuman treatment of children as young as 4 and 5 years of age to continue indefinitely and no one cares to stop it.
Foot Binding - Collectively So Barbaric
It astounding that there is not some major immediate effort within the Catholic Church to stop this kind of abuse to children. It is equally surprising that there is not some huge public outcry to stop this inhuman treatment of children that happens all around the world. When did we become collectively so barbaric to allow such inhuman treatment of children to continue generation after generation? However, the magnitude of this inhuman treatment of children is socially acceptable, and is treated as something akin to foot binding. In essence, these children are being taught not to trust their natural feelings of love for another person that they are attracted to, because the person is of the same sex. These same children do not have the same natural feelings of attraction for persons of the opposite sex, so in essence these children are being taught to live a life in isolation and not to be emotionally attached to anyone, to never be in love with another human being. Is this a visual picture of what happened to Benedict XVI and all his hierarchy? Are their lives a product of the same kind of inhuman treatment that they grew up in as children themselves and that they are now inflicting onto millions of other children? Like these children, Benedict XVI and the hierarchy are never to love another human being, in the same way that heterosexual people are allowed to love another human being. Are they in fact perpetuating this continuous crime of inhumanity against children, as it was inflicted on to them as children? In any case it must not be allowed to continue.

"Impending rules on gay priests create Catholic divide"by Charles Honey – October 8, 2005 -The Grand Rapids Press
When the Rev. Martin Kurylowicz came out to his Sparta parish eight years ago, he said he had struggled for years with his homosexuality.
The Catholic priest says the struggle would be made harder for many others if the Vatican issues new rules that reportedly would ban gays from becoming priests…
…"I sizzled when I read it," said Kurylowicz, 55. "It's very hurtful, is what it is. In this day and age, there's no reason for it. It sends a message that there's something wrong with gays."
Kurylowicz said he spoke out then to raise awareness of violence against gays and teach others homosexuality is not a choice but an inborn trait. Church leaders still don't understand that and contribute to gays' poor self-esteem, he said…
…"Kids as young as 4 or 5 know they're different," said Kurylowicz, a psychotherapist… "They grow up with this pervasive guilt, which sabotages their growth and motivation." The result is thousands of dollars in therapy to accept their natural orientation, he said, adding,"Does the Vatican want to take that on, like the tobacco industry had to take on for the damage it caused consumers? "…

Overturning Catholic Moral Teaching on Homosexuality: Are Salzman And Lawler Right? By Phyllis Zagano,
9/29/10 – The Huffington Post
Excerpts:
…So the question is: what's "natural" or "unnatural?" That, in turns, leads to a more overarching question: Is homosexuality a status or a choice?
Some thinkers, including several members of the Supreme Court, seem to reason that homosexuality is an inborn status.
Catholicism--and, indeed most religions--teach that while homosexuality exists, homosexual activity is a "disordered" choice against the laws of nature.
If homosexuality is indeed a status rooted in biology or genetics, then homosexuals, like left-handed people, act according to their nature. But if homosexuality is a choice rooted in behavior, then homosexuals act against nature…
In terms of civil rights, individuals deserve and are afforded protections for both status (say, skin color) and choice (for example, religious affiliation).
In terms of morality, status is neutral, while choice has implications and consequences.
Catholicism argues that homosexuals deserve legal protections, but not because homosexuality is a status. Catholicism says homosexual activity is a choice. So while bishops support non-discrimination policies, they won't agree that homosexuals are protected because of their genetic makeup.
Catholic thinkers have grappled with this question for ages. Creighton University professors Todd A. Salzman and Michael G. Lawler are the latest voices on the Catholic circuit, Their 2008 book, "The Sexual Person,"…
Salzman and Lawler's dense academic argument turns traditional Catholic teaching on natural law on its head…
Salzman and Lawler argue that what is "natural" for a heterosexual is not "natural" for a homosexual, and therefore homosexuals and heterosexuals must act in accord with their personal "natures".
