VADODARA: An old-age shelter for homosexual men might be built in Australia by gay prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, whose project of building such a shelter in Rajpipla has grabbed attention of Australian social activists and NGOs.
Gohil, who is joining hands with several agencies and ministers to work towards increasing HIV prevention in India and the Asia-Pacific region, has signed a pact with ACON, which works for prevention of HIV/AIDS in Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual Transgender (LGBT) communities in Australia.
The first of its kind international collaboration between Australia and India to work for this cause was signed by Gohil's NGO Lakshya Trust recently.
In fact, Gohil's visit to Australia recently was coordinated by ACON with assistance from Burnet Institute and funded by the Australia-India Council which is part of the Commonwealth Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Lakshya will also work with University of Sydney for clinical and social research in area of AIDS/HIV.
"This is the first time India and Australia will work together through international links and collaborations. Through this tie-up we are looking to learn, adopt and develop joint proposals for knowledge management and transfer. This will also help in mainstreaming issues faced by LGBT communities," said project director and co-founder of Lakshya Trust Sylvester Merchant.
