Benedict waits 10 months take swing back at Tony Blair - Vatican rethink “entrenched” attitudes about homosexuality out of step ordinary Catholics

Vatican out of step on gay rights, says Tony Blair - guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 8 April 2009

Tony Blair said the Vatican should rethink "entrenched" attitudes towards homosexuality, claiming its views on gay rights were out of step with those of ordinary Roman Catholics.

In an interview with the gay magazine Attitude, the former prime minister disagreed with the pope's stance and argued that most Catholic congregations would have a more tolerant approach to homosexuality.

His comments, published today to mark the magazine's 15th anniversary, are a challenge to the Vatican, which remains opposed to gay marriage and decrees that homosexual acts are sinful.

Last year, Pope Benedict XVI sparked fury in the gay community when he suggested that homosexuality was as big a threat to humankind as the destruction of the rainforests. Read complete article - guardian.co.uk

Pope condemns gay equality laws ahead of first UK visit - Riazat Butt - guardian.co.uk, Monday 1 February 2010

Pope Benedict XVI has condemned British equality legislation for running contrary to "natural law" as he confirmed his first visit to the UK later this year.

In a letter addressed to the Catholic bishops of England and Wales, the pope praised Britain's "firm commitment to equality of opportunity for all".

However, he criticised UK legislation for creating "limitations on the freedom of religious communities to act in accordance with their beliefs". It is thought his comments relate to laws that came in last year preventing adoption agencies from discriminating against gay couples and also Harriet Harman's equality bill, currently going through parliament.
