Police vow to protect Budapest Pride marchers - By: MTI – caboodle.hu – The Hungarian Portal

Potential counter-demonstrators to this year's Gay Dignity March in Budapest will be kept at a safe distance from the marchers, Sandor Steigler, head of the organising Rainbow Mission told reporters on Monday.

The police are planning to close off all side streets and even parallel ones to Andrassy Boulevard, the main route for the parade, where participants met pelting eggs, stones and even petrol bombs from violent anti-gay groups last year, Steigler said.

Organisers have held several meetings with police representatives, Steigler said, adding that their commitment to the personal safety of marchers was "reassuring".

The police have also promised protection to all other venues of the 14th Budapest Pride -- a cultural and film festival focusing on lesbian, gay, bi- and transsexual themes -- lasting a full week before and after the parade set for September 5. Photo
