Just days after U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker struck down California’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, APA President Carol D. Goodheart, EdD, opened a series of APA Annual Convention sessions highlighting what psychological science can add to the public debate over same-sex marriage.
“The fact that we’re meeting in this state has given us an unmatched opportunity to focus public attention on the scientific research into the benefits to mental health of marriage, and conversely, on the pernicious health effects of discrimination and stigma,” Goodheart said.
California continues to be a key battleground state for same-sex marriage. Although the State Assembly approved legislation allowing same-sex marriage in 2005 and 2007, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) vetoed both measures, and the question moved to the courts.
After the California Supreme Court ruled in May 2008 that denying same-sex couples marriage rights was unconstitutional, more than 18,000 same-sex couples got married in the next six months. In November 2008, California voters approved Proposition 8, the state constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage. Walker ruled that the amendment was unconstitutional Aug. 4.
Annual Convention speaker Gregory M. Herek, PhD, of the University of California, Davis, who had spent a day on the stand as an expert witness for plaintiffs seeking to overturn the California amendment, talked about the questions he’s most often asked when courts examine same-sex marriage laws.
He’s usually asked if there is such a thing as sexual orientation, and how to define it. Herek testifies that attraction to the same sex is a normal expression of human sexuality, and that most people are consistent in their sexual orientation and report that they did not experience their orientation as a choice. Interventions to change sexual orientation are unlikely to reduce same-sex attraction, and often cause considerable psychological distress when they fail, he said.
In previous testimony, he’s made the point that legally married couples get access to special rights and privileges, enjoy greater relationship stability and receive social support and recognition, and that restricting marriage to opposite-sex couples is an expression of stigma.
“Denying gays and lesbians access to the institution deprives them of those benefits,” he said.

Cindy McCain Blames Gay Teen Suicides and Bullying on DADT, Her Husband
By: Nitasha Tiku,
November 12, 2010 - New York Magazine
It's going to be a tense Thanksgiving at the McCain manse. Please pass the thinly veiled contempt? The NOH8 Campaign, a photo project that collected images of people with duct tape over their mouths to protest Prop 8, released a video yesterday about bullying and suicides among gay youth. The video features celebrities like Denise Richards, Gene Simmons, Dave Navarro — and Cindy McCain, whose husband led the GOP filibuster that prevented Congress from voting on a Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal and whose presidential campaign ran on a platform that opposed gay marriage. After sharing statistics like the fact that a gay teen commits suicide in America every seventeen minutes, the video says, "You might be asking yourself, how can these statistics be so high? What's convincing these kids that things won't get better?"
At which point, we see Cindy McCain for the first time, saying, "Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future ... They can't serve our country openly ... Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens, why shouldn't [the bullies]?"

When an anti-gay activist is caught with a male escort ...
Amid all the gasps of disbelief that one can hear over George Alan Rekers—Baptist minister, co-founder of the conservative Family Research Council, and vociferous advocate of ex-gay therapy—getting caught with a male escort after a holiday together in Europe, there are conflicting reports on whether the escort was there to help lift Mr. Rekers' luggage or to receive "the Gospel of Jesus," as the psychiatrist insisted recently.
With Rekers acknowledging that he found his bellhop from the male escort website Rentboy.com, and the escort now acknowledging that he was hired to give erotic massages, it's worth considering not only the astonishing disconnect between Rekers' private and professional lives, but also the incalculable damage his words about homosexuality have had on teens and young adults across the nation and beyond.
Until he was recently scrubbed from the organization's Website, Rekers sat on the board of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), an organization dedicated to changing the sexuality of gay people. "Mr. Rekers," the BBC reminds us, also "has testified as an expert in favor of a gay adoption ban in Florida," for which he was paid $87,000 and during which he called gay men mentally unstable and a "deviant segment of society." His published works include Growing up Straight: What Families Should Know about Homosexuality.

POWER OF SOCIAL NORMS
Sexual orientation is not the only continuum that makes up the complexity of human sexuality, there are others. However, allowing the powerful effects of social norms that are ignorant about human sexuality to continue out of fear only perpetuates the harm to generation after generation. The powerful strength of social norms to influence a person or a whole group of people should not be underestimated, as demonstrated by this video clip from Allen Funt's "Candid Camera." Social norms can be so powerful that they can get entire groups of people to agree to go against truth and logic. This video clip is quite humorous. But it is not humorous the kind of serious harm caused to very young children and the life threatening situations even death to many others that is promulgated and perpetuated through the ignorance and fear of social norms not based on truth and facts regarding complexity of human sexuality. Gay marriage -> Restoring "Hope of Love"
To Children In Early Childhood -> Marriage Equality
March 23, 2010 – by Fr. Marty Kurylowicz
Marriage Equality, like Galileo, is the truth about the facts of growing up gay. Marriage Equality will not become a reality until people learn that its most vital purpose is that it restores the “hope of love” to children in early childhood – essential to their development and well-being for life. Without Marriage Equality we teach children how to hate love and how to be mean and indifferent to people as adults. With all due respect, without Marriage Equality we would teach them in much the same way as has been shown by Benedict XVI and the hierarchy, especially in their lack of care and protection of children for decades.
